Aahna "Ash" Ashina was the main character of Titan Comics' Blade Runner 2019, Blade Runner 2029 and Blade Runner 2039, set in the world of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. Raised by her grandmother in Los Angeles and crippled from childhood by a degenerative spinal condition, she wore a cybernetic brace and joined the LAPD blade runner unit. A missing-persons case for Alexander Selwyn turned her against the system she served, and she spent the next twenty years hiding his daughter Cleo, fighting the replicant prophet Yotun, and smuggling fugitives out of the city as the female blade runner they called the Savior of Replicants.

Biography

Childhood In Los Angeles

Ten-year-old Ash watching from behind her grandmother's food truck counter as two LAPD officers leave without paying in Blade Runner 2019 #0

Aahna Ashina was born in Los Angeles on 14 October 1990, the daughter of a Japanese and Indian family that lived close to the street. In 2000, when she was ten, doctors diagnosed a rare degenerative condition of her spine. Her mother left for the Off-World colonies the night after the diagnosis, promising to send money home for treatment, and was never heard from again. Ash was left in the care of her grandmother, whom she called Nani, and spent her days on crutches inside Nani's Indian food truck beside a crowded city park.

The truck ran on a forged permit, and the police knew it. When two officers ordered chicken biryani and Nani asked them to pay, one told her the meal was on the house because the department had chosen not to notice the fake paperwork. A police spinner roared overhead and Ash said she did not like them. Nani answered that liking had nothing to do with it, because there were only those who watched from above and the people who did their bidding when they came down. The lesson stayed with Ash long after she joined the LAPD herself.

Doctor Zhang's Brace

A young Ash with a bright blue pixie cut holding a skull inside Doctor Zhang's cluttered electronics shop in Blade Runner 2019 #0

In 2009, nineteen-year-old Ash walked into the backstreet shop of Doctor Zhang, a cybernetics dealer who collected skulls brought back from Avalon. She had saved for years toward the spinal brace he had built for her. Zhang promised she would walk again, but Ash told him she could already walk and that the brace would simply open the doors she needed opened. When he tried to trade a discount for favors, she paid him with a bag of black-market cybernetics and a set of compromising photographs she had found.

Zhang threatened to have her killed, and Ash replied that she knew the same people he did and that they liked her better. The brace was surgically fixed along her spine and needed regular recharging, and the operation left her deep in debt for years. It let her move, run and fight like anyone else, but it also became the secret she guarded most closely. Anyone who learned of it held power over her, a weakness that the Canaan case and her later enemies would both exploit.

Arrest And Recruitment

A young Ash arrives at a busy LAPD headquarters office in Blade Runner 2029 #7

By 2011 Ash had built a reputation for stealing from the rich and reselling the goods to everyone else, and police brought the twenty-one-year-old into LAPD headquarters under arrest. Detective Lydia Wojciech questioned her and saw something unusual in the suspect across the table. Ash had a brain, Wojciech said, a rarity among the people she interviewed, and she asked whether Ash had ever thought about going after bigger fish. She also noticed the brace on Ash's back and kept the knowledge to herself.

Wojciech admired the young thief's persistence and told her she would make a good detective. She promised to keep an eye on her, and over the next two years she steered Ash away from the street and toward the department. The detective became the closest thing Ash had to a mentor inside the police, and later her captain. Their bond outlasted Ash's flight from Earth, her return, and her break with the force, and Wojciech remained one of the few people Ash trusted with the truth about her spine.

Joining The Blade Runner Unit

Ash aiming her blaster across a desk at an interviewer she has identified as a replicant in Blade Runner 2019 #0

On 22 April 2013, Ash was assigned to the LAPD blade runner unit as a new detective. Her entrance interview turned into her first case when she realized the official questioning her was a replicant and drew her blaster across the desk. She carried out her first retirement that year. For a time she was partnered with Lelas, a brutal officer whose methods convinced her never to work with a partner again, and she spent the rest of her early career hunting alone.

Not every case went her way. In 2017 she tracked the replicant Yotun to the shop of a Mr. Malcolm, a man who claimed he could make replicants disappear. Yotun killed Malcolm, threw the body onto Ash, disarmed her, and told her to report that a replicant had beaten her and shown mercy. In 2018 she cornered the Nexus-6 Mack on a rooftop, read out his model number, and shot him into the street below. She told a group of children they could strip the body for parts, never knowing that he had survived the fall.

The Selwyn Case

Ash lounging in a chair inside the wrecked Sunshine Botanics greenhouse while the wounded replicant Benny slumps on the floor in Blade Runner 2019 #1

In November 2019, Ash ran down the replicant Benny, who had killed five people, inside a wrecked greenhouse. She weighed selling his eyes on the collectors' market, then let him choose his own end, and he removed his eyes before cutting his own throat. Back at headquarters, Wojciech told her there were no more replicant jobs but that Alexander Selwyn of the Canaan Corporation wanted a skilled blade runner to find his missing wife Isobel and daughter Cleo. Ash met him at his Santa Barbara estate and took the case.

The trail led to the viaduct, where she found Isobel's spinner and the murdered chauffeur Arkady, and then to a chop-shop surgeon called The Skin, who noticed her brace. At the Carleton apartments she questioned the aged replicant Bellingham, who attacked her and, before leaping from a window, told her to ask Selwyn why he wanted his daughter dead. Ash kept the accusation from her client. Soon afterward her spinner was shot down over the city and exploded after she crawled clear, and she woke in hospital to find the whole department knew about her spine.

Tyrell's Offer And El Santuario

Selwyn had the case moved to Harry Bryant's division, but the Tyrell Corporation sent for Ash. Its executive Elo told her that Isobel was a Nexus-7 built to replace Selwyn's dead wife, and offered to cure Ash's spine for good if she brought the replicant in. Ash accepted. She tased her old partner Lelas to stop him beating a suspect, learned that fugitive replicants fled to a beach south of the border, and flew to El Santuario in Baja, where the Replicant Underground was hiding Isobel and Cleo.

The Underground showed her correspondence proving that Selwyn meant to hand Cleo to Tyrell as payment for Isobel. When Selwyn arrived with armed Tyrell men, Isobel stayed behind to cover Ash, and Ash escaped in a spinner with the girl. Back in Los Angeles she refused to give Cleo to either the police or Tyrell. She asked the child where else they could go, and Cleo pointed at the sky. Ash gave up the cure, her badge and her city in a single night and took Cleo off-world.

Exile In The Off-World Colonies

Ash hugging Cleo on a snowy landing pad as a spinner lifts off under the stars at Ramanuja in Blade Runner 2019 #8

By 2026 Ash and Cleo were living in the colonies as the mother and son Darja and Ian Kady, and Ash worked on a colony mining operation. When a Nexus-8 uprising wrecked the Heidecker-Vostro mining ship, Cleo vanished with the rebels. The blade runner Hythe, who knew Ash's real name, ran a Voight-Kampff test on her, restored her failing brace, and reinstated her to help track the girl. Their search crossed the market districts of Ramanuja and ended in the Maze, where Hythe retired the rebel leader Pellam.

Hythe's client turned out to be a woman who looked exactly like Isobel. At Ramanuja Station Hythe drew on Ash and revealed that this Isobel was a new replicant built to follow Ash to Cleo. Cleo's companion Padraic tackled Hythe and died for it, and then the new Isobel shot Hythe, explaining that she carried her predecessor's memories of Cleo and of Ash. Ash sent Cleo to the colony of Arcadia with her, telling the girl they could not keep hiding, and returned alone to Earth to make sure Selwyn never came after them again.

Return To Los Angeles

The lion leaping at Ash with its jaws open against a red background in Blade Runner 2019 #12

Still wanted for kidnapping, Ash asked Wojciech for help finding Selwyn, but her old mentor could only tell her to trust her knowledge of the streets. In the ruins of the Tyrell pyramid she found the scientist Fost working on unfinished replicant bodies and talked him into handing over the Isobel project files. Police caught her on the way out, but Freysa Sadeghpour and her replicant resistance ambushed the transport and carried Ash to a farmhouse outside the city, where Freysa began repairing her brace.

When another Hythe attacked the farm, Ash fled with Freysa and the boy Ephraim, and Freysa told her that Selwyn was now making replicants illegally. At his Santa Barbara home Ash fought four Hythe copies and the grown lion Cleo had once kept, killing the animal and two of the replicants before Selwyn shut down her brace by remote. Cleo and the second Isobel arrived, and Isobel broke Selwyn's neck. Over noodles in the rain, Cleo asked Ash to come to Arcadia, but Ash said she belonged on Earth and would stay to help the hunted Nexus-8s.

Rejoining The LAPD

Ash and Freysa embrace inside the cluttered Replicant Underground hideout in Blade Runner 2029 #1

In 2027 Ash rejoined the LAPD blade runner unit. Her superiors believed she was hunting fugitives again, but she was quietly passing replicants to the Replicant Underground and living with Freysa, who had become her partner. A 2021 Free Comic Book Day story showed her answering a call at a sculptor's workshop full of dismembered body parts. The replicant there knew her reputation and begged to be saved, but Ash said she did not rescue killers and that some of his kind burned too bright. When he attacked, she retired him.

On her way out a neighbor, Ms. Setter, asked whether she had dealt with the replicant and said she had never thought they were a good idea. Ash answered only with a maybe. The same issue paired her story with a case from Cal Moreaux, the department's first blade runner, decades earlier. The double life became the pattern of her years back on the force. She closed the cases that kept her badge safe, and whenever a fugitive had harmed no one she made sure the trail went cold before her captain saw it.

Yotun's Revolution

Ash floats inside a rejuvenation tank with a breathing mask in Blade Runner 2029 #5

In 2029 a worker on the Sepulveda Sea Wall fled from Ash and, before jumping to his death, said that Yotun redeems. The name sent her back to the replicant who had beaten her twelve years earlier, and to a string of murders that included the blade runner Ruskin, whose spine had been torn out by hand. The replicant Lelia abducted Ash from her own home, and Yotun's followers showed her the replicants she had once retired, now revived. As mercy for those lives, Yotun sealed her inside one of his rejuvenation tanks.

Silka, Dyson and Farhad broke her out, and Ash woke without pain for the first time in her life. The tank had healed her spine and even her eyesight, and she no longer needed the brace or her glasses. Yotun had taken Freysa, and Ash went alone to LAPD headquarters, which his followers had seized and bombed. Yotun offered her the choice of arresting him or saving Freysa. Ash fired and he fled, and she found Freysa with her right eye cut out and carried her to safety.

The Death Of Yotun

Yotun crouches in the snow beside Ash in a mountain forest in Blade Runner 2029 #12

Six months later Yotun's aging followers were stealing again, and Ash's sergeant Esper threatened to pair her with Brook Marlowe unless she produced leads. A twinge in her spine at a clock tower showed that the cure was fading. After a cultist bomb nearly killed her at a spinner plant, she reported Yotun's location to Esper, who instead took her badge and arrested her for aiding the Underground. Wojciech staged a scene to distract the guards, and Freysa knocked them out and stole a police spinner.

A dying follower named Kalia told them that Yotun had gone home and that he carried the mind of Eldon Tyrell. Ash guessed he meant Tyrell's childhood home in the mountain town of Edens. Their spinner was shot down in the snow, and her failing spine left her at Yotun's mercy as he dug up a box Tyrell had buried as a boy. It held only an owl's bones. Ash drew on Yotun and ordered him to keep digging, and Freysa shot him dead before carrying Ash away.

Savior Of Replicants

Ash stands between the twins Cas and Pol, wired into their chairs beneath giant eye screens, in Blade Runner 2039 #4

By 2039 Ash had left the force and was known among fugitives as the Savior of Replicants, taking transplant eyes as payment for smuggling them to safety. Her disease had spread to her eyes and lungs, and her left eye had been removed. She brought the replicant Lexi to the trailer she shared with Freysa, where she met Freysa's old comrade Sapper Morton, and she learned that the new replicant blade runner Luv was hunting the city's fugitives for Niander Wallace.

Wojciech, now in a nursing home, warned her to stay clear of Wallace. Instead Ash found a grown Cleo back in Los Angeles, searching for the missing Isobel, and the surviving Hythe gave her a disk of Selwyn's research. The twins Cas and Pol read it and found that Selwyn had come close to replicant fertility. When Luv cornered Ash and Cleo at a hotel, Ash bluffed her with a blank disk, then fled by spinner past the Sea Wall and swam to Hermosa Beach, where she shut down the Underground's railroad.

The Road To San Francisco

Highway raiders attack Ash and Cleo on the road in Blade Runner 2039 #5

Freysa wanted the research destroyed, believing nobody should hold that knowledge, while Ash argued that replicants deserved the chance to have children. The argument went unresolved, and Ash drove north with Cleo toward San Francisco, where the original Isobel's family had lived. Raiders attacked their truck on the highway, and Lexi, who had stowed away in the back, helped kill them as Ash stabbed their leader through the neck. Cleo was badly wounded, and a farmer named Mack took them in and operated on her.

Mack then aimed a shotgun at Ash and told her he was the Nexus-6 she had shot off a rooftop in 2018. Ash said she had changed, and he believed her only when Lexi, a replicant, held a gun to his head in her defense. He joined her on the drive into the half-abandoned, earthquake-shaken city. At the Selwyn family house, Luv and a replicant double of Ash were waiting. Mack died covering her escape, and Isobel arrived in a stolen spinner to pull Ash out.

The Deal With Wallace

Ash faces Wallace in the rain among broken ruins in Blade Runner 2039 #12

Isobel explained that Wallace had tracked her to Arcadia and that he would never stop hunting her, and Ash decided he had to be stopped. At Wojciech's nursing home she learned from Gaff that her mentor had died, and he advised her to bring Wallace what he wanted, leaving her an origami frog. Ash captured her double, persuaded the veteran Cal Moreaux to repay an old favor with a contact, and forced Wallace's former nursemaid Daisy to arrange a meeting after her pleasure model Hanii attacked.

Ash sent her double to the meeting in her place, killed one of Wallace's guards, and waited in his spinner. She brought him to the ruined private chamber where Tyrell had died twenty years earlier. Wallace offered to cure her, warning that she would be dead within a year without treatment. Ash refused and traded him Selwyn's research for his promise to leave Isobel and Cleo alone. When he boasted that every replicant would one day answer to him, she told him his obedience protocol would never be perfect and that he could not imagine a world where the life he created was free of his leash.

Final Fate

Ash and Freysa rest on a rooftop ledge above the city as Freysa says she should throw Ash off the roof in Blade Runner 2039 #12

Afterward, Ash found Cleo and Isobel in a crowded street and told Cleo it was done and that they had to get out of the city. She warned that Wallace might still send men after them, and her double promised to protect the pair, admitting she wanted off the planet herself. Cleo hugged Ash and told her it was her turn to visit next time, though Ash knew she would not live to see that day. She said goodbye in the rain, quietly calling Cleo "Rabbit" as they disappeared into the crowd.

Ash then joined Freysa on a rooftop above Los Angeles, her cane propped against the ledge beside her. The only thing she still feared was Freysa's reaction, and Freysa told her she ought to throw her off the roof for letting Wallace walk away. Ash said she had handed him the future and would do it again, because he did not realize what kind of future he was creating. When Freysa asked how long that future would take to arrive, Ash admitted she had no idea. The two held hands, and Ash said she was glad to be waiting with her.

The Other Ash

Rash, the replicant copy of Ash, is revealed in a long coat in Blade Runner 2039 #4

The other Ash was Rash, a replicant copy of Ashina that Niander Wallace unveiled in 2039 and set to work beside Luv. She had Ash's face, build and short black hair, but none of her memories and none of her degenerative disease. Rash retired the surviving Hythe in a Hollywood Hills mansion and waited with Luv at the Selwyn house in San Francisco, where she shot Mack. Curious about the woman she copied, she broke one of Ash's fingers and then calmly broke the same finger on her own hand.

Back in Los Angeles, Rash came looking for Ash at a noodle bar, wanting to learn more about her. Ash led her into a trap, and after a fight with Sapper Morton Lexi tranquilized the double. Under questioning Rash revealed that Wallace believed Isobel was the missing piece of replicant fertility, and she claimed no loyalty to him. She knocked out Luv, impersonated Ash at the Wallace meeting and fought off his security detail, and at the end Ash left her to guard Isobel and Cleo against anyone Wallace might send.

Personality And Traits

Ash walking through a crowded Los Angeles street under paper lanterns and neon signs in Blade Runner 2019 #2

Ash was blunt, proud and fiercely independent, a street kid from Los Angeles who never fully trusted the police she served. Her grandmother's view that the city was run by those who watched from above shaped her contempt for corporations such as Tyrell, and she refused to work with a partner after Lelas. Constant pain from her spine made her stubborn rather than cautious. She hid the brace from almost everyone, carried an artificial-eye trade on the side in her early years, and wore her coat and blaster like armor.

Her view of replicants shifted across two decades. In 2019 she treated retirements as work and considered selling a victim's eyes, but Isobel's sacrifice for Cleo changed her, and by 2039 she was risking her life to smuggle fugitives to freedom. She still drew lines, refusing to save replicants who killed, and she argued that they deserved the right to have children. Freysa noted the irony that the former eye trader now took payment in eyes.

Relationships

Freysa Sadeghpour

Ash and Freysa argue beneath a full moon and a lone tree in Blade Runner 2039 #5

Freysa Sadeghpour rescued Ash from police custody in 2019, rebuilt her brace, and became her partner in work and in life. A former soldier who led the replicant resistance, she lived with Ash through the 2029 and 2039 stories, lost an eye to Yotun, and shot him dead to save Ash. The two fought bitterly over Selwyn's research, which Freysa wanted destroyed, but they reconciled, and Ash chose to spend her remaining time with Freysa rather than accept Wallace's cure.

Cleo And Isobel Selwyn

Ash first knew Cleo Selwyn as the missing child of a case and ended up raising her as her own in the colonies. The girl grew into a wife, mother and schoolteacher on Arcadia, but returned to Earth in 2039 to find Isobel. Ash met two Isobels, the Nexus-7 who died covering her escape from Baja and the later copy who killed Hythe and Selwyn. She protected both mother and daughter to the end, trading Selwyn's research so Wallace would leave them alone.

Lydia Wojciech

Ash and Lydia Wojciech walk the hedged gardens of the nursing home in Blade Runner 2039 #3

Detective and later Captain Lydia Wojciech arrested Ash as a young thief in 2011 and recruited her into the LAPD. She assigned Ash the Selwyn case, tipped off police when Ash returned as a fugitive, yet helped Freysa free her after her arrest in 2029. In retirement she warned Ash away from Wallace. Ash learned of Wojciech's death from Gaff, a friend of the old captain, when she returned to the nursing home for advice.

Gaff And Cal Moreaux

Cal and Ash look out over the night city from a penthouse in Blade Runner 2039 #10

In 2039 the retired Gaff, a friend of Wojciech from his own years on the force, told Ash that Wojciech had died at peace and advised her to bring Wallace what he wanted, handing her an origami frog. Cal Moreaux, the department's first blade runner and the hero of Blade Runner Origins, owed Ash a favor. She found him at a club, and in his private building he gave her the name of one of Wallace's most dangerous contacts, Daisy. Moreaux warned her that the woman was more lethal than she looked, and the warning proved true when Daisy turned her pleasure model on Ash and Rash.

Hythe

Ash standing upright in a borrowed trench coat before a window full of stars after Hythe restored her spinal brace in Blade Runner 2019 #6

The off-world blade runner Hythe restored Ash's brace in 2026 and lent her a coat, only to betray her at Ramanuja Station. Selwyn later sent several identical Hythe replicants after Ash. One of them spared her in Santa Barbara in exchange for the house and her silence, and that surviving Hythe gave Ash Selwyn's research in 2039 before Rash retired her. Ash never fully trusted any of the copies, but the last Hythe proved to be one of the few allies who kept her word, and she died in a Hollywood Hills mansion after handing Ash the means to bargain with Wallace.

Behind The Scenes

Ash was created for Titan Comics by writers Michael Green, co-writer of the Blade Runner 2049 screenplay, and Mike Johnson, with artist Andrés Guinaldo designing her and drawing all three series. Marco Lesko handled colors, and Blade Runner 2019 began in July 2019 as the first comic set in the film's world. Johnson wrote Blade Runner 2029 and co-wrote Blade Runner 2039 with Mellow Brown, carrying Ash across twenty years of her life and into the era of Luv and Niander Wallace. He described her at a convention panel as half Japanese and half Indian.

Her covers drew a long list of artists, including Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, Peach Momoko and Junggeun Yoon, and cosplayer Rei Kennex portrayed her on live-action photo covers for Blade Runner 2029. A Free Comic Book Day issue numbered #0 in 2019 told her childhood and recruitment, and a second special in 2021 paired her with Cal Moreaux of Blade Runner Origins. Ash also appeared in the Replicant Rebellion expansion of Free League's Blade Runner: The Roleplaying Game, which brought her story into tabletop play.
