Aliens: Aftermath: Plot, Characters & Lore
Aliens: Aftermath was a Marvel Comics one-shot written by Benjamin Percy and drawn by Dave Wachter, with colors by Christopher Sotomayor. Marvel released it on July 14, 2021 for the thirty-fifth anniversary of Aliens. The story followed the extremist journalism crew Renegade XM to LV-426 in 2214, where they searched the bombed ruins of Hadley's Hope for the truth Weyland-Yutani had erased. An irradiated Xenomorph hunted them through the colony, and a cryostasis colonist labeled Subject Zero still carried an unborn chestburster.
Plot Summary
The Midland Station Raid
In 2214, the radical journalism outfit Renegade XM hit a Weyland-Yutani fuelling station and fled with a stolen data drive as the facility went up behind them. Cutter Vasquez led the broadcast crew, and he treated the blast as proof that the company could still be hurt on camera. Pilot Drake got the ship clear while Woody Ballesteros and Lela Rosewood scrambled into their seats. The drive pointed them toward a moon the corporation had wiped from public records after the loss of Hadley's Hope.
Cutter told their feed that he was the nephew of Colonial Marine Jenette Vasquez and claimed kinship with the Vasquez family. Jenette's mission on Acheron had been erased from company files. He framed the raid as the opening act of a hunt for that missing history, and he sold the crew on following the drive wherever it led. The others argued about risk and damage to the ship, but they stayed with him. Renegade XM set course for LV-426 under the cover of the destroyed station's silence.
Landing On LV-426
The ship came down through a nuclear winter that had settled over LV-426 after the atmosphere processor detonated decades earlier. Snow buried wreckage and rock alike, and the crew sealed into pressure suits before they opened the ramp. Cutter, Lela, and Woody stepped out into the storm while Drake stayed with the damaged craft to work on repairs. Radiation warnings ran through their suit telemetry as they took their first steps away from the landing site.
Cutter pushed the group toward the colony coordinates pulled from the stolen drive and kept the cameras rolling for the Renegade feed. Woody protested the exposure and the cold, but he followed with the recording kit. Lela checked suit integrity and radiation levels as they crossed the ice. Behind them, Drake kept working alone on the hull while the storm closed the horizon.
Hadley's Hope In Nuclear Winter
The three explorers reached the shattered shell of Hadley's Hope, where a buried colony sign still named the site under drifted snow. Twisted towers and collapsed modules marked what the atmosphere-processor blast had left after the 2179 infestation. Cutter called the destruction a forty-megaton annihilation and treated the ruins as the proof Weyland-Yutani had tried to bury. They entered through a broken exterior hatch and switched to helmet lamps in the dark.
Inside they found skeletal remains of Xenomorphs among the Marine and colonist wreckage, and Cutter recovered a smartgun marked with Jenette's call sign. Woody wanted to leave once the radiation and the corpses stacked up, but Cutter kept them moving deeper for footage and answers. Lela located a terminal that might still hold colony records if they could force power into the old mainframe. Outside, Drake's repair work ended when an unseen attacker killed him at the ship and left his body in the snow.
Exploring The Colony
Deeper inside the wreck, the crew moved through corridors where resin had fused to bulkheads and pipes until the colony walls looked grown rather than built. Helmet lamps picked out ribbed secretions and dark shapes locked in the pale crust, including a Xenomorph body embedded in the hive material as if the structure had sealed around it. Cutter kept the cameras rolling while the group argued about how far to push into the dead station. One of them called for Woody when the camera operator fell out of sight among the resin tunnels.
Lela and Cutter traded sharp words about whether they should have left Woody on the ship, then treated his silence as proof he was still fine farther down the passage. The hive wall answered with only frost, hanging cables, and the wet gleam of old secretions under their lamps. They kept searching the fused chambers for a working terminal and for any record the company had left behind. The colony interior had become a burial shell, and every step took them farther from the open snow and closer to whatever still lived in the dark.
Mother And The Colony Logs
Lela forced power into the colony computer and brought up MU-TH-UR 7000, the local Mother system that still answered requests after the meltdown. A blue holographic attendant appeared and asked for their query while Cutter searched the wreckage with Jenette's recovered weapon in hand. He asked Mother for records on Carter Burke and for anything that explained who had died in the hive and who had been taken alive. The system answered with a file on Subject Zero, one of the original colonists and the first known infection at Hadley's Hope.
Mother reported that the company had ordered the implanted colonist frozen to preserve the threat rather than kill the host. Cutter took that answer as confirmation that Weyland-Yutani had kept a living sample under the ruins the whole time. Woody filmed the exchange for the Renegade feed while Lela scrolled the security log backward from shutdown. The floor under Woody then gave way into a buried sublevel, and he fell through rotten decking into the dark.
The Irradiated Xenomorph
Cutter tethered down to help Woody while Lela held the upper deck and kept Mother online. Below them the sublevels were stacked colony modules buried to protect sensitive storage, now overgrown with resin and wreckage. Woody answered the radio in pain and stayed conscious enough to keep his camera running. Cutter left him secured and pushed farther into the dark after the Subject Zero coordinates Mother had given.
On the upper deck a translucent, bioluminescent Xenomorph dropped from the pipes onto Lela. Radiation from the old blast had left the creature glowing through its own skeleton, and its blood behaved like liquid nitrogen when it spilled. Lela fired into the attack as the creature closed, and Mother's voice continued to answer queries about Subject Zero over the fight. The irradiated hunter drove her back from the terminal and cut her off from Cutter and Woody below.
The Death Of Lela Rosewood
Lela put rounds into the glowing creature and watched its cryogenic blood freeze her suited arm solid on contact. The limb shattered when she struck a surface, and the irradiated Xenomorph pressed the attack before she could reload. She had already understood Mother's report that the company had frozen the first host to keep the specimen intact. The creature finished her on the colony deck while Cutter was still below and Woody was still trapped in the hole.
Gunfire from the fight reached Cutter as muffled reports through the decks, and Woody called up that he had heard the shots. Cutter did not climb back for Lela. He kept moving toward the cryostasis chamber Mother had flagged, treating Subject Zero as the only prize that still justified the raid. The irradiated hunter left Lela's body and began hunting the remaining crew through the ruined colony.
The Patient Zero Pod
Cutter found the cryostasis pod of Subject Zero nested in resin-coated sublevels beneath the colony, with a pale colonist still sealed behind frosted glass. The chamber matched Mother's file on the first known infection at Hadley's Hope. Cutter told Woody that the Extrasolar Colonization Administration had contacted him after the Midland raid and had traded the colony's coordinates for delivery of that frozen host. He winched the pod upward and treated the recovery as the real job behind Renegade XM's broadcast.
A holographic woman then appeared and revealed herself as Ms. Yutani of the Yutani family, who had watched them since Cutter plugged the fuelling-station drive into their ship. She offered to double the Extrasolar pay and wipe Cutter's criminal record if he handed Subject Zero to Weyland-Yutani instead. She also claimed company control of their vessel and warned that they would not leave LV-426 without her terms. Cutter cut his suit camera and answered that the show was over while he kept the pod moving.
The End Of Renegade XM
The irradiated Xenomorph returned as Cutter hauled Subject Zero clear, and Yutani's hologram warned that his claim of being death-proof was about to be tested. Cutter opened fire with a pulse rifle, and the glowing creature came through the rounds without falling. Stray fire severed the pod's tether and dropped the chamber back beside Woody in the hole. The irradiated hunter killed Cutter before he could finish the extraction or accept Yutani's bargain.
Woody crawled to the fallen cryostasis pod and checked the colonist for life as company observers cut the Renegade feed from a boardroom. Ms. Yutani ended the transmission when a board member complained about the loss, and she rejected the word. Inside the pod a heartbeat answered Woody's hand, then a chestburster tore out of Subject Zero. Renegade XM was finished on LV-426, and the specimen the company had frozen in 2179 was free again in 2214.
Key Characters
- Cutter Vasquez led Renegade XM and claimed Jenette Vasquez as his aunt. He traded the Midland Station data for Extrasolar's Subject Zero contract, rejected Yutani's counteroffer on camera cutoff, and died under the irradiated Xenomorph while hauling the cryostasis pod.
- Lela Rosewood restored power to Mother at Hadley's Hope and learned that Subject Zero had been frozen on company orders. The irradiated Xenomorph's cryogenic blood froze and shattered her arm before the creature killed her on the upper deck.
- Woody Ballesteros filmed the expedition for the Renegade feed, fell through rotten decking into the sublevels, and was still alive beside the fallen pod when the chestburster erupted from Subject Zero.
- Drake piloted the Renegade ship away from Midland Station and stayed behind on LV-426 to repair the craft. An unseen irradiated attacker killed him at the landing site while the others entered the colony.
- Ms. Yutani appeared as a hologram after Cutter plugged the stolen drive into the ship. She offered to double Extrasolar's pay and clear his record for delivery of Subject Zero, then cut the feed from a Weyland-Yutani boardroom when the crew died.
- Subject Zero was the cryostasis colonist Mother named as the first known infection at Hadley's Hope. Cutter recovered the pod under Extrasolar orders, gunfire dropped it beside Woody, and a chestburster later tore free from the host.
- The irradiated Xenomorph was a bioluminescent adult that bled freezing fluid and hunted Renegade XM through the ruins. It killed Drake and Lela, then killed Cutter during the Subject Zero extraction.
Editions
Marvel Comics published Aliens: Aftermath as a forty-page one-shot on July 14, 2021. Benjamin Percy wrote the issue, and Dave Wachter drew it. Christopher Sotomayor colored the pages, Ariana Maher of Virtual Calligraphy lettered them, and Jake Thomas edited the book. Phil Noto painted the main cover, with variant covers by Dave Wachter with Neeraj Menon and by Ron Lim with Israel Silva. Jay Bowen designed the issue, and C.B. Cebulski was editor in chief.
The one-shot shipped as the first Marvel comic to use the plural Aliens title and the first Marvel Alien release to carry a subtitle on the cover. In Marvel's Alien line it ran concurrently with Alien: Bloodlines and was followed by Alien: Revival. Twentieth Century Studios held the copyright notice for the 2021 printing.
Behind The Scenes
Marvel timed Aliens: Aftermath to the thirty-fifth anniversary of the 1986 film Aliens, and the story returned directly to the ruined colony that film left behind. Publisher materials framed Renegade XM as investigative journalists willing to die for the truth Weyland-Yutani had wiped from its records. The comic placed the expedition in 2214, thirty-five years after the fall of Hadley's Hope in 2179. Percy's script kept a claimed link into the Vasquez family at the center of the broadcast crew's motive for entering the radiation zone.
Inside the one-shot, Subject Zero is only the cryostasis colonist Mother names as the first known infection at Hadley's Hope. Later franchise accounts outside the comic identify that colonist with Russ Jorden, one of the original Hadley's Hope colonists. Sources such as Alien: River of Pain treat Russ as dying soon after implantation in 2179, with the chestburster leaving his body in that earlier timeline. Aftermath instead keeps Subject Zero frozen until 2214, so the chestburster erupts for Woody at the end of the one-shot, and that later Russ identification remains an outside reading rather than a claim the comic states on the page.
Conclusion
Aliens: Aftermath was Marvel's 2021 Aliens one-shot by Benjamin Percy and Dave Wachter that sent Renegade XM into the nuclear winter of Hadley's Hope. Cutter Vasquez used a stolen company drive to reach LV-426, recovered Jenette's smartgun, and learned from Mother that Subject Zero still waited in cryostasis. An irradiated Xenomorph killed Drake, Lela, and Cutter during the raid, Yutani watched the feed fail from a boardroom, and a chestburster tore free from the fallen Patient Zero pod beside Woody Ballesteros.
