Blade Runner 2048: Nowhere To Run, Sapper Morton's Fall
Blade Runner 2048: Nowhere to Run was a live-action short film directed by Luke Scott and released in September 2017. It was the last of three prequel shorts made for Blade Runner 2049, after the anime Blade Runner Black Out 2022 and 2036: Nexus Dawn. Set in Los Angeles in 2048, it followed Sapper Morton, played by Dave Bautista, a replicant living quietly as a protein farmer. When he defended a girl and her mother from a gang of thugs in a street market, his strength gave him away, and a stranger reported him to the police.
Plot
The Street Market
The film opened with a montage that included the text "Nexus 08 Prototype Alpha 01" and a voice checking an old serial number from before the Blackout, which would be hard to trace. A caption then placed the story in Los Angeles in 2048. Sapper Morton washed his face in a green-lit bathroom, looking pained, and put on a pair of small wire glasses. He walked out into a crowded neon street market, where a group of thugs mocked him as he brushed past. Sapper ignored them and moved on through the crowd.
Meeting Ella
In the market, Sapper met Ella, a young girl he knew, while her mother waved to him from nearby. He gave Ella a worn copy of The Power and the Glory, a book he had enjoyed. He told her that it was about an outlaw priest who was trying to understand the meaning of being human. The gift said a lot about Sapper himself, a replicant hiding among humans and thinking about the same question. It was a small, warm moment in a hard place, and it showed why the girl and her mother trusted him.
The Deal With Salt
Sapper went on to sell his protein to a dealer named Salt, who tested a sample under a lamp. The two haggled over the price, and Sapper complained that the offer barely covered his nematodes. He asked for 4,000, but Salt paid him only 3,000, and Sapper took the money without a fight. Nearby, a man with a reflective visor over the lower half of his face watched him closely. Sapper then bought some food and headed back through the market, unaware that the watcher was still following him and that his quiet life in Los Angeles was about to end.
The Fight
On his way back, Sapper saw the thugs attacking Ella and her mother. He dropped his food and took on about five of them, showing far more than human strength, and threw one man through a market stall. Afterward, none of the thugs moved. The crowd watched in shocked silence, and Ella and her mother cowered from him in fear. Sapper grabbed his dropped cash and fled, leaving behind a paper with his address on it. The masked watcher picked it up and called from a payphone in the rain, saying, "I think I found the rogue skin job you might be looking for... I got the address."
Characters
- Sapper Morton (Dave Bautista) was a replicant who lived quietly in Los Angeles, sold protein and loved books. He gave Ella a novel about what it meant to be human. When the thugs attacked her and her mother, he fought them with superhuman strength and then fled.
- Ella (Gaia Ottman) was a young girl Sapper befriended at the market, and he gave her The Power and the Glory. After seeing him fight, she cowered from him in fear.
- Ella's mother (Orion Ben) waved to Sapper from nearby when he met Ella. She and her daughter were attacked by the thugs before Sapper stepped in.
- Salt (Gerard Miller) was the dealer who bought Sapper's protein. He tested a sample under a lamp and paid 3,000 instead of the 4,000 that Sapper asked for.
- The spectator (Björn Freiberg) was the man with the reflective visor who watched Sapper at the market. He picked up the paper with Sapper's address and reported him by payphone.
Connection To Blade Runner 2049
Nowhere to Run was set one year before Blade Runner 2049, and it explained how the police found Sapper Morton. At the start of the feature, the blade runner K tracked Sapper to his protein farm outside Los Angeles and retired him there. The short showed the fight and the phone call that put him on the police's list. It also connected to the earlier shorts, since Sapper was one of the older replicants who survived after the Blackout and the ban. Together with Black Out 2022 and 2036: Nexus Dawn, it filled in the Blade Runner timeline before 2049.
Behind The Scenes
Luke Scott, the son of Ridley Scott, directed the short, which was written by Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, the writers of Blade Runner 2049. It was released on 16 September 2017, about three weeks before the feature, and ran about six minutes. Dave Bautista returned as Sapper Morton, with Gerard Miller as Salt, Gaia Ottman as Ella, Orion Ben as her mother and Björn Freiberg as the spectator. Adam Savage made a brief cameo as a shop patron. The studios behind it included Alcon Entertainment, Columbia Pictures and Scott Free Productions.
Conclusion
Blade Runner 2048: Nowhere to Run was a small, character-focused story about a replicant trying to live a decent life, until it erupted into violence. In about six minutes, it showed Sapper Morton as a gentle man who read books and helped a child, then as a killer when the people he cared about were in danger. His act of kindness was what exposed him, and the girl he saved ended up afraid of him. The short gave Sapper's brief scene at the start of Blade Runner 2049 much more weight, since viewers knew how he was found.
