Blade Runner: Origins: Comic Overview
Blade Runner: Origins is a twelve-issue Titan Comics series written by K. Perkins, Mellow Brown, and Mike Johnson and drawn by Fernando Dagnino, published from March 2021 to June 2022 with Alcon Publishing. Set in Los Angeles in 2009, ten years before Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, it follows LAPD detective Cal Moreaux as he investigates the apparent suicide of Tyrell bioengineer Lydia Kine and uncovers the escaped Nexus-5 prototype that forces the city to create its first blade runner unit.
The Story
The Siege Of Kalanthia
During the siege of Kalanthia, soldiers Cal Moreaux and Avery held a hexagonal hangar corridor while green-armored troops traded fire across crates and fallen bodies. The Tyrell Corporation had left their unit a sealed box marked for use if all else failed, and Avery stayed with it while Cal cleared the south hall. The base even kept tanks of facehugger specimens under study, the kind of cargo that made Tyrell's sealed gift look less like mercy. Cal asked Avery to thank Tyrell for the gift, then pushed ahead into smoke and muzzle flash.
When Cal turned back into the room he found every other soldier dead among the wreckage, cut down in the minutes he had spent clearing the south hall. Only a pair of strangers remained standing among the bodies, and one of them told Cal he was welcome as if the slaughter had been a gift. Those survivors would later prove to be early replicants delivered as a last-resort weapon from Tyrell's sealed box, and the memory stayed with Cal long after he left the war for Los Angeles.
Nia In The Hospital
In 2009, Cal sat at the bedside of his sister Nia Moreaux in a Los Angeles hospital while blinds cut hard light across the room. She was alive but unresponsive under a brown blanket, and he visited between shifts at the LAPD, where he worked cold cases. Friends still hoped she would come around, and the empty chair beside her became a routine he kept even when the city offered him nothing new to solve.
At the precinct he was handed a case that looked simple on paper: Tyrell bioengineer Lydia Kine had been found hanged in her laboratory, and the company had already labeled the death a suicide. Sergeant Peter Gutman wanted it written up quietly, the kind of favor Tyrell expected from the LAPD. Cal took the file and went to the tower that ordinary police were rarely allowed to enter. He did not yet know how tightly Tyrell already controlled the edges of the investigation, or that Lydia's junior assistant was still waiting beside the body.
The Death At Tyrell
Inside Tyrell headquarters, Cal was the first non-employee the guards had admitted to the lab floor after Lydia's body was found. Junior bioengineer Effie Koropey had discovered the hanging and stayed with the corpse through the morning rather than leave her alone. She tried to answer Cal's questions about who else had night access to the room and what Lydia had been building before company handlers cut her off. The hexagonal lab still held Lydia above the worktables while Effie waited for someone outside Tyrell to take the death seriously.
Ilora Stahl interrupted them as the voice hand-picked by Eldon Tyrell to speak for the firm. Stahl told Cal that anything useful had already been sent to the LAPD, and she suggested that a detective of his skill would be better employed by Tyrell than by the city. She framed Lydia's death as closed paperwork rather than a crime scene, and she kept Effie from finishing her account. The lab's hexagonal windows looked out on an artificial forest while Lydia's body still hung above the tables.
La Plume Sauvage
Cal went to La Plume Sauvage, the bird-themed club run by his friend Divina, and told her about Stahl's offer while he sat alone at a glowing pink bar. A redhead asked him for a light, bird-masked waitresses carried trays through the fog, and winged performers worked the stage behind a neon sign that named the club. Divina warned him to stay clear of Tyrell for Nia's sake, because the company already owned too much of the city's future.
The talk left him uneasy, but he still returned to his apartment determined to dig into the Tyrell case rather than take Stahl's offer or walk away from Lydia's death. Divina's warning about the company sat with him on the walk home, and he kept turning over how quickly Tyrell had tried to hire the detective assigned to its own crime scene. He did not yet know that Lydia's brother, Marcus Kine, was waiting for him in the street outside with proof she had been murdered. The club would later become a shelter for people Stahl's militia forced out of the slums, with Divina and Asa hiding awakened replicants under its neon.
Marcus Under Attack
Marcus Kine insisted that his sister had not killed herself and that Tyrell was covering the truth as they spoke outside Cal's building in the rain. A heavy rectangular object blasted toward them while a cloaked figure shouted for Marcus to get clear, and the explosion threw both men off their feet. Cal shoved Marcus clear of the wreckage and treated the attack as proof the company was already cleaning witnesses.
Marcus came up with a futuristic handgun and a gritted expression while the tan-jacketed man lay dazed behind him in the rain. A call from Effie then changed the case: on the night Lydia died, a Nexus-5 prototype had escaped the lab, and she had seen enough to know the hanging was not a closed suicide. Cal kept Marcus close, treated the attack outside as Tyrell cleanup, and began hunting the escaped unit as the real thread through Lydia's death.
The Morgue
At the morgue, Cal examined Lydia's body while Sergeant Peter Gutman pushed for a quick close that would keep Tyrell quiet. The broken vertebrae did not match a simple hanging, and Cal said so out loud over Gutman's objections while the slab lights left nowhere to hide the damage. He refused to sign off on an open-and-shut suicide while the injuries still pointed the other way, and he kept the file open against pressure from both the desk and the company.
When he left the slab he found that Tyrell personnel had already taken Marcus from the station without a clear paper trail. Nobody at the desk would say who had authorized the pickup or where the spinner was headed, only that the company had claimed its witness. The company was cleaning the edges of the case faster than the police could work, and Cal left the precinct knowing Stahl was already ahead of him.
The Spinner Attack
The spinner carrying Stahl and Marcus was hit hard enough to tear it out of the air and leave wreckage in the street. The attacker walked away from the crash without injury and pulled Marcus free before Tyrell security could regroup around the burning debris. Cal arrived too late to stop the extraction, but the wreck told him the case had moved past ordinary murder into something that could shrug off a spinner crash.
Cal, meanwhile, met Effie at Nemo's Diner in the slums and heard how Tyrell had kept demanding upgrades past the Nexus-4. She described a hunger for optimization that treated people as prototypes, and she named the escaped unit as the key to Lydia's death rather than the hanging alone. The diner talk tied the hanging, the kidnapping, and the missing replicant into one chase, and Cal left with a clearer map of what Stahl was trying to bury.
Asa And Marcus
Marcus's rescuer revealed himself as Asa, a replicant carrying Lydia Kine's transferred consciousness in a new body. Asa tried to prove the claim with childhood memories only Lydia should have known, and he asked Marcus to trust him long enough to stay alive outside Tyrell's reach. Marcus listened, but he still saw a machine wearing his sister's mind rather than Lydia herself, and every shared detail made the gap harder to close.
At a street stand a replicant cook fought back against an abusive owner, and Marcus recoiled from the violence and from Asa's calm acceptance of it. He treated Asa as a simulation of Lydia rather than as Lydia herself and tried to put distance between them before the stand became another crime scene. The rescue had saved his life, but it had not made him ready to call the replicant his sister, and Asa still hoped proof on paper might do what words could not.
Stahl Corners Effie
Effie left Cal to retrieve a shared computer folder that incriminated Tyrell, against his advice to hunt the Nexus-5 first. Stahl was already waiting in Effie's apartment with hired men and a deadline that left no room to bargain. She wanted the files, the prototype's trail, and Effie's silence in that order, and she made clear that Lydia's transfer work was no longer a secret Tyrell would leave in junior hands.
At the same time Cal reached Lydia's empty rooms and used his lighter to trigger the sprinklers, revealing hired men waiting in cloaks. He fought them off just long enough to keep the path open for Asa, who was still moving through the building after the spinner crash. Stahl's pressure on Effie and the ambush at Lydia's rooms closed around the same hour, squeezing the case from both ends while Cal burned through another set of Tyrell contractors.
Rooftop Pursuit
Cal chased Asa from the apartment onto the rooftops and down into the street while Effie abandoned a cab to stop him from killing the wrong target. The pursuit ran into the museum, where exhibits and stairwells broke the chase into short, violent bursts. Cal still believed Asa was the escaped Nexus-5 until the museum fight forced a harder look at who he was hunting, and Effie paid for getting between them.
Stahl found them there and shot Effie rather than let the junior bioengineer finish what she knew. She gave Cal one week to eliminate the Nexus-5 and find Marcus, then walked away from Effie's body as if the deadline were ordinary corporate policy. The rooftop chase ended with a dying witness and a clock Stahl alone controlled, and Cal was left holding the only person who had tried to stop him from killing the wrong target.
Effie's Death
Cal knew Asa was still close enough to hear, and he called the replicant forward to say goodbye while Effie died in the rain. Asa cradled her and spoke as if Lydia's guilt and Effie's friendship both lived in the same body. He could not cry in that chassis, and he said so while he held her, mourning in words the body would not give him as the arched walk filled with rain and blood.
Cal confirmed that Asa carried Lydia's mind but was not the escaped Nexus-5, and the two agreed to work together against Stahl's week-long hunt. They would protect people in the slums and finish the trail Effie had died to keep open, even if the badge could not cover what came next. The alliance began over her body, not in a boardroom, with rain still falling on the arched walk where she had been shot.
An Alliance With Asa
After Effie fell, Cal and Asa left the body behind and walked out through a dark arched hallway into heavy rain. Cal told Asa that making this right was not what they were doing, and Asa answered that it was another thing entirely. Their reflections followed them across the wet floor while Stahl's deadline still hung over the slums, and neither man pretended the week ahead would end clean or that Effie's death would stay quiet.
Cal, Marcus, and Asa took shelter with Divina at La Plume Sauvage so Marcus would stay out of Stahl's reach. Cal went back to the precinct with a false report that accepted the suicide ruling, buying time while he worked the real lead off the books. He left the force rather than keep covering for Tyrell's grip on the LAPD, because the badge could not protect the people Stahl was prepared to burn.
Arnault Turns
The next sign of the awakenings came from a downtown apartment, where the household's Nexus-4 servant Arnault had worked the kitchen for years in a blue apron. Contact with Nia had woken something in him that Tyrell never meant a domestic model to carry, and the change broke him rather than freed him. Caught in a loop he could not escape, asking why over and over, Arnault took up a kitchen knife and turned it on the family he had been built to serve.
Cal reached the apartment door just as Asa, bleached-blonde and dressed in tactical black, smashed through the kitchen window in a spray of glass to stop the servant before he killed anyone. Together they subdued Arnault and carried him out of the wrecked home to La Plume Sauvage, hoping Divina's people could learn what had happened inside him. Arnault did not last long there, but his short, broken awakening gave Cal his first real look at what Nia's spark could do to a mind that was never designed to question.
Arnault's Loop
At La Plume Sauvage, Cal and Asa set Arnault's extracted loop core on a white-tablecloth table while the glowing dome repeated the same word for hours. A man bent over the device said something had triggered a break in the loop structure, and Cal stood with his arms crossed and called the exercise a waste. Divina's bartender asked if they could stop it while "...why..." kept spilling from the dome into the dim lounge.
Asa argued that an existential thought might explain a Nexus-4 asking why, even though Tyrell bioengineers had stripped that capacity from pre-market models. Divina listened without comfort, and Cal weighed whether the market exposure had woken something Tyrell never meant to ship into private homes. They took Arnault's crisis as proof that Stahl's deadline was colliding with a wider failure in the city's servant class, not a single escaped prototype. If one servant could ask why, others already sold into homes across Los Angeles might be asking the same question in silence.
All Caps
Cal's search for the escaped prototype led him into Sector 6-B and the bar All Caps, where old neighborhood faces still remembered him. Childhood friend Desiree and local enforcer Carlisle locked him in and beat him as a message meant for Tyrell rather than for a detective badge. They believed Cal still worked for the company that burned their streets, and they meant to send him back bloody before he could bring Stahl's hunt into their bars.
Desiree stopped the beating long enough to test whether Cal had really left the force and whether he would hunt the Nexus-5 for Stahl. When he convinced her he was hunting Tyrell's lie instead, she chose to lead him deeper into the slums rather than dump him in an alley. All Caps became the door through which Cal finally reached the prototype's protectors, and the badge he had left behind no longer opened any door that mattered there.
The Nexus-5 Revealed
Desiree brought Cal to the people sheltering the escaped prototype, and the face waiting for him was his sister's. The Nexus-5 was Nia Moreaux, living in a new body after Lydia transferred her mind following the Kindred Elementary bombing. She had been waking other replicants in Sector 6-B and leading them out of servitude while Stahl's clock ran, and Cal had spent the case chasing a murderer who turned out to be family.
Cal had spent the case chasing a murderer and found his sister leading a quiet revolt instead. Nia told him Tyrell would never stop hunting awakened units, and she asked whether he would stand with the slums or with Stahl's deadline. The reveal turned the investigation into a family crisis and a street war at the same time, with Isaac and Desiree already fighting beside her while Cal still held Stahl's clock in his pocket.
Nia's Awakened
With Cal among them, Nia kept moving awakened replicants through Sector 6-B and out of the jobs Tyrell had assigned them. Isaac stayed close as her partner from before the transfer, and Desiree handled the human contacts who tipped them off to raids. The group rewarded the children who had warned them and killed the men who tried to drag awakened units back into ownership, widening the target on every street they used.
Nia's plan was larger than hiding: she meant to break Stahl's hold before the executive burned the sector to ash. Cal saw that the awakened were already fighting as a community, not as scattered broken servants waiting for a detective to save them. Every rescue widened the target on the slums and shortened the week Stahl had given him to deliver a corpse, until the choice was no longer hunt or hide but which side of the fire he would stand on.
Stahl's Militia
Ilora Stahl answered the awakenings with militia units and Tyrell security rather than with police paperwork. Armed teams pushed into the markets and stairwells of Sector 6-B, hunting Nia's people and anyone who fed them. Stahl treated the sector as a problem to erase before Eldon Tyrell's public schedule forced her hand, and she no longer bothered to pretend the hunt was a police matter or that the week she had given Cal was anything but cover for the burn.
Cal and Asa fought through those raids while Marcus still hid under Divina's roof at La Plume Sauvage. The militia's advance turned alley fights into a running battle that the local enforcers could not win alone. Stahl's deadline was no longer a threat on paper; it was boots and rifles in the streets, and every night the sector lost ground Cal could not buy back with a badge or a false report at the precinct.
Cal Confronts Nia
Cal finally cornered Nia and argued that assassinating Ilora Stahl would make every replicant in the city a target. Nia refused to be trapped again and told him Tyrell would extinguish their community after any broadcast that named them as animals. She asked him to tear the system apart from the inside if her plan failed, even if that meant becoming the hunter the city would later call a blade runner.
Cal heard the request as a demand to become a slave catcher for Tyrell while pretending to protect the people Stahl wanted dead. Nia apologized for asking and still would not yield the assault on the broadcast. The argument ended without agreement, and both of them prepared for the fight that followed, knowing Stahl's fire was already moving through the markets and that the blade runner path she named was a trap as much as a plan.
Fight With Filip
In the same streets a deranged awakened Nexus-4 named Filip hunted with a curved knife and a bloody face, leaping through debris while Asa shouted a warning. Filip fixed on eyes and strength the way a broken unit fixed on a single command, and he slammed into Cal hard enough to put both men into the rubble. Nia attacked Asa when she recognized Lydia's mind in his body, and the three-way fight tore through rain and broken concrete.
Cal nearly strangled Asa in the wreckage before Asa vowed to be better than Lydia had been. They found Filip attacking Nia, and Asa finally beheaded the Nexus-4 before Filip could finish her. The kill stopped one monster and left Stahl's larger fire still coming for the sector, with no time left to mourn what the fight had cost or to pretend the next enemy would be only one broken unit.
Sector 6-B Burns
Stahl ordered her militia to destroy the entire sector, not only the marketplace, and to kill anyone who resisted the burn. Nia, Cal, Asa, Desiree, Marcus, and the awakened fought through smoke while stalls and housing went up around them. The order turned a manhunt into open warfare under Tyrell colors, and Sector 6-B burned whether the awakened ran or stood as Stahl's week closed in fire over every street she had marked for erasure.
Marcus helped Desiree move survivors even after he had once fed Stahl information about Asa. The battle for Sector 6-B turned the slums into a killing ground under black rain and burning canvas. Stahl's week ended in fire rather than in a quiet arrest, and the people who stayed paid for every hour she had given Cal to deliver a body that was never going to arrive on her terms. Marcus carried that guilt through the smoke, guiding families past militia lines while the market he had betrayed burned around them.
Isaac Falls
Nia sent her lover Isaac with Cal to reach Stahl while she and Asa hit the militia elsewhere. Isaac had been with Nia since before her transfer, and Cal promised to bring him back through the same smoke. They pushed toward Stahl's spinner under covering fire that thinned with every street they crossed, and the gap between them and her escape kept widening until the only cover left was the people still shooting.
Isaac was shot dead in that cover fire, and Cal reached Stahl's spinner just as she fled the sector. He found Nia cradling Isaac's body afterward and asking Asa for help that no transfer could give. Isaac's death fixed Nia's next move on Stahl herself, and the vow she chose next left no room for another week of waiting or for Cal's argument that the city would punish every awakened face.
Kindred Elementary
A year earlier, fifth-grade teacher Nia Moreaux had been ordered to train three Nexus-4 units at Kindred Elementary so they could replace human teachers. She stood before the staff with a folder and an ID badge, told them the students would return in two weeks, and met Isaac among the teachers who already knew too much. The school looked ordinary while Tyrell prepared to swap living faculty for owned machines.
Two weeks later Isaac gave Nia a decorative apple as a student once might have, and they stood in the hallway long enough to talk about ordinary things. An explosion tore through the school and buried that ordinary day under rubble and smoke. Nia's damaged body left the grounds in an ambulance that never reached a public hospital, because Tyrell had already claimed her for a different kind of rescue. The teacher Isaac had brought an apple to would wake again only after Lydia Kine's work gave her a body Tyrell had built.
The Transfer
Stahl's assistant Osha reported the blast, and Stahl ordered Nia's ambulance intercepted before it could reach an ordinary hospital. At Lydia's lab the damaged teacher was moved onto a transfer bed while Tyrell staff prepared a Nexus-5 body. Lydia pushed the consciousness transfer through even as the school's dead were still being counted, and the woman who woke in that chassis was no longer only a teacher but the prototype Stahl would later call a murder.
Back in 2009, with Isaac gone and La Plume Sauvage wrecked by Stahl's men, Nia chose the Latin vow ego colligunt and set out to stop Stahl. She told Desiree the broadcast assault was the only way left to put Tyrell's crimes on a signal the city could not ignore. The transfer that had saved her life now aimed her at the woman who had ordered the interception, and Cal's warnings would not turn her aside.
Assault On The Broadcast
Cal argued that assassinating Stahl would make every replicant a target, but Nia took Desiree to Tyrell headquarters anyway. Desiree crashed their spinner through the glass into the broadcast building while Nia fought security up the stairs toward the studio floor. Cal forced his own way into the same building as the live feed prepared to put Stahl on air, racing the same clock Nia had refused to obey and the gun she had already asked him to fire.
On air Stahl planned to acknowledge the failure of the Excel Program and promise to restore the destroyed slums with specialized replicants. Eldon Tyrell had already shaped the message she was meant to deliver, a soft rewrite of the fire she had ordered. Nia's assault turned that scripted broadcast into a hostage crisis the city would watch live, with no commercial break between Stahl's speech and the gun Cal was already carrying into the studio.
Nia Holds Stahl
Nia reached the studio, interrupted Stahl on camera, and held her at gunpoint on the floor while the host's interview collapsed. Earlier she had asked Cal to chase her into that room and kill her on air so the world would see a Black woman's face, not a blank replicant chassis. Stahl begged her not to finish it while smoke still hung over the set, and Nia held the shot long enough for Cal to do what she had asked.
Cal did what she asked and shot her through the heart on live television. Nia's death ended the uprising she had started, and Tyrell moved quickly to rewrite what the audience had just seen. The broadcast that was meant to save the awakened became the image Stahl used against them, and the city learned the wrong lesson from the only face Nia had wanted them to remember as Tyrell's purge began.
Tyrell's Ultimatum
In his candlelit office, with an owl perched behind his armchair and a chess set laid out beside him, Eldon Tyrell told Stahl that the awakening had never been her mission, but that the results had exposed a real problem in his replicants. Despite every security measure his bioengineers built into Nexus development, the potential for divergence from protocol remained, and short life spans or other internal measures would not be enough on their own.
Tyrell gave Stahl two orders. First, she would do whatever was necessary to repair the damage and help the residents of Sector 6-B, including a public apology for what her militia had burned. Second, she would devise an external measure of control for the day future replicants went rogue the way the Nexus-5 and its awakened followers had, a human answer standing outside the machines rather than inside their code.
The First Blade Runner Unit
Two months later the LAPD blamed Lydia Kine and Effie Koropey for the awakened rebellion, and citizens began murdering replicants in the streets while the media cheered the purge. Cal accepted a badge in the new blade runner unit that would hunt rogue replicants under Stahl's quiet supervision. Asa and Divina sheltered refugees who escaped the killings, and Stahl routed rogue calls through Tyrell before the police ever saw them. The unit that Tyrell had demanded as an external control now wore an LAPD badge, and Cal was standing at the front of it.
At a rainy press conference outside the police department, Stahl promised that Tyrell would make future replicants safer beside the new unit. She told the crowd the city had been protected, and she left Cal standing in the rain as the public face of that protection. The first blade runners were born from the same fire that had burned Sector 6-B, with Stahl still writing the story the cameras would believe.
Cal And Asa Part
Cal vowed to bring Stahl down even as he accepted the badge that reported to her through back channels. He later met Asa on a rainy overlook where a spinner waited, and he warned him that the refugee trail out of the city was too visible for Stahl's people to miss. Asa stood in his trench coat against the headlights while Cal made the parting a threat as much as a goodbye, buying Asa time the badge was supposed to deny him.
Cal also asked Asa to use Effie's research to build a Voight-Kampff machine that could test blade runner candidates for empathy. He hoped future hunters would break the day empathy took over rather than become Stahl's perfect tools. They parted with that machine still unbuilt and the city still hunting the people Asa meant to save, leaving Cal inside the unit and Asa on the road out with refugees Stahl's channels had already begun to track.

Behind The Scenes
Titan Comics published the series with Alcon Publishing as a prequel set ten years before the 1982 film. The twelve issues went on sale from 10 March 2021 to 8 June 2022, with a Free Comic Book Day special shared with Blade Runner 2029 on 14 August 2021. K. Perkins, Mellow Brown, and Mike Johnson wrote the book, Fernando Dagnino drew it, Marco Lesko colored it, Jim Campbell lettered it, and David Leach edited it, with Michael Green credited as creative consultant. Titan collected the run in three volumes titled Products, Scrap, and Burning.
Each issue carried multiple covers. Early A covers included work by Artgerm, Angel Hernandez, Jesús Hervás, DaNi, Butch Guice, Alan Quah, Gene Ha, and Veronica Fish, with further variants by Peach Momoko, Robert Hack, Fernando Dagnino, and others. The sidebar image on this page uses Veronica Fish's cover A for the final issue, with Cal Moreaux walking toward the viewer while Ilora Stahl waits by a desk overlooking the city. On the Blade Runner timeline, the story falls in 2009, before the blade runner units of the later Titan books and before Deckard's hunt in November 2019.
Cal Moreaux later returned in Titan's Blade Runner 2039. In June 2024 editor David Leach said a second Origins series titled Cascade Year 2 was planned, though no release date was announced. It was one of several Blade Runner comics published by Titan after Blade Runner 2019, and it sits before the Ashina and Black Lotus books on the shared timeline.
Closing Thoughts
Blade Runner: Origins is Titan's twelve-issue prequel about how Los Angeles got its first blade runner unit. Detective Cal Moreaux began with a Tyrell suicide that was not a suicide, learned that his sister lived on as the Nexus-5, and ended the uprising by killing her on Stahl's broadcast as she had asked. Two months later he accepted the badge that reported to the same executive, asked Asa to build the Voight-Kampff test, and warned his ally that the next meeting would be a retirement.
