Petrovich was the chief engineer on the Weyland-Yutani deep-space research vessel USCSS Maginot in Alien: Earth, played by Enzo Cilenti. Disillusioned after a partner died collecting specimens for a quarter share, he cut a secret deal with Prodigy CEO Boy Kavalier to crash the Maginot into Prodigy City in exchange for wealth and a new body. About seventeen days from Earth in 2120 he started a containment fire, opened egg cases, damaged navigation and fuel systems while faking cryosleep, killed junior security officer Clem in a gunfight, and was impaled by chief security officer Kumi Morrow before the ship hit New Siam.
Biography
Aboard The USCSS Maginot
Petrovich joined the Maginot before or during its 2055 launch on Weyland-Yutani's sixty-five-year specimen-collection voyage. Ship records and crew talk place him as chief engineer over the engineering department that included engineer Shmuel and apprentice engineer Malachite. His utility shirt carried a PETROVITCH name tape and a Maginot mission patch, and his post put him closest to the systems that later became the sabotage targets. Across the long run he spent stretches in stasis with the rest of the crew, then came up when the ship needed awake engineering hands.
The mission cost him a partner who died getting the lifeforms, including a death he later described as bugs laying eggs in his woman's eyes for a quarter share. That loss, the decades away from Earth, and the low pay left him bitter toward Weyland-Yutani red tape and the specimen priority that outranked the living crew. By the return approach he was ready to sell the Maginot's cargo and trajectory to a rival company rather than finish the run clean.
Deal With Boy Kavalier
At some point on the voyage Petrovich opened frequent secret conversations with Boy Kavalier, CEO of Prodigy Corp, about the lifeforms the Maginot had collected. Kavalier said that if Petrovich could put the ship down in Prodigy territory he would be incredibly rich. Petrovich asked for a new body, meaning a hybrid transfer of the kind Prodigy was building and Weyland-Yutani could not offer, and Kavalier told him not yet, but that he would be at the top of the list. The call logs later recovered by Morrow showed the conspiracy plainly: crash the Maginot into Prodigy City so the specimens fell inside Kavalier's kingdom.
Corrupting those logs was part of the cover. When captain RJ Dinsdale later told the waking crew that comms were down and log files were corrupt, Petrovich offered to look into it, which would have let him bury the trail further. Morrow cut that offer off and assigned the investigation to security instead, which put the deleted files back in reach of the one officer who could still stop him.
Four Months From Earth
In 2120, with about four months left to Earth and roughly 805 million miles still to go, the changeover crew woke for a mess meal. When the table talked about the five companies that controlled Earth, Petrovich corrected the room on Prodigy: it dealt with synths and AI, and it had been started by a kid ten years earlier. Dinsdale reported that comms were down, the logs were corrupt, and the ship was burning too much fuel, then told executive officer Zoya Zaveri and navigator Teng to find systems they could shut down. Morrow and Sullivan went back into hypersleep, and Petrovich gave the impression that he did too.
He did not stay asleep. He kept waking, doctoring cryopod logs so MU/TH/UR still reported his capsule full, and moving through the mechanical areas while the listed roster said he was in stasis. Teng later noticed that a full cryopod reading did not always mean the pod was occupied, but he did not name Petrovich when Morrow interviewed him. That gap of waking time is when the sabotage was staged.
Sabotaging The Maginot
Around seventeen days from Earth, Petrovich deliberately started a fire in the containment area and opened the containers that held the Alien eggs. Captain Dinsdale and science officer Bronski entered to fight the fire and were attacked by escaped Facehuggers. The same fire fried navigational systems and engine relays, which took control of the Maginot away from the crew. Petrovich then deleted incriminating files and kept the computer showing him asleep so the waking roster would not flag him.
Later he damaged a fuel pod, dumping reserves until the Maginot was flying on fumes and dropping from missile to arrow on its dive toward Earth. He did not set out to free every specimen for its own sake; the fire and blast were meant to cripple the ship so it would hit Prodigy ground, even though the Facehugger releases and later escapes still put him at the same risk as everyone else aboard. As chief engineer he knew which systems to break so the remaining crew could not put the Maginot back under control in time.
Exposed And Firefight
Morrow recovered the deleted comms files and saw the Boy Kavalier deal, then used Teng's cryopod tip to understand that someone listed as asleep was awake. He went to the cryochamber for Petrovich and found the pod empty. En route through the ship Petrovich saw Morrow and junior security officer Clem, opened fire with an armory pistol, wounded Clem, and later fatally shot him in the head after Morrow dragged him into the lab for cover.
Death
Morrow left by another door, circled back, and impaled Petrovich through the chest with his cybernetic arm.
Before he died Petrovich told Morrow he could not stop it, and that they wanted their monsters. The Maginot stayed on its crash course into Prodigy City in New Siam with the specimens loose and most of the crew already dead or dying. Morrow later remained the only Maginot crew member known to have survived the impact.
Personality And Traits
Petrovich mixed mess-hall joking with a long private grievance against the company that had spent his life and his partner's for specimens and a quarter share. At the table he sounded like any other Maginot hand complaining about Earth politics and Prodigy's kid founder; off the roster he was already selling the ship to that same founder. He covered the conspiracy with corrupted logs, a fake cryo status, and an offer to "help" investigate the damage he had caused. When Morrow closed in he switched from cover to open violence and killed Clem rather than surrender.
The same engineering skill that kept the Maginot running for decades made him the crewman who could cripple it past repair. He wanted money and a hybrid body more than he wanted the specimens kept safe for Weyland-Yutani, and he accepted mass death in Prodigy City as the price of putting those specimens on Kavalier's ground. His last words framed the crash as something larger than himself: companies that wanted their monsters, with the Maginot already committed as the delivery system.
Behind The Scenes
Enzo Cilenti played Petrovich in Alien: Earth. Series creator Noah Hawley later described the character as a man who gave up sixty-five years for the mission, decided he was not getting paid enough, and took Boy Kavalier's offer without caring who ended up with the creatures.
Famous Quotes
- "It doesn't matter. You can't stop it."
- "They want their monsters. Here they come."
Conclusion
Petrovich was the Maginot chief engineer who turned the ship's return into a directed crash for Boy Kavalier. He faked cryosleep, burned containment, opened egg cases, wrecked navigation and fuel, and killed Clem when Morrow closed the case. Morrow stopped him with a cybernetic blade, but not before the Maginot was already locked on Prodigy City with its specimens loose. The saboteur died aboard; the deal he struck still shaped the war over the wreck on Earth.
