Zoya Zaveri was the executive officer of the Weyland-Yutani deep-space research vessel USCSS Maginot in Alien: Earth, played by Richa Moorjani. When Captain RJ Dinsdale died after a containment fire, she became acting captain about seventeen days from Earth. She tried to keep her crew alive while chief security officer Kumi Morrow insisted that the specimens mattered more than any of them. A Xenomorph born from science officer Bronski killed her outside the MU/TH/UR chamber after Morrow welded the door shut.

Aboard The USCSS Maginot

Zaveri joined the Maginot before its 2055 launch on a sixty-five-year specimen-collection mission for Weyland-Yutani. As executive officer she stood next to Captain Dinsdale in the ship's chain of command and shared the long cryo cycle with the rest of the active crew. At some point during the voyage she began a romantic relationship with science officer Bronski, even though company policy forbade relationships between crew members. Security chief Morrow later used that relationship against her when he wanted to seize command.

Four Months From Earth

In 2120, with about four months left to Earth, Zaveri woke with the changeover crew and ate in the Maginot mess hall. When apprentice engineer Malachite said Weyland-Yutani controlled the Moon, she corrected him: Luna belonged to Dynamic, while Yutani held North and South America, Mars, and Saturn. She then pressed navigator Teng for a clear reading on the distance to Earth's orbit; after a sarcastic answer in seconds he admitted they were four months out, give or take a few days.

Captain Dinsdale reported that communications were down, the log files looked corrupted, and the ship was burning too much fuel. Morrow said security would investigate the comms, and Dinsdale told Zaveri and Teng to find systems they could shut down. When engineer Shmuel joked about dumping Chibuzo's specimens, Morrow cut him off and reminded the table that the specimens were the mission. Dinsdale went back into cryo and told Zaveri to wake him on final approach.

Acting Captain After Dinsdale's Death

About seventeen days from Earth, a fire broke out in containment. Dinsdale and Bronski answered the alarm and were both attacked by escaped Facehuggers. Doctor Rahim tried to cut the creature off Dinsdale at the base of its tail; acid blood killed the captain. Junior security officer Clem woke Morrow, and Zaveri took charge in the medbay while still dealing with Bronski, whom she called compromised.

Chibuzo recited company protocol: anyone who touched alien life was to go into cryo for the rest of the journey. Zaveri ordered Teng to help Rahim put Bronski in a tube and to prep Dinsdale's body for burial in space, then told Morrow to get dressed and meet her on the bridge. On the bridge Morrow argued that the fire that had fried navigation and engine relays looked like incompetence or sabotage, and he wanted a ship-wide emergency so he could open an inquiry. Zaveri refused to panic the crew with talk of a saboteur before she took the case to Mother.

Conflict With Morrow And Mother

Morrow told her he knew about Bronski and claimed her judgment was compromised. He warned that if the security officer believed the acting captain was not protecting the ship, company rules let him take command himself. Zaveri answered that she was responsible for her people; Morrow answered that he was responsible for getting the cargo home intact, whether or not the crew survived. She registered a formal GR30 command change with Mother: Dinsdale was deceased and Executive Officer Zoya Zaveri had taken command.

When she asked Mother for room to protect the crew if the threat grew, the computer held her to the specimen-first priority and warned that refusal would hand command to the chief security officer. Zaveri acknowledged the protocol. A later fuel-pod blast dropped reserves to about eight percent and left the Maginot on a collision course with Earth unless navigation came back. She wanted to wake the rest of the crew for help; Morrow opposed adding more people and emotions to a ship that already held a saboteur and loose specimens.

Bronski And The Chestburster

Before the worst of the crisis, Zaveri visited Bronski in cryo, still facehugged, and left Utah soil on his capsule while telling him they were almost home. The Facehugger's metabolism did not slow with the host the way the crew expected. A cryopod quarantine breach followed: an embryo hatched from Bronski, killed him, and smashed out of the tube as a young Xenomorph. In the armory Morrow issued Zaveri a pistol with electric, nonlethal rounds and ordered capture, not kill, because acid blood could burn through the hull.

Mess Hall Briefing

In the mess hall Zaveri told the remaining crew that Bronski was dead, a Xenomorph was loose, fuel was nearly gone, and a saboteur was aboard. She declared a ship-wide emergency and suspended non-duty movement. When Malachite kept eating and talking through the meeting, she docked him a one-sixteenth share on the record. Morrow demanded duty rosters and activity logs within an hour, ordered travel in pairs, and refused to arm anyone else until he trusted them.

After the meeting she pulled Chibuzo aside and asked straight out whether Chibuzo had sabotaged the ship. Chibuzo said no, and Zaveri asked for a way to track the Xenomorph. Chibuzo mentioned elevated gamma readings from the eggs and thought a Geiger counter might work. They headed for the specimen lab together.

Ocellus Escape

In the zoo lab Chibuzo realized the Trypanohyncha Ocellus had escaped its containment. Zaveri ordered the lab sealed so they could contain that threat and deal with it later. Rahim called them to the medbay on an urgent channel: Malachite was vomiting blood and would not wake. Morrow arrived with news that Petrovitch was the saboteur, but the medical emergency came first. With two crises breaking at once, Zaveri left the Ocellus behind a sealed door and the saboteur question for later, and took the crew straight to the medbay.

Malachite Surgery

Scans showed six dark bodies lining Malachite's digestive tract and main artery. Rahim asked to open him up; Zaveri authorized the surgery over Morrow's contamination warning. The bodies were blood-siphoning ticks from Species 19. When Rahim tried to pull one free, the creatures released a toxin that killed Rahim, Chibuzo, and Malachite, and Morrow forced Zaveri to seal the medbay with the dead inside.

Relieved Of Command

Shaken by the medbay deaths, Zaveri lost the room. Morrow took command, ordered a move to seal the bridge, and sent Shmuel to transfer engine function while he and Clem woke the remaining crew. Morrow made it plain that the Maginot now ran on his security command and the cargo-first directive, not on her judgment. Under the company protocol Mother had already warned her about, command passed to the chief security officer, and Zaveri no longer gave the orders on her own ship. He told Zaveri to go with Shmuel. Clem later asked what was wrong with her as the security pair pushed on with electric rounds and cargo-first orders.

Xenomorph Chase

Alone outside the sealed medbay, Zaveri poured out the last of her Utah soil and was ambushed by the grown Xenomorph. She ran through the ship as it chased her and tried to seal a door with a welder. On the bridge she found Shmuel, but the escaped Ocellus had taken his body; the puppeteered engineer knocked her unconscious. When she woke, Shmuel and the Xenomorph were fighting, and she used the chaos to reach Mother.

Death

Morrow was already inside the Mother chamber. Zaveri begged him to open the door; instead he used an augmentation in his cybernetic arm to weld it shut. With nowhere left to run, the Xenomorph killed her in the corridor outside. Morrow later reported to Yutani that there were no other Maginot survivors before the ship hit Prodigy City, and that the cargo had survived.

Behind The Scenes

Behind the scenes filming of Maginot crew scenes for Alien: Earth

Richa Moorjani played Zoya Zaveri in the Alien: Earth episodes "Neverland" and "In Space, No One...". She had already worked with series creator Noah Hawley on the fifth season of Fargo as Deputy Indira Olmstead. Hawley offered her an Indian name for the Maginot officer; she sent lists of first and last names, and he chose Zoya Zaveri because it had a ring she liked. Moorjani has said she did not audition in the usual way: Hawley texted her, set a video call, and she was soon flying to Bangkok to shoot, then catching up on the Alien films with help from her husband.

Conclusion

Zoya Zaveri spent most of Alien: Earth's Maginot story trying to hold a dying ship and a frightened crew together under company rules written for cargo, not people. She corrected Malachite in the mess hall, took command after Dinsdale died, argued with Morrow and Mother, authorized the surgery that killed three of her people, and died outside the computer room when Morrow chose the specimens over her. Her short command is one of the clearest statements in the series of how Weyland-Yutani valued the Maginot's monsters above the men and women who brought them home.
