Alien: Seventh Circle: Novel Plot, Characters & Lore

Alien: Seventh Circle is a 2025 novel by Philippa Ballantine, published by Titan Books on 7 January 2025, from a story with Clara Carija. It followed the Jackals after the pathogen strike on Shānmén in Alien: Inferno's Fall, as Colonel Zula Hendricks chased the Engineer Juggernaut that had dumped Black Goo there. The trail led to the Weyland-Yutani station Minos over the ice world Dimitar. The synthetic Mae Hendricks lost her memory in the wreck, then helped crash Minos and get the last Jackals off the planet.

Plot Summary

After Pylos, the Atlatl-class Righteous Fury tracked the Shānmén bomber by a leftover signal, not a lock. A scarred Bishop named Rook finished that hull in the UAEV Blackstar and handed Zula a disc from Blue Marsalis that pointed at Minos. A three-team raid on the station and the planet failed, with Green Team dead in command, Blue Team dead in vacuum, and Red Team trapped on Dimitar for weeks.

Mae and Rook left in the Blackstar with orders to reach the three generals, then were shot out of the fight. The scavenger family on the Eumenides pulled Mae from a cryo pod with her memory gone and took her to Guelph Station, where Combine synth hunters called Extraktors grabbed her. She bargained them back to Minos and sent Lenny Pope to restart the elevator. Red Mae died blowing the planet hive mouth so Zula's last six could climb. Rook held the station on a crash course, and the Fury pulled free with proof discs and the cryo pods still to collect.

The Fury Chases The Bomber

Zula stayed awake on the Fury after Pylos, on stims and coffee, while the regular Jackals slept in deep cryo. She had factory-reset the ship AI EWA and its body Erynis so they would not remember that Mae was synthetic, which also cut Mae off the ship network and left her running panels by hand. Major Ronny Yoo and Lieutenant Gabriella Rossi came out of light stasis when the chase closed.

They followed residue the Shānmén miners had recorded, staying outside their own long-range lock. Mae faked engine trouble with a shield flicker, dumped barrels, and detonated missiles, then the horseshoe ship threw rock with gravitational singularities and stripped metal instead of using a magnetic shield. Railguns holed some of the hull. The Fury lost two dropships, took breaches on the port hangar and decks nineteen and twenty, and kept its cryo pods. The nearest world, Plutarch II, was too hot and heavy for a landing.

The Blackstar Saves The Fury

A mid-sized black arrow ship cut between the Fury and the bomber and finished the juggernaut. Rook docked, named Zula without being told, and was cuffed in the bay. He identified the enemy as a juggernaut. The disc came from Blue Marsalis, a Company scientist who had weaponized Xenomorphs and died after giving him black-site data. The order he intercepted was for solvent H-AC278, used with the Facehugger mutagen Plagiarus praepotens, and it had come from Minos.

A leftover fragment of Davis in Mae marked Rook as Father and not her own. Littlefield's section held the bay. The Fury was too damaged to keep hunting, so Zula took Rook's lead and came in under a repair cover.

The Jackals Reach Minos

Minos hung over Dimitar, a pale green ice world also called LV-895, with air that could not keep people alive. The cover story was parts for the Three World Empire fleet. A 100,000 kilometer graphene and diamond-nanothread elevator ran to the surface, with paired crawlers and a satellite grid that blocked a direct landing. Station AI Kaspar delayed the Jackals for 721 seconds on a claimed lock malfunction.

Station chief Kai Rolstad did not want them ashore. Papers from General Christian Cunningham forced rest and repairs. Workers had clean hands, and a second shipload of cheap deckhands had arrived that week for the company to bury in orbit. Captain Olivia Shipp was on that first look, with Yoo and Mae.

Level Eleven And Kuebiko

Mae made Rook reopen a face scar so they could walk him into synth repair as a damaged Bishop. Ex-Marine Holyfield sewed units there. Mae spiked the repair-bay node, and Rook found a firewalled level 11 with no visible synthetics. They went EVA as repair androids.

A pad belonging to Dr. Weis mixed human DNA with alien fungal RNA, not Xenomorph DNA. Manifests listed human families sent planet-side. The fungus was Kuebiko, from Hotoke on the Outer Rim. Dr. Dietzler was named on the files. They hid from Weis, her lab droid put the pad back, and Zula committed to a raid.

Red, Green, And Blue

Green Team, under Lieutenant Scott Keith and Sergeant Carol Mitchell, was to take command on a dark rotation and spike Kaspar for EWA, with Erynis in a combat body and synths G1 through G4. Blue Team was Mae Prime and Rook, plus Lieutenant Debois's section, going EVA into level 11 for proof. Red Team was Zula and Shipp planet-side, with Sergeant Ray Ackerman, Sergeant Nyako, and two synth squads, plus Sunspot Good Boys and six Pinpoint drones.

Mae loaded copies of herself into G1 and R1 and kept the risk from Zula. Green Mae scratched the Shānmén infinity mark on her chest. Red Mae smudged her combat face so Zula could tell her apart. Green wore lighter kit and M41A rifles, with no Good Boys, smartguns, or flamers.

Green Team Dies In Command

Erynis looped the cameras for about ten minutes. Green Team cuffed one guard and gummed three comms staff. Erynis took Kaspar in a fraction of a second, then Kaspar hacked him back and poured malicious code into the Green synths. G2 through G4 attacked the humans without guns, because Kaspar would not damage itself.

Green Mae blew their joints and ripped the control units. Kaspar used Erynis's key to lock the Fury. Rolstad came on the speakers, then opened the door. Blue-jointed Kuebiko adult Xenomorphs swarmed and went for synthetics first. Green Mae beamed her core to Mae Prime a moment before a drone punched her processor. Keith, Mitchell, and the rest of Green Team died there, and Erynis was left damaged with white fluid at his mouth.

Blue Team In The Labs

On level 11, Dr. Elise Vogel walked Mae through the Company plan. Weyland-Yutani wanted XX121 droppable enough to clear a world, then recallable so the Company could take the resources. Mechanical control had failed. Kuebiko was a hive-mind fungus they steered on a Mother Colony with scent and electrical stimuli. A year of injecting it into adult Xenomorphs had failed because of acid blood, so they pre-infected the human host and let the fungus ride the Facehugger cycle into the adult Xenomorph.

After about one day the change could not be reversed. Some hosts grew the colony. Others were prey for client demonstrations. Sedated workers lay on gurneys, and twenty more hung on racks. Sealed boxes dumped blue-jointed adult Xenomorphs that moved in Jackal-like groups. Poly grenades cocooned the first wave. Rolstad locked the vent-to-space control, and Mae spiked the airlock. Green Mae's core dump then hit Mae Prime and dropped her.

Blue Team Dies In Vacuum

Infected workers opened the remaining crates without a word. Three of them dragged Vogel into an elevator. Poly grenades ran out, and acid ate the deck. Synthetics B1 and B2 were torn apart. Leone took acid in the face. The EVA suits were shredded, so Mae sent the remaining synths toward the Fury and left the humans behind.

Infected humans cycled the airlock. B3 knocked Cojocaru and Tawiah out. B4 and Corporal Ware went out together. Mae was thrown, and Rook held her by the ankle with his hand jammed in the grate. The rest of Blue Team died in vacuum. Mae and Rook re-entered on level 10. Zula ordered the Fury's pods away and the Blackstar to the generals.

Red Team On Dimitar

The elevator foyer was empty. Crates held comatose young adults under gas, and Zula would not wake them. Pinpoints marked a large building about five kilometers down a valley and security prefabs a kilometer uphill. The valley was a boneyard of people who had run south and not made it. Company sentry guns lined the approach. Corporal Thami dropped them with EMP grenades the Company had not hardened.

The command prefab was empty. The staff had left in a hurry. Mae used Rook's Company backdoor. A tunnel of glowing hexagonal polymer, not resin, led on. Private Feldman and synths R5 through R8 were sent back with five silent, glowing workers. Feldman never answered, and a blast door slammed, leaving him and those workers in the tunnels.

The Planet Queen And The Hive

Forty stacked chambers held the full lifecycle: an open egg, a young woman with a Chestburster, and a dried Facehugger. Infected people glowed blue, called for help, then grappled Jackals. Hangar hatches dumped drones. Good Boys' sound worked until infected humans smothered the dogs' sensors. A Queen hung in a Company polymer net, blue in the joints, with fresh eggs under her.

Kuebiko let her run the infected people as well as the drones. Scientists in stained coats stood among them. Infected workers used the Jackals' no-harm-human rules to beat synths with rocks. Red Mae, who did not have that block, shot a charging woman nearly in half. Zula would not burn the chamber while they were in it. She wanted the Fury and a nuclear strike from twenty clicks out. They pushed into a bone valley, stole an open-top Company transport tagged Edward Bennington, and found claw marks through the logo. Feldman, Meadows, Lancaster, and most of two synth squads were gone. Only synth R2 was left with Red Mae when the elevator shut and trapped them on the planet.

The Blackstar Escapes Minos

Zula went on open comms: abandon the Fury in cryo pods on a spread far side of Dimitar, command PARS-43. Mae and Rook were to take the Blackstar to the three generals with Red Mae's data. Rook held Mae's Deep Lock key, which could trigger a memory wipe if they were caught. The station ran an evac countdown while an adult Xenomorph worked a hatch ahead of them.

An executive elevator trapped Rook on one side of a pressure door. Mae took the transit toward the galleria. A David unit attacked her on the tram, and she killed him with Zula's bowie knife. Her own blood was mixed red, not white. On the galleria a blue-tinged drone took Alice Prim of the shuttle Solo Cup alive, and another put an inner jaw through an older man in a white coat. Rook headshot that drone. Kaspar locked station and Fury. They squeezed the Blackstar out as the hangar doors closed. A later fight with a small enemy group ejected both of them, and Mae's wipe fired.

The Popes Find Mae

The Pope family was stripping wreckage in Krasue orbit, in the Nachzehrer system, from the salvage ship Eumenides. Lenny Pope had an eye augment from childhood Muster Syndrome and could jack the flight computer. His brother Morgan and parents William and Daniella, both former UPP special forces, wanted the metal, not a living passenger. The cloud held Eitr, which they knew from Shānmén, and a military cryo pod with one green light.

Salvage law kept a living occupant off the scrap list, but they held her anyway. She gave the name Mae. Oxygen was almost gone, so they slingshot around Duendes and ran three days for Guelph, a stacked Jutou Combine station in UPP space that had nearly burned up half a decade earlier.

The Extraktors On Guelph

The Extraktors were Combine-sanctioned synth hunters, not Marines, led by Captain Warrae with a brain implant, Sergeant Homolka with replaced limbs, and four HB enforcers. They treated a synth uprising as imminent and Guelph as a node on an underground synthetic network. They smashed a half-built unit belonging to hacker Anna Mortise, and Homolka shot her. They took the medical synth Pelorus, who had treated Lenny and networked with his augment, then flayed his face and tore off his jaw to jack the mouth nodes.

Library synth Alice, an old Seegson Aurora conduit, matched Mae's wreck serial to a Weyland-Yutani experimental and her face about seventy-five percent to Zula. A clerk wrote the name Mae Henderson. The Extraktors grabbed Mae and Lenny from a Combine dock and jailed William, Daniella, and Morgan as leverage.

Mae Bargains For Minos

Warrae ripped Mae's jaw and probed her chipset. She was an unlicensed autonomous build, not a Company or Seegson line. Davis still spoke from behind a deeper firewall. Mae sold them Minos as a bioweapon and prototype-synth site if they freed the Popes except Lenny. William, Daniella, and Morgan were beaten and left on Guelph with the Eumenides held in dock.

Four weeks later the Extraktor ship Ariadne found Minos powered, the Fury locked on the umbilical, and the elevator intact. Mae lied about a virus and breathers. The dock field was blown, and the Solo Cup floated in the bay beside the wrecked tram and the David body.

Rook And Lenny Restart The Elevator

Mae used a Mr. Brown on the command deck, where security were dead and other staff had been taken rather than killed in place. Davis woke Company Mr. Browns against Combine augments. One Extraktor died, and Mae took his knife. She and Lenny dumped down an industrial chute, and Lenny cut the inhibitor from her throat because she could not operate on herself.

She sent him in a janitorial Mr. Brown to the command center to restart the crawler. Lenny found Rook there, legs shot, after three Minos cycles and a crawl from the tram wreck. They networked with Mae. Zula was alive on the planet with leftover Jackals. Lenny restored elevator power. A hibernating drone dropped, Lenny's rifle went empty, and Rook killed that drone as its acid blood went through the floor.

The Second Queen And The Engines

Mae found a station hive by the orbital thrusters: resin, empty eggs, chest-burst hosts, and a second Queen. Rolstad was webbed and burst. She aimed the engines at the training facility and the Mother Colony. Kaspar tried to abort the burn. Rook stayed to override it and sent Lenny to the elevator.

Warrae and Homolka walked into that hive. Homolka opened fire, and the drones woke. The Extraktors were torn apart or taken as hosts. Acid-eaten Warrae tried to rip Mae's jaw again. She cut his wrist, drove the knife into his neck, and left him for the drones.

Red Mae Dies At The Hive

After weeks on Dimitar the hive needed new eggs and hunted harder. Sampath, Zhany, and Thami had died in a fight three days before the rescue. Six humans were left with Red Mae: Zula, injured Shipp, Ackerman with a planetary sting, medic Amutenya, Minkas, and Konaan. Both synth squads were gone.

Red Mae stayed as bait with the last Good Boys, Pinpoints, sentry guns, and a small buggy packed with C4. She ran for the hive mouth, shotgunned one drone off the door, and lost the Good Boys at the entrance. She tight-beamed her memories to Mae Prime, then detonated the charge in the Mother Colony doorway. The Jackals did not confirm the planet Queen's death. The six humans reached the crawler.

Minos Falls, The Fury Escapes

Mae Prime took Red Mae's last memories at the elevator doors. Six Jackals came up, with Zula holding Shipp and Amutenya carrying Ackerman. Half the planet team did not come back, and no planet synths remained. Rook held Kaspar on the death track and unlocked the umbilical. They disconnected by hand. EWA was jammed, so the Fury could only use attitude thrusters at first.

Minos dived with the Extraktors, the Ariadne, and the second Queen inside. Zula had disc drives of Minos proof in her webbing. Rook left Mae the black-site data, including a juggernaut staging planet, and a warning not to copy humans in every way. Lenny restored the Fury's systems faster than an augment should have managed, asked to be called Leonard Pope, and took the vacant conduit post that had been Erynis's. A copy of Rook remained in Lenny's eye implant. They still had to find and recover the Jackal cryo pods.

Minos And Kuebiko

Minos presented as a Three World Empire parts plant. The real work was a Kuebiko and XX121 control program, with client demonstrations of "manageable" Xenomorphs and human families used as hosts and prey. Kuebiko came from Hotoke. The Company steered satellite colonies from a Mother Colony. After about a day in a host the change could not be undone.

The station ran a Facehugger lifecycle hive on Dimitar and kept adult Xenomorphs in sealed boxes for the labs. Infected people glowed blue, opened doors and airlocks, smothered Good Boys, and beat synthetics. Adult Xenomorphs used those hosts as hive furniture and attacked synthetics even in charging racks. The planet hive was Company polymer, not resin, with a Queen in a net and a training valley of sentry guns. A second Queen later grew in the station engine rooms. Disc labels included Small Fry, Wall Skeleton, and Fry Up.

Confirmed Xenomorph Kills

Rook headshot one drone on the galleria and later killed one hibernating drone in the command corridor. Red Mae shotgunned one drone off the buggy, then the C4 at the hive mouth destroyed an uncounted wave and the last Good Boys. Blue Team cocooned a first wave with poly grenades and later downed drones whose acid blood ate the floor.

Green command, level 11, the planet hive, and the engine room were mass fights with no counted totals. The station crash destroyed the remaining Extraktors, the Ariadne, and the second Queen. The C4 blast at the hive mouth did not confirm the planet Queen's death. Mae also destroyed a David unit and killed Warrae.

Key Characters

• Mae Hendricks was Zula and Davis's synthetic daughter. She lost Green and Red copies, had her jaw torn on Guelph, killed Warrae, and survived on the Fury with both splinters' memories.
• Red Mae was the R1 copy on Dimitar. She died detonating C4 in the Mother Colony doorway after the last six humans reached the crawler.
• Green Mae was the G1 copy in command. A drone destroyed her after she beamed her core to Mae Prime.
• Zula Hendricks commanded the Jackals. She spent weeks on Dimitar, brought proof discs off Minos, and offered Lenny the conduit post.
• Rook was a scarred Bishop who had flown the Blackstar for Blue Marsalis. His body died holding Minos on the crash, and a copy settled in Lenny's augment.

• Leonard Pope was a Guelph scavenger with an eye augment. He cut Mae's inhibitor, restarted the elevator, and stayed on the Fury as conduit, with Rook riding him.
• William, Daniella, and Morgan Pope ran the Eumenides. They were beaten and left alive on Guelph when the Extraktors took Lenny.
• Kai Rolstad was Minos station chief. He locked the Fury and later died chest-burst in the engine-room hive.
• Warrae led the Extraktors. Mae stabbed him and left him for the drones.
• Homolka shot Anna Mortise and opened fire in the station hive. The Extraktors were destroyed there.
• Elise Vogel was a level 11 scientist on a family indenture. Infected workers dragged her into an elevator.
• Scott Keith and Carol Mitchell led Green Team and died when Kaspar opened command to the drones.
• Davis was dead before the chase. Fragments of his voice returned in Mae and faded again after Minos.
• Blue Marsalis was dead before this book. She had given Rook the black-site disc that sent the Jackals to Minos.
• Masako Littlefield and Gabriella Rossi were on the Fury before the raid. They are not listed among the dead.

Place In The Titan Line

Titan released David Barnett's Alien: Colony War in April 2022, Ballantine and Carija's Inferno's Fall that July and August, then Mary SanGiovanni's Alien: Enemy of My Enemy in 2023. Seventh Circle followed in January 2025 as the Jackals book after Inferno's Fall, not as a numbered Inferno sequel. A leftover fragment of Davis in Mae dates her conception to their last close call in the colony war.

This paperback does not bind a Free League Alien RPG scenario the way Colony War and Inferno's Fall did.

Continuity

The story year is never given, though Zula's Combine library file lists her date of birth as 28 October 2119 and marks her former USCM, AWOL. The action sits after Inferno's Fall: Shānmén is a wreck, Eitr is no longer mined there, Erynis was reset at Pylos, and the three generals still back the Fury. Davis is dead when the chase begins.

Minos ran a Facehugger lifecycle hive and kept adult Xenomorphs in sealed boxes for the labs. It was not a Black Goo dump like Shānmén. The Jackals kept hunting the horseshoe bombers after the station fell. Dimitar is also called LV-895, an ice world that cannot support people, and is not the jungle LV-895 of later Marine campaigns. Yautja do not appear. Yoo, Littlefield, and Rossi last appear before the three-team raid.

Editions And Adaptations

Titan's trade paperback came out in the United Kingdom and the United States on 7 January 2025 at 416 pages. Titan also released an ebook the same day. The Titan editions credit the novel to Ballantine, with the story by Ballantine and Carija.

Blackstone Publishing released an audiobook on 7 January 2025, read by Nikki Massoud, about nine hours and fifty-four minutes. The Fury's next task is the cryo-pod pickup and the juggernaut staging world on Rook's discs.

Behind The Scenes

Inferno's Fall had used Dante circle titles. Seventh Circle keeps the name and uses 35 numbered chapters with maze titles instead: Minos, Knossos, Ariadne, Eumenides, labyrinth. Carija's acknowledgements thank partner Simon Vallance for the Jaw Breakers.

Ballantine thanks her husband Tee Morris and her mother. Carija thanks Ballantine for a second book together. The author note lists Carija's Alien RPG cartography and her consults on Scott Sigler's Aliens: Phalanx and Alex White's Alien: Into Charybdis.
