RJ Dinsdale was the captain and commanding officer of the Weyland-Yutani deep-space research vessel USCSS Maginot in Alien: Earth, played by Tanapol Chuksrida. He led the ship through the last stretch of its sixty-five-year specimen-collection voyage, and four months from Earth he warned the waking crew that comms were down, the logs were corrupted, and fuel was running out. Seventeen days from Earth in 2120 he was first into a burning containment room, where an escaped Facehugger seized him. He died when doctor Rahim cut into the creature and its acid blood spilled over him, and executive officer Zoya Zaveri took command.

Biography

Earlier Life

RJ Dinsdale was born some time before 2055, the year the Maginot left Earth on its long Weyland-Yutani mission to find and collect extraterrestrial life. He served as the ship's captain, with Zaveri as his executive officer and the cybernetic Morrow running security. The crew rotated through stasis in changeovers across the decades, and by the return leg several of their number had already been lost collecting the specimens. Little else about his life before the voyage is recorded.

Aboard The USCSS Maginot

Four months from Earth, the changeover crew gathered in the mess hall while navigator Teng confirmed the distance to Earth's orbit. Asked whether he was all right, Dinsdale laid out the problems: "Comms are down. Looks like the log files are corrupted." Chief engineer Petrovich offered to take a look, but Morrow said security would investigate. Dinsdale added that the ship was burning far too much fuel and told Zaveri, "I want you and Teng looking into what system we can shut down."

The request set off an argument at the table. Engineer Shmuel suggested shooting science officer Chibuzo's specimens into space and shutting down her zoo, and apprentice Malachite agreed the creatures gave him the creeps. Morrow shut the idea down, insisting that the specimens were the mission. Before returning to cryo, Dinsdale left Zaveri in charge of the waking crew with the instruction "Wake me on final approach." Unknown to him, the comms failure and corrupted logs were the work of Petrovich, who was sabotaging the ship from within.

Fire & Facehugging

Seventeen days from Earth, an alarm sounded over a fire in the containment room. Dinsdale got there first and put the fire out, with science officer Bronski right behind him. Two of the containment pods had been opened, and the eggs inside had already hatched. The fire and the opened egg containers were no accident: Petrovich had set the specimens loose himself. The hatched Facehuggers latched onto both men, and one clamped itself over the captain's face.

Medlab & Death

Junior security officer Clem Madey had the captain and Bronski moved to the medbay. He then woke Morrow with the news that "they got Captain Dinsdale and Bronski." In the medbay Rahim tried to pull the creature off Dinsdale, but its tail was wrapped tightly around his throat.

"I tried to remove the creature, but the grip on his throat was quite tight," Rahim told Morrow. He made an incision at the base of the tail, and the Facehugger's acid blood poured over the captain and killed him. The deadly result left the crew unable to free Bronski the same way, so he was frozen in cryo with the parasite still attached.

Burial In Space

With the captain dead, Zaveri took charge in the medbay and ordered Teng to help Rahim prep Dinsdale's body for burial in space. She then logged a formal GR30 command change with the ship's computer MU/TH/UR: "Dinsdale, RJ is deceased. Executive Officer Zoya Zaveri has taken command." While preparing the body, Rahim apologized to the captain: "Sorry, Captain. My bad. It should've been me." Dinsdale's remains were committed to space, so his body was not aboard when the Maginot later crashed into Prodigy City in New Siam.

His death did not end the danger he had walked into. The embryo planted in Bronski matured into a Xenomorph, the saboteur Petrovich kept working against the crew, and within days nearly everyone aboard was dead. Only Morrow survived the ship's fall to Earth.

Personality And Traits

Dinsdale came across as a calm, practical commander who gave the crew the bad news plainly. He listed the ship's failures without drama, handed the fuel problem to his executive officer and navigator, and let security take the comms investigation. When the alarm went off seventeen days from Earth he did not wait for anyone else, reaching the fire first and putting it out himself. That instinct to act cost him his life when the opened egg pods released their Facehuggers.

Behind The Scenes

Tanapol Chuksrida played Captain Dinsdale in Alien: Earth. Dinsdale appears alive in the Maginot mess-hall opening of the first episode, "Neverland," where he briefs the crew about the comms, logs, and fuel. In the fifth episode, "In Space, No One...", which revisits the Maginot's final days, he is seen only as a body, with the Facehugger still on him in the medbay. The images on this page are taken from those two episodes.

Famous Quotes

  • "Comms are down. Looks like the log files are corrupted."
  • "We're also burning way too much fuel."
  • "I want you and Teng looking into what system we can shut down."
  • "Wake me on final approach."

Conclusion

RJ Dinsdale commanded the Maginot through the final leg of its long specimen hunt and was the first to spot that something was wrong with the ship. He flagged the dead comms, corrupted logs, and fuel loss, but the saboteur behind them was sitting at his own table. When containment burned he ran in first, and a Facehugger and its acid blood ended his command seventeen days from Earth. His death put Zaveri in the captain's chair and opened the crisis that destroyed the Maginot crew.
