Blade Runner 2029 is a twelve-issue Titan Comics series written by Mike Johnson and drawn by Andres Guinaldo, published with Alcon Publishing from December 2020 to February 2022. Set ten years after Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, it followed the blade runner Aahna "Ash" Ashina, now secretly helping the Replicant Underground, as she hunted Yotun, a Nexus 6 replicant who had outlived his lifespan and led an army against Los Angeles.
The Story
The Rescue At The Hideout
The first issue opened in 2017, twelve years before the main story, with Yotun arriving in disguise at the shop of a broker who promised to help replicants disappear. The broker had sold him out, and a young Aahna "Ash" Ashina was waiting with a shotgun to retire him. Yotun overpowered her in a brutal fight that wrecked the shop. Instead of killing her, he told Ash to go back and tell her bosses that she had failed and that a replicant had shown her mercy. He promised that she would never find him again.
The story then jumped to 2029, where Ash confronted a rich man who had bought a redheaded replicant from the same kind of broker. She knocked him out and took the frightened woman with her, telling her it was the last time anyone would buy her. Back home, her lover Freysa treated the pain in Ash's spine and her failing back brace. Freysa urged her to throw away the badge, but Ash insisted on staying inside the department, where she could feed codes and logistics to the Replicant Underground.
A Skinjob At The Seawall
A sergeant pulled Ash off her other work and sent her to the Los Angeles seawall, where an anonymous tip claimed that a replicant was working the construction. The seawall was a high profile public project, and the department wanted the case closed quietly. Ash flew through toxic rain, remembering that she had been Off-World when the tsunami hit in 2025. On the site she spotted a man in orange overalls working in the rain without a helmet, a sign that he did not fear the weather.
The worker ran as soon as he saw her, and Ash chased him up through the concrete structure while her spine burned with pain. She ordered him to stop and told him she only wanted to talk. Cornered on the scaffolding, the man said the words "Yotun redeems" and fell to his death. The name rang a faint bell for Ash, the replicant who had beaten her and walked away twelve years earlier.
Searching The Analog Files
Back at headquarters, Ash went through the department's old analog files for any trace of Yotun. The paper records had survived where much of the digital data had not, and among them she found his portraits. The issue ended on these faces, a sign that the replicant Ash had let slip in 2017 was still alive and now leading others. A Nexus 6 model had a four-year lifespan, so his survival raised a question that drove the rest of the series.
Poison At The Banquet
In the second issue, a servant replicant named Ducasse poured wine for a table of wealthy diners in a grand dining hall. The diners began to choke and die, poisoned at their own banquet, while the narration spoke of servants being everywhere because their owners could not fend for themselves. A hooded follower told Ducasse that it could not have been easy, since he had often spoken of his employer's kindness. Ducasse replied that the man had been good to him but was not one of them. The follower told him to keep the key safe, because only one last lock remained before redemption.
The Coroner's Finding
At the morgue, the coroner Pearl examined the body of the seawall worker and found no serial number in his eye. She saw no sign that the eye had been swapped or the number scored off, so the dead man looked as womb-born as any human. It was too late for a Voight-Kampff test. Ash told her that the man had seen her, known why she was there and run, and that he had named a replicant she had chased years before.
The foreman said that five other workers had vanished after the death, which suggested the dead man had not worked alone. Pearl explained that the only surviving models were numbered Nexus 8s, so an unnumbered replicant meant that someone was making bootlegs. The address the foreman had given for the deceased led Ash to an empty butcher shop off La Cienega. The case was officially closed, but Ash could not let it go.
Inside The Diamant
Ash went to the Diamant, a hidden club open only to replicants, where she was welcome because she had helped free many of its patrons. The doorkeeper Sally warned her to be careful because new faces had started coming in. Inside, Ash asked Evelyn whether the name Yotun meant anything, and a redheaded woman down the bar turned at the sound of it. The redhead hurried out, and Sally said she was new but had been vouched for.
Ash chased the woman through the crowded street and leapt onto her taxi, smashing through the door and tumbling to the ground. Her back brace saved her, and the redhead escaped on a Metrokab, leaving her purse behind. The address inside led Ash and Freysa to a luxury apartment, where the owner said he had only just met the woman, who claimed to be fresh from Off-World. Freysa said that whoever had freed her was not part of the Underground, and Ash asked where these replicants were coming from.
Yotun's Tanks
The third issue revealed Yotun among rows of glowing tanks, where he told Kalia that his new family would make memories of their own instead of having them implanted. He wondered aloud whether he was any better than Tyrell, and Kalia insisted that he restored life rather than profiting from it. She told him he was tiring and needed another rejuvenation. At headquarters, Ash learned that the blade runner Ruskin had been found dead at home with his spine torn out.
Ruskin had been investigating the murder of the banker Hyman Bask, who had been poisoned with his wife while a servant vanished with his eye. The sergeant put Ash on the Bask case, and she learned that the missing servant was Ducasse, a replicant with no records. At his base, Yotun asked his followers who would volunteer their blood, and Ducasse said he had silenced the hunter who sought him. The redhead Lelia then told Yotun that she had seen Ash, and he ordered her to find the blade runner again.
Lelia In The Apartment
Ash learned that Bask had been due to attend the mayor's dinner aboard an airship that night, a party celebrating progress on the seawall. Arriving home, she found Lelia waiting inside her apartment. Lelia explained that she had followed Ash home after watching her and Freysa break into her apartment the night before. She said that Yotun remembered Ash and wanted to see her again, but refused to say whether he had killed Bask or Ruskin.
When Ash threatened her, Lelia attacked and overpowered her in a brutal fight that tore through the apartment. She choked Ash into silence, saying she did not want to break her ribs. As Ash struggled, Lelia told her to be quiet. Freysa arrived moments too late and could only shout after her lover as Lelia carried her away. Ash was now in the hands of the replicants she had been hunting.
Boarding The Mayor's Airship
At the airship dock, Yotun's party presented themselves as guests of the mayor on behalf of the late Hyman Bask. The attendant told them that eyeprint verification was needed to unlock the hatch. Yotun asked Lily to deal with it, and the guards were shot down. The eye taken from Bask was then held up to the scanner, the key that Ducasse had spoken about in the previous issue. The issue ended with Yotun announcing that the time for redemption had come.
The Opening Ceremony
In the fourth issue, airship nine-one-seven was cleared for departure from Los Angeles. Yotun's people seized the bridge, and he announced a change in command before leaving the controls to Pekka. He then walked into the banquet hall and greeted the guests as the angels of the city. Apologising for the guns, he told the gathered elite that he had come to teach them a lesson, and that by the end of the night the city itself would learn one.
Elsewhere, Ash woke in chains inside Yotun's base, where Kalia told her that Yotun was a miracle who had outlived his four years. A replicant named Jac, whom Ash had helped escape his owner the year before, then came to free her. Jac showed her the tanks, where Yotun was reviving Nexus 8s that had never been shipped and were left to rot after the Blackout. Lelia shot him dead before they could escape, saying she had never trusted his faith.
The Seawall Breaks
Aboard the airship, Mayor Chen asked Yotun what he wanted and promised that nobody else needed to be hurt. Yotun answered that he wanted the same thing she did, the seawall, and that the difference was what they wanted to do with it. He accused the guests of banning replicants while keeping them as servants in their homes. He told them that their servants were freeing themselves across the city that night.
Yotun then revealed that replicant hands had built the seawall and had been doing his bidding the whole time. Explosions tore through the wall, which had been close to completion, and the sea rushed into the city. As the guests watched the flood from above, Yotun told them not to call it destruction but a baptism. In a single night, his followers struck at the city's defences and its ruling class.
The Airship Falls
A pink-haired woman told Yotun that their ride was waiting. He said goodbye to the guests and left the airship on a small craft, while the airship's controls were disabled behind him. The giant ship fell from the sky and exploded with the mayor and her guests still on board. Watching the blast, Yotun declared that Los Angeles was dead and that a new Los Angeles would rise in its place. His war against the city had begun.
Los Angeles After The Flood
The fifth issue opened with news reports of the catastrophe at the seawall, which had killed the mayor and many of the city's most influential people. Yotun watched the streets and said that more than a wall had been breached. A police patrol then tried to stop his spinner as Pekka flew it through the city. Yotun's followers tore the patrol apart in a violent chase and sent the police spinner crashing down.
Ash woke in Yotun's base, where her captors told her that Yotun would be back soon. She attacked one of them as soon as she could. Lelia let her run, saying she would soon find out for herself. Ash fled through a huge old factory and realised that she was a long way from the city. Meanwhile Freysa met Silka, a replicant who had just escaped and admitted that she knew where Ash was being held.
The Red-Robed Followers
Ash stumbled through mountains of trash, unsure whether she was in the Inland Empire or the desert. A spinner found her, and she hoped it was a random patrol, but it belonged to Yotun. He reminded her that the last time they met he had knocked her out with her own gun. He explained that he had built his new home inside a waste treatment plant buried under the trash of the city.
Yotun drugged Ash and brought her, barely able to protest, before his followers, who were dressed in red robes. One by one, they came forward and reminded Ash of how she had retired them, including one who said she had been the first replicant Ash ever killed. Yotun had brought back as many of these broken and discarded bodies as he could find. He said he believed that Ash remembered them all.
Given New Life
Yotun subjected Ash to a drug-induced brainwashing process and then placed her inside one of his rejuvenation tanks. The narration spoke of mercy and of being broken and given new life. It was the same treatment that had kept Yotun alive past his expiration date, now used on the blade runner who had once tried to retire him. The issue ended with Ash floating in the tank, her fate unclear.
The Power Station Raid
In the sixth issue, a group of replicants walked into the control room of a power station and threatened the technicians. They warned that shutting it down would leave five entire sectors of the city without power. At his base, Yotun spoke to Ash as she healed in her tank. He told her that his people were fanning out across the city and putting pressure on the systems that sustained it, and that when she woke she would not recognise Los Angeles.
Yotun was then told that new replicants had arrived. Lelia introduced Silka, who had run away a month before, and the Underground members Farhad and Dyson, who had brought Freysa. They claimed that they were tired of preaching peace and had cut the power to five sectors as an act of good faith. Yotun said he admired their bravery but suspected that Freysa had offered herself as bait to rescue her lover.
Inside Yotun's Lair
Yotun told Freysa that she had made a mistake but that he would not kill her or her friends. He thanked them for the power outage and said he wanted Ash to wake up in a new world. He said he was leaving on a mission, perhaps the most important one, and that Freysa would come with him. Freysa played along, and the two of them left for the city to see the new world born.
Across Los Angeles, the lights went out. At the Diamant, Sally and Evelyn heard that replicants were attacking power stations and police stations across the city. Evelyn remembered that Ash had come to her a few days earlier asking about Yotun. Back at the base, Farhad and Dyson were told to stay put. They knocked out their guard and headed for the tanks, guessing that Ash was still asleep because Yotun had spoken about her waking up.
Ash Breaks Free
The rescue team found the tank where Ash was being held and drained it. As she came round, Dyson asked whether she was okay, and Ash said that she felt fine. The team fought their way out through Yotun's followers in a shootout and escaped in an elevator with Silka. Ash soon realised that something had changed, because she felt too fine. When she asked where Freysa was, the others told her that Yotun had taken her on what he called the most important mission. Silka had heard Yotun talk about his plans, and the issue ended with her saying that she knew where he was going.
Ash Joins The Department
The seventh issue opened with a flashback to 2011 at LAPD headquarters, where a twenty-one-year-old Ash had been brought in under arrest. Detective Wojciech questioned her about stealing from the rich and selling to others. Wojciech saw a brain in the girl and asked whether she had ever thought of going after bigger fish, and noticed the spinal brace on her back. She promised to keep her eye on Ash, years before the events of Blade Runner 2019.
In 2029, Ash woke for the first time in her life without pain. Whatever had been in Yotun's tank had healed her spine, and she no longer needed her glasses. Farhad reported that Yotun was attacking police headquarters and argued that the Underground should wait. Ash agreed that the others should stay safe, but she left alone, saying that Yotun was keeping Freysa alive for something and that she would bring her back.
The Battle Of Mesa Echo Erebus
The issue then showed a memory of Freysa, a combat medic with the serial number 8-32943. Replicants like her had their medical skills implanted along with their memories, but no human could give them memories of battles like those fought Off-World. Her last battle was at Mesa Echo Erebus in 2021, where tanks and gunships fought around a fortress built into the rock. She remembered angels falling from the sky and being saved from the mesa.
Eight years later, battle found Freysa again in Los Angeles. Yotun had used the chaos around the city to draw the police out of their headquarters and had then bombed the spinners left on the roof. Freysa warned him that the attack was suicide, but he told her that the tired police were no match for replicants who had waited years in bondage. His followers breached the upper floors and gunned down the officers inside.
Racing To The Tower
As his followers fought through the building, Yotun told Freysa that Eldon Tyrell had not been afraid of his nightmares and had made them real. He said that Tyrell never loved the city, which had banned his creations on Earth. Pekka reported that the upper floors were secured and the police were retreating to ground level. Yotun warned Freysa that she would die if she acted against him. Meanwhile, Ash borrowed wheels from Boushaki's shop off Vineland and raced across the city, hearing news of palaces burning and replicants striking behind the gates. She thought of Freysa, who had once saved her, and knew it was now her turn.
Justice Dispensed
The eighth issue opened with a servant replicant killing a sleeping owner in bed, while the narration declared that shackles had been broken and justice dispensed. Across the city, replicants turned on the humans they served. At LAPD headquarters, Yotun told Freysa that the building was now home to his people. Freysa warned him that the police would regroup and outnumber them, and he replied that he had anticipated that. Then he collapsed in pain.
His followers begged him to take another transfusion and offered him their blood. Yotun insisted that there was no time and that he was fine. Freysa realised that the blood was how he had lived past his expiration date. She accused him of being a Nexus 6 feeding on Nexus 8s and treating his soldiers as a food source, no better than the humans who had exploited them. Yotun warned her that she was valuable to him, but not that valuable.
Yotun Takes The LAPD
Ash slipped into the building she had known for thirteen years. She knew where the useful things were hidden and where the bodies were buried, and she killed Yotun's followers one by one as they swept the floors. Without her old brace, she climbed the stairs faster than ever. Yotun had brought the Off-World wars home. She realised that Yotun had not healed her to help her but to control her.
In the comms centre, Yotun broadcast a message to the city. He introduced himself as combat model replicant NGMAA10854, with an incept date of 23 February 2016, and said that he had chosen his own name. He said the city was dark that night because he chose it. He told the people that the police were now the persecuted and that replicants would protect them as benevolent gods. Before he could finish, Freysa cut the feed.
The Tower Burns
Yotun accused Freysa of wanting to stay in a world where their kind was marked for servitude and death. He blinded her in one eye, saying she would be marked as well. Ash discovered that the building had been wired with explosives to burn from the inside out. She fought through the gunfire to the comms centre, where Yotun told her that she would have to choose between catching him and saving Freysa.
Ash had no time to chase him. She chose Freysa and found her in the flames, bleeding from her ruined eye and whispering Ash's name. The building shook as bombs went off on the floors below, and Yotun and his troops escaped. Yotun's people had destroyed the spinner depot on their way out, so there were no rides left. A spinner finally reached the women on the roof as the tower burned.
The Doheny Care Facility
The ninth issue opened six months after the attacks at the Doheny Care Facility, where a care worker named Ambrose stayed with the dying Mr. Bergen in his last moments. Later, Ambrose's manager, Lambert, called him into his office, where armed police were waiting with a blade runner. Since the attacks, every employer had been checking its personnel records for hidden replicants. The blade runner began a Voight-Kampff test, and Ambrose apologised to Lambert for what was about to happen.
News reports soon described Ambrose as a dangerous combat model who had been missing since the Rakenu campaign in 2025. Ash and Freysa tracked him down and offered to take him to the Underground. Pekka then appeared and told Ambrose that Yotun had sent her to rescue a fellow replicant. A fight broke out, and Pekka escaped with Ambrose. Ash and Freysa then found that the dead replicants left behind all bore the same strange sickness.
Back On The Streets
At the Rampart division, the sergeant told Ash that police headquarters had burned and that every blade runner in the city was hunting Yotun. Ash had told the department only that Yotun had caught her and that she had escaped, and she had led them to his landfill hideout, which they found scraped clean. The sergeant gave her one week to find a new lead. If she failed, she would have to partner with the blade runner Marlowe.
Elsewhere, Yotun showed Ambrose one of his many homes and told him that he needed the devotion and strength of his family. Ash and Freysa walked through the downtown markets, where Freysa had to hide her eyepatch because it marked her as a replicant. They had moved home every week since the attacks. Ash told Freysa that the department wanted her to take a partner, which would make life dangerous for both of them.
A Rival Blade Runner
Back at Rampart, the sergeant met Marlowe and told him that Ash had refused a partner. He wanted to know where she went and who she was with. If a blade runner was helping replicants, the sergeant said, it would burn down what was left of the department. He ordered Marlowe to report back if he found proof. But if Marlowe found himself with limited options, the sergeant told him to do what he had to. The issue closed on Marlowe standing in the rain, now following Ash. For Ash, secretly working with the Underground, the new hunt meant that a colleague was now watching her every move.
The Failing Cure
The tenth issue opened with Yotun's clearest memory, of learning as a child that death could be beautiful by looking at a dead owl in the snow. At his base, he thanked Ambrose for his gift after draining his blood. Pekka noticed that Ambrose had been left catatonic, unlike the other replicants who had given blood. Yotun explained that Ambrose had not been one of his own and had not received the awakening he had given the Nexus 8s. He said that Ambrose had still given him the strength he needed to see their mission through to the end.
The Diary Of Eldon Tyrell
Replicant hysteria was running high across Los Angeles. Ash answered a call from Boxton, a manager whose most secure vault had been broken into. The guards had been killed bare-handed, and the cameras showed a young woman escaping into the clock tower. Boxton had first assumed the woman was a victim, but the cameras showed otherwise. Ash kept the rest of the department away, worried that Yotun's people were tapping police comms.
Ash found the woman hiding in the clockwork and offered to take her to the Underground, but the woman attacked her, and Ash had hoped to avoid a fight. Ash noticed an old twinge in her spine and wondered whether Yotun's cure was failing. She recognised the thief as Pekka and asked where her friend was. Pekka said that whatever she had found in the vault, Yotun was never going to tell her where he was.
Pekka Falls
Before Pekka could finish, she was shot dead by Marlowe, who had followed Ash to the vault. He asked what had happened to retirement on sight. Ash was furious, because Pekka had been her best link to Yotun. Pekka's partner escaped while Marlowe distracted her, and Marlowe claimed he was only trying to help. He told Ash that the sergeant was worried about her missed results, and she told him to worry about his own.
Ash learned that the vault belonged to Alice Leopold, an old woman who had been dead for three years and had paid to keep it closed for a century. It held only files and books. At his base, Yotun told Kalia that he remembered writing a secret diary as a child, a memory that Tyrell had given him. He revealed that the diary had been kept by Alice Leopold, born Alice Tyrell, the younger sister of Eldon Tyrell.
Sabotage At The Plant
The eleventh issue began with Ash on her way to Rampart when she was called to the industrial sector, where a replicant had been spotted near the flame jets. Ash complained that half of these calls turned up nothing, because Yotun had the whole city seeing ghosts. The workers told her they had caught replicants breaking into one of the control rooms to sabotage the plant. They said the intruders did not look human.
Ash found three replicants who had dropped dead without anyone touching them. With his last breath, one of them whispered that Yotun redeems. The supervisor said he would send a janitor for the bodies. Ash reasoned that the replicants had not walked to the plant, so their spinner had to be nearby. Elsewhere, Marlowe paid a child to let him into an apartment, where he confronted Freysa and demanded the names and locations of every replicant she had hidden.
The Elixir Fails
Ash found the replicants' battered spinner and hoped that its coordinate log would lead her back to Yotun. Kalia was waiting inside and said that Yotun had spared Ash so she could witness the new world being born. Ash told her that the dead replicants had rashes on their bodies and asked whether Yotun had them too. Kalia said that Yotun was strong, said goodbye and blew up the spinner with a remote detonation.
Believing Ash dead, Yotun showed Kalia the diary of Eldon Tyrell. He believed it confirmed that he was Tyrell's most special creation, the one implanted with Tyrell's own memories. He said he had only ever been able to revive replicants, not create new ones, and that the diary pointed the way to Tyrell's greatest secret. Meanwhile, Freysa fought off Marlowe and shot him, and he died warning her that it was too late because they knew.
Ash Is Arrested
Ash survived the blast and got the coordinates she needed, which placed Yotun in the heart of downtown. She decided not to go in alone this time and headed for the police. On the way, her spine flared with pain, and she realised it was reverting just like Yotun's replicants were deteriorating. She hoped her own decline would not be as terminal. At Rampart, she told the sergeant, Esper, that she knew where Yotun was.
Ash tried to tell him there was no time, but Esper told her to give up her gun and badge. Armed officers surrounded her as he explained that Marlowe had reported in before he died. The department knew she had been working with the Replicant Underground while serving as a blade runner, and Esper said he was disappointed that she thought she could get away with it. The issue ended with Esper placing Detective Aahna Ashina under arrest.
Wojciech's Favor
In the final issue, the police led Ash out of the building in the rain to transfer her to the Westside. An old woman with an umbrella asked the officers for a minute, and they recognised her as Wojciech, Ash's former mentor. Wojciech said she was disappointed in her old protégé, who had earned her badge back only to throw it away again, and called her curb trash. Then Freysa, now wearing an eyepatch, took down the officers.
Ash explained that she had used her phone call to reach Wojciech. Freysa told Ash that Marlowe had ambushed her and would not be a problem anymore. Wojciech said she was glad Ash had called her, told the two women it was time to go and quietly called Ash the finest she had ever known. She then told the arriving police that monsters had stolen a patrol car, and Ash and Freysa fled.
To The Tyrell Building
Ash disabled the patrol car's transponder and traced Yotun to a tower that the rich had abandoned after his attacks. Her spine was reverting, and she warned Freysa that they had to move before her legs gave out. Inside, they found Kalia dying, her body ravaged like the other followers. She told them that Yotun had gone home. When Ash suggested the ruins of the Tyrell Corporation, Kalia called them fools for thinking he was searching for a miracle cure there, and said that he was Tyrell.
Ash then remembered that Eldon Tyrell had grown up poor in the mountains. The town had been far from anything that mattered, and even that had been too much for the Tyrells. Every schoolchild knew the story of how Tyrell had come out of the wilderness. His family had lived in a cabin miles above the town of Edens, California. Ash and Freysa set out for the mountains to find him.
The Owl's Skull
Yotun shot down their car in the snowy mountains, later saying that he had seen the police markings. He told Ash that the salve that had healed her had worn off and called them two broken bodies. Tyrell had given him just enough of his memories to lead him to this place, where Tyrell had buried something as a child. Yotun believed that whatever lay in the ground was the key to the future.
He dug up a box and found only an owl's skull inside. Yotun said it was not the answer but the question that had led to all of his kind, whether Tyrell could beat death. Ash told him to keep digging his own grave and promised him one last retirement, but Freysa shot him from behind. Ash told Freysa that it had been her job, and the two went home with a story to tell about a miracle.

Behind The Scenes
Mike Johnson wrote all twelve issues, with Andres Guinaldo on art, Marco Lesko on colors, Jim Campbell on lettering and David Leach as editor. Michael Green, co-writer of Blade Runner 2049, was credited as a creative consultant with K. Perkins and Mellow Brown. The first issue went on sale on 16 December 2020, and issues 1 to 4 were collected as Reunion in 2021. Issues 5 to 8 ran from June to September 2021 and were collected as Echoes, and issues 9 to 12 ran from November 2021 to February 2022 as Redemption.
Cover A of the early issues was painted by Peach Momoko, and the series also carried covers by Syd Mead, Rian Hughes, Fernando Dagnino and others. Each issue opened with a recap page that placed the story in its timeline and set up the events of the previous issue. Titan later gathered all three volumes in a single omnibus in October 2025. The last page promised that the story would be concluded in Blade Runner 2039, and the Blade Runner canon guide lists how the comics fit with the films.
Closing Thoughts
Blade Runner 2029 was the second of Titan's Ash series, picking up ten years after the first and placing her on both sides of the war between humans and replicants. It turned a single seawall case into a citywide uprising led by Yotun, a replicant who had found a way to cheat his own lifespan. The series ended with Ash exposed, healed and then broken again, and with the question of whether a replicant could beat death left open on the Blade Runner timeline.
