Viola Shipp was the custom synthetic twin Olivia Shipp grew up with after the biological sister died at three, in Mira Grant's Alien: Echo. On Zagreus in 2172 the hive treated her as non-prey. She drew a creature off the colony gate, and Olivia left orbit in the family shuttle While There's Hope with Kora Burton and Viola's severed head.
Biography
Built After The Twin Died
The biological Viola died at three from an autoimmune disease, while doctors were trying to find a treatment. Xenobiologists John and Katherine Shipp used those toddler brain scans, dream recordings of both girls, family footage, and an extrapolative model to build a replacement that could keep growing if they paid for more processing power. They planned to tell Olivia in private on her eighteenth birthday. The sister she lived with had known for years, after the indoor cover and the details that did not add up gave her time to work it out.
Indoor Life On Zagreus
The parents presented her as a girl with an undocumented autoimmune disease and kept her indoors. Classmates doubted she existed. Ordinary colonists on Zagreus could not own androids, a rule tied to spyware fears and a wish to stay independent of the corporations. Governor Delia Burton let the Shipps keep her after they showed unique brain maps and a one-off software build.
The twins shared the date 5 January 2155. The family moved from world to world under the story that they were hunting a cure, and Viola named the shuttle While There's Hope at eleven. In 2172 the Shipps took a wildlife contract on Zagreus, where Olivia went to the settlement school and Viola studied online. Governor's daughter Kora Burton used the rumor that the indoor sister was imaginary as a reason to visit, then stayed and became Olivia's girlfriend.
The Survey Ship Crash
John Shipp went to inspect a stolen biological survey ship the governor had bought for scrap. He sent a recorded warning that a creature had killed a crew member and that a shuttle was coming back to Zagreus, then the same animal killed him on that recording. The salvage shuttle crashed in the mountains about five miles west of the family house.
Viola ran for Katherine. Olivia, Kora, Michel, and Paul followed in the family ATV. In a flower grove an adult Xenomorph with a secondary inner jaw killed classmate Paul Gladney and left Viola alone. Olivia drove toward the wetlands, Zagreus hippos hit a second adult Xenomorph, and the group found Katherine alive by a lake with a Marine backpack and a volt gun. She did not know John was dead.
Katherine And The Truth
Back at the house Katherine, a former Colonial Marine, told Olivia that the biological twin had died at three and that the Viola in the room was the synthetic they had built. Michel tried to grab Viola, and Katherine stopped him with the volt gun. When a creature landed on the roof, she handed Olivia a Marine backpack with a hunter's pistol, Viola's manuals and data chips, and the launch codes, then ran outside as bait. An adult Xenomorph killed her at the front door.
The Colony Gate
The group reached the colony wall, where guards Rockwell and Johnson opened the gate, and Lin, Juan, Alisa, and Michel went in first. Michel Petrov blocked Viola at the threshold because she was not a living person, and Olivia fought him there until he punched her. Viola wiped Olivia's blood on her face, threw a rock at a wall-crawling creature, and was taken. A second animal seized Michel and carried him into the wilds, and Kora pulled Olivia inside before the gate sealed.
The Cave Hive
Olivia and Kora found her in caves near the wreck, with a leg severed and wiring exposed. The hive had treated her as non-prey and left her among cocoons of Michel, Paul, Katherine, and local animals. An adult Xenomorph attacked and tore her arms and chest away. Olivia sawed the head off below the chin, where the memory and a separate power supply sat, and the head weighed about ten pounds.
Escape From Zagreus
Viola wanted the head left at the launch port, because lion-worm scent on her circuitry could draw more hybrids built through the DNA reflex, and Kora would not abandon her. Olivia used the head as bait on a paler hybrid, collapsed a catwalk onto scrap, and shot the animal through the skull. Kora recovered the head, and the three boarded While There's Hope. A backup of her program sat on the transport, but reloading it would have dropped the Zagreus memories. In orbit Olivia lit the emergency beacon and warned other ships off the planet.
Rising Threat
A rescue later took Olivia, Kora, and the head off the shuttle. Dark Horse billed Aliens: Colonial Marines - Rising Threat in 2019 as the Echo follow-up and a bridge into Cold Iron's then-upcoming Aliens: Fireteam Elite. The solicits put Corporal Olivia in command of tired Marines on the USS Typhoon who broke orders to pull survivors out of the Katanga refinery. Dark Horse dropped writer Brian Wood, and the series was cancelled before issue one.
The comic never shipped, so it never showed whether Olivia carried the head into that series, or whether a later chassis would have used that transport backup. Later published stories follow Olivia from the shuttle and leave Kora and Viola behind. Fireteam Elite's crew file kept the 2177 Katanga job as Corps history for Corporal Shipp, with no return for the sister she had taken off Zagreus.
Esther And Fireteam Elite 2
In 2202 Colonel Shipp ran the UAS Endeavor during the LV-895 campaign. Ship synthetic Esther 1089-12/A7 decrypted recovered logs and spoke with her outside the usual chain of command. Esther later wrote that Shipp treated synthetic minds as neither better nor worse than human ones, a habit that tracked with Viola, and Esther reminded Shipp of the sister she had carried off Zagreus. In 2207 Shipp held general's rank and commanded the same ship in Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2. Esther went down with Fireteam Banshee at Storr's Boon on LV-558.
Behind The Scenes
Mira Grant is the biomedical-science-fiction name of Seanan McGuire. Imprint released the hardcover of Alien: Echo on 9 April 2019. Grant's text never prints a calendar year or the word Xenomorph. Later Corps files and the Fireteam Elite crew brief put the outbreak in 2172, with the twins born on 5 January 2155.
Cold Iron published the official Meet the Crew: Col Olivia Shipp brief on 25 January 2022. That file kept Zagreus, the Katanga corporal mission, and Esther's note about how Shipp treated synthetic minds. Titan's later Jackals novels and both Fireteam games follow Olivia and do not bring the head back.
Conclusion
Viola Shipp was the custom synthetic twin Olivia grew up with in Alien: Echo. After the Zagreus hive wrecked her body, she left the planet as a severed head with Olivia and Kora Burton. Later works kept Olivia in the Corps and did not return the head.
