Alien: Cult: Novel Plot, Characters & Lore
Alien: Cult is a 2025 novel by Gavin G. Smith, published by Titan Books on 25 November 2025 in the United Kingdom and 30 December 2025 in the United States. It followed FBI Special Agent Tyler Matterton and his synthetic partner Serena from a serial-killer raid in Missouri to missing people under Hume City on Alexandria Colony, then to the cattle town Steer City on Gamma Leporis 3. The Church of Biotechnological Transcendence worshipped a Xenomorph Queen they called the Goddess, Weyland-Yutani tried to move infected cattle off the world, and Tyler and Serena wrecked the heavy-lift shuttle rather than let the creature leave.
Plot Summary
Special Agent Tyler Matterton worked for the FBI Esoteric Crimes Unit, the office that took murders involving strange technology or possible first contact. His partner was Serena, a synthetic built to look like an unassuming professional. After they closed the Credence Greco case on Earth, they spent a month in hypersleep on the passage from Gateway Station to Alexandria Colony. Detective Second Class Jean Hoyle, Tyler's classmate from Quantico and later a detective with Hume City Serious Crimes, had asked him to come.
The Raid On Greco's Missouri Bunker
Tyler had spent months tracking Greco, an Earth serial killer who hid in a rewilded military bunker in a Missouri swamp. A surviving abduction victim finally described the old motor-pool site, and the FBI Hostage Rescue Team went in at night with pulse carbines, Tyler and Serena walking behind the armored entry squad. Scratch-built sentry rifles opened on the teams first. Inside, the movement came from corpses Greco had wired through the skull and jointed with homemade servos, some of them only partly preserved. Tyler almost shot one of those bodies before Serena pushed his muzzle down.
HRT took Greco alive on his knees in the old motor pool, a small dirty man who apologized while the armored agents held him. Tyler stood over him with the sidearm up until Serena pulled the gun out of his hand. A month later he woke screaming in a hypersleep tube on the passage from Gateway, with Serena opening the hatch over him.
Jean At Buchanan Memorial
Jean met them at Buchanan Memorial aerospace port in a rumpled suit, looking older around the eyes than she had at Quantico. She flew a worn gyrocar from the financial towers down into the dark under the raised roads. She had left the Bureau when the Independent Core System Colonies were buying Earth investigators, and Hume City paid better than federal work. Rank ate the high-profile files, so she had almost no forensics, analytics, or extra bodies unless she paid for them herself.
Maggie And The Strip
People vanished off the Strip in Exhaust Town all the time, and Hume City police would not spend money on missing people from the undercity. A colleague who had pushed that pattern had been killed. Jean took them for a beer off the Strip and laid out what she had. A homeless woman named Maggie, who slept in a nearby alley and had been talking about the new disappearances, had gone missing nine days earlier. Street bosses were spooked because they could not account for the extra bodies. There was no organized camera coverage down there, and almost nobody would talk to police. Tyler and Serena could only advise as an inter-agency courtesy, with no local warrant of their own.
Heaven, Luscious, And The Snell Match
They worked the Strip the old way. Jean's contact the Bish, a damaged android who ran sex work there, had counted twelve disappearances on a tightening clock. Jean pistol-whipped him when he stalled, and a scrap of his flesh later jammed the slide of her gun.
The trail went through Heaven, a shanty packed into the gutted first-colony ship under the port, then to Luscious, a street surgeon who built illegal body mods. Luscious had fitted their man with a hydraulic secondary mouth, pale subdermal armor, and solid black eyes. Hume City files did not have that new face. Serena enhanced Luscious's footage and matched the skull to an old promo still of Darius Snell, an Alexandria native who had failed as a commercial dreamer, gone out to the Frontier, and come home changed.
Snell's Resin Lair At Resinable Printing
The basement at Resinable Printing sat under a wall of sampled screams and the thrum of hidden printers. Tar pictures of a many-limbed goddess covered the walls, and the rooms were lined with resin the way a hive is lined. Living captives were set into that resin with drip lines, monitor bracelets, and liquid sacs fused to their stomachs. Those sacs were not Xenomorph eggs. Snell had been trying to grow Tanakan scorpionids, desert arthropods, inside human hosts.
Jean checked one woman for a pulse, then stepped back onto a sac, burst it, and a half-formed scorpionid spilled out. Tyler shot the creature twice. Snell, rebuilt and dressed in black, came out of the dark, knocked Jean's jammed gun away, lifted her off the floor, and drove the steel secondary mouth into her face.
The Exhaust Vent At The Port
Serena pulled Jean free and shoved the attacker back. Tyler chased Snell into the aerospace port, where a second figure threw him into a service chasm. He climbed out and found Snell down in an exhaust vent that should have been locked. Two pale Bio-Ts from Anchorpoint Station stood over the body with a restricted lock hacker, refused arrest, and walked into shuttle exhaust until they burned. Tyler got out with acid and fire scars. Jean survived three reconstructive operations, with a fourth booked, and she stayed on Alexandria while Tyler and Serena left the colony.
Marshal Stock And The Cattle Town
Colonial Marshal Cassandra Stock ran Steer City on the cattle world Gamma Leporis 3, a basin town between the Telemark and Johannsen ranges. Chisholm Meats, owned by Lasalle Bionational, was squeezing independent ranchers, and Cass had spent years fighting that pressure with a thin deputy roster. She found Harvey Jermaine's dust shelter smashed flat, then broke up a bar fight at the Stagecoach between the cowboys Teddy and Lance and silent white-skinned church members who would not speak. Town cameras had also picked up a bearded man and a wiry woman walking the streets around the marshal office.
Cass Admits She Hid Snell
Tyler and Serena spent about six weeks in hypersleep on the passage to Gamma Leporis 3, with Tyler dreaming the resin rooms whenever he was not in a commercial dreamscape. They went straight to the marshal when they landed, burn scars visible at Tyler's collar, and he introduced Serena as his investigative synthetic. Cass put them in a noisy room over a bar and treated the Hume City report as sloppy work until Serena read her face.
Then she admitted what the file left out. She had sheltered Snell in Steer City for weeks after he fled the local church, then paid his passage back to Alexandria. That choice put her in the chain that led to Jean's maiming and the Strip dead. Serena also flagged that Bio-Ts with a lock hacker that good had money or a company behind them.
Recruits In The Old Slaughterhouse
The Church of Biotechnological Transcendence occupied the old Chisholm slaughterhouse and the genetics building across a bridge on Port Street. Inside the slaughterhouse stood a statue of an Engineer head. The public face was Dawkins, a talking administrator among mostly silent Bio-Ts, hairless people with chalk-white skin, black eyes, and rebuilt muscle. He denied that the church worshipped a goddess, and he treated the recruits as people who never left the world.
Lace, Harris, And Brother Dak
The couple on the cameras were Herbert Lace, a cult deprogrammer, and Harris, an extraction specialist with a Royal Marine past. They had come for Matthew Fitzgerald, the son of Seegson board-level parents, who had taken the name Brother Dak inside the church. Lace and Harris counted about a hundred recruits a year and only about a dozen Bio-Ts visible on the street. A Lasalle Bionational incinerator on the genetics roof ran every night, and face matches showed the missing recruits becoming Bio-Ts or ash.
Tyler and Cass walked the church as ordinary visitors while Dawkins talked through Engineer lore and the public rooms. Fitzgerald was halfway through the change, one eye a black pit, a syringe of blue protein in his hand. Serena saw organic hypersleep pods through a gap the tour was not meant to show.
The Night Raid On The Genetics Facility
That night Tyler and Harris blew a welded fire exit and went into the genetics floors. They found live rib-cage surgery on a Bio-T, a chamber of egg-like pods, and a Chisholm manifest that sent live cattle toward the Union of Progressive Peoples world New Kiev. Church copies of Serena's model tried to stop the extraction. The team got Fitzgerald into a prairie rover and ran for Harvey Jermaine's ranch.
The Failed Extraction At The Ranch
Bio-Ts hit the ranch in the dark and killed with secondary mouths built into their rebuilt faces. Lace died first, then Fitzgerald and Harvey, while the others fought their way out of a house that was coming apart around them. Acid from the fight burned Tyler a second time.
Senior Deputy Sorgram arrived with a Chisholm posse, arrested Tyler and Serena on the spot, and later proved to be the leak that had pointed the church at the ranch. Serena's programming had made her treat Sorgram as the senior peace officer, which was how the church got the tip. Cass hid in the scrub and watched a second church squad strip the dead Bio-Ts and burn Harvey's house after the arrest.
Cass Loses The Star
Judge Khan and Chisholm general counsel Regina Charters stripped Cass of the star and put Sorgram in her place. Charters framed the company's interest as legal work and left the dirty end to church members and later to a Weyland-Yutani cleanup team. Cass and Harris took the marshal office back at gunpoint as the storm closed in, left Sorgram cuffed to a desk, and put deputies Amsa and Williams on the station cameras.
The Cattle Drive And The Broken Tank
A category-four dust storm closed on Steer City the same night Weyland-Yutani security troops landed in APE suits with Dog Catcher incinerators. Chisholm drove two land trains of live cattle down Port Street toward the heavy-lift shuttle, a run forced early by the raid and the cleanup.
Inside the slaughterhouse the team found empty leathery egg pods around the Engineer bust and Fitzgerald's corpse mounted on it. The Goddess had been held in a bioreactor in the genetics building, in a spiral membranous egg sac, and the Company attack broke that tank. She was a physical animal, not a vision: a crowned eyeless head on a long neck, mantis legs, clawed arms, and a pike-spike tail.
Dawkins And The Noxhydria Plan
Dawkins was on the floor in the storm after gouging out his own eyes when the Goddess rejected him. He treated Weyland-Yutani money as a slush fund that had never understood the religion, because the Company wanted eggs and stronger soldiers while the church wanted a sacrament. Adherents had moved the eggs into the Engineer chamber so cattle could be walked past the parasites Dawkins called Manumala Noxhydria, the church name for Facehugger-like bearers, then shipped out as a bioweapon load toward New Kiev. Harris wanted Dawkins shot, and Cass stopped her.
Harris Dies On Port Street
On Port Street the Noxhydria were on cow heads, finger-legs gripping hide and tubes in mouths, while Company shooters died in the stampede and the gunfight. The Goddess came out of the dust, threw a hover ATV, and tore Harris in two with her tail. Tyler used a dying incinerator and the panicked herd to shove cattle up the shuttle ramp into a hold stacked with cow-sized hypersleep pods.
The Fuel Dump Over Steer City
Serena started the engines while Tyler shot the Goddess from the ramp at long range. The rounds did not stop her as she tore through the cargo door, then the elevator cage, then the cockpit bulkhead, acid blood smoking through the metal as she climbed. Tyler made the co-pilot seat five stories up, looking out over dust-shrouded Steer City, with the creature hammering the door behind them. Serena shut down every failsafe that would have stopped a fuel dump, took his hand, and dumped the shuttle's entire fuel load into the running engines.
Cass In The Wreck
Cass had gone down in the street during the fight, then reloaded her revolver and shotgun and forced herself north, using the shotgun as a cane. The sound of the shuttle lighting off made her pick up the pace, and she never heard the blast itself. The shock wave lifted her off her feet, and she woke farther down Port Street with the shuttle port a crater, the north end of town a smoking ruin, and blackened cattle plastered across the street and the buildings. Ash and embers came down on her while she lay in the dust.
One live cow just outside the blast radius had a Noxhydria wrapped around its head, the lung-like organs no longer moving. The spent parasite dropped away, the tube sliding out of the cow's mouth. The cow shook its head and stood up in the ash.
Alexandria And Gamma Leporis 3
Alexandria Colony was an ICSC Core city at the southern pole, with a financial district in Hume City and a slum under the port. Buchanan Memorial aerospace port sat in a reused Weyland-Yutani atmosphere processor. Gyrocar traffic and sealed towers stood over Exhaust Town, which the locals also called Hades. A gutted first-colony hull in that undercity was used as a shanty called Heaven.
Gamma Leporis 3 was a dry frontier cattle world under a trinary sky. Steer City sat in a basin at the mouth of Wyrm Pass, with streets radiating from the shuttle pad like spokes. Heavy-lift shuttles fed an orbital station nicknamed the Meat Locker. Coldstream was a Chisholm station up the land-train road. Off-duty Colonial Marines drank in town from nearby Camp Rodriguez. The church's sealed deliveries came through Anchorpoint Station.
Confirmed Xenomorph Kills
The Goddess was the only adult Xenomorph shown on the loose in Steer City. She tore Harris in two during the dust storm. Tyler emptied magazines into her on the shuttle ramp and in the elevator, and the wounds did not stop her.
The Noxhydria fastened onto cattle rather than killing them on the spot, because the church plan was to implant the herd bound for New Kiev. One dead bearer fell off a live cow after the shuttle blast, and no Chestburster emerged from those hosts. The Strip dead in Hume City came from Snell's scorpionid project and the Bio-T cleanup, not from a Xenomorph hive. The inner-mouth killings of Lace, Fitzgerald, and Harvey Jermaine were Bio-T attacks.
Key Characters
- Tyler Matterton was an FBI Esoteric Crimes Unit agent sent after strange tech and possible first-contact murders. He carried the Greco raid into the Hume City case, then into Steer City, and sat in the shuttle cockpit when Serena dumped the fuel.
- Serena was Tyler's designed synthetic partner. She stopped him shooting Greco, pulled Jean off Snell, and shut down the shuttle failsafes so the fuel dump could wreck the Goddess with the ship.
- Jean Hoyle was a Detective Second Class in Hume City Serious Crimes and Tyler's Quantico classmate. Snell's steel secondary mouth destroyed her face. She survived on Alexandria and did not travel to Gamma Leporis 3.
- Cassandra Stock was Steer City's colonial marshal, a former Colonial Marine sniper in her fifties. She had hidden Snell, lost her star to Sorgram, then survived the shuttle blast and watched a parasitized cow stand up in the dust.
- Credence Greco was the Earth serial killer in the Missouri bunker. HRT took him alive.
- Darius Snell was an Alexandria commercial-dreamer failure who joined the church, fled back home, and built the resin lair. He died in a Buchanan Memorial exhaust vent before two Bio-Ts burned themselves in the exhaust.
- Dawkins was the church's human spokesman. He survived the storm after cutting out his own eyes, and Cass kept Harris from executing him.
- Matthew Fitzgerald, also called Brother Dak, was the Seegson recruit Lace and Harris came to pull out. A Bio-T inner mouth killed him at Harvey Jermaine's ranch.
- Herbert Lace was the cult deprogrammer on that extraction. A Bio-T inner mouth killed him in the same ranch fight.
- Harris was Lace's extraction partner, an ex-Royal Marine hired to take Fitzgerald out of the church. The Goddess tore her in two in the Steer City storm.
- Harvey Jermaine was an independent rancher and Cass's friend. A Bio-T killed him in his house, and the church burned the ranch afterward.
- Regina Charters was Chisholm Meats general counsel and a former Weyland-Yutani biotech lawyer. She left Steer City by executive VTOL during the storm.
- Sorgram was Cass's senior deputy and a Chisholm asset. Cass disarmed him during the storm and left him cuffed to the marshal-office desk.
- Judge Khan backed Charters and the church cover, including the release of a jailed Bio-T. He was not in the Steer City storm.
- Amsa and Williams were junior deputies who stayed on the station cameras when Cass went into the storm.
- Teddy and Lance were Chisholm cowboys. Cass beat them in the Stagecoach fight and left them injured.
Place In The Titan Line
Titan released David Barnett's Alien: Colony War and Philippa Ballantine's Alien: Inferno's Fall in 2022, then Mary SanGiovanni's Alien: Enemy of My Enemy in 2023, all set in the 2180s. Brendan Deneen's Alien: Uncivil War landed on 30 July 2024 as a standalone after Alien: Resurrection. Ballantine and Clara Carija's Alien: Seventh Circle followed in January 2025 and stayed with the Jackals. Shaun Hamill's Alien: Perfect Organisms landed in October and November 2025 as a standalone on DSJ-1020. Cult came out later that year as another standalone, a crime story on Alexandria and Gamma Leporis 3 rather than a numbered sequel to that run.
Continuity
Only the Greco raid is on Earth, in a rewilded Missouri swamp, with the FBI working out of Quantico and sending people through Gateway. The rest of the novel is off-world, first on Alexandria Colony and then on Gamma Leporis 3. The novel never prints a calendar year. Dawkins puts the story almost eighty years after the failed USCSS Covenant and Affiance colony missions, with humanity stuck inside about twenty parsecs of Sol except for a Hyperdyne mine in the Hyades Cluster. On the film dates that is the early 2180s, after Aliens and Alien 3, but the book never names those films or prints 2179. Dawkins also leans on Shaw and Holloway and on Engineer progenitor stories from Prometheus.
Weyland-Yutani is a living company here, with a slush fund, a cleanup team, and a reused atmosphere processor on Alexandria, not the post-Resurrection loyalist cult in Uncivil War. Lasalle Bionational owns the meat operation and competes with that company. The parasites are Facehugger-like and are given the church name Manumala Noxhydria. The Hume City resin rooms are Snell's scorpionid work, not a second hive.
The church title Goddess is their name for that Queen, not the dream-entity Woman in the Dark from Marvel's Alien: Bloodlines. She sat on an external egg sac, and the slaughterhouse held ovomorphs. The church had been in Steer City about three years, took monthly sealed loads from Anchorpoint Station, and kept her in the genetics-lab tank on Weyland-Yutani money.
Darius Snell's commercial dreamer work is the same paid freezer-dream trade from Alan Dean Foster's Alien. Foster put Ellen Ripley closest to that talent on the Nostromo, and wrote that she would have been a good prodreamer.
Behind The Scenes
Gavin G. Smith had written Veteran and War in Heaven, the Age of Scorpio books, the Bastard Legion series, and Spec Ops Z, plus the Bloodshot novelization and Marvel's Original Sin. He had also done games work for Yoozoo, Ubisoft, DPS, and CCP. Daquan Cadogan, Steve Saffel, and George Sandison edited the Titan manuscript, and Kevin Eddy proofread it.
