Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus: Titan Comic Series Overview
Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus is a Titan Comics series set in Tokyo in 2015, four years before the original Blade Runner film. It followed the private investigator Mead and her replicant partner Stix, deserters from an off-world war, as a yakuza feud and a stolen military program caught up with them. The first eight issues ran as two four-issue arcs, Die In Peace by Kianna Shore from 31 July to 23 October 2024 and To Lose Is To Win by Nancy A. Collins from 6 May to 5 August 2026, both drawn by Mariano Taibo. A third arc, Die With Honor, is coming next and launched on 4 November 2026.
The Story
Die In Peace
Mead Works The Forgotten Districts
In Tokyo in 2015, the private investigator Mead took a job in a district of the wasureru, the forgotten, where four thugs ran a protection racket on the weak. She took them on alone, and a bald thug cut her leg with a cleaver before she wondered how the gang had come by a Kumigumi gun. Her partner Stix arrived late and finished the thugs with thrown daggers. At an izakaya Mead joked that her life was worth less than a dozen takoyaki. There a young woman named Sayo asked her to find her sister Miyuki, missing for a week after a job in Shinjuku.
Stix Brings Supplies To The Undercity
Stix refused to touch a yakuza case and left the office, so Mead took the job herself. He crossed the city and dropped into the Undercity, home to the people displaced by the Great Pacifica Quakes. There his friend Kaito brought in supply boxes by submarine, and the two handed out food and baby milk to the refugees. Meanwhile Mead and Sayo visited Miyuki's luxury home and learned that the family ran a finance and real estate business that was really a yakuza clan. Miyuki had been engaged to her girlfriend, and members of affiliated branches had been dying, with rumors pointing to a replicant.
Mead Finds The Higashi-gumi Slaughtered
At his hideout Stix was visited by the informant Yagi, whom he blamed for the deaths of old friends. Yagi told him of a new military prototype replicant built by Cheshire, a group of rogue former Tyrell Corporation scientists who were taking refugee replicants for parts. Mead questioned Miyuki's fiancee Alura, a programmer, who said two people carrying Tyrell identification had hired Miyuki. Mead then went to the temple of the Higashi-gumi, whose boss owed her favors, and found every member slaughtered. The wounds were precise and efficient, every kill calculated, and Mead could only think that it could not be what she feared.
Rumiko Arrives At The TMPD
The blade runner Rumiko, born in Los Angeles and in Japan for the first time, landed at Narita Airport and reported to the T.M.P.D. The police chief told her a rogue and violent replicant was loose and pointed her to the investigator Mead. Across town Stix watched a replicant friend, who bought flowers to celebrate being alive, get snatched by a masked and tattooed gang. He chased their truck, leapt onto it and was thrown off in the crash. At the office Mead told Sayo the killer was not rogue at all, because the attacks were too targeted.
Mead Explains Stix's Trademark Kill
Rumiko arrived at the office on behalf of Tyrell and showed Mead a photo of Stix, whom she took for the rogue replicant. Mead called it impossible, and in the car she explained that she and Stix had been soldiers together. His trademark kill was a single stab from the spine through the heart, painless and precise, made while thinking of the victim. Then word came that Miyuki had been found dead, and Sayo identified her sister's body at the morgue. Smoking outside, Rumiko told Mead that replicants could only be trusted once, when they were dead.
Sayo Dies In Miyuki's Office
Stix tracked down the gang, learned they had already gotten rid of his friend and tore one thug's jaw away in his rage. At Miyuki's office Mead, Sayo and Rumiko found a Cheshire card, proof that Miyuki had done business with the group. A bolt then came through the window and struck Sayo, who blamed Mead's replicant with her last words before she died in Mead's arms. Mead glimpsed a figure leaping away across the rooftops. When Stix arrived and asked whether she had seen anything, Mead told him she had seen no one.
Rumiko Reports To Tyrell
Mead pulled the bolt from Sayo and saw a stealthy, accurate weapon that was not how Stix killed, then called the police. In a Cheshire laboratory at an unknown location, scientists fitted needles to the eye of a figure labeled Test Subject 23. Rumiko lost a game at an arcade and called Tyrell from a red payphone. She reported that Cheshire held the missing Tyrell scientists and was building new replicants. Her orders were to rescue or neutralize the Tyrell scientists and to kill the Cheshire ones, since an attack on Tyrell was an act of war.
Stix Flees The Karaoke Bar
Rumiko visited Mead at home and revealed she knew that Mead and Stix had gone AWOL from a military suicide mission. She warned that Stix was a combat model who would burn out fast, but Mead answered that he chose to burn bright. At a karaoke bar Stix said someone was after him and asked for help saving a kidnapped replicant in Yokohama. When Mead told him a blade runner suspected him and mentioned reports of mental deterioration in some models, he fled across the rooftops. They fought, and he kicked loose scaffolding that brought a building down on her.
The Ambush At Square World
Mead and Rumiko rode a train to Square World, an abandoned amusement park, unaware that Alura had followed them from Ikebukuro. In a warehouse they found a mutilated body, and Mead broke down as she imagined a bloody Stix. A gang ambushed them, and Mead went berserk while Rumiko shot one attacker. Stix appeared on the roller coaster above, and Rumiko shouted that she was no longer there for him. A bald attacker smashed her into a wall, and Stix, wary of everyone, said they all came for him and Mead eventually.
Alura Kills Takumi
Stix turned on Rumiko, while the bald replicant, the Cheshire killer, beat Mead and called her a base model. Mead drove a blade into his head. Takumi, the yakuza brother of Miyuki and Sayo, then applauded and mourned millions of yen in destroyed technology. Alura shot him in the head and took over his gang, demanding that anyone who opposed the new order speak. She said she knew what Mead and Stix were running from and wanted it, and she offered Stix an extended life. Stix agreed to talk with her, and Mead was given an hour.
Rumiko Remembers Her Mercy
Rumiko woke in the rubble and remembered finding two replicants who had left Tyrell for a short, free life. She had been ordered to retire them, but they refused to fight, and one said he was not afraid of death. On the waterfront Mead and Stix spoke of their guilt over the Aurora Program and their promise to their squad. Then Alura told Stix that Tyrell engineers believed his model was changing into something new. She offered to fix him as her newest recruit, while her soldiers won a gang battle outside.
Mead Sends Rumiko After Aurora
Mead found Rumiko and explained that their last assignment had been a suicide mission, so the whole squad went AWOL. They stole the war data recorded from Mead and Stix, which could have built a reproducible killing machine, the Aurora Program. The squad switched it out while smuggling it to Japan and hid it north in the Demilitarized Area. Mead admitted leaking that to Alura, and the two women drew on each other. Mead then told Rumiko to find Aurora, destroy it and be a good blade runner, and never to let Mead see her again.
To Lose Is To Win
The Aurora Team Takes A Tank
Years earlier on the war world of Kalanthia, Warrant Officer Mead and Stix made up the whole Aurora Team at a Yutani forward command bunker. Yuyona attack craft and a swarm of Suzumebachi drove the defenders out through a back door into the jungle. After twenty combat units were lost holding a clearing, a Jigokukame tank, a hell turtle, rolled up with an O-Yoroi patrol. Sergeant Major Lancaster told Mead he cared nothing for the replicants and that the humans came first. Linked to Stix through visual sync, Mead guided him as he seized the tank.
Lancaster Falls On Kalanthia
Stix stabbed the tank crew and used its guns to cut down the O-Yoroi patrol, and Mead praised his work. Then a sniper blew apart Lancaster's head, and the radio filled with mayday calls. A masked enemy warrior appeared from the jungle with a bloody curved blade and Lancaster's head in hand, and someone shouted that the enemy had found the tunnel. Mead ordered Stix to unplug, telling him he was more valuable to Tyrell than she was. An explosion followed, and Mead was left with blood on her hands.
Madame Nomura Hires Mead
Mead woke from the nightmare in her Tokyo apartment to a note from Stix saying he had gone to work. At the Tsukamoto Building in Chiyoda, Alura had him oversee the move of a replicant lab run by Accerly and Uso. Rumiko followed a note Mead had slipped her, Saitama Prefecture, Omiya, Benkei, and bought a ticket north toward the forbidden zone. Back home Mead found her office door broken and kicked it in with her gun drawn. Inside waited Madame Nomura, mother of Takumi, Miyuki and Sayo, who wanted Alura's head.
Dr. Uso Explains Cheshire's Work
Madame Nomura said Alura had killed Takumi to avenge Miyuki, and that Takumi had bought the assassin but never ordered his sisters' deaths. Mead refused to kill Alura but agreed to investigate and took Miyuki's autopsy report. At a Cheshire facility behind a Schismatrix sign, Dr. Uso told Stix that he and Accerly had been lured away from Tyrell with promises of wealth. They had been smuggled into Japan to fix the short lifespan of Cheshire's knockoffs, which lasted only months. Their method was transplanting hearts from original Tyrell replicants.
Rumiko Travels To Omiya
Uso added that a Tyrell blade runner had found them in their old lab and walked away, sparing them. On the train north Rumiko dreamed of her grandparents and recalled how earthquakes, tsunamis and the Fukushima meltdown had emptied the land beyond Tokyo. She stepped off into the snow of Omiya, where the trains still ran only for the Hikawa Shrine. At a bar she asked about Benkei and was thrown out. A toothless local then sold her the truth, that Benkei was a ronin who guarded the town from a neighboring warlord.
Alura Reports To Uldren
In a flashback to base camp on Kalanthia, Suzumebachi struck the Aurora squad and killed Nuri as Munro grieved and Archer fired back. Mead woke at her desk and told Stix she had a new client. In the Cheshire tower, Alura reported to Mr. Uldren that the lab had moved and the lifespan problem was solved. Uldren revealed he had sold Takumi the assassin model and wanted the blade runner dead. He noted that Rumiko would already be dead if Sayo had not stepped into the arrow.
Benkei Confronts Rumiko
On the torchlit road to the Hikawa Shrine, Benkei met Rumiko in red samurai armor and demanded to know who had sent her. She named Mead and admitted she was contracted to Tyrell, which only made him more hostile. In Tokyo, Mead reread the autopsy and saw that Miyuki's wounds had been made after death. Miyuki had died of tetrodotoxin, the fugu poison, after a last meal of dorayaki and tea. The tea was Da Hong Pao, worth 110 million yen a kilogram, and Mead felt there was more to the case.
Mead And Stix Flee Kalanthia
In a flashback to the Aurora Team barracks on Kalanthia, Mead found Gonzales, Munro and the rest of her squad dead at a table. A false alert followed, and she and Stix fled to the motor pool, realizing the traitor had tampered with the system to cover his escape. They raced across the desert in a buggy past Tyrell guards to the Kalanthia Transport Depot. There a space trucker named Benny, passed over for Aurora, smuggled them in a crate bound for Los Angeles. On landing in Japan Mead gave him the Aurora device to keep from Tyrell.
Rumiko Defeats Benkei
Benkei believed Rumiko had killed Mead and attacked, slicing her hand before she fought back with a blade of her own. She defeated him but spared him, saying blade runners killed replicants and not humans, and told him to ask Stix. Benkei, who respected Stix's right to life, handed over the device and walked her to the station. He explained he had trained with Mead before Tyrell chose her for Aurora and had gone AWOL after helping her escape. When yakuza thugs shadowed them he killed them, and Rumiko left with the earpiece called the Aurora Yoke.
Alura Holds A Memorial For Miyuki
Mead and Stix were searched before entering a memorial at Alura's new headquarters. Alura praised Miyuki as her former second in command, blamed Takumi and renamed the clan the Miyuki-gumi. Mead noticed a 200-year-old tea set, Miyuki's engagement gift, with twenty grams of Da Hong Pao that Alura claimed to be saving for their wedding. Alura told Stix that Madame Nomura was fighting for control and ordered him to get rid of her. If he wanted his extra life, she warned, he would do as she said.
Stix Takes Rumiko To The Undercity
Rumiko met Stix on a neon street and showed him what Benny had given her, since Mead had sent her to retrieve it. With Cheshire and Alura's soldiers hunting her, Stix took her down to the Undercity. There Kaito agreed to carry her by mini-sub to Guam or Hawaii for a Tyrell card worth 100 million yen. Meanwhile Mead called Madame Nomura from a payphone, convinced that Alura had poisoned Miyuki. In a flashback, Mead had been fitted with the Aurora Yoke, which linked her to her new partner STX-009.
Stix Fights His Way To Mead
In the flashback, Tyrell ordered the Aurora Program shut down and its replicants retired, though a scientist secretly sent dummy yokes to Earth. Mead confronted the program director, Casimir, who called Stix, Archer and Cox mere hardware. He shot her in the gut as alarms sounded, and Stix sensed it through their link and fought his way through Tyrell soldiers with his knives. Casimir revealed a new employer, Cheshire, and a bomb. In the present, Stix told Alura he had gotten rid of the blade runner and handed her the yoke, and her eyes glowed.

Closing Thoughts
Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus moved the franchise to Tokyo and built its first two arcs around a human and a replicant bound together by war and by the Aurora Yoke. Die In Peace framed a yakuza murder case around suspicion of Stix, and To Lose Is To Win opened up the Kalanthia past that Mead had tried to bury. The second arc closed with Stix handing the yoke to Alura, leaving the next arc to settle whose side he was really on.
