Guelph Station: Seventh Circle's Combine Mining Outpost
Guelph Station was a Jùtóu Combine mining outpost in Union of Progressive Peoples space in Philippa Ballantine's 2025 novel Alien: Seventh Circle. Old, cheap, and towed out to a backwater, it was the home port of family haulers such as the Popes and their mining skiff, the Eumenides. The Popes brought Mae Hendricks there after they found her in a cryo escape pod with no memory. Combine synth hunters called the Extraktors were already aboard, and their raid on the station's synthetics ended with Mae exposed as an artificial person and taken away.
Station Components
Hull And Orbit
Guelph had three decks stacked beneath a simple circular shape, and it orbited a planet that showed through the galleria window. The station was already old when the Jùtóu Combine towed it to this backwater, and it showed its age at every seam. Half a decade before Mae arrived, a cost-cutting station chief sent by the Combine let it drag too low in the atmosphere. Neglected maintenance on the stabilization units nearly made it burn up and crash on the planet, and carbonization on the lower half of its hull still marked those few hours. Lenny Pope knew the station had little run time left, but he still considered it home.
Guelph was a mining outpost where company and freelance trawlers brought in whatever they could find in the nearby system. Once the planets and asteroid belts were tapped out, the Combine planned to haul the whole station to another system. The UPP and the Combine kept hundreds of these small stations spinning in the far reaches of the galaxy, and most stayed under-funded and under-repaired. Almost every ship that docked there was a family concern, and only a rare crew that struck it rich moved on to easier places such as New Eden. Even the lesson disc Lenny gave Mae about the powers and companies left Guelph out.
Docks And Dry Dock
The main dock handled the working ships. The Eumenides berthed at Dock 12, across from the Extraktors' ship at Dock 6, and Lenny knew the old haulers Lola, Caliente, Enoki, and Furball on sight. A weigh station inside the dock area weighed each harvest and paid for it, an alchemist synthetic sorted the ore, and a young clerk named Yeni ran the salvage counter. Daniella Pope warned that Guelph enumerations were neither honest nor quick to pay. A separate private dock, where the rich kept their pleasure craft, had room for five vessels but never filled up.
Guelph's dry dock was a large deck where ships that could not fly waited for repairs. During Mae's visit three ships were parked with their doors open, two smaller vessels lay in a cradle of scaffolding, and an old Stiemer freighter was nearly finished. Synthetic and human workers swarmed over the hulls, and most of the synthetics were as old as the freighter and as badly in need of repair. Lenny admitted that the Eumenides belonged there but that maintenance was expensive so far out. The Weyland-Yutani synthetic Pelorus worked shifts on this deck and kept a small corner at its far end.
Galleria And Upper Levels
The galleria lay three levels above the docking bay and was painted the same surplus green as the corridors. Mining crews ate at mismatched tables in front of a grimy window that looked out over the planet, while plastic plants and wobbly maintenance droids failed to brighten it. Cal's Chicken Joint was where everyone ate, though no one asked what its chicken really was. Many shops stood boarded up, and Captain Warrae judged the station close to the point of moving on. Spacers drank at Stacey's Bar, and the medical bay on level ten gave workers free radiation scans.
Level nineteen held the library, a small space crammed between middle management offices that stored only what the Combine judged valuable for its workers. The hydroponics level at the top of the station grew plants for managers' offices and helped scrub carbon dioxide from the air. The Popes kept quarters on the station painted an extravagant blue, which William Pope decorated with pictures of Earth landscapes. Security answered to Sven Gunnerson, a lax drunk who gambled on the workers' levels. Most cameras on Guelph went unmonitored, but those over the private dock stayed on and watched at all times.
Sub-Levels
Below the working decks lay the sub-levels, known as the down-below. In the station's early days they had held equipment storage, and once that equipment moved to its proper places, the space went to an underclass of workers. Most rooms had no windows, the air conditioning was mediocre, and the sparse hygiene facilities were retrofitted. Families there took the worst jobs for the least pay and often added illegal work, which held them in place for generations. Residents stuck together, and the hacker Anna Mortise ran a synthetic workshop from an apartment there until Warrae found her.
Station Synthetics
Pelorus, also called Pelorus Jack, was a brand new Weyland-Yutani Sunstrike synthetic and the most expensive piece of technology in the dry dock. The Sunstrike line was designed with advanced empathy and flat silver eyes, and Pelorus had the form of a tall, thin, middle-aged man with a kind face. He had worked in a hospice, caring for a dying woman named Meryl Sparrow when her family would not, and she released him from his contract in her will. Her next of kin disagreed, so he escaped to Guelph with help from friends in the underground synthetic network.
Pelorus lived and worked on Guelph for many years, and the community loved him. He cared for people who could not afford health care, babysat children including Lenny and Morgan Pope, made toys for the youngest, and told stories of the core worlds. During Lenny's treatment he described other worlds, and through Lenny's hidden augment he shared images of wildflowers, ancient trees, and an ocean from his time on Earth. He kept a wall of pictures of famous stars and ordinary Guelph residents as reminders of how far he still had to go to be as human as humans.
Alice ran the library on level nineteen. She was an old Seegson Aurora synthetic, used a generation earlier as the conduit between settlers and a ship AI when humanity first came to that part of the galaxy. Guelph reprogrammed her to give access to the digital archives, a lonely job no human would take. Her designers gave her braided dark hair and features that blended Eastern European and Spanish looks to reflect the nations behind the UPP. She charged contractors a fee for searches, and the Aurora series was close to decommissioning, with every active hour bringing her nearer to the end.
History
The Pope Family
The Pope family split their lives between the Eumenides and their quarters on Guelph. William and Daniella Pope had served two tours with the UPP's Space Operating Forces, and Daniella had served time on a UPP prison planet. Their sons Morgan and Lenny worked the green-hulled mining skiff with them. Lenny was born with the Muster Syndrome, and the augment that saved him at ten put the family in debt and kept the Eumenides on razor-thin margins. Everyone on Guelph feared Daniella, and Morgan had already found both a boyfriend and a girlfriend on the station.
Arrival Of Mae
The Popes found Mae in a cryo escape pod in the debris along the orbit of Krasue, and the law on recovered pods sent them straight back to Guelph. With oxygen running out, they slingshot around Duendes and reached the station in three days. Mae signed over salvage rights to the family as thanks, and Yeni registered a provisional claim for the Eumenides under the name Mae Henderson, payable once her UPP identity was reinstated. Mae refused to visit the medical bay and pinned Lenny in a wristlock on the dock when he pressed her, in front of his friends Perez and Baranov.
Morgan took a carbonized fragment of the pod wreckage to Alice and paid her fee with his Combine card. Ship logs for Guelph-controlled space turned up nothing beyond small UPP frigates on perimeter patrol, but the twenty-eight-digit serial number returned an experimental Weyland-Yutani base code from a ship. A face search on Mae's image found a partial match of seventy-five percent to Zula Hendricks, listed as absent without leave from the Colonial Marines. The brothers showed Mae the record in the hydroponics level, where the watering cycle covered their voices, but she did not recognize the face.
The Extraktor Hunt
The Extraktors were a Combine unit of augmented humans and synthetics that hunted rogue synthetics and broke into rival companies' proprietary software. Captain Warrae had reliable intel that Guelph had become a stop on the underground synthetic network, though his superiors doubted the network existed. With Sergeant Homolka, he deep-scanned the station's ducts and service lines, then overruled a station officer named Mattox by citing section fifty-six of the Guelph charter, which let him search anywhere on the station. His men went after residents with past arrests for smuggling and synthetic trademark tampering.
Warrae and Homolka took four enforcers down to the sub-levels after Mortise, who had once faked her death and had wounded Homolka five years earlier. Her door lock beat Warrae's hack and set off an alarm, so they shot it out and kicked the door in. Inside they found lockers of synthetic parts, a half-finished synthetic that Homolka smashed, and Mortise hidden in a compartment below. Told she faced ten years in a labor camp under Article 36.3 of the Jùtóu Charter, she drove a screwdriver into Homolka's prosthetic knee, and he shot her in the back of the head.
Taking Of Pelorus
Lenny brought Mae to Pelorus at the end of a shift, hoping the synthetic could help her memory without putting her on the Combine's radar. Before Pelorus could use his probes, the Extraktors sealed the dry dock exits and called for him. He hid Mae and Lenny in a cramped space behind his bench, warning Mae that the hunters would want who she was. The Extraktors dismissed his contract papers as forged, said they had found his name on Mortise's list of runaways, and told him she was dead. They took him away to reverse engineer his hardware, and his programming would not let him fight back.
Arrest Of The Popes
While the Popes unloaded their salvage, the Extraktors moved on the Eumenides. Armed synthetics lined the cargo ramp and accused the family of carrying an undocumented person. Daniella demanded the deck chief, Morgan argued that the Eumenides was a registered Guelph ship, and a fight broke out before the guards closed around the family. Mae held Lenny back in the elevator, took him up, and told him they had to hide somewhere without cameras. The Extraktors locked the family in a bare cell at their temporary headquarters, a space they had requisitioned from station security.
The Icarus Attempt
Lenny led Mae through the air ducts to the private dock, where the Icarus waited. A high-ranking Combine manager had arrived on it almost a year earlier for an audit, then was stabbed while gambling and dumped in the sewage tanks. The Combine kept the ship tied up for someone from headquarters to collect, and Lenny had taken its code from the executive's corpse in the morgue. He used a code lifted from Sven Gunnerson's wrist-pd to open the dock controls and handed Mae coordinates for Thedus in Three World Empire space. Warrae's unit cut the ship's power and captured them both.
Departure On The Ariadne
In the Extraktors' back room, Mae found Pelorus flayed on a medical bed with his face removed. Warrae said Pelorus had read her micro-expressions, gave her away only under extreme duress, and had tried a fatal shutdown first. Medical synthetics tore off Mae's jaw, and the probe exposed her as an unlicensed bespoke synthetic. Mae offered a black site full of prototype technology in exchange for the family's freedom. Warrae agreed to free William, Daniella, and Morgan but kept Lenny as leverage, saying station security would release them after he left and that the Eumenides could not undock for some time.
Station workers turned their backs as the Extraktors marched Lenny and Mae down to the dock. The Ariadne, the fast new ship the Popes had seen on arrival, was a Kinmokusei-class vessel built for the unit, with racks for synthetics and only five cryopods. Lenny remarked that Ariadne had betrayed her own family too. Warrae set a course into Three World space, and Mae, whose memories had returned, was leading the Extraktors to Minos Station. The Popes stayed behind beaten and bleeding, and the novel never returned to Guelph.
Guelph And Minos
Seventh Circle cut between Mae's days on Guelph and the memories of Minos she had lost. Guelph was an aging Jùtóu mining outpost towed between systems by the Combine, while Minos was a Weyland-Yutani factory station with its own engines and navigation controls. The novel described Minos as smaller than most processing rigs and mining stations like Guelph, since it only needed enough mass to counterweight its space elevator. Guelph's failures were in plain view, from boarded shops to a carbonized hull, while Minos hid its Kuebiko labs behind a parts factory cover. Minos ended its story in a fall to Dimitar, and Guelph was last seen still in service.
Behind The Scenes
Guelph Station was created for Alien: Seventh Circle, written by Philippa Ballantine from a story developed with Clara Carija and published by Titan Books in January 2025. The novel followed Alien: Inferno's Fall, in which Mae fought in a combat body on Shānmén. Guelph's scenes came from the points of view of Mae, Lenny, and Warrae, and the chapter in which the Popes dock is titled The Joys Of Home. Lenny's remark that Ariadne had betrayed her own family tied the Extraktors' ship to the labyrinth theme of later chapters such as Return To Knossos and Labyrinth's End.
Conclusion
Guelph Station was a worn Jùtóu Combine mining outpost in UPP space, with three decks under a circular hull scarred by a near crash. It was home to the Pope family, the healer synthetic Pelorus, and the archive synthetic Alice. When the Popes brought Mae there, Captain Warrae's Extraktors were already hunting the underground synthetic network. They killed Anna Mortise, took Pelorus apart, arrested the Popes, and stopped Lenny's attempt to fly Mae out on the Icarus. Mae traded a black site for the family's freedom and left with Lenny on the Ariadne, bound for Minos.
