Blade Runner Short Films: Black Out, Nexus Dawn & More
Before Blade Runner 2049 opened in October 2017, Denis Villeneuve chose three filmmakers to make short films about the thirty years between the two features. Shinichiro Watanabe's anime Blade Runner Black Out 2022 showed the Nexus-8 replicants who wiped the replicant records with an EMP blast over Los Angeles. Luke Scott directed the other two, starting with 2036: Nexus Dawn, in which Niander Wallace asked lawmakers to lift the replicant ban. The last, 2048: Nowhere to Run, followed Sapper Morton a year before the film began. All three were released online, and their events fit into the Blade Runner timeline.
2036: Nexus Dawn was a 2017 short film directed by Luke Scott and one of three prequels to Blade Runner 2049. In Los Angeles in 2036, Niander Wallace asked lawmakers to repeal the replicant ban and proved his Nexus-9 would obey by ordering it to cut its own throat.
