Aliens: Vasquez is a 2022 novel by V. Castro, published by Titan Books on 25 October 2022 in the UK and 8 November 2022 in the US. It followed Jenette Vasquez from a Los Angeles childhood through a prison-to-Corps contract, then jumped to the twins she had to give up, Leticia and Ramón. Their later paths met on the secret Weyland-Yutani world Olinka, also called E2, where company science and a mutilated Queen named La Reina turned Jacob Vickers's planned colony into a hive.

Novel Overview

Castro follows two generations. The first stretch stays with Jenette through 2166, her 2171 Marine evaluation, and the 2179 tunnel fight from Aliens, where she dies with a pistol and a grenade instead of the M56 Smartgun she carried in the film. After her death the novel follows sister Roseanna on a Texas ranch, then the twins as adults: Leticia into the Colonial Marines and Ramón into Weyland-Yutani. Those threads close on Olinka in 2201, twenty-two years after Jenette died on LV-426.

Aliens: Bug Hunt later put Vasquez on earlier jobs with Apone's people, including the toxic moon Clytemnestra, in the years between the 2171 evaluation and the Sulaco drop.

In 2171, recruit Jenette Vasquez entered a ten-minute pit test against a six-foot-one android. She wore her grandfather Seraphin's red bandana and her mother's gold cross, and she carried a pulse rifle into a pit already set for rubber-bullet fire, heat, then simulated rain and strobes. She lost the rifle, wounded the android's hand, and finished it with a non-issued switchblade in the belly and throat, then tore the neck cables out until a robotic voice named her the victor. An officer scolded the blade, issued a USCM patch, and told her the Corps was her family now.

Los Angeles And The Outbreak

In 2166, Jenette was still in Los Angeles. Father Pablo was a foreman and tech liaison at an android factory. Mother Francisca wanted a quinceañera Jenette refused. Grandfather Seraphin kept a garden and the family line that already ran through the Corps, including great-great-uncle Roland and his Vietnam Purple Heart. Sisters Roseanna and Carmen and brother Sandro completed the household before a flesh-eating outbreak tore it apart.

Weyland-Yutani held a vaccine and sent it first to people leaving for valuable colonies. Pablo and Seraphin went to hospital and did not come back. Roseanna, a nurse, crashed after extra shifts and pills, then spent weeks in a coma. Francisca hid one stolen dose, forced Jenette to take it, and died two days later under a comforter with Pablo's pillow and a rosary. Carmen and Sandro were already off-world in the Early Learners Terraforming Program. Assets went to Roseanna, who could not take Jenette, so foster care came next.

Foster parents Timothy and Hazel Hall could not keep her off the street. Jenette mixed with Las Calaveras through Liberty Love, P-Wee, and Neto, still a future member rather than a full one. On her sixteenth birthday a raid killed an officer and a neighborhood kid. Officer Jason shoved his gun into her hands and later claimed she had fired both shots. A closed hearing treated her as directionless for refusing to inform on the gang. She went to a mixed juvenile prison.

Prison And The Twins

Cellmate Daisy Paxton tattooed the single teardrop by Jenette's eye, ink rather than a kill mark. Guard Hanson loaded extra weight on her in the gym. Mark Drake, a skinny blond with a scar at the left eye, lifted with her every day and stayed her closest friend. A lawyer later brought a prison-to-Corps contract, paid per completed signature, with release at eighteen after a basic physical. Daisy's MS genetics kept her out. Drake took the same offer, and they left together.

At a bar called The Rooster she spent one night with recruit Lorenzo Sanchez, who was about to ship for two years in cryo. A routine drug test showed she was pregnant with twins. A judge gave her a day: keep the pregnancy and lose parental rights, or end it, with sterilization either way and the government claiming placenta, womb, and eggs if she carried to term. Roseanna offered to take the babies. Jenette signed the rights away, finished the first trimester with her class, spent the rest of the pregnancy in the armory, and was already back in barracks when Roseanna collected Leticia and Ramón in California. Contact after pickup was banned. Lorenzo later died in one of the wars.

Last Stand On LV-426

In 2179, Jenette backed through a colony tunnel after Ripley and Newt, pulse rifle empty, then a pistol. A Warrior dropped from above. She pinned it with her boot and emptied the pistol until acid blood burned through her ankle. Lieutenant Gorman grabbed her under both arms, shot at a Warrior coming through a metal wall, and pulled a grenade when more closed from every side. She put her hand over his, and they detonated together. Her last thought was Roseanna, Ramón, and Leticia. News of that death reached the Texas ranch before the twins turned ten.

Roseanna And The Twins

Roseanna woke from the coma, learned Francisca was dead, and later bought three acres a few hours north of the restored Gulf of Mexico from Black vaquero Robert Boone. A metal rod held her right leg. The crash left her unable to carry children of her own. She became a counselor, stayed sober, and raised the twins on equal terms. Sandro and his wife Blanca died in space. Their son Cutter survived, still off-world and eight years old when Roseanna next put him on the family altar.

Just before the twins' seventeenth birthdays, Ramón rejected the Día de los Muertos altar and called Jenette's life a stereotype. Leticia fought a shop assistant at Pleasanton Mall after a racist slur and a false theft claim, then went home to Jenette's letter years early. The letter left the soldadera line, a switchblade, and an order to look after Ramón. Leticia tattooed her mother's face and El riesgo siempre vive on her left arm, then learned to shoot on Boone's horse ranch. She shot a thief in the left foot twice after he taped Boone's daughter Lucinda in a far barn. Avery Boone wanted her to stay and farm. She wanted the Raider Regiment instead.

Ramón At Weyland-Yutani

In 2190, Ramón was at Harvard, tall and careful with his teeth after Roseanna's dentist work. He kept banker Mary Anne Kramer and Julia Yutani at the same time. Julia wanted no children and a life building worlds. Mary Anne wanted a quiet house. Recruiter Benjamin Ross pulled Ramón onto a classified bioweapon project tied to Meredith Vickers's unnamed planet, then showed vault footage of mutilated La Reina laying an egg. Ramón asked for a whiteboard and a signing bonus that paid off Roseanna's mortgage by midnight. Ross later died in a bathtub with cocaine in his nose.

Ramón's plan stored eggs or infected hosts on worlds the company wanted, then used bacteria as a kill switch and unmanned Grim Reaper ships for delivery. Julia wrote it up. He married Mary Anne, had twins Lara Jenette and Lorenzo, and became Weyland-Yutani's youngest chief financial officer while still treating Julia as the real partner. When she demanded a commitment, he asked her to take his children as a stepmother and leave Mary Anne as the public wife.

Leticia In The Corps

Leticia enlisted in 2190 at a new depot outside Fairfax, South Carolina, after rising seas swallowed the old Parris Island site. Drill sergeant Mercy ran thirteen weeks of basic. Recruits Frida, Mohammed Faez, Nathan Powell, and Desiree Benson stayed with her as a later Raider crew they called Las Lobas. The Crucible lasted fifty-four hours. Mercy recommended all five for Raider training. Ramón skipped graduation.

In 2195, Leticia's team reclaimed three abandoned nuclear submarines from pirates on a United Americas Arctic island and guided them toward Alaska. She bought time on a Narwhal jet-ski analog until a rocket hit the craft. A white wolf pack later killed a pirate who had followed her into a snow forest. A later promotion test in a swamp went to rival Melissa Haas after Leticia's Narwhal died in the water and partner Desiree was locked in a blind decoy with no orders. Colonel Smith cited Jenette's record against Leticia and treated the dead Narwhal as unproven sabotage. Haas's father was an ex-major general in private security for Weyland-Yutani. Leticia started night classes and resignation paperwork.

Ramón then offered her a contractor security job under CEO Jacob Vickers, Meredith's British great-grandson, who wanted a low-profile force for colony Olinka. Jacob talked about a borderless geothermal settlement named from Gerardo Murillo's old utopian-city idea, plus a later lottery for ordinary Earth families. He did not know about the Xenomorph program. Leticia took the job if her crew was paid. Frida, Mohammed, Nathan, and Desiree accepted. Ramón went as well. Cryo to Olinka lasted five years. Roseanna was almost sixty when they left.

Olinka And The Outbreak

Julia reached Olinka One first. Scientist Dr. Brenda Moon had perfected a necrotizing bacteria meant to beat Xenomorph immune systems, plus tapeworm hybrids the lab called Xenosites. Three queens had slept for years, grown horns from skull cylinders, and thickened their inner jaws. Julia forbade killing them, ordered frozen-egg grenades, and ran an unauthorized human trial. Recruited colonist Dylan Graves swallowed a fake protection vial, sampled a pulsing egg, and took a Facehugger through the mask. He was one of five infected hosts.

In 2201, Leticia's survey crew of fifteen woke near the sulfur fields and pine forest. Jacob named her director of security. Ramón warned her not to sleep with him. She did anyway, after he brought rum to her tent and talked about a secret lottery once the planet was safe. Dylan then escaped the pen, freed other prisoners, and stole a dropship. He reached the survey camp in a medical robe, asked for help, and chestbursted. Leticia shot the newborn in the head. Two adult Xenomorphs followed. One tail-speared a scientist. The team shot that adult apart, and acid burned Frida's left arm. The second cut Nathan in half through his flamethrower before massed fire dropped it.

Ramón admitted Julia was inside the pyramid, that Colonial Marines were two days out, and that the Xenomorph program predated Jacob and funded the peace colony. Jacob meant to force Ramón out after the crisis. Overnight he showed Leticia the files: Jenette had died neutralizing a threat on LV-426. He had wanted to own the thing that killed her.

Las Lobas, Ramón, and Jacob flew to the resin-hived facility. They found Facehuggers in cylinders, Xenosites in water, and handheld vials of the black bacteria. One Queen already lay dead with her hood blown from the inside by the electrical crown. Julia was still alive in the wall beside Brenda. She warned that they had destroyed only one Queen, that Yutani already had a plan, and that Jacob would take the blame. She then chestbursted. Leticia shot her four times and killed the newborn. Ramón handed Jacob activated bacteria and a chip with the formulas, then copied Julia's files to Leticia's backups.

Frida died on a grenade with a Xenomorph after throwing timed charges into cocoons. In the vents a remaining Queen spat acid, grabbed Mohammed, and died when Leticia shot her to pulp. Mohammed sank in the acid. A Xenomorph then rose from a flooded chamber and tail-speared Ramón through the chest. Desiree shot through his forehead and hit the creature. Leticia cut him off the tail, dragged the body out, and later cremated him. Some of the ash went into the sea from a rum bottle, for the boat he had called Sail La Vie. She kept the rest for letters to Lara Jenette and Lorenzo.

Major Haas was already in orbit on hidden orders. She apologized for the stolen promotion, then bombed the pyramid at first light after two more adults tripped sensor mines. A third emerged as evolved La Reina: hood, horn-crown, missing lower jaw, spike-legs, and a barbed mandible. Leticia hit her with a Narwhal grenade, then a harpoon through the chest, and dragged her toward the sulfur fields. A gas and mud eruption charred the Queen and pulled her under. Survivors went to the Marine ship. Leticia built a small altar, began carving a wooden club lined with Xenomorph teeth, and cut the family phrase plus the dead names into a kept skull. Jacob chose to leave Weyland-Yutani, close Olinka, keep the planet, and hunt other Xenomorph sites with the bacteria rather than glass a homeworld. Leticia, Jacob, and Desiree were still alive in orbit in 2201.

The Vasquez Family

Castro keeps the name going through Roseanna, the twins, and nephew Cutter, Sandro and Blanca's son. Carmen stayed off-world in the Early Learners program. Dark Horse's Aliens: Colonial Marines comic later made her a Marine on the USS Melville. Aliens: Aftermath treats Cutter as Jenette's cousin instead of her nephew and sends him back to LV-426 in 2214.

Drake was gym partner and best friend, not a lover and not the twins' father. Lorenzo Sanchez was the one-night father and later died in the wars. Ramón named a son Lorenzo anyway, then built a public marriage with Mary Anne while stacking a Yutani future with Julia. Leticia took the Marine path, then the Olinka contract, and was the twin still standing when the pyramid came down.

La Reina And The Lab

Meredith Vickers had started terraforming the world, kept it off the LV list, and disappeared before she could use it as a private kingdom. Dr. Brenda Moon, with a Guyana family and time at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Diseases, ran weapons biology there for a Weyland faction that later groomed Jacob. The lab mixed necrotizing fasciitis with a black mold, then built a toothed parasite from pork tapeworm. They killed a young Xenomorph with a rolling orange-sized sphere that sprayed bacterial shot, then mutilated an infant Queen.

La Reina was one of three Queens. Five plastic-lined cylinders went into her skull so chips could release bacteria. The team burned off her lower jaw, cut the tail, cut the hands, and took the legs at the knees, leaving her to lay eggs. Years later the amputations grew barbs, the inner mandible thickened, and the cylinders became horns. Julia wanted the grown specimens kept alive. Brenda wanted them killed. One crown later blew a Queen hood from the inside. The evolved La Reina that crawled out after the bombing was the last of that line.

Confirmed Xenomorph Kills

Jenette pistol-killed one Warrior in the 2179 tunnels before the grenade. The lab later killed a young Xenomorph with the bacterial sphere, and test chestbursters died in hosts. One Queen was already crown-dead when Leticia's team entered Olinka One.

On the 2201 camp pad, Leticia headshot Dylan's chestburster. The crew shot the first adult to pieces after it killed an unnamed scientist, then burned and shot the second after it cut Nathan in half. Inside the pyramid Leticia killed Julia's chestburster, Frida died with one adult on a grenade, and Leticia shot the tunnel Queen after it killed Mohammed. Desiree killed the adult that had speared Ramón by firing through his head. Haas's ships and sensor mines took more on the pyramid overnight. Leticia finished evolved La Reina with a harpoon and a sulfur-field eruption.

In 2179, Vasquez is wounded in a colony tunnel after Ripley and Newt, Gorman comes back, and they detonate a grenade with her hand on his. The acid burn goes through her ankle, and her last thought is Roseanna and the twins. Years later, Ramón's company files called that job a small-colony neutralization on LV-426.

Castro writes that fight as a colony on LV-426, with the Sulaco and Hadley's Hope left unnamed. Hudson, Hicks, Apone, Burke, Bishop, Ferro, and Spunkmeyer stay with the film unit. Drake belongs to Jenette's Earth and training years, not to the processor ambush. Colonel Smith later used Jenette's "nasty track record" against Leticia, while still treating the 2179 death as a clean one.

Place In The Titan Line

Titan released Vasquez after Aliens: Phalanx and Aliens: Infiltrator, as a standalone character novel rather than a game prequel or a lost-colony war book. On 5 November 2024 the publisher bundled all three as The Complete Aliens Collection: Living Nightmares, a 912-page omnibus. Castro's acknowledgements credit Christopher Golden for the email intro to Titan and editor Steve Saffel, the same editor who had already steered Golden's River of Pain and Ochse's Infiltrator.

Editions And Adaptations

Titan's hardcover landed on 25 October 2022 in the UK and 8 November 2022 in the US at 432 pages. A trade paperback followed on 24 October 2023. The 2024 Living Nightmares omnibus reprints the text with Phalanx and Infiltrator.

Blackstone Publishing released an unabridged audiobook on 8 November 2022, the same day as the US hardcover. Lauren Rodriguez reads the English edition in 11 hours and 29 minutes.

Behind The Scenes

Castro is a Mexican American writer from San Antonio who lives in the UK. In an Axios interview she pitched the book after thinking about how much weight Vasquez carried in a short role, and that she wanted a brown Marine who was not written as a domestic worker, farm worker, or gangbanger. The soldadera line and Santa Muerte tattoos in the later chapters come from that pitch. Entertainment Weekly ran the cover reveal ahead of the October UK date.
