Zula Hendricks was a Colonial Marine private whose career ended on her first mission, when a blast on a Xenomorph-held world left her with massive spinal trauma. Recruited off a city street at eighteen, she spent her recovery fighting the company that wanted the creatures as weapons, first beside the synthetic Davis on the hauler Europa and later with Amanda Ripley. She was discharged at twenty-three, trained colonists on Jericho 3, came through a nuclear blast on a test moon and survived an implanted embryo on Purdan. By 2186 she was a colonel commanding the multinational Jackals from the warship Righteous Fury.

Biography

Enlisting On The Streets

Young Zula Hendricks running from soldiers with a stolen sidearm in Aliens: Defiance

Zula Hendricks grew up in a crowded, run-down city district, and her induction day was recalled in Aliens: Defiance as she fled adult Xenomorphs aboard the Europa, through Dr. Yang reminding her of the story she had told in their first therapy session. A military recruitment van had stopped beneath an elevated highway, and armed soldiers were pushing back the crowd around it. Zula, small and wearing a red top with a yellow star, pulled a soldier's sidearm from its holster as he shoved a man aside, and ran.

Soldiers chased Zula through alleys and over fences for around eighteen hours while a gunship circled overhead. When they cornered her in a ruined building, their leader asked her age. She said she was eighteen, and when he guessed fifteen at most, she insisted she was just small. He called her a hell of a fighter and gave her a choice between signing up at the van and using the handgun to end it there. Zula handed the pistol back and enlisted as an outreach recruit with no family the Corps could later find to notify.

Wounded On The First Mission

A blast throws Zula Hendricks on her first mission in Aliens: Defiance

She had been warned that she would have to work twice as hard as the others, and she worked three times as hard to get through selection. Her first deployment put her squad on a rock that the creatures held, and she lost her rifle under fire and crawled back across open ground to reach it. An explosion threw her into the air, and the rest of her unit took the worst of the blast and dragged her clear. She woke at Tranquility Medical Center on Luna unable to move her toes, with doctors calling the damage massive spinal trauma.

Recovering On Luna

Treatment at Tranquility Base on Luna combined reconstructive surgery with nanotherapy under the physician Dr. Emi Yang, who expected Zula to make a full recovery. During spinal rehab she befriended Amanda Ripley, a mechanic searching for word of her lost mother, a friendship told in the Alien: Isolation novel. An officer reminded Zula that the Corps had spent years training her and had not gained a single battle from it. Her fire team had looked at her as a liability once she fell behind, and she carried that look as a mark against her record.

While she recovered, Zula shadowed Amanda on repair calls around Tranquility Base as an unpaid trainee, though her back made crawling through tight spaces impossible. On one call they met the engineer Jeremiah Brodsky at a jammed airlock in the Weyland-Yutani tech center, where five people were trapped inside. Brodsky rebooted the system before Amanda had finished, and the airlock began to depressurize until she opened the inner door by hand. At the Weyland-Yutani tribunal two days later, Zula stood up as a witness and confirmed Amanda's account. Brodsky was held responsible and faced criminal charges.

Her return to duty put her beside a unit of synthetics led by Davis One, sent to board the Seegson hauler Europa drifting near the Moon. The crew was dead, an airlock had been turned into a nest of eggs and Davis lost eight of his unit clearing the ship while Zula lay in stasis. On December 14, 2137, a slingshot maneuver sent the Europa onto an extrasolar course, because Davis refused to deliver the creatures to Weyland-Yutani. When he woke her, Zula could not move her legs at first and made him release her restraints so she could test them.

Boarding The Station At LV-44-40

The events of Aliens: Defiance took the Europa to a Seegson science station at LV-44-40, where Zula went through the door first as the only Marine of the group. She wore a brace from her hips to her shoulders, a month had passed since her last nerve treatment and she breathed from her suit rather than admit the pain to the synthetics around her. The station held an adult Xenomorph that had taken enormous fire to bring down, and another one came at the boarding party in the cargo bay. Zula met it with her rifle and drove it back to its nest.

Other Davis units then turned on Davis One, restored the Weyland-Yutani link and called for support from Tranquility. Gas charges threw Zula across a compartment and tore something in her back, and Davis killed the mutineers one by one. A flash message from the company named the Marine and the rogue synthetics as expendable. The same burst of mail brought seven urgent files from Amanda Ripley, word that Zula was listed as absent without leave with her pay suspended, and a note from Dr. Yang promising a clean return if she came home.

Firing On The Marine Dropship

Zula Hendricks fires from the Europa as a Marine dropship approaches in Aliens: Defiance

Weyland-Yutani and the Corps sent a dropship of twelve Marines to retrieve the specimen and kill the deserters. Locked out of the torpedo override, Zula cut two wires to force a reboot and fired on the dropship as it neared interstellar speed. She later realized the strike had been planned on the day they left Luna, using information drawn from Dr. Yang. Firing on fellow Marines convinced her that she no longer deserved to wear the uniform.

A lead in the stolen data took the Europa to the Wright-Aberra fuel depot, where a refugee hauler had spread the creatures through the common areas. They crawled in through an empty fuel line, and the low gravity of the depot eased the pain in her back for a time. Inside they found Dr. Hollis, a microbiologist and the last person alive on the station, and Zula armed her rather than leave her behind. As two Marine squads closed in, the group opened the airlocks, fled to the Europa and ignited more than a million tons of fuel in a fuel-air blast.

Releasing The Red Xenomorph

Hollis had been implanted, and she cut the organism out of her own abdomen while Davis froze it in a cryo-chilled compartment. The frozen specimen became the heart of the ship, and Zula grew worse as she worked through most of the painkillers in the hauler's locker. When the scrubbers failed and creatures crawled across the hull, Davis set a course back to Luna and claimed that his authority as her physician outranked her. Zula refused to give up the samples and called his heading a plan for her to quit.

A ship with no transponder then matched course, and masked boarders cut their way in and headed for the bridge. Dr. Yang had offered safe passage and immunity in exchange for the cargo, and Zula turned the deal down. She released the thawed specimen instead, and the creature that came out of the cold was a huge red Xenomorph with a long crest that tore through the boarders. The Europa hauled away from the moon at full power while the pirate craft broke up behind it.

Bringing The Europa Down

A fuel cell rupture left the Europa a wreck above Earth and Luna, and Luna air defense ordered it to stop for boarding. Zula answered as a Colonial Marine, sent a code that checked out and spoke with General Mazza of Luna Command, who admitted they had hoped for a live specimen. She put Hollis into an escape pod and told Davis to get rid of the sample. The hauler broke up over the planet and sank in the ocean with Davis aboard, while the two women watched from a survival float.

Aircraft arrested Private Hendricks on the float at sunset, and she was taken to Spiron-Dakota Military Hospital under guard. She arrived with her old spinal injury, muscle atrophy, low-level radiation exposure and three fractured ribs, and staff refused her pain medication because she had dosed herself in deep space. In the same hospital Weyland-Yutani cut into Hollis for the alien tissue left in her body, and she did not survive. The company had lost its live Chestburster specimen and blamed Zula for it.

Discharged From The Corps

Zula Hendricks faces her military hearing in Aliens: Defiance

Under watch at the hospital, Zula walked around ten kilometers a day on a machine, mostly to spite the men training her. At her hearing she admitted to taking the Europa, deserting, helping Davis kill the rest of his unit and firing on fellow Marines, and said she regretted it and would do it again. A man in a suit watching her sessions called her too broken and too clever, a liability. The hearing ended with her dismissal from the Colonial Marines.

Surgery on her spine followed, and she woke able to walk, run and swim without a brace. Dr. Yang told her she was twenty-three, healthy and no longer a Marine, and warned her about a tracker planted during the operation. Zula slipped away through a metro system, hired a fast boat and dived to the sunken Europa. She took a small device from the body of Davis One, the neural chip that carried him, and swam back with the mission far from over.

Training Recruits On Jericho 3

In Alien: Prototype, Zula was in her mid-twenties and working for Venture on the colony world Jericho 3, where she trained ten recruits for the Colony Protection Force. The trainees called her Sarge, though she had only ever held the rank of private first class. Davis lived in a personal assistant device and moved through the computer core of the Lodge. Her back hurt whenever she carried a pulse rifle for long, and she suffered recurring nightmares that she could not shake.

Her worst nightmare returned her to Tranquility as Xenomorphs overran the base. Davis was dragged away by a tail, and a bone-white creature killed Amanda before turning on Zula. During a training exercise in the Junkyard, a camouflaged training robot called a Hider attacked the recruits with its claws. Zula drew it away from them and destroyed it with a grenade. Recruit Ronny Yoo later admitted that the attack had been his prank, and that his cousin in the tech department had reprogrammed the robot for him.

At the remains of a group of killed workers, Zula met Tamar Prather and her synthetic companion Brigette, and the bodies showed cellular necrosis and tooth marks. A stolen specimen in the lab of Millard Gagnon had produced a diseased creature later called the Necromorph, and the outbreak tore through the Lodge. Tamar fired on the creature beside Zula and the recruits and tagged it with a tracking disk, but she was later infected with the necrosis. By the end of the outbreak, five of the ten trainees had been killed.

Zula took the survivors through an electrical storm in a skimmer and hung from its drop cable as bait. Ronny and Masako drew the Necromorph to her at the Junkyard training ground, and she led it aboard the skimmer. Once the craft was airborne, she dropped out through the emergency hatch in the floor on a harness, and Davis overloaded the engines with a power surge so the skimmer was destroyed with the creature inside.

At Brigette's last request, Zula destroyed the research Gagnon had gathered on the creature. A medical check afterward showed no sign of the necrosis in her body. The surviving trainees were Ronny, Masako, Ray, Genevieve and Donnell. Venture offered them relocation to another facility, and Zula urged them to take it and to stay in the Colony Protection Force. She left Jericho 3 on a supply ship bound for Earth to find Amanda.

Raiding The Weyland-Yutani Blacksite

Amanda Ripley and Zula Hendricks fire on the hull while synthetics shoot back in Aliens: Resistance

Three years after Sevastopol, in Aliens: Resistance, Zula landed a VTOL on Earth and took Amanda aboard, with Davis speaking from a portable pod. While Amanda went into a Weyland-Yutani tower to steal cover for an unregulated colony ship, Zula waited outside with a missile and fired it into the building when synthetics caught her friend. They left Earth on the stolen ship Celestial and followed the colony ship Gaspar to a classified blacksite. Its eleven hundred colonists had vanished from the manifest.

Zula carried Davis in her rifle as the two women boarded the station in suits, where a gold-visored synthetic came apart under their fire in a tunnel of crates. The synthetics sent the colonists down to a moon as hosts, and the station carried a nine-kiloton self-destruct charge that Davis moved inside to hold. Hull fire threw Zula clear of the station, and Amanda went after her instead of staying at the failsafe. A hex capsule left by Davis carried both women through the burn after the Gaspar.

Stranded On The Test Moon

A black adult Xenomorph leaps at Zula Hendricks in the jungle in Aliens: Resistance

The Gaspar lay wrecked in a jungle clearing, and its colonists had been driven into the trees in tagged jumpsuits as part of a forced evolution program. From a ridge Zula and Amanda fired to break a hunt, and the noise drew a black adult Xenomorph up the slope at Zula, who killed it. Davis reached her through a transmitter in her hairclip while he held the bomb from inside. She saved the thermal profile of one colonist, Alec Brand, so they could find him again.

Alec struck Amanda with a rock before he understood that they had come to save him. Zula treated his testimony as the case against the company, covering kidnapping, illegal research and the murder of more than a thousand people. With dawn under thirty minutes away the adult Xenomorphs charged the clearing, and the women emptied their last clips as the Celestial lifted with Alec strapped inside. Davis set off the charge, and the nuclear blast followed the ship as Zula and Amanda embraced aboard.

Infiltrating Castor's Cradle

Zula Hendricks aims a pulse rifle between Xenomorphs and an egg in the hive of Castor's Cradle in Alien: Rogue Incursion

The game Alien: Rogue Incursion sent Zula and Davis 01 to Castor's Cradle, a Gemini Exoplanet Solutions facility on the planet Purdan, as a deserter from the Marines. An old friend, Benjamin Carver, had warned her that his employer was hiding crimes that needed to be exposed. Anti-aircraft fire brought her ship down before she could land safely, and Davis stayed with the wreck to begin repairs. Zula followed the trail of Carver into a base overrun by Xenomorphs.

Deeper inside the base, the creatures overwhelmed both Zula and Davis. A Facehugger implanted Zula, and Davis was damaged so badly that she detached his head and uploaded his mind into her wrist terminal. With an embryo growing in her chest, she traced the blackout of the colony to sabotage and restored the signal. She sent a warning about Gemini to Amanda Ripley, then set the reactor of her ship to overload so the outbreak would burn with the base.

Removing The Embryo

The overload was stopped by Helen, an android of the facility, who shut down the reactor and prepared a medpod built to remove the embryo. Zula did not trust the sudden help, but Davis persuaded her that the procedure was her only real chance. The chestburster removal worked, although the embryo was dead by the time it came out. For a woman who had come to distrust medical tables after her years of spinal surgery, the pod was a hard choice.

A Praetorian then broke in and destroyed Helen, and Zula killed the creature herself. Carver reached her from a hidden lower level, where he had taken shelter with other survivors. Zula rode a classified elevator down to sublevel S1, and when the doors opened another synthetic attacked her. The story of the planned second part has never been released, which leaves her fight at Castor's Cradle on that ambush, with Carver and the conspiracy behind the outbreak unresolved.

Returning To The Uniform

After the blast, Davis came back for Zula and Amanda in a medical host body and found them alive in their hex shelters, which none of them could explain. Zula told him that he had come back for her and that their work was unfinished. Five years later, in Aliens: Rescue, she was back in uniform on a USCM forward operating base in orbit over a classified planet. The world was ten times the size of Earth, and bacteria that ate radiation had made it thrive under falling debris from the shattered moon.

She called Alec Brand, by then a Marine in Deep Space Recon, to the base so she and Amanda could tell him in person that they were alive. When Alec asked whether the Marines were working for the corporations, Zula cited the Corps charter, which banned a profit motive on discoveries off Earth. She meant the military to use the bacteria for colonization before Weyland-Yutani could lock the find away. Over a migration of Xenomorphs she promoted Alec to E-5 and gave him a squad.

Destroying The Crater Hive

Zula Hendricks turns in the firelit hive in Aliens: Rescue

At a camp in the forest Zula compared the paths of the creatures to a seasonal bird migration and explained how the company had changed after the Gaspar affair. Weyland-Yutani had been indicted, paid a massive fine and then spent triple that on bribes, going after the bioweapon laws instead of working around them. She told Alec that the Corps she had served was not the one she was describing, and that a lot had changed. The migration led to a crater full of bones, and she took the squad down the ropes into a hive.

Marines fell one after another in the tunnels, and Zula called her last magazine before they reached a round vault. Thousands of Xenomorph eggs covered its floor under three huge Xenomorphs. The squad timed their breaching charges with seismic Gremlins and drone strikes to bring the ceiling down, and Alec ran the charges in among the eggs. Zula and Amanda climbed to the rim as the vault went up, and Alec crawled out of the rubble alive.

Leading The Jackals

In 2145 three generals from the United Americas, the Union of Progressive Peoples and the Three World Empire founded the Jackals with Zula, a back-channel brigade that hunted hives outside national command. The United Americas gave her the Atlatl-class attack vessel Righteous Fury, and she spent years welding Marines, Royal Marines and UPP troops into one force. Ronny Yoo, one of her trainees from Jericho 3, rose to major at her side. She treated Amanda as dead and counted him as her oldest companion since that loss.

Davis died on LV-187 in July 2186, a loss recorded in Alien: Colony War, after he had arranged a daughter mixed from his mind and hers. That daughter was Mae Hendricks, a synthetic only months old when Alien: Inferno's Fall opened, and Zula was unsure at first how to treat her. By then Zula was a colonel who gave orders from the bridge and no longer went on away missions. Years in and out of cryosleep and the loss of friend after friend had aged her face.

The Fury had nothing more human for Mae than a standard combat synthetic body, so Zula painted an infinity loop on its shoulder to set her apart from the other units. She trusted the Jericho 3 veterans in her command, among them Ackerman, Littlefield and Stockton, more than most of her officers. Mae began calling her Mom, and Zula accepted it without comment, though she remained unsure how close to let her daughter come.

Mission To Shānmén

In 2186 an Engineer bomber dumped a black pathogen on the UPP mining world Shānmén, and the Fury arrived too late to stop it. Zula opened a channel to Toru McClintock-Riley at the besieged Svarog Mine and sent her Jackals down to pull the survivors out. She refused to send the shell of Mae to the surface, but Mae rode a combat synth to the planet anyway. Zula identified herself to Toru over the channel before a miner named Kozak tried to seize it.

When the dropship Austrian was lost, Mae moved into one of the new Integer 3 combat synthetics and came onto the bridge in a body with no infinity loop. Zula reached for her pistol, but Mae repeated words Davis had once used while giving her acupuncture, and Zula recognized her daughter. Overruling the ship's synthetic Erynis, she sent Mae down with Ackerman's unit to learn in the field, because Davis had made Mae for that reason.

When Zula woke from her g-chair after a hard maneuver, Mae recalled that the spinal injury of her first mission had left her mother with physical and emotional scars from surgery after surgery. Captain Olivia Shipp and Lieutenant Ray Ackerman led the ground fighting, and Zula promised a second ship at the tailings to lift the last survivors. In cargo bay E7 she met the three generals who funded the Jackals, Christian Cunningham, Kasey Ristic and Washington Sekiguchi. The mission ended with orders to find out who was flying the Engineer bombers.

Before the meeting at Pylos Station, base of the Knot, Mae told Zula that the ship AI EWA had tried to kill her. Zula decided that a synthetic made by a synthetic would frighten too many people, so she ordered EWA and Erynis returned to factory settings and kept Mae's nature secret. She promised Mae a new body and planned to introduce her only as her daughter. At the meeting Cunningham warned that the bomber hunt would make or break the Jackals.

Raiding Minos Station

Alien: Seventh Circle followed Zula as she chased the bomber on stims and coffee while her troops slept in cryo. A scarred Bishop named Rook docked with the Blackstar and handed her a disc that pointed toward Minos Station, an industrial station tethered by a space elevator to the ice world Dimitar. The Fury was too damaged to go on hunting, so she came in under a repair cover and committed to a raid. She factory-reset the ship AI and its synthetic so they would treat Mae as human.

Before Rook arrived, the bomber ambushed the Righteous Fury in a debris field after the Fury left the orbital well of Sedna. The alien ship turned Mae's missiles aside with small gravity wells and hurled rocks that destroyed two dropships and breached two decks. Ronny Yoo proposed ejecting the cryo pods toward the planet Plutarch II, but Zula refused to lose anyone and turned the undamaged side of the ship toward the enemy. Every railgun and missile kept firing until the bomber slowed.

Zula and Shipp went planet-side with Red Team, where a valley of human bones and crates of comatose young adults showed the work of a training ground for controllable Xenomorphs. She would not burn the chamber with the young people inside. Deeper in, the Jackals found the chamber Weyland-Yutani had built for a captive Xenomorph Queen, with more of her brood held in plastic cells. Zula held fire, judged that flamethrowers could not clear the nest and planned a nuclear strike from the Fury in orbit. When the station fell, she ordered the Fury abandoned in cryo pods.

With the last Jackals trapped, a splinter copy of Mae, Red Mae, offered to stay behind. Zula begged her not to and embraced her before leading the survivors away. Red Mae died blowing the hive mouth so that the last six Jackals could climb to the elevator. The Bishop Rook, who had brought Mae back from the darkness, gave his life on Minos so that a young station worker named Lenny could survive. Zula came up holding the injured Shipp, with discs of proof from Minos in her webbing.

Final Fate

Zula was last seen alive in Alien: Seventh Circle, leaving Minos Station on the Righteous Fury with the last of her Jackals, her daughter Mae and the proof she had taken from the station. Earlier in 2186, in Alien: Colony War, the dying Davis asked his friend Chad McLaren to find Zula and make sure she was safe. That novel ended with Chad and his companions wanted across several powers and unable to return to Earth, and Chad decided they had to find her, though he had no idea where she was. No later story has shown what became of her, and her fate remains open.

Weapons And Equipment

Zula Hendricks holds a pulse rifle beneath a Xenomorph in Aliens: Defiance

Zula carried a rifle on the Europa and pulse rifles from Jericho 3 to Purdan, the weapon line covered in the pulse rifle variants of the Corps. She liked a weapon she could point at a threat and fire, and she lost hers twice, once on her first mission and again in the chaos aboard the Europa. At Wright-Aberra she fought with an energy rifle, and on Earth she fired a missile into a corporate tower to free Amanda. Grenades, breaching charges and a sidearm also passed through her hands.

Davis was often part of her equipment, riding in her rifle, a portable pod, a personal assistant device or her wrist terminal. Her hairclip hid a micro-transmitter on the test moon, and she wore a full brace from hips to shoulders during her time on the Europa. As a colonel she commanded the Righteous Fury, its synth squads, Sunspot Good Boys and Pinpoint drones. She gave Mae a bowie knife, which her daughter carried in her boot and used to kill a David unit on Minos.

Personality And Traits

Zula Hendricks in a painted portrait from Aliens: Defiance

Zula measured herself against a harsh standard of no weakness, no mercy and no hesitation, and she worked three times as hard as anyone asked. The spinal injury from her first mission shaped her more than any battle, leaving her braced, in constant pain and dependent on painkillers on the Europa. She hid that pain from the synthetics, refused to be counted out and trained her body back with a stubbornness that bordered on spite. Even after surgery let her walk and run again, her back ached under a pulse rifle on Jericho 3, and she never lost her distaste for medical tables.

She was loyal to people over institutions, turning on the Corps and the company when both treated a living weapon as a prize. Her bond with Davis outlasted every body he wore, and she trusted him when she trusted almost no other synthetic. Amanda became her closest friend and partner, and Alec Brand joined the Marines because of the two women. In later life she was a weary but unbending commander who saw her fight as endless cleaning up, and she softened only slowly toward the daughter Davis had left her.

Behind The Scenes

Zula Hendricks was created by writer Brian Wood for Aliens: Defiance, the twelve-issue Dark Horse series begun in April 2016, with art in the first issues by Tristan Jones. Wood returned to her in Aliens: Resistance and Aliens: Rescue in 2019, both with colors by Dan Jackson. Tim Waggoner gave her a novel of her own in Alien: Prototype in 2019, and Keith R.A. DeCandido tied her to Amanda in his Alien: Isolation novelization the same year. Philippa Ballantine and Clara Carija made her the commander of the Jackals in Alien: Inferno's Fall in 2022 and Alien: Seventh Circle in 2025.

In Alien: Rogue Incursion, released by Survios on December 19, 2024, Zula was voiced by Andia Winslow, with Robbie Daymond as Davis 01. Writer Alex White placed the game in 2142, between Resistance and Rescue, and Variety reported that her spinal injury was written into the way she moved in virtual reality. Seventh Circle gave her date of birth as 28 October 2119 in a Combine library file that listed her as a deserter from the Corps. Some fan sources add a middle initial and a service number, which the works checked for this article do not confirm.

Conclusion

Zula Hendricks went from a street recruit broken on her first mission to the colonel of a secret multinational brigade, and the injury that ended her service as a private shaped every year that followed. She gave up her uniform rather than hand Weyland-Yutani a living weapon, then fought the same company beside Amanda Ripley and Davis across Earth, a test moon and Purdan. She lost Amanda, then Davis, and carried on with a synthetic daughter. She left Minos Station alive with the proof she had come for.
