Cutter Vasquez was the leader of the extremist journalism crew Renegade XM in Marvel's Aliens: Aftermath, a 2021 one-shot set in 2214. He claimed kinship with Colonial Marine Jenette Vasquez and treated the scrubbed records of her LV-426 drop as unfinished family business. After blowing a Weyland-Yutani fuelling station he took Renegade XM into the nuclear winter over Hadley's Hope, recovered Jenette's smartgun, and died in a mutual last stand with an irradiated Xenomorph.
Biography
Earlier Life
V. Castro's novel Aliens: Vasquez places Cutter inside the wider Vasquez family before the comic ever puts him on camera. He was the son of Sandro Vasquez and Blanca, Jenette's brother and sister-in-law. Sandro and Blanca died off-world, and Roseanna kept their photograph on the household altar with the rest of the dead. Their eight-year-old son Cutter survived that loss and was still somewhere in space when the novel's Texas ranch chapters catch up with the family left behind.
That book background never spells out how the boy grew into the Renegade XM leader of 2214, but it locks the bloodline: Cutter is Jenette's nephew through Sandro, not a cousin invented for the comic alone. Later family talk in the novel treats "Cutter's family" as one of the traps the next generation should avoid, which fits a bloodline already marked by off-world deaths and company contracts. By the time Aliens: Aftermath opens, Cutter sells that kinship on the Renegade feed and carries Jenette's motto as the crew's line: El riesgo siempre vive - the risk always lives.
Midland Station Sabotage
In 2214 Cutter led Renegade XM onto a Weyland-Yutani fuelling station that served as a hub for three systems. On the Renegade feed he mocked the company's press release that branded the crew terrorists and cowards, then set a short countdown and blew the station while cameras rolled. The blast was the opening act of the broadcast, proof that the corporation could still be hurt on air, and the stolen data drive pulled from the raid became the map for everything that followed.
Pilot Drake got the ship clear of the fireball while Cutter celebrated the hit and kept the feed hot. The drive pointed them toward a moon Weyland-Yutani had wiped from public records after the loss of Hadley's Hope. Cutter framed the Midland sabotage as the first beat of a hunt for that missing history, sold the crew on following the coordinates, and set course for LV-426 under the cover of the destroyed station's silence. After the raid the Extrasolar Colonization Administration also contacted him and traded those colony coordinates for a second job: recover the frozen colonist later labeled Subject Zero.
Return To Hadley's Hope
Renegade XM put down in the ash snow that still covered the colony decades after the 2179 atmosphere-processor blast. Drake stayed with the damaged ship while Cutter, Lela Rosewood, and Woody Ballesteros pushed into the ruins in sealed suits. Cutter kept the cameras rolling through resin-coated corridors, Marine and colonist wreckage, and the skeletal remains of Xenomorphs left in the blast's wake.
Jenette's Smartgun
Among that wreckage he recovered Jenette's smartgun and treated the find as proof that her lost drop still had a physical trail the company had tried to erase.
Lela brought the colony mainframe back online, and a blue holographic attendant answered their queries while Cutter searched with Jenette's weapon in hand. He asked after Carter Burke and the scrubbed Marine mission; Mother pointed them toward Subject Zero, the first known infection at Hadley's Hope, still sealed in cryostasis under the ruins. Woody fell through rotten decking into the sublevels, Cutter tethered down to help him, and Lela held the upper deck alone. An unseen irradiated attacker had already killed Drake at the landing site, and the same glowing adult soon dropped on Lela, froze her suited arm with cryogenic blood, and finished her before Cutter climbed back.
Subject Zero And Yutani
Cutter did not turn back for Lela. He kept moving toward the cryostasis chamber Mother had flagged, treating Subject Zero as the prize that still justified the Midland raid and the Extrasolar contract behind the broadcast. He winched the frozen colonist clear of the resin sublevels and told Woody that Extrasolar had bought the colony coordinates in exchange for that delivery. When he plugged the stolen Midland drive into the ship earlier, a holographic Ms. Yutani of the Yutani family had already begun watching the feed; she returned as he hauled the pod and offered to double Extrasolar's pay and wipe his criminal record if he handed Subject Zero to Weyland-Yutani instead.
Cutter cut his suit camera and answered that the show was over while he kept the pod moving. He rejected the company buyout the same way he had framed the Midland blast: the suits did not get to rewrite the ending on their terms. Yutani warned that his claim of being death-proof was about to be tested, and the irradiated hunter came through the dark on cue.
Last Stand
Cutter opened fire with a pulse rifle as the glowing adult leapt through the rounds. Cryogenic blood sprayed from the hits, stray fire severed the pod's tether and dropped the chamber back beside Woody, and the creature still closed the gap. At point-blank range the hunter cracked Cutter's helmet and pressed in for the kill.
Cutter jammed the rifle into the creature's torso and shouted that if he died, it died with him, then fired into its body. The comic leaves both figures in that clinch, and their deaths are the clear outcome of the exchange. Woody reached the fallen pod as company observers cut the Renegade feed from a boardroom, and a living chestburster erupted from Subject Zero while Renegade XM ended on LV-426.
Personality And Traits
Cutter was a showman first: he ran Renegade XM as a live broadcast, narrated his own crimes to the camera, and framed the Midland sabotage as a strike against "the suits" rather than a theft. His politics were anti-corporate to the point of extremism, and he was willing to destroy a working fuelling station to make Weyland-Yutani look vulnerable on air.
Family was the other pillar of his identity. Raised on the story of an aunt who died on LV-426 and whose record the company scrubbed, he used Jenette's name and her motto El riesgo siempre vive as the crew's banner, and recovering her ADIOS-marked smartgun mattered to him as inheritance, not just footage.
That idealism sat beside a ruthless, mercenary streak. He kept the paid Extrasolar contract for Subject Zero from his own crew, left Lela to the irradiated hunter rather than abandon the pod, and still refused Ms. Yutani's doubled pay and clean record out of spite for the company. In a fight he was capable and fearless, holding his ground with a pulse rifle against the irradiated Xenomorph and choosing a mutual kill over retreat.
Behind The Scenes
Marvel published Aliens: Aftermath on July 14, 2021 as a thirty-fifth-anniversary one-shot for Aliens, written by Benjamin Percy and drawn by Dave Wachter. Percy's script puts a claimed Vasquez family link at the center of Renegade XM's motive for entering the irradiated colony, and Cutter's on-feed line about his tía Jenette carries the crew motto El riesgo siempre vive. Castro's Aliens: Vasquez novel, published the following year, fills the earlier generation around Sandro, Blanca, and the boy Cutter without retelling the Midland raid or the LV-426 last stand.
Conclusion
Cutter Vasquez was the Renegade XM leader who sabotaged Midland Station, carried Jenette Vasquez's name into the nuclear winter over Hadley's Hope, and died trading fire with an irradiated Xenomorph while Subject Zero's chestburster still lived. The novel gives him a place in the family altar; the comic spends that inheritance on camera until the feed cuts out.
