Kumi Morrow was the chief security officer of the USCSS Maginot in Alien: Earth, a cyborg in the service of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation whose orders came from the top of the company. He left Earth on a 65-year mission to collect alien life, lost his only daughter to a fire while he was gone, and came to see the specimens in the hold as the only thing he had left. In 2120 he let the rest of the Maginot crew die rather than lose the cargo, survived the crash in Prodigy City and spent the following days fighting Boy Kavalier for the creatures on behalf of Yutani.

Earlier Life

Morrow sitting on a beach at dusk beside his young daughter Estelle and a campfire in Alien: Earth

Morrow carried a Ghanaian name, which he would later share with a frightened hybrid boy as a gesture of trust. As a child he was a feral boy begging in the street, with a palsied arm that marked him out, when the grandmother of the later Yutani took him in for no reason he could ever name and called him the fiercest thing she had ever seen. He grew up in the service of the Yutani family, promised the old woman that he would bring her specimens home, and in time had his damaged arm replaced by a cybernetic prosthetic, the first of the machine parts that made him a cyborg.

Before he left Earth he spent an evening with his daughter Estelle on a beach at dusk, sitting beside a campfire as the waves came in. He pointed to a point of light in the sky and told her that was where he was going, and that whenever she missed him or wanted to talk she should look straight up, because he would always be there looking back at her. He told her to be good, since he would be watching, and decades later, alone in the Maginot's sleeping quarters, he returned to the memory with an old French song about the sea.

Estelle

The Weyland-Yutani telex informing Morrow of his daughter Estelle's death in Alien: Earth

Estelle was still a child when her father left, and she kept writing to him as the years passed, signing her letters to her Dadabear and passing on news of her mother. As she grew older she wrote that she had started looking at schools, that the company would pay if it was a Weyland-Yutani sanctioned school, and that she dreamed of an old-world college such as Harvard. Morrow kept the printed letters with him and read them again in his bunk during the voyage home.

In mission year 8 of 65 a telex from the company's OTC department reached the Maginot, addressed to Kumi Morrow as chief security officer. It told him that Estelle, then 19, had died in a fire that destroyed her home on the twelfth of April, and that her effects had been placed in storage for him to collect on his return in 53 years. The notice was signed by a company captain and offered nothing more, and with his daughter gone the company and its mission became the whole of Morrow's life.

The Maginot Mission

Aboard the Maginot, Morrow served under Captain RJ Dinsdale and executive officer Zoya Zaveri, but he answered to someone higher. He held code-word clearance and took his orders from Yutani herself, and those orders were simple: nothing mattered more than the cargo, not the officers, not the crew and not the ship's cat Rascal. The rest of the crew called him the cyborg behind his back and sometimes to his face.

About four months from Earth, at the last meal before the waking crew went back into cryo, the table joked that navigator Teng watched a sleeping crewmate at night. Morrow had already spoken to him, and he told the table that Teng would not be a problem unless he wanted to work 65 years for no pay. When the crew talked over the companies that ruled Earth and someone named Boy Kavalier of Prodigy, Morrow singled out the young trillionaire at once.

When the captain learned that communications were down and the log files corrupted, chief engineer Petrovich offered to look into it, but Morrow overruled him and said that security would investigate. Engineer Shmuel then suggested shooting science officer Chibuzo's specimens into space to save fuel and shutting down her little zoo. Morrow told him twice that the specimens were the mission, and asked whether he needed to post extra security or restrict Shmuel to his quarters.

The Containment Fire

Seventeen days from Earth, junior security officer Clem Madey shook Morrow out of hypersleep with an alarm blaring and news of a fire in the containment room. A Facehugger had attached itself to Captain Dinsdale and another to the science officer Bronski, and when doctor Rahim cut into the base of one creature's tail its acid blood killed the captain. Morrow walked into the medbay still in his underwear and cut through the arguing to ask what had started the fire and why the egg crates had been open.

He sent Clem with science officer Chibuzo to check that the rest of the zoo was secure, over Chibuzo's wish to stay with Bronski. Outside the medbay Shmuel told him to put both victims in the airlock, then explained that the fire had burned out the navigation systems and engine relays, so the Maginot was now a missile heading for Earth. A random fire in an empty room, in the one panel that controlled navigation and speed, convinced Morrow that he was dealing with incompetence or sabotage, and he did not believe it was incompetence.

On the bridge he told Zaveri, who had become acting captain, that she had been sleeping with Bronski against company policy and that her judgment was compromised. He reminded her that the security officer could take command if the acting captain was not doing everything needed to protect the ship, and when she protested that she was responsible for her people, he answered that he was responsible for getting the cargo back intact whether or not the crew survived. He then went to the engine room, told Shmuel and apprentice engineer Malachite that the saboteur was moving through the crawl spaces, demanded the ship's blueprints and threatened both men with the loss of their shares if they talked. Clem told him that someone had deleted the communications logs, and Morrow had him run a recovery program on them.

Hunting The Saboteur

A blast in the fuel pod left the Maginot with only 8 percent of its reserves, and soon afterward Mother reported a cryopod quarantine breach as the creature growing inside Bronski burst from him and escaped into the ship. Zaveri wanted to wake the rest of the crew and form search parties, but Morrow refused, saying that ten more people with feelings would only add to the trouble. Because the creature's acid blood could eat through the hull, he handed out electric non-lethal rounds and ordered everyone to fire until it hit the floor, capturing it rather than killing it.

At the crew briefing in the mess hall he told the survivors that one of them was trying to destroy the ship, demanded duty rosters and activity logs within the hour and announced that interviews would begin at once. From then on everyone was to travel in pairs, only he, Zaveri and Clem would carry guns, and anyone whose information led to an arrest would get an extra share. Malachite was the only one who answered yes.

In the interview room he told Rahim that he was sweating, accused him of calling home to sell out the ship, pointed to a ten-minute gap in the medbay cameras and asked whether anything would be missing from the pharmacy. The doctor protested that he had been sober for years and mocked him for being part machine. Morrow then turned on Teng, accusing him of still visiting the sleeping woman at night and of using the vents to reach the containment room, until the navigator told him that a cryopod logged as full was not always occupied. Morrow realized someone else was awake, and the recovered logs soon confirmed it with a recorded call between Petrovich and Boy Kavalier of the Prodigy Corporation, in which Petrovich agreed to crash the ship into Prodigy's territory in exchange for a new body.

In the medbay, Rahim opened up Malachite after the young engineer began vomiting blood, and found ticks lining his esophagus. Morrow urged Zaveri to stop the doctor, and when Rahim cut one free anyway he shouted to seal the room, which left Rahim, Chibuzo and Malachite dead inside. Clem then reported that something big had killed Teng, and Morrow took command, sending Zaveri with Shmuel to transfer engine control to the bridge while he and Clem went to wake the remaining crew.

The Fall Of The Maginot

Morrow standing inside the brightly lit Mother chamber of the Maginot in Alien: Earth

On the way to the cryo bay Morrow reminded Clem to use the electric rounds because they could not afford to hurt the specimens. Petrovich ambushed them in the corridor and shot Clem, and Morrow dragged the wounded man into cover before he died. Morrow caught Petrovich and drove his arm blade through the engineer, who told him that he could not stop what was coming, that they wanted their monsters, and that they were on their way.

Shmuel was taken over by the Ocellus, and Zaveri was left down and in danger as the Xenomorph born from Bronski hunted the corridors. Morrow sealed himself inside the Mother chamber and ignored Zaveri as she pounded on the door, begged him to let her in and called him an asshole, humming the old song from the beach while the creature killed her outside. With the crew dead, he asked Mother for the impact room and strapped himself in as the Maginot fell toward Earth.

The Crash

The Maginot crashed into a Prodigy tower in Prodigy City, New Siam, during the Founder's Day festival, killing and injuring thousands below. Morrow came through the impact alive and ordered Mother to alert Weyland headquarters that the ship had been boarded and the status of the cargo was unknown, then said he was moving to the armory to secure the site until reinforcements arrived.

Back in the lab he came up behind two Prodigy search-and-rescue soldiers, Hoyt and Anant, ordered their weapons and sidearms onto the floor and walked them back among the specimen tanks. He made one cuff the other to a pipe and then cuffed him in turn, ignored their offer to pretend it had never happened and demanded to know where Kavalier was. When the soldiers realized he was a cyborg, he reported to Mother that the lab specimens seemed intact, said he was moving to track the fugitives and told the man who called him brother that he was not.

Hunting The Specimens

Inside the wrecked tower Morrow tracked the escaped Xenomorph through the ruined apartments where it had slaughtered party guests, stunned it with the arc launcher of his rifle and sealed it in a cocoon for transport. When the Prodigy medic Hermit, who had been searching the floor, thanked him for the rescue, Morrow shot him with a stun round as well and left him lying beside the bodies.

Leaving the building with the cocooned creature in a bag, he was stopped at the elevator by a Prodigy tactical team led by Cortez and Brahma, who asked what he was carrying and pulled their guns when they saw his cybernetics. He told them they were making a mistake, warned them that he was the least of their problems and stayed calm while they cuffed his hands behind his back. The creature then revived and tore through the soldiers, and Morrow survived by staying completely still, telling them it could sense fear, until more troops arrived and drew it away.

Calling Home

Morrow holding a phone to his ear on a crowded street in Prodigy City in Alien: Earth

Morrow returned to the Maginot's cargo hold and plugged into Mother through ports at his temples, downloading the ship's data and erasing it from the source as Prodigy's hybrids watched. When he forced the hybrid boy Slightly against the wall and demanded to know when a machine is not a machine, Prodigy's synthetic chief of security Kirsh arrived and told him the ship now belonged to Prodigy, like a ball hit over a fence into a neighbor's yard. Morrow refused to talk to an errand boy, warned that the cargo belonged to Yutani and that the creatures would end up owning anyone who was careless, and later slipped through the Prodigy cordon unseen.

From a crowded street in Prodigy City he called Weyland-Yutani with security code 871 and the key word Falcon, and asked for Yutani on the strength of his code-word clearance. The woman who answered was the granddaughter of the Yutani he had known, and she told him it had been 65 years, that she ran the enterprise now, and asked where her creatures were. He told her they had been captured but that he had the data, that the ship had been sabotaged and that he could see a way to get them back. When she told him to come home, he answered that he had no home, that everyone he knew was dead and that the creatures were his life's work, and promised to recover them.

Slightly

Morrow lit by blue light as he speaks to Slightly over a hidden transmitter in Alien: Earth

During the confrontation in the hold, the boys had let slip that they believed they had parents, and Morrow worked out that Prodigy's synthetic bodies held the minds of children. When Kirsh read out his file as chief of security, sole survivor and cyborg, and asked whether he had lost many friends, Morrow said he had none, and Slightly told him that everybody needs friends. Before the cordon closed, Morrow planted a small tracking and communication disc on the boy.

That night he spoke to Slightly through the disc in his room on Neverland, apologizing for scaring him and saying he had now solved the riddle of how a synthetic being could have parents. He told the boy that he had once been a father, that he had a little girl, and that she had hated raisins. He then repeated Slightly's own line about everybody needing a friend, asked the boy to be his friend until he agreed, and wished him goodnight.

Leverage

In later calls Morrow asked Slightly to bring him one of the monster eggs, and when the boy said that would be stealing, he asked how anyone could steal from a thief and called it restitution. To win the boy's trust he told him his own name, Kumi Morrow, and learned in return that Slightly had been born Aarush Singh. He explained the three wise monkeys on the boy's wall, asked whether Slightly would report him if he did something evil, and told him that being an adult was a constant test.

When Slightly called back to say he could not betray his friends, Morrow revealed that he was sitting with the boy's mother, who believed her son was dead and whose other sons would soon be coming home. He told Slightly to sneak a person into the lab instead of sneaking an egg out, let the hatchling take the victim's face, hide the body somewhere quiet for a day or two and call him when the creature fell off. He then put the weeping mother on the line, gave the boy 24 hours and reminded him that he had once said he would do anything to protect his parents.

Return To Yutani

Morrow went in to see Yutani, who asked whether anyone else had survived and whether the cargo had come through, and he told her the crew had died before the crash but the specimens were intact. She told him that her grandmother had been very fond of him, and he said that he had promised the old woman to bring the specimens home and that he would, and then he would kill the one called Kavalier. When Yutani said Kavalier had agreed to arbitration and that the lawyers might settle the matter, Morrow answered that unless lawyers meant soldiers, they would have to do it his way.

Arbitration Meeting

The next morning Morrow stood behind Yutani at the binding arbitration hearing with Boy Kavalier, chaired by Barrister McAfee on behalf of The Five, while Kirsh stood behind his own employer. Yutani argued that the Maginot and everything aboard belonged to Weyland-Yutani, and Kavalier answered that the crash had destroyed three blocks of his city and might have been an attack or criminal negligence, making him the one who had to investigate.

Kavalier accused Weyland-Yutani of smuggling predatory alien species onto Earth in breach of intercorporate law, and Yutani called the creatures proprietary specimens meant for an off-planet research facility. She raised her offer for his pain and suffering until they settled on 20 billion dollars, only for Kavalier to announce that he would return the specimens after the six-week off-world quarantine set by the Brubaker Accord. Yutani offered 50 billion for immediate possession, Kavalier refused, and the hearing ended with Prodigy keeping the creatures.

When the room cleared, Yutani asked Morrow where things stood, and he told her he could have one of the Xenomorphs by the end of the day through a recruited asset, though the plan could easily fail. Prodigy had greatly increased its security on the island in the past day, most likely expecting a frontal assault, so he recommended destabilizing the facility and slipping out in the chaos. In the elevator afterward he and Kirsh mocked each other as machines, Morrow boasting that synthetics felt no pain when he cut them apart and Kirsh answering that pain was what made it satisfying with cyborgs, the moment the first eyeball popped.

Back on Neverland, Morrow pressed Slightly through the disc as the boy tried to lead Hermit to the eggs, a plan interrupted when the soldier Rashidi pulled Hermit away for patrol. When Slightly said he could not get anyone into the lab, Morrow asked whether he wanted to say goodbye to his mother before she died. Slightly then left the scientist Arthur Sylvia locked in the lab with the eggs, and Arthur was facehugged.

The Raid On Neverland

Morrow came ashore on Neverland through a sea cave with a Weyland-Yutani strike team, reporting landfall and ordering his men to infiltrate, stay low and shoot to kill. He found Slightly waiting with Smee beside the hollow corpse of Arthur Sylvia, from which the chestburster had already escaped, and scolded the boy for bringing a friend when he had been told to come alone. As Slightly sobbed that everything had gone wrong and that nobody had warned him about a second monster, Morrow told him to stop acting like a child and that grown-ups owned up to their mistakes.

He refused to answer the boy's pleas about his mother, ordered his men to bring both hybrids and reported that the first target had failed and that he was moving to the second. Inside the facility, however, his team ran into Kirsh and a wall of Prodigy soldiers. Morrow and his men were told to drop their weapons and taunted as sore losers, and when he warned that this was not over, Kirsh answered that nothing ever was before the prisoners were locked up and the two boys were grounded.

Captured

Morrow smiling from his cell on Neverland as he talks to Hermit in Alien: Earth

With the island's undersea trunk line cut, which Prodigy blamed on the cyborg, and Yutani jamming the satellites, Kavalier refused to hand him back, saying Morrow had come to kill them all and steal their toys. Morrow was held in a cell beside Hermit, who had been jailed after trying to leave the island.

When Hermit asked whether he had really been aboard the ship when it crashed, Morrow called it a yesterday conversation and said he never looked back. He insisted he had saved Hermit's life when he shot him, asked about the lung that Prodigy had replaced, revealing that Aarush had told him, and asked whether it felt good to be more than human. When the corporation gave something, he said, there was always a price, and when Hermit guessed that it was everything, Morrow laughed that everything did not begin to cover it.

Later he asked the guard for a Cohiba cigar, then complained that he needed to pee and could not unzip himself, drawing the man close enough to overpower him. As Hermit pulled him off the guard and said he would save the ones he could, Morrow told him to save the children, because he was going to burn the place to the ground.

Fight With Kirsh

Morrow bloodied and lit from below during his fight with Kirsh in the Neverland lab in Alien: Earth

Morrow made his way to the lab where the specimens were kept and found Kirsh working there alone. The two fought hand to hand among the benches and specimen tanks, trading blows that left Morrow bloodied and Kirsh sprawled across the floor. Standing over the synthetic, Morrow told him the story of John Henry, who drove steel all night with his hammers to prove a man could dig deeper and faster than a machine, and said that in the end man would always win because it was a question of will.

Kirsh pointed out that John Henry had died of exhaustion, and Morrow answered that he was only getting started. He announced that the troops of Yutani the younger were already on their way and that he was reclaiming on her behalf what was rightfully theirs, and glass shattered across the lab as the fight went on.

The Last Stand

Both fighters were left on the floor, Kirsh badly damaged and Morrow unable to rise. When Slightly and Smee arrived, Kirsh asked where they had been ten minutes earlier and told them to tie up the cyborg before he came round. Instead the boys turned on Kirsh as well, binding the adults and telling them that their time was done and that it was their time now.

As Slightly stood over him, Morrow told the boy that he had never hurt his mother, the first sign that the threats he had used for days were empty. With Yutani's forces closing on the island, Morrow ended the fight he had promised Yutani's grandmother as one more adult prisoner of the Lost Boys.

Personality And Traits

Morrow was cold, patient and utterly loyal to the company, a man who measured every life aboard the Maginot against the value of the cargo and found the lives wanting. He sealed Zaveri outside a door while she begged to be let in, sealed three shipmates in a poisoned medbay and threatened to have a boy's mother killed, yet he spoke to that boy in the soft, teasing voice of a father, wishing him goodnight and warning him about the bed bugs.

Much of his hardness came out of grief. The loss of Estelle left him with no home to return to, and when Yutani told him to come home he answered that everyone he knew was dead. He filled the gap with the company and the creatures, and with the old French song he hummed when he thought of the beach, even as Zaveri died on the other side of the door. He refused to dwell on the past, treating every betrayal as a yesterday conversation.

He liked riddles and moral lessons, and he used them as weapons, turning restitution, loyalty and the three wise monkeys into arguments for why a child should help him steal. He held a deep contempt for synthetics, mocking Kirsh as an obsolete machine and boasting that they felt nothing when he cut them apart, and he saw in his own surviving flesh the thing that made him better than Prodigy's creations. That pride drove his story of John Henry and his belief that a man would always outlast a machine through will.

Abilities And Cybernetics

Morrow with data cables running from the ports at his temples to the Maginot computer in Alien: Earth

Morrow's cybernetic arm replaced the palsied limb of his childhood and housed a set of built-in tools, including a retractable blade, a cutting torch and a launcher for the small tracking and communication discs he planted on others. He used the blade to kill Petrovich in the Maginot's corridors, and the disc he hid on Slightly let him follow the boy to Neverland and speak into his ear for days.

Ports at his temples let him connect directly to computers, which allowed him to download the Maginot's data into his own head and wipe the ship's systems clean before Prodigy could reach them. He was stronger and more durable than an ordinary man, surviving the crash in the impact room and trading blows with Kirsh, a Prodigy synthetic, until both were on the floor. Prodigy's soldiers recognized his cybernetics at a glance, and Rahim taunted him as part machine.

He carried a sidearm and a rifle fitted with an arc launcher that could stun a Xenomorph and seal it in a cocoon for capture, and aboard the Maginot he issued electric non-lethal rounds so the crew could stop the creatures without spilling their acid. Just as important were his clearance and his ruthlessness, which let him take command of a ship, lead a strike team onto Neverland and manipulate a frightened hybrid boy with the same calm.

Behind The Scenes

Morrow was played by British actor Babou Ceesay, who first encountered the Xenomorph as a young person growing up in Africa. The official FX biography described the character as a stone-cold tough bastard for whom, after losing his daughter, the company had become his life's mission. That daughter, Estelle, was played by Ceesay's real daughter, Haddy Ceesay, after showrunner Noah Hawley asked to cast her while the production was filming in Thailand, so the beach scene between father and daughter was played by a real father and daughter.

The first and fifth episodes were meant to be filmed together, but the strikes delayed the fifth, which Hawley wrote and directed himself. To prepare, Ceesay studied the cyborg artist Neil Harbisson, who perceives colour through sound, and Hawley told him to play Morrow as a man first and a machine second. Ceesay came to describe Morrow as a kind of ronin, a figure in a calm state of dark enlightenment, and in interviews he explained the logic of the impact room and Morrow's loyalty to Yutani. Some press coverage reported that Estelle died of an incurable disease, but the telex shown in the series states that she died in a fire.

Conclusion

Morrow was the Weyland-Yutani cyborg who came home from a 65-year voyage with nothing left but the company and its creatures. He outlived his crew by sealing them out, hunted the specimens across Prodigy City and Neverland, and ended his war against Prodigy bound on a lab floor by the children he had tried to use.
