Blade Runner 4: Eye And Talon: Plot & Lore

Blade Runner 4: Eye and Talon is a 2000 novel by K. W. Jeter, published by Gollancz in Britain as the last authorized film sequel. It follows blade runner Iris Knaught through monsoon Los Angeles after Tyrell Headquarters has fallen and Captain Bryant is dead. Meyer sends her after Scrappy the owl, Eldon Tyrell's living bird, and the hunt ends in a desert lab where Rick Deckard waits with a child named Rachael, the pair last seen leaving Mars in Replicant Night.

Plot Summary

Iris Tests Leon In An Out-Take

A woman cop stood at a slit window above night Los Angeles, then sat down at a table with a Voigt-Kampff machine between her and a heavy-set man whose coveralls read Leon. Cigarette smoke hung under a slow ceiling fan while she told him not to move and started the desert questions, a man walking in sand, a tortoise flipped on its back. The words came out of her mouth as if they belonged to someone else, and Leon wrecked the timing by asking which desert and whether she wrote the questions down. She decided he was a replicant and went on because departmental procedure required the questions.

She skipped ahead, told him to forget the tortoise, and asked about his mother. Leon shot her through the table, smashed her chair through the prefab wall, and left her on the floor in a spreading pool of blood. Two other figures came into the room. Leon asked if that take had been all right, and one of them said he had been fine, then looked down at the dead woman and said this one had not worked either and that they would have to try another. That dead cop is Iris.

Iris Retires Enesque After The Club Chase

Iris Knaught treated blade-runner work as the thing she was best at and the thing she wanted. She chased escaped replicant Art Enesque out of a subterranean club under Angel's Flight, up through a sloping tunnel, and onto a high ledge beside a cloud-projected geisha advertisement that put a pill in its mouth over and over. Enesque leapt for her throat. She shot him, and his last garbled word may have been "choice" or "chance." She dismissed the word as soon as she heard it.

The corpse pinned her on the ledge until she shoved it over the edge and called an LAPD cleanup crew from her tight-cell. Enesque's blood ruined the cactus-motif silk shirt under her leatherite jacket. The head of the cleanup crew asked if she got off on that kind of kill, and she told him she loved the work. Captain Bryant was dead in his office by then, the U.N.'s Pacific Rim Tactical Command was circling a takeover of the city, and the hunters who were left were under performance review.

Meyer Assigns The Owl Bounty

Meyer, the new division head, met Iris in Bryant's trashed office while scanitorial machines crawled over empty Scotch bottles, old kill lists, and the dried blood on the floor. She wanted the double bounty on Enesque fronted that day. He refused, talked about a department-wide reorganization, and warned that if the U.N. took Los Angeles the old cops would not last long without departmental cover. The runners who failed the coming review would be retired the same way replicants were.

Escaped Nexus-6s had almost stopped coming to the city, and Meyer treated Enesque as the first useful kill in a long dry stretch. He then handed her a file that was not a replicant at all: a grainy photograph of Scrappy the owl, sixty-four centimeters tall, with a bounty higher than Enesque's double pay. Iris said she hunted replicants, not birds, and that a living owl in Los Angeles had to be a fake from the souk. Meyer said the owl was real, the band read Property of the Tyrell Corporation, and turning the assignment down would put her with the runners who were about to be cut.

Iris Watches Tyrell Feed Scrappy The Owl

Meyer gave her an unlabeled data-tab with the rest of the file. On the surresper she watched Eldon Tyrell in his penthouse feed Scrappy the owl a live white rat, then wipe blood from his fingers as if the bird were a piece of household equipment. The leg band on the bird read Property of the Tyrell Corporation. A second clip put Rick Deckard in that same room with Rachael and the owl. Rachael looked at the bird and called it artificial.

Iris ran the two clips until the feeding scene and the Deckard visit sat together. Tyrell was dead by then, killed by Roy Batty, and the corporation was defunct. Deckard was a partially erased ex-hunter, and Rachael introduced herself by name on the recording. Scrappy the owl was the only living Tyrell property Meyer could point to, so Iris took the hunt for the bounty. She did not know the bird carried a backup of anyone's mind.

Vogel Intercepts Iris At The Animal Souk

Dealers at Wings of Golden Smile offered her a special-order fake owl and denied dealing in real birds. She put a gun on the counter, showed them a printed still of Deckard, and was sent to a fish stall, then to an Arab reptile shop where the owner remembered Deckard asking about a snake scale. That trail ended in perfume and artificial coral snakes. Outside in the rain a buzz-cut man in a soaked duster used her name and told her she was wasting her time in the souk.

Iris pulled Vogel into an alley, smashed his face against her knee, and asked what he knew about Scrappy the owl. He said Meyer was out of the loop and that the kind of bird she wanted was not souk merchandise. She went with him to a crashed U.N. emigration blimp, where he played a live feed of the owl chained on an upper theater floor, watched by six or seven men with illegal Czech rifles. He would not name their employer. Hidden cameras recorded the alley beating, and a director in a control room left a drop of Vogel's blood on one lens rather than paint it out, then refused a camera operator who wanted Iris killed and replaced with a digitized actor.

Iris And Vogel Raid The Theater

Meyer passed two heavy armory cases to Iris at an abandoned warehouse on Traction Avenue, down by the concrete ditch of the Los Angeles River. A camera in the rafters recorded the handoff. Vogel supplied thermatos capsules that dropped body heat enough to beat the theater's thermal alarms, then showed off with a folding rifle in an alley until Iris told him the ranges would be indoors and close. They climbed an elevator shaft, used a glare grenade, and killed the men on the upper floor.

Iris bagged Scrappy the owl in an oxygen sack and left Vogel pinned in the firefight. She did not wait to see if he got out. At her apartment the surresper matched the live bird to the Tyrell-era archive, about a year older, and she fed it trap-mice from the building. She treated the hunt as finished and went to sleep while monsoon rain steamed against the glass.

A Stranger Steals The Owl From Iris

A man used or replaced her chat device and delivered a lethal neuro-shock through it while the bagged owl was in the apartment. He took Scrappy the owl and thanked her for retrieving the bird. The face is not named in that scene. Iris woke in an LAPD hospital with the hunt gone and Meyer standing over the bed as if the loss were her failure alone.

She had no owl, no bounty, and no useful description of the thief. Later, in the desert, Deckard admitted he had been the man in the apartment. He said the theft had been necessary and that leaving the owl with her would have gotten her killed. At the hospital she had no way to check that, and she did not thank him when she finally heard it.

Meyer Fires Iris And Hands Her The Band

Meyer terminated Iris from the blade-runner division and from the LAPD. He treated the lost owl as the failure that ended her review, then handed her the broken GPS-incised leg band as a souvenir. The band was the only piece of Scrappy the owl left in her possession. She walked out of the hospital with no badge and no bounty.

The coordinates on the band pointed to a ruin that dominates the city and that she had never registered as a place on her own map. The wreck was Tyrell Headquarters, dropped in the earlier novels and left as a hole she could not account for. Vogel met her there with an arm in a sling that turned out to be fake, because he had gotten out of the theater after she left him.

Iris Finds The Tyrell Ruins

Buried rooms under the wreck held candles, a private theater, and a working screen. Vogel played Urbenton's docudrama Blade Runner, a face-mapped restaging that used physiology-matched actors and then mapped the real faces over them. The film ran Holden and Leon, Deckard's recall to the police, Batty killing Tyrell, and Deckard fleeing with Rachael. Iris sat through it because Vogel would not let her leave the room.

She had never watched that broadcast, even though the rest of the city treated it as common knowledge. Vogel named the director as Urbenton and treated the film as a historic reconstruction rather than a street rumor. He also mentioned The Edge of Human on a shelf in the wreck and did not play it. Iris wanted out of the rubble more than she wanted the rest of the reel.

Vogel Shows Iris She Has Rachael's Face

Still frames put Rachael's face beside Iris's, and they matched. She broke into tears she could not place, then shoved the breakdown aside and told Vogel she did not care about his agenda, Scrappy the owl, or who wanted it. She treated the idea that blade runners might be replicants as an old locker-room joke and said she was going to dig herself out of the wreck. Vogel told her the face on the screen was the face her own face belonged to.

In the control room Urbenton swore because Vogel had not been supposed to tell her that. Hidden cameras had been on Iris since the souk, and the confession was an off-script leak in a faux-vérité shoot whose lead did not know she was being filmed. A burrowing production crew then drove Iris and Vogel up through the rubble to the ruin's peak. Non-LAPD spinners took her east from there. Vogel went with the same current as a handler who had been paid to steer her onto that path.

Spinners Take Iris To The Desert

The flight left monsoon Los Angeles and put down east of the sprawl, among dead road machines and a compound ringed by rusted earth-movers. Buried freeway signs for Pomona, Glendale, and Riverside stuck out of the sand, towns the city Iris thought she knew had swallowed. A guard gave her water and later handed her gun back. She walked into the main building without asking who owned the place.

An elderly man with a cane, Carsten, received her in a room where a wall of live owls watched from cages. None of them was Scrappy the owl. Carsten came out of the old Derain et Cie line. His committee was what remained of the pre-monopoly replicant firms, Sudermann, Grozzi, Derain, and the rest, after U.N. blue helmets had cleared the field for Tyrell. They wanted that bird because their rivals wanted it too, and they had brought Iris there to hear why.

Carsten Explains The Old Firms

The U.N. had given Tyrell the monopoly on replicant design and then turned on him when four years of life was no longer enough and he started building a way to go on forever. Carsten walked Iris through that history at length: blue-helmet clearance of the rival shops, Tyrell's grip on emigration labor, and the moment the same customer decided the man in the pyramid had become a problem. He treated Batty's killing of Tyrell as a useful crime someone had made possible, not as a street tragedy. Iris sat through it without asking for names she could use.

The committee needed Scrappy the owl and a Tyrell body with new eyes. Without both pieces the optical chain stayed broken, and the old firms had no way to take the next mind off the ice. Iris asked why a bird mattered if the eyes were the real prize. Carsten stopped talking in the main room and walked her into a trench that held a stolen workshop and a row of glass-lidded boxes. She told him she did not care about answers and went into the trench anyway.

Chew's Eyeworks Lab Sits In A Trench

The entire Chew neuro-optical shop, sign reading LA EYEWORKS, had been lifted from the city after Tyrell and Chew died and buried under the desert compound. Jars of disembodied eyes filled the benches, floating in fluid, and the worktables were the same ones Batty and Leon had walked through in Urbenton's film. Chew had been Tyrell's off-site eye man, hidden from U.N. inspection so the transfer work would not sit under the pyramid. Carsten moved down the line of jars as if they were inventory.

Eyes were the transfer channel. Ordinary replicant memories were loaded during construction. New experience, the stretch of life after that base load, went in through the eyes of the next body. Batty had crushed Tyrell's own eyes and stopped the next jump in the chain. Carsten drew his fingertips across the eyelids of the sleepers and took their eyes out, leaving each copy with empty sockets.

Tyrell's Sleepers Wait In A Row

Suspension caskets held multiple Eldon Tyrell bodies with slow pulses, laid out one after another along an ice-crusted chamber. They were meant to wake in sequence, not all at once, each body taking the last mind when the previous one failed. Iris put a hand on one of the corpses and felt a delayed heartbeat under the cold skin. Hidden cameras in the chamber iced over, and the control-room operator had to pulse power through the lenses to keep a picture.

Tyrell had solved gestalt decay well enough to plan that kind of immortality by optical mind transfer, and his enemies killed him before he used the row. Carsten treated the copies as a chain, not as a family. Each new body would have taken the last mind through a grafted pair of eyes. The compressed weekly backup of that mind sat in Scrappy the owl, not in the coffins, so without the bird and those eyes the sleepers had no next step.

Carsten Names The Owl As A Backup

Scrappy the owl carried a highly compressed set of Tyrell's mind and recent memories, updated about once a week in the old penthouse. An owl has binocular vision and leftover cortical space, and it can hunt if no one feeds it, which is why Tyrell housed the bird in his quarters as a living store rather than a pet. Carsten doubted Tyrell would have passed a real empathy test. The weekly update made the owl more current than any of the iced bodies in the trench.

Scrappy the owl was useless without a Tyrell replicant and new eyes. Carsten did not know who had taken the bird from Iris's apartment or why that thief would want a backup he could not implant. He offered Iris a last choice: walk into the sun and stay ignorant, or look in the remaining coffin. She had told him she did not care about answers. She told him to open the lid.

Iris Shoots The Sleeping Rachael

The last lid opened on a woman identical to Iris, a sleeper named Rachael. The woman woke with a cry, back arching off the silk lining, and Iris shot her through the collarbone before the scream finished. A second shot slammed the body back into the box. Blood filled the sleeper's mouth, and the chamber walls threw the gunshots back at them.

Carsten took the killing as suicide with the shooter left standing, and Iris could not say why she fired. In the control room Urbenton told the camera operator to stay on her face, then picked up a phone and said they were going in for the kill. Automatic fire started above the trench, bursts that were not in Carsten's schedule. He pulled Iris's gun from her hand and went to the door to see who had arrived.

Meyer Kills Carsten And Vogel

Evening had come on while they were underground, so no daylight poured in when Carsten opened the chamber door. Meyer stood in the silhouette and cut him down before the old man could raise the gun. Carsten's dying shot smashed a fluorescent fixture and dropped the lab into darkness. Iris crawled behind the coffins while Meyer's flashlight found the last box, the dead woman, and the face he had worked beside at the station.

Outside he told Vogel that he had found her and that he did not care what had happened, only that it had, then shot Vogel in the doorway for earned pay. Spinners lifted west toward Los Angeles. The compound was a slaughter of committee men and caged owls, the generator was down, and Iris took her gun from Carsten's hand. A smaller shadow crossed the starlight, two golden eyes, and Scrappy the owl flew toward a man waiting beyond the fence.

Deckard Meets Iris Under Strange Stars

Scrappy the owl dropped onto the raised arm of an older man with gray at the temples and a chin scar. A dark-haired girl in a single braid walked beside him, held his hand, and said her name was Rachael. Iris knew the man from Urbenton's movie as Deckard, older than the mapped face on the screen, and she knew he was the thief from her apartment. He said the theft had been for her sake and that she would not have been alive if the owl had stayed with her.

Deckard took her hand and started toward an unmarked spinner parked in a dune hollow. When she asked if they were going back to Los Angeles, the girl said that was not possible. Deckard told Iris she could not go back to the real city if she had never been there, then pointed at a sky whose constellations were not Earth's. Iris said the stars proved nothing. He walked on without looking back, and she followed him and the child to the spinner.

Scrappy The Owl And The Optical Chain

Tyrell hid the transfer work in Chew's shop and hid a weekly backup of his mind in Scrappy the owl. New experience moved through the eyes of the next body, and Batty stopped that jump by crushing Tyrell's eyes. Carsten's committee needed both the bird and a sleeper with a new pair of eyes. Meyer's raid wrecked the desert copies of the owl and left the live Scrappy with Deckard.

Key Characters

• Iris Knaught was an LAPD blade runner who retired Art Enesque, left Vogel in a firefight, refused Carsten's answers, shot a sleeping Rachael double, and followed Deckard to a spinner after denying the stars. The book does not settle what she is.
• Rick Deckard was older than the man in Urbenton's film. He stole the owl from Iris's apartment, arrived with the child Rachael, and led Iris toward a spinner under unfamiliar stars.
• Rachael appears as a sleeping duplicate Iris shot and as a child walking with Deckard. The child matches the girl who left Mars in the previous novel.
• Scrappy the owl was Tyrell's real bird and the carrier of a compressed backup of his mind. Deckard held the owl at the end.
• Meyer ran the blade-runner division after Bryant. He armed Iris, fired her, then raided the desert lab and killed Carsten and Vogel.
• Vogel steered Iris toward the theater and the Tyrell ruins, then died in Meyer's cleanup.
• Carsten spoke for the old replicant firms. He opened the Tyrell coffins and Chew's lab, then died in the doorway.
• Urbenton filmed Iris from a control room and never met her on the page.
• Eldon Tyrell was dead, with sequential copies waiting in ice and an owl that had been his backup.
• Art Enesque was the escaped replicant Iris killed under the geisha ad.
• Leon appears in the Out-Take and shoots the first Iris.
• Captain Bryant was dead in his office when Meyer inherited the room.

Editions

Gollancz published the first hardcover in December 2000 at 236 pages, with jacket art credited to Images Colour Library. The 2001 Gollancz paperback, the copy this page follows for the text, keeps that page count and carries a starfield design with the Blade Runner 4 mark. There was no simultaneous American hardcover, and copyright sits with the Philip K. Dick Trust. The novel is the fourth book in Jeter's authorized film line and the last he published in that sequence, and no later Jeter Blade Runner novel continues Iris's walk to the spinner.

Behind The Scenes

Jeter dedicated the book to Patrick Gyger. The text uses a Leon Out-Take in screenplay form, then sixteen numbered chapters and five Intercut control-room scenes that let Urbenton film Iris while she thought she was on a police hunt. The copy used here is the 2001 British paperback printed by Clays. Sarah Tyrell and Isidore are not named. Hazeldine's unproduced Blade Runner Down and Villeneuve's later Blade Runner 2049 are separate follow-ups, not sources for Iris or Scrappy the owl.

Conclusion

Blade Runner 4: Eye and Talon is K. W. Jeter's 2000 close to the authorized sequels. It follows Iris Knaught's hunt for Scrappy the owl through Los Angeles and Carsten's buried desert lab, then ends with the sleeping Rachael dead, Meyer's raid finished, and Deckard leading Iris and a child toward a spinner under stars that do not match Earth. The novel does not resolve whether her Los Angeles was Earth. How this Jeter line sits beside the film and novel continuities is covered in the Blade Runner canon guide.
