Cal Moreaux was the main character of Titan Comics' Blade Runner Origins, set in the world of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. A former soldier from the Los Angeles slums who worked cold cases for the LAPD, he investigated the apparent suicide of Tyrell bioengineer Lydia Kine in 2009 and uncovered an escaped Nexus-5 that held his sister's mind. He allied with the replicant Asa, fought Ilora Stahl's militia through Sector 6-B, and retired his sister Nia on a live Tyrell broadcast as she had asked. Two months later he became the city's first blade runner, and decades afterward he still traded underworld favors when Aahna "Ash" Ashina came calling.

Biography

Childhood In The Slums

Young Cal Moreaux swinging a metal-lined jacket in a fight in the Los Angeles slums in Blade Runner Origins

Cal Moreaux grew up in the Los Angeles slums with his sister Nia and their friend Desiree. He fought often to keep the two of them safe, and he lost enough of those fights that he lined the inside of his jacket with metal plates so the coat could stop a blow and swing back as a weapon. The neighborhood taught him that badges and company men rarely arrived to help, and that loyalty among the people who shared the same streets mattered more than any official rule. Those early years left him protective, stubborn, and already used to carrying other people's danger as if it were his own.

Nia later became a teacher, and Desiree stayed in Sector 6-B as an adult who still remembered every favor and every slight. Cal left the slums for the army and then for the LAPD, but the contacts and debts of childhood never fully left him. When the Nexus-5 case dragged him back into those alleys, the same faces who had once tested him as a boy decided whether he still belonged among them. The metal in his coat was long gone by then, yet the habit of taking a hit for someone else remained.

The Siege Of Kalanthia

Soldiers Cal Moreaux and Avery holding a hangar corridor during the siege of Kalanthia in Blade Runner Origins

In 2007, during the siege of Kalanthia, soldier Cal Moreaux and fellow soldier Avery held a hexagonal hangar corridor while green-armored troops traded fire across crates and fallen bodies. The Tyrell Corporation had left their unit a sealed box marked for use if all else failed, and Avery stayed with it while Cal cleared the south hall. Cal asked Avery to thank Tyrell for the gift, then pushed ahead into smoke and muzzle flash. When he turned back into the room he found every other soldier dead among the wreckage, cut down in the minutes he had spent clearing that hall.

Only a pair of strangers remained standing among the bodies, and one of them told Cal he was welcome as if the slaughter had been a gift. Those survivors later proved to be early replicants delivered as a last-resort weapon from Tyrell's sealed box. The memory stayed with Cal long after he left the war for Los Angeles, and it colored every later claim that Tyrell built tools for human safety alone. He remained at Kalanthia into 2008 before returning to civilian life and the badge.

Cold Cases And Nia

Cal Moreaux visiting his sister Nia at her hospital bedside in Los Angeles in Blade Runner Origins

By 2009 Cal worked for the LAPD as a detective who specialized in cold cases. Between shifts he kept a chair at the hospital bedside of his sister Nia, who remained alive under a brown blanket yet gave no response to voice or touch. Friends still hoped she would come around, and he treated those visits as a duty rather than a hope he could afford to name out loud. The empty hours beside her framed the rest of his work, because every file on his desk felt smaller than the sister who no longer answered him.

At the precinct Sergeant Peter Gutman handed him cases the department wanted finished quietly, and Tyrell money already shaped which deaths received a full investigation. Cal took the work without liking the politics around it, and he kept enough independence to dig when a file smelled wrong. That stubborn streak made him useful to captains who needed someone to close difficult rooms, and dangerous to executives who preferred their crime scenes already written. It also made him the detective Gutman chose when Tyrell reported that bioengineer Lydia Kine had hanged herself inside the tower.

The Lydia Kine Case

Cal Moreaux and Effie Koropey at the Tyrell Corporation laboratory crime scene in Blade Runner Origins

Cal was the first non-employee the guards admitted to the lab floor after Lydia's body was found. Junior bioengineer Effie Koropey had discovered the hanging and stayed with the corpse through the morning rather than leave her alone. She tried to answer Cal's questions about night access and what Lydia had been building before company handlers cut her off. Ilora Stahl, hand-picked by Eldon Tyrell to speak for the firm, interrupted them, claimed anything useful had already gone to the LAPD, and suggested Cal's skills would serve Tyrell better than the city.

Cal took the warning to La Plume Sauvage, the bird-themed club run by his friend Divina, who told him to stay clear of Tyrell for Nia's sake. Outside his apartment Lydia's brother Marcus Kine insisted the death was murder, and Cal shoved him clear of a crate someone tried to drop on them in the rain. Effie later met him at Nemo's Diner and admitted a Nexus-5 prototype had escaped the night Lydia died, a unit her team had been forced to keep upgrading. At the morgue Cal refused Gutman's quick suicide ruling when the injuries failed to match a hanging, and Tyrell took Marcus before he could stop them.

Alliance With Asa

At Lydia's empty apartment Cal lit a flame that tripped the sprinklers and exposed cloaked ambushers waiting in the dark, then fought clear before Asa arrived. That rescuer carried Lydia Kine's transferred mind, tore Stahl's spinner from the air to free Marcus, and led Cal on a chase across rooftops into a museum. Effie abandoned a cab to stop Cal from killing the wrong target, yet Stahl found them there and shot Effie rather than let her finish what she knew. Stahl then gave Cal one week to eliminate the Nexus-5 and find Marcus.

Over Effie's body Cal confirmed that Asa carried Lydia's mind but was not the escaped prototype, and the two agreed to work together against Stahl's hunt. They sheltered Marcus with Divina at La Plume Sauvage while Cal filed a false report that accepted the suicide ruling and bought time off the books. He left the force rather than keep covering for Tyrell's grip on the department, because the badge could no longer protect the people Stahl was prepared to burn. Together he and Asa stopped the awakened Nexus-4 servant Arnault after contact with the prototype broke the domestic model into a violent loop of asking why.

Discovering Nia Was A Replicant

Cal's search led him into Sector 6-B and the bar All Caps, where childhood friend Desiree and local enforcer Carlisle locked him in and beat him as a message meant for Tyrell. Carlisle left him his childhood coat, and Cal used the metal-lined jacket to drop the men holding him before he convinced Desiree he was hunting the company's lie rather than serving it. She led him to the people sheltering the escaped prototype, and the face waiting for him was his sister's. The Nexus-5 was Nia Moreaux, living in a new body after Lydia transferred her mind following the Kindred Elementary bombing.

Nia told him Tyrell would never stop hunting awakened units, and she asked whether he would stand with the slums or with Stahl's deadline. Cal argued that killing Stahl would make every replicant a target, while Nia asked him to tear the system apart from inside if her plan failed, even if that meant becoming a blade runner. In the same streets a deranged awakened Nexus-4 named Filip tried to take Cal's eyes until the detective smashed him with a pipe and Asa finished the kill. The reveal turned the case into a family crisis and street war, with Isaac and Desiree fighting beside her while Cal held Stahl's clock.

Retiring Nia On The Tyrell Broadcast

Stahl answered the awakenings with militia rather than paperwork and ordered her forces to destroy the entire sector. Nia, Cal, Asa, Desiree, Marcus, and the awakened fought through smoke while stalls and housing went up around them. Nia sent her partner Isaac with Cal to reach Stahl, and Isaac was shot dead in the cover fire as Stahl's spinner fled the burn. A year earlier Nia had been a fifth-grade teacher ordered to train Nexus-4 units at Kindred Elementary, and after a bombing at the school Stahl had intercepted her ambulance so Lydia could transfer her mind into the Nexus-5 chassis.

With Isaac gone, Nia chose a Latin vow and took Desiree to Tyrell headquarters for an assault on Stahl's live broadcast. Desiree crashed their spinner through the glass while Nia fought upward to the studio, and Cal forced his own way into the same building. Earlier Nia had asked him privately to chase her into that room and kill her on air so the world would see a Black woman's face rather than a blank chassis. He did what she asked and shot her through the heart on live television, ending the uprising she had started while Tyrell moved quickly to rewrite what the audience had just watched.

Founding The LAPD Blade Runner Unit

In his candlelit office Eldon Tyrell told Stahl the awakening had exposed a real problem in his replicants and ordered an external measure of control for the day future models went rogue. Two months later the LAPD established a Blade Runner Unit with Cal as its inaugural member, a force Gaff would later serve, while citizens murdered replicants in the streets and the media blamed Lydia and Effie. Stahl promised safer future models beside the new unit and kept rogue calls routed through Tyrell before the police ever saw them. Cal accepted the badge that answered to her through back channels and vowed he would still come after her.

He later met Asa on a rainy overlook, warned him that the refugee trail out of the city was too visible, and asked him to use Effie's research to build a Voight-Kampff machine that could test blade runner candidates for empathy. Cal hoped future hunters would break when empathy took over rather than become Stahl's perfect tools, and he cautioned Asa that if they met again he would have to shoot him. The unit that began with his badge would still hunt under Stahl's quiet veto, yet he had already decided how long he would wear the coat she handed him.

Helping Ash In The Underworld

In 2039, decades after he founded the unit, former blade runner Aahna "Ash" Ashina found him at a club, lounging in a red armchair with a drink. She needed a way to reach Niander Wallace, and Moreaux still had ties to companies that did business with the Wallace Corporation. At a private building he owned he agreed to repay an old favor despite the risk, gave her the name of Wallace supplier Daisy, and warned that the woman was more lethal than she looked. The warning proved true when Daisy set her pleasure model on Ash and Rash, and Cal's underworld map still opened doors the badge could not.

Final Fate

Cal became the first blade runner to leave the occupation and spent later years as a prominent figure in the Los Angeles underworld, using those contacts to protect people the badge no longer covered. By the time Ash found him he still owned quiet rooms and owed old favors, yet he no longer wore Stahl's coat or answered Tyrell's calls. The hunter who founded the unit ended as a broker on its margins, alive in the city he had once policed and still choosing who got through the door.

Personality And Traits

Cal carried the habits of a slum protector into every badge he later wore. He preferred hard proof over company statements, stayed with cold cases other detectives avoided, and kept visiting Nia long after hope had stopped being a useful word. Violence never surprised him, yet he still flinched when the people he loved asked him to become the weapon that ended them. He lined his childhood coat with metal to even unfair fights, and as an adult he kept evening the odds by walking into rooms Tyrell expected him to leave alone.

Empathy complicated the hunter he became. He filed false reports to buy time for people the law no longer covered, asked Asa for a test that would weed out blade runners without feeling, and accepted Stahl's unit only after promising himself he would tear it down from inside. Friends at La Plume Sauvage knew him as a man who drank under neon bird masks and still left with unfinished business in his pockets. The underworld years that followed the badge suited a detective who had already learned that official channels belonged to the corporations first.

Relationships

Nia Moreaux

Nia was Cal's sister, a teacher whose mind Tyrell transferred into the Nexus-5 after the Kindred Elementary bombing. He spent months at her hospital bedside without knowing the body on the bed was already empty of the mind Stahl had claimed. When Desiree brought him to the awakened, he found the sister he had mourned leading a revolt instead of lying silent. Her last request asked him to kill her on Stahl's broadcast so the city would see a human face, and he honored that request even though it made him the first blade runner in everything but name.

Asa

Asa carried Lydia Kine's consciousness after she faked her suicide and became Cal's most important ally against Stahl. Cal chased him as a murder suspect before Effie's death forced them into partnership over her body in the rain. Together they sheltered Marcus, stopped Arnault, and fought through Sector 6-B while Stahl's week closed in fire. At the end Cal warned Asa that the refugee trail was too visible and asked him to build the Voight-Kampff machine that would one day measure the empathy Cal still hoped blade runners might keep.

Desiree And Divina

Desiree grew up with Cal and Nia in the slums and later tested whether the detective still belonged to Tyrell before she led him to the Nexus-5. She fought beside Nia during the assault on the broadcast, then left Los Angeles after Cal retired her friend on air. Divina ran La Plume Sauvage, warned Cal away from Tyrell's offer, and turned her club into a shelter for Marcus and later for awakened replicants. Both women kept Cal tied to a city that corporations tried to rewrite from above, and both paid for that loyalty when Stahl's militia came through the neon.

Ilora Stahl

Ilora Stahl was the Tyrell executive who met Cal at Lydia's crime scene, shot Effie, burned Sector 6-B, and kept the new blade runner unit under company influence. She gave him a week to deliver a corpse and used that week as cover for a purge. Cal accepted the inaugural blade runner badge that reported to her through back channels and still promised he would come after her. Their conflict defined the birth of the unit: she wanted an external leash on rogue replicants, and he took the leash while planning to turn it against the hand that held it.

Ash Ashina

Decades later in Blade Runner 2039, the retired first blade runner owed a favor to Ash Ashina. She found him at a club, and in his private building he gave her the name of Wallace contact Daisy, warning that the woman was more lethal than she looked. The warning proved true when Daisy turned her pleasure model on Ash and her replicant double. A Free Comic Book Day special in 2021 had already paired a case from Cal's era with Ash's double life on the force, binding the first blade runner to the runner later called the Savior of Replicants.

Behind The Scenes

Cal Moreaux was created for Titan Comics by writers K. Perkins, Mellow Brown, and Mike Johnson, with artist Fernando Dagnino drawing the twelve-issue run. Marco Lesko handled colors, Jim Campbell lettered the book, and David Leach edited it, with Michael Green credited as creative consultant. Blade Runner Origins launched on 10 March 2021 and concluded on 8 June 2022 with Alcon Publishing, collected later in the volumes Products, Scrap, and Burning. A Free Comic Book Day special shared with Blade Runner 2029 on 14 August 2021 placed Cal beside Ash Ashina across decades of the same continuity.

Covers for the series included work by Artgerm, Angel Hernandez, Peach Momoko, Veronica Fish, and others, with Cal often shown in the tan trench coat that marked him as the prequel's detective lead. He returned in Titan's Blade Runner 2039 as an underworld power broker who still remembered old favors. In June 2024 editor David Leach said a second Origins series titled Cascade Year 2 was planned, though no release date followed that announcement. On the shared timeline Cal's story falls in 2009, ten years before Deckard's Nexus-6 case and well before the Ashina books that inherited the unit he founded.

The idea of a first blade runner also appears outside Titan's continuity in BOOM! Studios' Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?: Dust to Dust (2010), written by Chris Roberson and drawn by Robert Adler. That prequel to Philip K. Dick's novel follows the android Charlie Victor, paired with the empathic Malcolm Reed, as they hunted rogue androids for the San Francisco police after World War Terminus. Victor's work fills a similar role to Cal's later badge, a city hunter built in the wreckage of war rather than under Tyrell's Los Angeles tower.
