Alien: Inferno's Fall: Novel Plot, Characters & Lore

Alien: Inferno's Fall is a 2022 novel by Philippa Ballantine, published by Titan Books, from a story with Clara Carija. It followed miner Toru McClintock-Riley and her family company, the Knot, on the Union of Progressive Peoples Eitr world Shānmén in 2186, after an Engineer Juggernaut dumped Black Goo on the colony. Colonel Zula Hendricks sent the Jackals from the warship Righteous Fury to pull survivors out of Svarog Mine. Toru was killed during the evacuation, and Lena, Bai Yun, and the synthetic Carter reached the family station at Pylos.

Plot Summary

The Knot had been on Shānmén only a couple of weeks when an underground blast in Shaft Two killed five miners. Toru and Carter later fell through a sub-shaft into a built tunnel and found a sealed door under the Eitr cut, while the northern towns stopped answering radio traffic. The Jackals were late to a second Black Goo strike on Heaven's Cradle, then burned for Shānmén after a satellite lock.

A horseshoe ship hung over New Luhansk and turned that town, then the jungle, into rust-red mutants. The Fury destroyed the bomber, lost the first dropship at the Svarog gate, and held a later landing zone at the tailings until five people reached the bay. Toru and a mutating archaeologist fell from the cargo hatch during climb-out, and the dropship left the atmosphere.

The Knot At Svarog Mine

The Knot was a family mining company indentured to the Jutou Combine, based on Pylos when they were not on a contract. Each member wore a vial of New Zealand soil. On Shānmén they worked Svarog, an equatorial Eitr mine on a mountain above rainforest, with two deep shafts, geodomes, and a fence built to keep workers in.

Toru McClintock-Riley ran the team at about fifty, with her youngest daughter Lena Waipapa-Riley next in line and a baby-credit share already approved with Lena's off-world wife Sophie. Carter was a refurbished Jutou companion synthetic who also ran the mine's synth net. The rest of the on-site Knot were Bianca Ting-Riley, widow of Toru's son Oliver and a former UPP sharpshooter, Toru's twenty-year-old nephew Nathan Bennetts-Riley, comms specialist Jin Hua Deng with her adopted children Bai Yun, seven, and Da Shi, three, and minerals specialist Pinar Osman-Riley, who lived in a sealed shell because open air would kill her.

Five Dead In Shaft Two

A klaxon pulled the camp to Shaft Two after an underground blast. Mine manager Petro Kozak was not on the deck, and safety manager Lester Whittaker hid by the hoist while survivors talked about teeth and things in the walls. Toru treated the talk as carbon monoxide, because the Combine had not bought portable sensors and the fixed ones failed in groundwater.

Carter read five flatline PDTs among about thirty miners who had been below. Recalled Weyland-Yutani David units and Working Joes pulled the injured out, then Kozak sent the Knot off the rescue so production could resume. A week later the uninjured Two miners went to New Luhansk for reassignment, and the Eitr vein in Shaft One was running out.

Heaven's Cradle Is Empty

On the Atlatl-class Righteous Fury, once laid down as the USS Bronte, Mae was on the bridge. She was a few months old, an AI mixed from Davis and Zula Hendricks after Davis met robotics tech Mr. Higgs on LV-222, and she wore a combat-synth body because Davis was dead. Zula commanded from the ship and stayed off away missions. Major Ronny Yoo had been with her since Jericho 3, after she lost Amanda Ripley.

Two townships on the planet once called Isle V, Combine name Heaven's Cradle, were empty. The last transmission showed an unknown ship drop a black mess that rewrote people and animals into eyeless clawed forms without a Facehugger cycle, the second such strike after LV-038. Mae put the next target at the rim of the Weyland Isles, and a satellite lock sent the Fury on a 67-hour burn toward GJ1187 / Shānmén. Captain Olivia Shipp sat with the Jericho veterans in the galley before that burn and asked them to shoot her if the pathogen changed her.

The Iris Door Under Shaft One

In Shaft One a jammed shotcrete robot and a seismic slip dropped Toru and Carter through granite into a smoothed oval tunnel. About twenty meters west they found a two-leaf iris door with no hinges and writing in at least three scripts, then silver liquid climbed the carvings and lit them. Carter had no human record of the design.

Combine policy said to tell the site archaeologists at once, but the Knot voted 4-3 to sound out the Brotherhood black market instead of a Combine uplink or Kozak. Nathan had a contact in New Luhansk through security officer Aoki Sayō. Jin Hua then found Sueños Grandes, Neues Aurich, and Novaya Tver silent, and a low unknown data stream coming through the rock from below the door.

Nathan Takes The Find To Town

Nathan drove a scuttle-bug to New Luhansk, about ten kilometers from Svarog, a UPP port town of about 10,000 that had started as a food colony before Eitr poisoned the water. At Trevor's he paid an orphan named Jaime to watch the bug and sat with Brotherhood fence Marchuk. He sold the alien find as information, not a finished deal, and stayed past Aoki's sundown gate curfew to wait for an answer.

Nathan was in New Luhansk when a silent horseshoe ship pushed through the cloud and hung over the port. No UA, UPP, Three World Empire, or ICSC file matched it.

The Bombing Of New Luhansk

Pitch-black objects spiraled from the ship over New Luhansk without a conventional blast. People vomited black fluid, and pale adult Xenomorphs tore out of their backs, eyeless, with spear tails and acid blood. Nathan crushed one on an ore-truck bed, then a second snatched Jaime off the road.

He radioed the mine and ran for the gate, but Kozak ordered the camp sealed. About a dozen pale figures caught the late guards in the open and tore them apart. Nathan died on the wrong side of the wire with about two dozen people the cameras later showed at the gate.

Toru Seals Svarog

Toru stopped Lena from going after Kozak. Combine attack papers written after the Hasanova black site told them to lock the cage, collapse the shaft head, and sit in a hardened ventilation tower for about two weeks of air. Food and water in the core would last about that long if they stayed still, and Carter gave the electrified fence one or two hours before power failed.

Toru blew the decline as the fence failed. Working Joes held the rear while she and Carter reached the cage, and the creatures destroyed those units. Lena triggered the smaller shaft-head charges after the cage dropped, and about thirty miners and security reached the core, including teacher Miss Vesley and three children. Kozak's daughters had been in New Luhansk.

Pinar Sends The Mayday

The long-range antenna sat on the surface, and a synthetic retina could not open it. Pinar went up a meter-wide emergency shaft in her 5,000-psi shell, aligned the dish, and got a satellite mayday out while the horseshoe ship hovered over New Luhansk in the camera feed.

A rust-red winged form hit her from above, lifted her, and dropped her. The shell held the claw strikes and failed on the fall, and Toru collapsed that shaft. Jin Hua later played an infrasound call-and-response between the ship and the buried door.

The Kopat Break-In And The Bomber

On the third day, mutated kopats, native gopher-like animals, broke the A1 ceiling. They were rust-red and about the size of small dogs, with inner jaws and acid blood. Toru cut several with a stripped rock drill, then Carter blew the tunnel. Lena, Mateo, Dutch, and Grasshopper sealed A3 and A4 the same way, and Bianca armored a P-5000 loader.

The Fury hid behind Shānmén's largest moon, found no answer on UPP codes from General Kasey Ristic, and heard Svarog's fading distress. Zula identified herself to Toru, then Kozak tried to take the channel. Two XIP-34B Hornet missiles wrecked the hovering bomber, and the hull fell on New Luhansk. Mae rode an Integer 3 combat synth against orders after Zula refused to send Mae's own shell.

The First Dropship Crashes

Kozak took about twenty security and Combine staff up the air shaft first and ringed the children with rifles until Aoki left that group and stayed with the Knot. Lieutenant Roza Ganser came in on the UD-24 Austrian Egg-Terminator with two fireteams, four Integer synthetics, and Sunspot Good Boys. Mae hid in synth A-Delta.

Rust-red wildlife, including shovel-headed forms about four meters at the shoulder, overran Kozak's column at the broken gate. Dropship guns pulled the mass onto the Austrian, and the ship went down with Ganser's platoon. Mae tight-beamed a backup about 86 seconds before that body was destroyed. The wreck tracker later crawled east of Svarog at about 10 km/h, too slow for a flying hull.

Bianca Dies At The Tower

Creatures came down the cracked ventilation tower after Ganser's ship was lost. Toru sent Carter back to the core with Jin Hua, Lena, and Bai Yun, then chose a granite cut toward the old tailings drain. Bianca stayed in her loader with Aoki's plasma rifle and charges from Gooseneck George, walked toward the breach, and was killed there. Toru then blew the tunnel.

About 21 people remained below. Zula promised a second ship at the tailings coordinates. Olivia Shipp was flying a northern-hemisphere rescue at the same time. Lieutenant Ray Ackerman took the tailings job, and Zula sent Mae with him in a third combat body after Mae fought Erynis for control of the Fury.

The Knot Enters The Temple

Carter opened the iris door. Combine archaeologists Uros Antonijević and Shaun Hewitt wanted the find logged as their work. The Knot sealed the door and blew the shaft behind them. PUPS mapped branching tunnels and chambers about 50 meters across, with no right angles, and bioluminescence that woke as they moved.

Murals showed black sinuous forms like the surface mutants. One chamber held a giant head about 50 meters tall that scanned as bone, not stone. Deeper in, a statue of a penitent Xenomorph-like figure held the roof, carved from a solid block of Eitr, and old degraded resin coated later walls.

Deaths In The Catacombs

Larger rust-red crawlers hit the group as they moved toward the tailings. One took Jacinta Mainstone up a side corridor. Aoki cleared another passage until her plasma failed, then was dragged off firing a pistol. Acid blood tore out Melrose Meryx's jaw, and Benjamin Jones and his son were thrown down and ripped apart. A rust-red eyeless adult Xenomorph then took Jin Hua and Da Shi together.

Carter stopped Toru from following. The people left in that stretch were Toru, Lena, Bai Yun, Carter, Antonijević, and Hewitt. Further rooms showed sacrificial art of facehugger-like things locked on the builders' faces, four three-meter statues with short trunks that later proved to be masks, and floor channels of liquid Eitr around script.

Two Engineers Become Xenomorphs

Hewitt opened a black jar and lifted a rack of pale-green ampoules filled with black liquid. Toru forbade samples, then took two ampoules herself when he would not stop. A grey-suited Engineer rose from a silent pod and tore Hewitt apart. Toru threw an ampoule into its face, and the black liquid made it reel.

A second being came out of another pod and grappled the first. Toru blew a wall charge, and the remaining five went through into a water-cut void toward the tailings. Behind them the builders woke as black and blue-black giant Xenomorph forms with new tails and secondary mouths.

The Fight At The Tailings

Ackerman put the UD-24s Egg Beater and Queen B on a scoured tailings valley, with pulse rifles, flame, and RE700 rotary cannons on the APCs. Avian Xenomorphs from Shānmén's large birds hit first. They stood about three meters tall, with rust-red extra armor over black, a thick vertical head fin, and no habit of cocooning hosts. They killed Privates Adam Zeller and Jean Beaulieu and wrecked four combat synths. Mae lost a forearm to an inner jaw and told the line to aim for the black gaps in the red plating.

A rust-red amphibious form about 12 meters long then came out of water too shallow to hide it, crushed Brendan O'Connor, and took Majid Younis into the river. Lena cut her own PDT to blink an SOS, which let Toru find her and Bai Yun in a builder mortuary. Toru reset Carter's failsafe to protect Lena and the child first, then turned to delay two unfolding builder-Xenomorphs in the stream. Pathogen-altered eagles with about 10-meter wingspans dropped on those builders and wrecked both APCs. A one-armed Mae pulled Toru behind a shield.

Toru's Fall And The Generals

A dropship cleared jungle and took Toru, Lena, Bai Yun, Carter, Antonijević, Mae, and the remaining Ackerman Jackals. On the climb, Antonijević smeared black pathogen from his sleeve, convulsed, and changed in minutes into a pale clawed thing. The Jackals held fire because a hull breach would stop them leaving the atmosphere. Toru opened the cargo-bay door, locked onto the mutation, and they fell together into Shānmén's cloud.

Lena, Bai Yun, and Carter crossed to Pylos in cryosleep. In cargo bay E7, Zula, Olivia, and Mae met the three generals who funded the Jackals in 2145: Christian Cunningham of the USCM, Kasey Ristic of the UPP, and Washington Sekiguchi of the Three World Empire. Mae's read of Jin Hua's recordings put human and Nearfield synthetic traffic inside the bomber's signal, and the generals ordered the Jackals to find who was flying those hulls. Shānmén was left empty of mining.

Shānmén And The Mutations

Shānmén sat at the edge of the Weyland Isles as GJ1187, a rainforest world that needed no terraforming. The Combine mined equatorial Eitr for hyperdrive work, and the rust-red residue poisoned water, food, and wildlife. Other settlements named in the book were New Luhansk, Sueños Grandes, Neues Aurich, and Novaya Tver. Native animals included shovel-heads, earth trucks, kopats, cave modere, and dragon eagles with wingspans Nathan put at about ten meters.

The pathogen rewrote living tissue without eggs, and human hosts produced pale adult Xenomorphs. Local fauna produced rust-red forms, a host-shaped change the book ties to Eitr in the blood: burrowing kopats, shovel-headed giants, fin-headed avian Xenomorphs, a 12-meter river beast, and winged eagles. The two woken Engineers became black giant Xenomorphs. Antonijević smeared pathogen on the evac ship and changed in minutes, staying pale. The Free League scenario bound in the paperback later names the river form a Thrasher and the eagle form a Raptor.

Confirmed Xenomorph Kills

Nathan crushed one pale adult Xenomorph on the ore-truck bed. Toru's drill and the A1 through A4 charges killed or buried a kopat swarm that was never counted one by one. Carter blew one catacomb crawler with a seismic charge, and Big Boy Five burst another. Aoki's plasma dropped at least one crawler before she was taken.

Jackal fire, flame, sonic Good Boys, and the RE700s drove the first avian wave back and left several of those forms dead. The river beast killed two Marines. Fire from the pad held it back during the evacuation, but the book does not confirm it was destroyed. APC and dropship fire hit the eagles, and those eagles tore down the two builder-Xenomorphs in the stream after Toru's last charges. The Fury's Hornets destroyed the bomber, not a creature. About 10,000 people in New Luhansk and Kozak's surface column were lost to the plague, not logged as individual kills.

Key Characters

• Toru McClintock-Riley was the Knot's lead shaft miner. She sealed Svarog, opened the temple, and died falling from the evac dropship with mutated Antonijević.
• Lena Waipapa-Riley was Toru's daughter. She reached Pylos with Bai Yun and Carter.
• Carter was the Knot synthetic. Toru reset him to protect Lena and Bai Yun, and he left Shānmén with them.
• Bai Yun Lee was Jin Hua's adopted daughter. She survived as the last child of that household.

• Petro Kozak was the Combine mine manager. He closed the gate on Nathan and died in the first surface column.
• Aoki Sayō left Kozak's armed first wave, issued revolvers to the miners, and was dragged off in the catacombs.
• Shaun Hewitt was a Combine archaeologist. A waking Engineer tore him apart.
• Uros Antonijević reached the dropship, smeared pathogen, mutated in the bay, and went out the door with Toru.
• Zula Hendricks commanded the Righteous Fury and the Jackals. After Pylos she was ordered to find who flew the bombers.
• Mae was Davis and Zula's synthetic daughter. She lost two field bodies on Shānmén, saved Toru at the stream, and briefed the generals.
• Olivia Shipp was a Jackals captain and Zula's closest officer after Yoo. She flew a northern rescue and sat the Pylos meeting.
• Ronny Yoo was Zula's major from Jericho 3. He picked Ganser for the Svarog landing and stayed on the Fury.
• Roza Ganser led the first Svarog landing and was lost with the Austrian Egg-Terminator.
• Ray Ackerman led the tailings landing and got the last survivors off the pad.

Place In The Titan Line

Titan released David Barnett's Alien: Colony War in April 2022, then Inferno's Fall that July and August, then Mary SanGiovanni's Alien: Enemy of My Enemy in 2023. Those three were a loose 2180s run, not a numbered trilogy. Ballantine and Carija then carried Zula, Mae, and the Jackals into Alien: Seventh Circle in 2025.

Clara Carija had consulted on Scott Sigler's Aliens: Phalanx and Alex White's Into Charybdis. Inferno's Fall was the first Titan Alien novel she co-wrote the story for. The paperback also binds Andrew E.C. Gaska's Alien RPG cinematic EVAC, set during the same bombardment at Romashka Outpost rather than at Svarog.

Continuity

The story is set in 2186, about seven years after Aliens. Zula commanded a multinational Jackals battalion funded in 2145 by three generals after corporate and military corruption and the Midnighters job on LV-991. Davis was dead before the book opens, and Mae was a few months old. Zula treated Amanda as dead. Colony War later used a hypersleep cover for the same year.

Shānmén was a pathogen bombing, not a planted-egg hive. The Jackals treated LV-038 and Heaven's Cradle as the first two known strikes of that kind. SanGiovanni set Enemy of My Enemy in 2187, about a year later, in that same three-government war. This book has no Yautja.

Editions And Adaptations

Titan's trade paperback came out in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2022 and in the United States on 9 August 2022 at 464 pages. That count includes the bound-in Free League scenario. Titan also released an ebook. Cover art was by Alex Ronald.

Blackstone Publishing released an audiobook on 26 July 2022, read by Julienne Irons, about ten hours and eight minutes. The Jackals story continues in Alien: Seventh Circle, not under a numbered Inferno sequel title.

Behind The Scenes

Ballantine and Carija built a 12-page synopsis on Trello before 20th Century Studios cleared the plot. Ballantine wrote the novel and checked lore with Carija as she went. In a 2022 note on her site, Ballantine said Alex White had recommended Carija, and that they were the first New Zealand and Australian pair, and the first women, to write an Alien novel for Titan. Carija later told Paul Semel she drew on the Dark Horse Zula comics, Prometheus, and the Divine Comedy for the book's circle titles.

The acknowledgements thank editor Steve Saffel, Titan's Nick Landau, Vivian Cheung, Michael Beale, Kevin Eddy, and Julia Lloyd, plus Disney's Nicole Spiegel and Kendrick Pejoro. Cold Iron's Chris L'Étoile, Craig Zinkievich, and Matt Highison helped pin down Olivia Shipp's history and the UPP kit. Free League's Andrew Gaska, Tomas Härenstam, and Nils Karlén coordinated the RPG adventure. Ballantine names military consultant Russ Ware and her husband Tee Morris. Carija names mining-setting help from Kirsty Anderson and theoretical Eitr work from Ralph Sudlowe, and dedicates her share to sister-in-law Fiona Carija.

Conclusion

Alien: Inferno's Fall is Philippa Ballantine's 2022 Titan novel, from a story with Clara Carija, about the 2186 Black Goo strike on Shānmén. It covers the Svarog siege and the Jackals' rescue, and it ends with Toru dead, Lena, Bai Yun, and Carter on Pylos, and Zula ordered to find who was flying the Engineer bombers.
