Shmuel was an engineer on the Weyland-Yutani deep-space research vessel USCSS Maginot in Alien: Earth, played by Michael Smiley. He worked under chief engineer Petrovitch with apprentice engineer Malachite, and he spent the final days of the voyage repairing systems while the ship burned fuel and lost containment. After Morrow ordered him to transfer engine function to the bridge, the escaped Trypanohyncha Ocellus took his left eye and drove his body. A Xenomorph killed that host body in the fight that followed, and the parasite left the corpse before the Maginot hit Earth.

Biography

Earlier Life

Before the Maginot left Earth, Shmuel was a married man with children. He was born sometime prior to 2055, the year the ship embarked on its sixty-five-year specimen mission. His wife was thirty-one years old when he signed on and departed. He knew that the cryo cycles would spare him most of those decades while she lived through them on Earth, and that she would look like his grandmother by the time he came home. During a break from cryo later in the voyage, the ship's cat Rascal wore a collar camera that caught him telling apprentice Malachite that those same years had left his children on Earth older than he was.

Aboard The USCSS Maginot

Shmuel joined the Maginot before its 2055 launch on a sixty-five-year specimen-collection mission for Weyland-Yutani. His jumpsuit carried a SHMUEL name tape, and he served as an engineer under chief engineer Petrovitch rather than as chief of the department. Over the long voyage he worked the ship's power and propulsion systems through repeated cryo cycles with the rest of the active crew. By the final approach to Earth he was one of the few engineers left awake to keep the Maginot running.

Four Months From Earth

In 2120, with about four months left to Earth, Shmuel woke with the changeover crew and ate in the Maginot mess hall. He tried to explain the corporate map of the solar system to Malachite, counting five companies that divided Earth and the outer colonies. He told the apprentice that their own employer, Weyland-Yutani, held North and South America. When Malachite guessed that the firm also held the Moon, executive officer Zoya Zaveri corrected him: Luna belonged to Dynamic, while Yutani held Mars and Saturn as well. When Captain RJ Dinsdale reported that the ship was burning too much fuel and asked for systems they could shut down, Shmuel offered a blunt answer: shoot scientist Chibuzo's specimens into space and shut down her zoo.

Executive officer Zoya Zaveri treated the idea as a joke and asked for real suggestions. Shmuel insisted he meant it and said the specimens gave him the creeps, and Malachite agreed. He went further and alleged that Weyland-Yutani put things in the crew's food to control their minds. Chief security officer Kumi Morrow cut the talk short and reminded the table that the specimens were the mission. Shmuel answered that the crew had lost a lot of good men collecting them, and Morrow warned him that he would post more security or restrict him to his quarters if he pushed the joke about harming the samples. Dinsdale went back into cryo and left Zaveri in charge of the waking crew for the rest of the approach.

Repairs And The Fuel Crisis

About seventeen days from Earth, a fire in containment fried navigational systems and engine relays and left the Maginot on a dangerous approach. Outside the medbay after the Facehugger attack on Dinsdale and Bronski, Shmuel asked Morrow why they had not simply put the creatures out the airlock. Shmuel and Malachite worked the engineering spaces while Morrow hunted for a saboteur and Zaveri took command after Dinsdale died. When a fuel-pod blast dropped reserves to about eight percent, Shmuel warned the bridge that the fuel would run out within twenty-four hours. He stayed on repair duty while Facehuggers, a growing Xenomorph, and the escaped Ocellus tore through the rest of the crew.

In the mess-hall emergency briefing after science officer Bronski died, Shmuel told Morrow to stop picking on Malachite when the apprentice ate through the meeting. He also muttered that Morrow had decided how the crisis would run. After Zaveri dismissed them, he told Malachite to grab a snack and leave him alone so he could get back to the open panels. The apprentice's illness soon pulled Shmuel back into the medbay crisis that killed Rahim, Chibuzo, and Malachite.

Shares And The Company

Before Malachite collapsed, the two engineers sat in a dark bay while Shmuel worked an open panel under twin headlamps. Malachite asked what Shmuel would do with his shares and guessed he would buy his wife something nice. Shmuel answered with the age gap the voyage had put between him and his wife, the loss described in his earlier life. He told the apprentice that the company was not paying them for the work itself but for sixty-five years of their lives, at the price of a quarter share, and that the same pitch would send a man out on another mission.

That talk framed the Maginot contract the way Shmuel understood it, as a long theft of ordinary life in exchange for company money. He went on repairing the ship anyway, because the alternative was letting the Maginot miss Earth entirely. Shortly afterward Malachite began vomiting blood and was taken to the medbay, where Species 19 ticks killed him along with Rahim and Chibuzo. Shmuel lost the apprentice he had been shielding through the fuel crisis and the specimen talk alike.

Engine Transfer

After the medbay deaths, Morrow took command from Zaveri and ordered the remaining crew to seal the bridge. He sent Shmuel to the engine room to transfer all function to the bridge and told Zaveri to go with him. The pair separated when a Xenomorph ambushed Zaveri outside the sealed medbay, and Shmuel reached the engineering spaces alone. That isolation left him in the path of the Ocellus that had escaped Chibuzo's lab earlier in the crisis, with no other engineer awake to cover the bay beside him.

Ocellus Possession

The Ocellus tore out Shmuel's left eye, seated itself in the socket, and overrode his nervous system. When Zaveri reached him while fleeing the Xenomorph, she called his name and asked where Morrow was. The puppeteered engineer did not help her seal the door. Instead he knocked her unconscious. From that point Shmuel no longer acted as a crewman. The parasite used his body as a host while the Xenomorph closed in on the same engineering corridor.

Death

When Zaveri woke, the Ocellus-driven body was fighting the Xenomorph in the engineering spaces. The parasite bit the creature and stayed in the struggle even after the Xenomorph impaled the host. Shmuel's body did not survive the fight. The Ocellus left the corpse and continued on its own before the Maginot hit Prodigy City. Morrow sealed himself inside the MU/TH/UR chamber and later reported that no other Maginot crew had lived to the crash.

Personality And Traits

Shmuel spoke bluntly about company priorities and did not hide his disgust for Chibuzo's specimens when Dinsdale asked for fuel-saving ideas. He protected Malachite in the mess hall when Morrow and Zaveri leaned on the apprentice, then turned sharp with the kid once they were alone. The food-and-mind remark in the mess hall fit the same distrust of Weyland-Yutani that later shaped his share talk in the bay. That share-and-wife talk showed a man who understood the Maginot contract as a theft of decades rather than as adventure, and who went on fixing the ship after that knowledge.

Shmuel stayed a working engineer to the end: headlamps on, panels open, following Morrow's engine-transfer order even after command had shifted away from Zaveri. The collar-camera talk with Malachite and the share talk in the bay both showed how little of his old Earth life he expected to reclaim after the voyage. The Ocellus erased that person when it took his eye. What fought the Xenomorph afterward was the parasite wearing his body, not the mentor who had sat with Malachite in the bay.

Behind The Scenes

Michael Smiley played Shmuel in the Alien: Earth episodes "Neverland" and "In Space, No One...". His Maginot costume used a visible SHMUEL name tape and engineer jumpsuit with headlamp goggles, which mark him on screen as engineering crew rather than as chief engineer. That role belonged to Petrovitch (Enzo Cilenti) in the same episodes. Smiley had earlier genre credits including The Hunger, Kill List, and roles in the Doctor Who universe, and he brought a dry, weary delivery to the Maginot mess-hall and engine-bay scenes.

Practical-effects supervisor Steve Painter later built a full Shmuel corpse for the Maginot wreckage sequences on Earth. Showrunner Noah Hawley asked on the day for the body to be torn in half and scattered, and Painter's team gored the halves in minutes while cameras were set. The halved corpse appears only briefly when Prodigy forces and the Lost Boys search the crash site, but it ties Shmuel's Maginot death to the wreck the series returns to after episode five.

Famous Quotes

  • "Why don't we just, uh... shoot Chibuzo's specimens into space and... shut down her little zoo?"
  • "It's a real suggestion. Those things give me the creeps."
  • "Stop picking on the kid."
  • "Kid, when I left, my wife was 31. She looks like my grandmother now."
  • "You'd think bureaucracy only exists on Earth, wouldn't you?"

Conclusion

Shmuel was the Maginot engineer who said out loud what the rest of the crew only feared: that the specimens were not worth the voyage. He mentored Malachite through corporate maps and share talk, held the engines together through sabotage and fuel loss, and lost both the apprentice and his own body before the ship reached Earth. T. Ocellus wore him into a fight with a Xenomorph, and the corpse left behind was one more cost of Weyland-Yutani's cargo-first mission.
