Alien: Echo: Novel Plot, Characters & Lore
Alien: Echo is a 2019 young-adult novel by Mira Grant, published by Imprint on 9 April 2019. It follows seventeen-year-old Olivia Shipp on the independent colony world Zagreus, where she lived with her twin Viola and their xenobiologist parents under an orange twin-sun sky. A stolen biological survey ship brought a hive to the planet, the outbreak killed most of the colony, and Olivia left orbit in the family shuttle While There's Hope with her girlfriend Kora Burton and Viola's severed head.
Plot Summary
Zagreus And The Shipp Twins
Olivia and Viola Shipp were identical twins, almost eighteen, who had lived on Zagreus for about three months. Their parents, xenobiologists Dr. John Shipp and Dr. Katherine Shipp, held a colony contract to catalogue the wildlife, and Katherine had Colonial Marine experience. The family house sat outside the main dome behind an electric fence, with solar panels and the medical gear used to keep Viola indoors.
The parents presented Viola as a girl with an undocumented autoimmune disease. Olivia went to the settlement school, documented local animals for pay, and wanted to reach Earth so Viola could see better doctors. Classmates doubted Viola existed, and governor's daughter Kora Burton used that rumor to visit, then stayed and became Olivia's girlfriend.
The Flower Field And The Party
Olivia took Kora into a pollen grove of giant flowering stalks after classmate Michel Petrov claimed the flowers were fake. A sightless burrowing predator the colonists called a lion-worm attacked the family ATV, and Olivia used the flower pollen to confuse it until the two of them could wait motionless and let it leave. She burned her hand on orange predatory grass while retrieving the keys, and on the forest trail back Kora kissed her for the first time.
Olivia promised a party so classmates could meet Viola, and the guests were Kora, Michel, Lin, Juan, Alisa, and Paul Gladney. John went to orbit to inspect a biological survey ship the governor had bought for scrap, and Katherine took a team up as well. Michel's mother was among the people on that hull.
John's Warning And The Crash
During the party John sent a recorded warning that a creature had killed Petrov, that the crew had taken a shuttle back toward Zagreus, and that Katherine should take the girls to their own ship without stopping for anyone. A black chitinous animal killed him on that same recording. Viola ran outside, Olivia, Kora, Michel, and Paul followed in the ATV, and the salvage shuttle streaked from orbit and crashed in the mountains about five miles west.
Katherine And The Residence
In a grove a creature dropped onto a meat-deer herd, and Paul ran and was torn open. A second animal approached Viola without striking, then showed a secondary inner jaw. Olivia drove toward the wetlands looking for Katherine, a stampede of Zagreus hippos hit the second animal, and the group found Katherine at the lake with a gray Marine backpack and a volt gun. She confirmed the creatures had come from the crashed shuttle and did not know John was dead.
Back at the house Katherine told Olivia the truth. The biological Viola had died at three, and the sister Olivia had grown up with was a synthetic built from toddler brain scans, dream recordings, footage, and an extrapolative model. The parents had planned to tell her on her eighteenth birthday, though Viola had known for years. Michel tried to grab her, and Katherine fired the volt gun to stop him.
When a creature landed on the roof, Katherine gave Olivia the Marine backpack, which held a hunter's pistol, Viola's manuals and data chips, financial cards, launch codes for While There's Hope, and medical files on the twins. She ran outside as bait so the teenagers could reach the ATV, and a creature killed her at the front door.
The Colony Gate
The survivors reached the colony wall, where guards Rockwell and Johnson opened the gate, and Lin, Juan, Alisa, and Michel went in first. Michel blocked Viola at the threshold because she was not a living person, and Olivia fought him there. Viola wiped Olivia's blood on her face, threw a rock at a wall-crawling creature, and was taken, while a second animal seized Michel and carried him into the wilds. Kora pulled Olivia inside before the gate sealed.
Delia And The Survey Ship
Olivia and Kora went to Governor Delia Burton's residence inside the dome, where a seastead about a hundred miles away had reported about twenty dead and four creatures on the site. Delia admitted the survey ship had been stolen from smugglers who seized it on the way to a corporate scrapyard with scientists aboard, killed those scientists, and sold the hull cheap for colony expansion. She had lost shuttle contact before the crash, and Kora left with Olivia to recover Viola.
The Cave Hive
Topographic maps put the hive in caves near the burned wreck, and Olivia and Kora used lion-worm pheromone vials and pollen as scent cover. The walls held cocoons of Michel, Paul, Katherine, hippos, meat-deer, and lion-worms. Michel was alive, with splits at the corners of his mouth, and Viola was there with a leg severed and wiring exposed, treated as non-prey.
An adult Xenomorph attacked, and Olivia threw Viola's body at it, then smashed a pheromone vial against the cave wall so a lion-worm would breach the stone. The creature tore Viola's arms and chest away, and Olivia sawed off the head below the chin because the memory and a separate power supply sat there. Katherine's cocoon fell in the breach and did not get up.
On the ATV a hunting adult Xenomorph followed them out of the forest. Olivia lured it into the wetlands, threw more lion-worm scent into the waterweeds, and a Zagreus hippo hit the animal before she shot the remaining adult Xenomorph through the skull with Katherine's pistol. Acid blood wounded the hippo. The splits on Michel's lips came from something forcing his mouth open long enough to put an egg inside him, and Olivia left him in the cave.
The Fallen Colony
The dome had an eight-foot acid-melted breach, and the streets held few bodies. Alisa, covered in gore and carrying Rockwell's sidearm, raged at Olivia and ran off, and they later found her with her throat torn out. Lin and Juan were not seen again after the gate.
Delia's apartment door had been broken and melted, and she was cocooned on the wall with the same mouth splits. Kora cut her free with a heated kitchen knife. The captured colonists had been stuck to walls and shown flower-like things of living meat and bone that blossomed, a Xenomorph egg opening into a Facehugger. One of those animals was inside Delia's abdomen and was not ready to come out, and she refused the shuttle.
A larger hybrid broke up through the floor, keeping the long black head and clawed arms while taking lion-worm traits: a beak, golden cilia, a thicker body, and a burrowing drive. Delia shoved Kora aside and emptied Rockwell's gun into the skull without breaking the chitin, and the hybrid tore her in half. A pale premature Chestburster slid from the wound, and the adult Xenomorph stepped on it, spraying acid through the floor.
While There's Hope
Viola wanted the head left behind, because lion-worm scent on her circuitry could draw more hybrids, and Kora would not abandon her. At the launch port a paler hybrid attacked and injured Kora. Olivia baited it with the head, collapsed a catwalk onto construction scrap, and shot the animal through the skull, and Kora recovered the head.
The three boarded While There's Hope, a rebuilt former cruise liner Viola had named at eleven, with room for about six people if they packed in. The shuttle cleared the dome and reached orbit, where Olivia lit the emergency beacon, warned ships not to land on Zagreus, and asked for medical help for one badly injured passenger.
Zagreus
Zagreus was an Earth-like independent colony of almost five thousand people under Governor Delia, with twin suns and an orange sky whenever those suns were up. Ordinary citizens were not allowed to own androids, a rule tied to spyware fears and colonial independence, and the Shipps were an exception because Viola was a unique custom build with disclosed brain maps. Weyland-Yutani did not own the colony. Olivia used the company as a color-scheme joke, and Delia had bought a hull that smugglers took off a corporate scrap run.
Native life on Zagreus included snuffle-squirrels, meat-deer, carnivorous orange grass, and the lion-worms, and the wetlands held territorial hippos large enough to fight an adult Xenomorph. A seastead sat about a hundred miles from the main dome, while the family house, the mountain caves, and the launch port sat outside or at the edge of that dome.
Confirmed Xenomorph Kills
Olivia destroyed one adult Xenomorph in the wetlands after a hippo wounded it, then destroyed the paler hybrid at the launch port. A lion-worm fought the adult Xenomorph that wrecked Viola's body in the cave, and the first hybrid tore Delia apart and crushed the premature Chestburster that came out of her. John, Katherine, Paul, Michel, Alisa, Delia, Michel's mother, and the survey-ship crew were killed by the hive or the crash, not by Olivia's pistol.
Key Characters
- Olivia Shipp was a seventeen-year-old xenobiologist's daughter who could fly the family shuttle. She pulled Kora out of the flower field, took Viola's head from the cave, and sent the warning from orbit.
- Viola Shipp was the synthetic twin built after the biological sister died at three. The hive ignored her as prey, she drew a creature off at the gate, and she survived as a severed head with a backup said to exist on the transport.
- Kora Burton was the governor's daughter and Olivia's girlfriend. She left the dome to recover Viola, cut her mother free, and reached orbit with an acid burn on her shoulder and no mouth splits.
- Katherine Shipp was a behavioral xenobiologist and former Colonial Marine. She told Olivia the truth about Viola, handed over the Marine backpack, and was killed at the residence, then found cocooned in the cave.
- John Shipp was a xenobiologist killed on the survey-ship recording after a creature reached him.
- Delia Burton was planetary governor. She had bought the stolen survey ship, was cocooned in her apartment, and was torn in half by the first lion-worm hybrid.
- Michel Petrov spread the rumor that Viola did not exist, blocked her at the gate, and was left cocooned in the cave with an egg inside him.
- Paul Gladney fled the first field attack and was torn open there.
- Alisa survived long enough to take Rockwell's sidearm, then was found dead in the colony streets with her throat destroyed.
- Lin and Juan entered the dome at the gate and were not seen again.
Place In The Novel Line
Imprint, a Macmillan young-adult house, released the hardcover on 9 April 2019, after Alex White's Alien: The Cold Forge in 2018 and before Keith R. A. DeCandido's Alien: Isolation novel in July and Tim Waggoner's Alien: Prototype in October. It was the franchise's first young-adult novel, and it was not a Titan book. Olivia later appears as a Jackals captain in Philippa Ballantine's Alien: Inferno's Fall and Alien: Seventh Circle, then as colonel of the UAS Endeavor in Aliens: Fireteam Elite and as a general in Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2.
Continuity
Grant's text never prints a calendar year or the words Xenomorph, Queen, Facehugger, or Chestburster. Later Corps files and the Fireteam Elite crew brief put the Zagreus outbreak in 2172, with Olivia born on 5 January 2155 and enlisted on her eighteenth birthday in 2173. The animals match XX121 stock: egg, Facehugger, implanted host, and adult Xenomorph, plus lion-worm hybrids through the DNA reflex.
No Queen is shown. The cave is a young hive, and Olivia expects the colony dome to become the better nest. The hybrids keep the long head, claws, and acid blood and add lion-worm beaks, cilia, and burrowing. One lion-worm near the cave looked as if it had burst from the inside, and the first hybrid killed Delia even though she was carrying young.
Later stories pick Olivia up from that shuttle, then put her through Katanga, the Jackals, and the Endeavor. Kora and Viola do not return in those later works.
Planned Continuation Comic
Dark Horse announced Aliens: Colonial Marines - Rising Threat in 2019 as an eight-issue follow-up to Aliens: Rescue and a bridge from Echo to Cold Iron's then-upcoming Aliens: Fireteam Elite game. The solicits put Corporal Olivia Shipp in command of tired Marines on the USS Typhoon who broke orders to pull survivors out of the Katanga refinery. Dark Horse dropped writer Brian Wood, and the series was cancelled before issue one.
The later Fireteam Elite crew file kept that job as Corps history. In 2177, twenty-two-year-old Corporal Shipp was aboard the twenty-year-old Nassau-class attack transport Typhoon when it caught a Mid Rim distress call. Seegson colonists had fled a surface outbreak into orbital Katanga, and some of them were carrying Chestbursters. A refinery worker overrode the computers and destroyed the Marine dropships when the unit would not let him handle the infestation himself. Shipp moved the remaining civilians from the top of Likasi Tower down to the shuttle hangars at Bashi Tower. They escaped on refinery shuttles, and she received the Marine Commendation Medal. Years later that same hulk sat in orbit over LV-895 as a Weyland-Yutani hive.
Behind The Scenes
Mira Grant is the biomedical-science-fiction name of Seanan McGuire, who had written the Newsflesh trilogy and been nominated for the Hugo Award, and whose novel Feed was named on NPR's 100 Killer Thrillers list. She had written in the Predator line with the short story Blood and Sand in Predator: If It Bleeds. Her agent was Diana Fox, John Morgan edited the manuscript, and the book is dedicated to Jennifer and to horror-movie kids. Elynn Cohen designed the pages, and Amanda Spielman designed the Imprint logo.
AvP Galaxy posted the title on 19 July 2018 as a 320-page hardcover due 9 April 2019. Catalog records list the finished hardcover at 293 pages, some retail listings print 304, and the ebook used the same April date. ISFDB records a 2020 Lodestar Award nomination that stayed below the cutoff, with 13 nominations, and Cold Iron later put the Zagreus teenager into the Fireteam Elite crew file.
Conclusion
Alien: Echo is Mira Grant's 2019 Imprint novel about Olivia Shipp on Zagreus. After the stolen survey ship crashed a hive onto the colony and the creatures began taking lion-worm DNA, it ends with Olivia, Kora Burton, and Viola's head in While There's Hope, asking for a rescue and warning other ships off the planet.
