Rebecca "Newt" Jorden was the first child born at Hadley's Hope on LV-426, and the only colonist the USS Sulaco team found alive in Aliens. She spent weeks in the ducts after the hive killed her family, left the moon with Ellen Ripley, Corporal Dwayne Hicks, and a wrecked Bishop, and drowned when their EEV hit Fury 161 at the start of Alien 3. Alien: River of Pain and Aliens: Newt's Tale give her the background before that rescue, from the first newborn on Acheron to the last stand in the vents.
Biography
Childhood At Hadley's Hope
According to Alien: River of Pain, Newt was born on 15 March 2173 at Hadley's Hope, after Anne Jorden's seventeen-hour labor under Dr. Theodora Komiskey, with med staff Joel Asher assisting and Russ Jorden at the bedside. The colony waited on its first newborn, and Anne nicknamed the infant her little newt in the delivery room. The name stuck as Rebecca "Newt" Jorden. Administrator W. Alan Simpson later opened the recreational center around that birth, using the baby as proof that Acheron could hold families and not only survey crews.
By 2179 she was six, living with Russ, Anne, and her older brother Tim among the wider Hadley's Hope colonists. Everybody called her Newt, and only Tim used Rebecca. The children ran Monster Maze games through the laundry vents and air shafts with friends such as Aaron, while the adults fought over company orders and the arrival of Colonial Marine captain Demian Brackett. Newt fixed on small constants: cherry freeze-pops from cook Bronagh Flaherty, and Casey, the doll that later went into the ducts with her. A colony photograph shows her in a grey dress, smiling, with a plastic cup in her hand.
Finding The Derelict
Newt left Hadley's Hope with Russ, Anne, and Tim on the morning after 19 June 2179, after Simpson pulled Russ from the bar with Weyland-Yutani orders for a survey to fixed coordinates, not a random grid run. Brackett had banned Marine escorts for civilian jobs, so the family went out in the crawler without rifles beside them. Science director Dr. Bartholomew Reese and senior biologist Dr. Mori recognized those coordinates as the old Nostromo landing site and treated the trip as the specimen chance they had been waiting for. Assistant ops manager Brad Lydecker handled the radio side of the claim.
Newt rode in the rover between Tim and Anne while the adults closed on the wreck. Inside the derelict, Anne and Russ found fossilized crew in armored blue-gray carapaces before they reached the egg chamber, and the ship held more dead pilots in the halls than the single chair from Alien. A Facehugger sealed onto Russ. Anne got the children and the crawler far enough for Brackett's heavy-crawler team to recover them on 22 June, and Reese smiled at the parasite in the garage while the rest of the colony recoiled.
Russ Dies In Medlab
Komiskey first treated Russ in Medlab, then Reese's team pushed the company's capture-for-study orders over Brackett's wish to kill the thing. In Aliens: Newt's Tale, painted by John Bolton and written by Mike Richardson for Dark Horse in 1992, colony doctor Dr. Kent held that same watch. He kept Russ on the table until they understood what had attached to him, and he refused Anne when she wanted to take her husband back to their quarters. River of Pain later aligned the children's vantage with that comic: Tim and Newt crawled the Monster Maze ducts and watched through a grate.
The Chestburster tore out of Russ in front of them. Newt's Tale puts her on the other side of the vent with tears on her face while the staff freeze over the table. The newborn went into the ducts or the Medlab chaos before anyone could stop it, and Facehugger patients multiplied after that. Private Joplin Konig chestbursted in the same ward, and the slaughter that followed took Sergeant Coughlin and science assistant Wes Navarro.
The Colony Holdout
By late June the Marines and Lydecker's ops crew were sealing corridors and packing survivors into defended pockets while Warriors dragged people toward a nest under Atmosphere Processor One. Reese argued that one of the early Facehuggers had produced a Queen, so the hive no longer needed constant trips back to the derelict. Newt's Tale puts the remaining families behind armed men in those halls, with Newt and Tim still among them while Anne kept a pistol close.
An armed nest party under colonist Drapers went into the processor and later came back looking blank and half-dead. Survivors opened the doors themselves, thinking live colonists were behind them, and the hive was right behind. River of Pain gives the same breach to Marine sergeant Marvin Draper, a different man. Anne pushed a group out of a failing storage holdout into the surveyors' operations center, a hard-walled room with one way in and out, and took a pistol for her children rather than trust someone else's aim. Bill Andrews went with her, found a hand-welder, and stood in the front line when those doors opened.
Tim Is Killed
Anne shoved Newt into a vent when the ops doors went, and that shaft was the same Monster Maze run Tim had treated as a game. Tim, nearly ten, stayed in the room with a pistol instead of following her. He fired on the first adult Xenomorph through the door, and its acid blood hit his face before he could reach the vent. Newt called him back from the shaft too late.
Anne Is Killed
Anne was still in the ops room after Tim went down, with the Warrior inside the door. She fired into the Alien's head and jaw until she went down on the floor. Newt watched from the shaft and called for the mother who had promised not to leave her. The boy lay near Anne with the gun still in his hand.
Brackett later reached that ops room and found both bodies. He had known Anne on Earth before she married Russ, and he had spent his first weeks on Acheron watching the family from the edge of their kitchen arguments. The hive killed Tim and then Anne in that breach. Newt was gone into the ductwork, and the vent she had used was empty when he got there.
Alone In The Ducts
Newt's Tale follows her out of the ops room with Casey under her arm while adult Xenomorphs fill the corridor behind her. She already knew the vent map from Monster Maze, and that knowledge kept her off the patrol routes the hive used to move hosts toward the processor. She scavenged food, hid in junk rooms and air shafts, and stayed quiet when the walls moved. Brackett believed she had died with Anne and Tim, then left Acheron on a secret science ship with Lieutenant Julisa Paris, Dr. Mori, and colonist child Luisa Cantrell. Those four left Acheron, and weeks passed with no relief before the Sulaco unit arrived in early July.
Newt's Hiding Hole
The Sulaco Marines entered Hadley's Hope under Sergeant Apone, with Lieutenant Gorman holding command from the APC and Ripley riding as a consultant. Barricades, spent casings, and empty rooms were all they found at first, plus motion tracker hits that led into the processor hive instead of living settlers. The one live reading that was not a Warrior came from a child in a vent junction whose wall plate read AIRWAY. Newt sat on a crate among boxes, a wrecked doll, beads, and laundry, thin and dirty after weeks alone, and she called the space her hole. Ripley crawled in after her, and Newt stayed with her.
Found By The Marines
The Marines pulled her out of the hole after she bolted from the first reach, bit Hicks on the hand, and ran a baseboard duct into that nest. Corpsman Dietrich sat her down in Operations, wrapped a monitor cuff around her arm, and found hunger and exhaustion, not a wound and not a Facehugger. Gorman used the name Rebecca, got nothing, and left the office. Ripley washed the dirt off her face, put a cup of instant chocolate in her hands, and stayed until the child would speak. She told them she was Newt, and she would not put Casey down.
The Atmosphere Processor Escape
Ripley kept Newt close when the squad pushed into the processor and the floor opened into resin and cocooned settlers. The Warriors hit while Apone's fireteams were inside the nest. Hicks held the retreat and Ripley drove the APC into the chaos. Some of the Marines died in that room, including Drake, who went down when acid hit him covering the pullback. About two or three, among them Apone and Dietrich, were dragged away alive. What was left of the unit got out with Gorman unconscious. Newt sat through that pullback in the vehicle, then stood with Ripley on top of the APC, on the road between the processor and the colony, while the first dropship came apart.
Ferro and Spunkmeyer died when a stowaway Warrior hit the cockpit, and the crash stranded the survivors on the surface with the processor counting down toward overload. Hicks ordered salvage from the wrecks and moved everyone into the operations wing, including Hudson, Vasquez, Burke, and Bishop. Newt stayed at Ripley's side through that move, from the wreck on the road into the colony block they meant to hold until the second dropship arrived.
Bonding With Ripley In Medlab
The survivors used the colony ward as a holding room for Newt while Bishop remote-piloted another dropship from the telemetry mast. Ripley carried her into the operating room when she could barely stay awake, sat with her in the dark, and let her talk about Casey and the night hours in the vents. Newt did not want to sleep because of the dreams, so Ripley put the PDT tracker bracelet from Hicks on her wrist, left a heater by the bed, and pointed out the camera in the next room. Ripley then went to check on Gorman with Bishop and let Hicks walk her through the pulse rifle. When she came back, Newt was asleep under the cot with Casey, so Ripley laid the rifle on the mattress and crawled under the bed with her.
Attacked By Facehuggers
Company man Carter Burke locked Ripley and Newt in the ward and opened the stasis cylinders, and two live Facehuggers came over the floor. Ripley boosted Newt onto the surgical table, triggered the sprinklers to call the others, and fought one crawler off her own face in the dark. Newt pinned the second against the wall with a desk and held it there until Hudson pulled her clear and blasted it. Hicks came through the observation glass, and he and Gorman got the other Facehugger off Ripley's throat. The holdout turned on Burke from that moment.
Escape Through The Ducts
The ops holdout ended when the sentry guns burned through their ammo and the hive cut the power. Warriors came through the drop ceiling, clinging to the pipes above the acoustic tiles, and dropped into the room. Ripley scooped Newt and ran for Medical, but Burke locked both med-lab doors from the inside. A Warrior dragged Hudson under the floor grating as the rest piled into the corridor.
Newt opened a low air vent in the annex and led Ripley, Hicks, Gorman, and Vasquez into the shafts she had used for weeks. She called the turns toward the landing field while Hicks raised Bishop on the radio and learned the second dropship was about sixteen minutes out. Warriors boxed them in the duct, and a Warrior dropped on Vasquez from a vertical shaft. Acid burned into her thigh, Gorman crawled back for her, and the two of them detonated grenades rather than be taken alive.
Taken By The Hive
That grenade blast sent Newt down a steep chute. Hicks caught her jacket, she slid out of it, and she dropped into a flooded subbasement. Ripley went after her, took the wrong fork, and called Hicks down with the locator. They found her under a floor grate, standing in water up to her waist, and Hicks started cutting the bars.
A Warrior rose from the water behind her while the sparks were still falling, and it took her before they could kick the grate through. Casey's head was left floating in the dark water. Hicks pulled Ripley to an elevator at the end of the tunnel, where another Warrior jammed an arm in the doors. Hicks killed it at close range, and acid ran across his armor and the side of his face. He stayed on his feet long enough to reach Bishop and the second dropship at the colony. Bishop flew them onto a landing platform on Atmosphere Processor One. They traded first names there, Dwayne and Ellen, then Ripley left him on the ship and went down into the processor for Newt.
Cocooned In The Hive
The hive carried her into the processor nest and wrapped her in resin the same way it had wrapped the colonists, in a pillar at the edge of the egg cluster. Webs held her with only her face and one hand free. Ripley tracked the PDT locator into the catacombs and found the empty bracelet on the tunnel floor. She heard Newt scream when an egg opened in front of her and a Facehugger started out of it.
Ripley's Rescue
Ripley reached the egg chamber as the Facehugger tensed to leap, shot it, killed a Warrior beside the pillar, and tore Newt out of the wall. Newt went onto her back through the belts of the battle harness and told Ripley she had known she would come. They came face to face with the Queen over the egg sac. Ripley put grenades into the sac, torched the eggs, and ran for the freight elevators as the nest came apart.
They reached the freight elevators with the Queen behind them. Another cage came down, and Ripley rode it up with Newt clinging to her. They came out on the landing platform to an empty pad. Bishop had lifted off because the platform was coming apart, circled, and came back for them as the Queen rose in the other elevator. The atmosphere processor detonated behind the flight, and Hadley's Hope went with it. Newt left Acheron in Ripley's arms after the processor wrecked the colony.
Queen's Attack On The Sulaco
On the Sulaco hangar deck the Queen came out of the dropship's landing gear, tore Bishop in half, and went after Newt next. She screamed as the Queen closed on her and crawled under the wrecked android while Ripley ran for the cargo cage and climbed into a P-5000. Hicks was too burned and too full of sedatives to stand that fight. Newt stayed on the deck through Ripley's fight in the loader and the Queen going into the lock.
Almost Sucked Out The Airlock
When Ripley opened the airlock to dump the Queen, the hangar lost its air and Newt was pulled toward the open lock. Bishop, cut through the waist, held her on the deck until the lock cycled. The Queen hung on the sill and caught Ripley's ankle before the outer doors took her into space. Four people left LV-426: Ripley, Hicks, Newt, and what was left of Bishop.
Hypersleep
After the hangar fight they put Newt into a cryotube beside Ripley, her face quiet on the pillow, the lid doubling her in the glass. Hicks went in burned from the acid on LV-426. The survivors put Bishop into a tube with them for the ride home, wrecked from the Queen. The Sulaco left Acheron orbit with those four tubes occupied, bound for Earth.
Facehugger On The Tube
In Alien 3 the USS Sulaco was in the Neroid Sector, halfway from LV-426 to Earth, when the cryogenic bay went up. A mystery egg had opened somewhere on the ship, and a Facehugger climbed Newt's cylinder while the four of them slept. The crawler was on the glass over her face when its acid blood started the fire in that bay. The Sulaco ejected their occupied Emergency Escape Vehicle before anyone in those tubes could wake.
Drowning
The EEV came down in the sea off Fury 161, an Outer Veil ore refinery and prison, and hit hard enough to crack the occupied tubes. Seawater filled Newt's cylinder while she was under, and she drowned in that water before the prisoners hauled the wreck onto the rock.
Dark Horse's Alien 3 comic goes further than the film or the novel: a Royal Facehugger had implanted her, then the Queen Chestburster left her drowning body through the mouth and swam the flooded EEV to Ripley's face. That is why Clemens later opened Newt and found nothing growing. The embryo had changed hosts in the water.
Death
Medical officer Clemens found Ripley in the surf and sent prisoners back for the wreck. Oxen hauled the EEV into reach of the mine's last working external crane. The men found Hicks run through the chest by a support beam, Newt drowned in the flooded cylinder, and Bishop thrown aside as scrap. The EEV computer labeled her an unidentified female, about twelve years old, because nobody on Fiorina had a colony file to put a name on the body.
Superintendent Harry Andrews logged a time-delay transmission tagged for the Company and promised the prisoners a rescue ship. Ripley walked to the wreck once she could stand and saw the cracked tube for herself. Acid stain on the cylinder, and the way the computer had no name for the child, sent her to the morgue next.
Autopsy
Clemens pulled the covered tray from a morgue wall while Ripley and prisoner orderly Aaron stood in the cold room. Ripley had seen the acid on the tube and wanted the chest opened, but she told Clemens they were checking for cholera when she was looking for an embryo. He went along with the disease story, made the cut, and found nothing growing.
Funeral
Dillon shut the leadworks so the men could attend a cremation in the old smelter, a chamber cut from rock above the ore body. Prisoners in robes lowered two wrapped forms toward the furnace, Newt and Hicks together, while Ripley watched the only people she had gotten off LV-426 go into the fire. That funeral is the same in the theatrical cut and the Special Edition. The Runner later called the Dragon came from a Rottweiler in the theatrical print and from an ox in the Special Edition.
Alternate Fates
Alien 3 kills her in the opening and then spends the rest of the film on Ripley. Other stories refused that cut and kept Hicks and Newt in play, sometimes as themselves and sometimes under other names. Five of those paths keep her alive after the crash.
Earth Hive
Dark Horse's original Earth Hive trilogy, Outbreak, Nightmare Asylum, and Female War, also called Earth War, picked up about 13 years after Aliens with Hicks and Newt alive. Hicks carried psychological and physical scarring from LV-426. Newt had nightmares and spent time locked in a mental institution before the pair went back into the field. They ended up helping fight a Xenomorph infestation on Earth, with Ripley appearing in Female War in a smaller role.
Those comics were in print before Alien 3 reached theatres, so they treated the Sulaco survivors as a continuing cast. After the film killed Hicks and Newt on screen, later printings renamed them Wilks and Billie, and rewrote Ripley as an android built from her records so the books no longer contradicted the movie. The original lettering keeps her name and age.
William Gibson's Alien 3
William Gibson's unused Alien 3 scripts kept the Sulaco survivors alive and then wrote Newt out of the fight. She was sent to her grandparents on Earth while Ripley stayed in a coma and Hicks and Bishop carried the story on Anchorpoint station against the Union of Progressive Peoples. Dark Horse adapted the second draft as a five-issue comic from late 2018 into 2019. Newt left for Earth in those pages and did not return for the station outbreak.
Pat Cadigan's 2021 Titan novel follows Gibson's first draft instead. Anchorpoint was larger and more crowded there, the infestation ran through the station, and the strain spread by air as well as by the old egg cycle. Newt's exit matched the comic: she was shipped toward Earth. Hicks and Bishop walked off the station at the end of both versions.
Alien 5
Neill Blomkamp developed an alternate sequel, later talked about as Alien 5, that would have ignored Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection and picked up decades after Aliens. Ripley, Hicks, and Newt were all meant to return, with the colony survivors treated as a family that had gotten to grow older instead of dying in an EEV. Tom Woodruff Jr. shot stand-in pictures as an acid-scarred Hicks with a pulse rifle, and Blomkamp released concept work for the older cast. The film was set aside when Ridley Scott went ahead with Alien: Covenant. Surviving concept work shows her as an adult with short blonde hair, not the child from the vents. Fox never shot a finished script, and the project was cancelled.
Resurrection Clone
During early work on Resurrection, producer Jorge Saralegui and writer Joss Whedon built a roughly 30-page treatment that cloned Newt instead of Ripley. The story sat only a few years after Alien 3, not centuries later, and sent an adult Newt copy out with a crew to locate and secure Xenomorph specimens. The Company treated her like a living scout, using the Hadley's Hope survival skills while the crew resented the clone. Saralegui looked at actresses such as Patricia Arquette before the studio pushed to bring Sigourney Weaver back.
Weaver refused the Newt-clone version, and the numbered Ripley 8 tanks became the sequel that got shot. A remnant of the idea remains in the Special Edition, where Ripley 8 stops at a photograph of a young girl. The clone Newt never reached a finished film.
The Predator Ending
One unused ending for The Predator brings her back as a grown woman. Breanna Watkins played the part. The cut identifies her on screen as Rebecca Jorden and puts her in a Weyland-Yutani branded mask shaped like a Facehugger. The scene hints at time travel and a crossover, then stops there. The footage was shot and then dropped. The released film ends on the Predator Killer suit instead.
Newt In Comics
Newt's Tale remains the main comic about her childhood and the fall of the colony. Hungary's 1987 film comic A Bolygó Neve: Halál, drawn by Attila Fazekas for the Filmsikerek Képregény Változata line, is a semi-official Aliens adaptation with Newt on the cover beside Ripley.
Marvel's Aliens: What If? put her back on the dropship and the Sulaco for a short stretch, when Burke slipped free of the resin after Vasquez and Gorman's grenade, hid aboard the outgoing flight, and watched Ripley fight the Queen in the cargo bay. Once Ripley, Hicks, Bishop, and Newt were in hypersleep, he started the fire that jettisoned the EEV toward Fiorina. Aliens: Field Report, the 2014 Dark Horse Presents short by Chris Roberson and Paul Lee, retells only the first half of Aliens and never shows her.
Merchandise
NECA's 7-inch Aliens Newt uses the torn blue overalls, dirty sculpt, and bare feet in sneakers from the holdout. The pack includes a second head in a Marine helmet, the damaged Casey doll head, a chem-light, and a colony identity card printed with her name. That card is the toy-line version of the photograph from Hadley's Hope, shrunk to a swipe badge. NECA also put her in the Rescuing Newt two-pack with Ripley for the film's 30th anniversary, the loader-bay pair rather than the vent child alone.
The original Kenner Aliens Space Marines line skipped her. Those comics sent Hicks, Apone, and Drake back into brightly painted bug hunts and left the colony girl off the cardbacks. Later MiniMates and other small lines picked her up in group packs, but the NECA 7-inch with Casey is the figure that copies the movie costume piece by piece, including both heads in one box.
Video Games
Konami's Aliens: The Arcade Game reached cabinets in 1990 as a side-scrolling retelling of the film. The flyer uses live actors who are not Sigourney Weaver and not Carrie Henn, a blonde Ripley in a tank top and a dark-haired child stand-in against a painted Xenomorph. The cabinet copy sold two-player play, a horizontal monitor, and buy-in continues. In the game itself she appears in story scenes rather than as a playable Marine.
Ripley drove an APC into the colony to reach her, then a flying Xenomorph carried the child off and turned the rest of the credit into a chase through pink Warriors, green Facehuggers, and the other color variants the board used for LV-426. That rescue-and-abduction loop was the arcade version of the hole, the sewers, and the Queen nest, compressed into one cabinet path. She did not get a later Konami sequel. Stasis Interrupted, the story DLC for Aliens: Colonial Marines, showed her cryotube.
Behind The Scenes
Casting director Mary Selway, who had cast the first film, hunted an American child in England, at US schools, and on UK military bases. About five hundred girls were taped, then nine went to Pinewood. Carrie Henn, eight, was photographed over lunch at school in Stoke-on-Trent. Her father was a US Air Force master sergeant at Lakenheath, and she turned nine on May 7.
From the first reading, producer Gale Anne Hurd treated Henn as the part. Weaver flew in on Concorde for a chemistry read. Henn's brother Christopher read with her and later played Tim, which is why the rover and Medlab scenes keep a real sibling pair in frame. Henn did not go on to a screen career after Aliens. On-set stills show her in the Marine helmet, sitting between Weaver and Michael Biehn at the APC table.
