Carter: The Knot's Rebuilt Synthetic
Carter was the companion synthetic of miner Toru McClintock-Riley and her family company, the Knot, in Philippa Ballantine's Alien: Inferno's Fall. Toru's sisters found him as a discarded pleasure model, rebuilt him for mine work, and gave him to her when she turned fifty. On the Union of Progressive Peoples world Shānmén, he ran rescues through the synthetic network, opened the door of a buried Engineer temple, and carried a child through the catacombs. He survived and headed for Pylos with Lena and Bai Yun.
Origin As A Pleasure Model
When Toru turned fifty, her sisters found Carter as a discarded pleasure model, refurbished and modified him heavily, tied a bow around his neck, and presented him at a party. The younger generation was embarrassed by the joke. Toru kept his original programming but developed his secondary functions for the Knot's real work. Carter was a companion synthetic, the field in which the Jùtóu Combine outclassed Weyland-Yutani even while it lagged in combat androids. He was tall and lean, with chiseled features, bright blue eyes, and warm hands, unlike most synthetics.
Pleasure models carried some of the best scanning systems of any synthetic line, because discretion was their trade, and Carter used his on rock, cages, and alien doors. Before the Combine let him work with the Knot, it changed his settings so he could not fire explosive charges, pointing to Weyland-Yutani's unexplained David 7 recalls. Toru also chose a failsafe phrase when she first received him, words she swore she would never say even in passion. Carter could tap into the mine's synthetic network, though Toru preferred to keep him off it to avoid viruses, and he held the mine schematics and the planet's biology files.
Biography
The Shaft Two Rescue
When an explosion tore through Shaft Two at Svarog Mine, Carter identified the blast through the synthetic network before the family reached it. He read five flatline personal data transmitters among the miners below and asked Toru whether she was ordering a rescue. Mine manager Kozak had bought recalled Davids on the black market, and Toru distrusted them. She put Carter in charge, told the Davids to obey him as they would her, and let him join the network for the emergency. He promised he would stay in full control and coordinated their search pattern below.
Falling Onto The Alien Door
Later a seismic slip jammed the shotcrete robot in a new sub-shaft of Shaft One. Carter kicked at it, though a companion synth lacked the build for heavy lifting, and the unstable rock gave way. Toru grabbed him as the machinery fell, and they dropped to the bottom of the shaft together. Carter cleared the dirt from her face, checked her head, and found the power coupling of their drilling rig crushed. Beside them was a tunnel that was no natural formation and a door with writing in at least three scripts. He cited Combine policy on reporting such finds, yet he also wanted wider database access to read the symbols.
The Family Vote
Back at the family habitat, Toru had Carter scan the room and hold a perimeter before she told the Knot what they had found. He backed her account of carved walls, a doorway, and writing. When the family weighed approaching the Brotherhood, a black-market organization, Carter warned of its bad reputation and suggested dealing with the Combine directly. He then ran the vote himself, siding with Lena and Jin Hua on sending word up the Combine chain. The vote went four to three for sending Nathan into New Luhansk to test the Brotherhood, and Carter shook his hand.
Sealing Shaft One
After Black Goo fell on New Luhansk, Carter warned that the electrified fence at Svarog would last only one or two hours. He and four Working Joes packed ANFO into the decline tunnel of Shaft One, and he helped Toru lay the charges, though his settings barred him from firing them. When creatures came through the dust after the blast, he gripped her arm and hauled her toward the cage without allowance for her age. Toru felt like the ball in a rugby match. Carter yanked open the cage door, reported that the Joes were failing, and judged that the collapse had sealed the shaft.
Pinar's Climb And The Rock Drills
Carter offered to ride a bucket up a drilled shaft to align the mine's antenna with the satellite, but the antenna needed a human retina scan. Pinar Osman-Riley went instead in her sealed shell and told him he was needed below. When her signal vanished, Carter held Toru up and told her he could not find it. He then reminded the family of the mine's two P-5000 power loaders, gathered rock drills, and led miners in stripping their safety limiters. Toru also ordered the locks on Carter removed so that everyone, including him, could hit a detonator.
The Kopat Tunnel
On perimeter duty in tunnel A1, Toru asked Carter whether he could feel fear. He said he knew the emotion and could mimic it if that would make her happier, and that fear was necessary for human survival. Then he heard scratching. Burrowing creatures broke through, and Carter yanked her back by the collar as her drill beam swung wild and weakened a concrete support. He fired the charges with his free hand and covered her body with his own. Looking unsettled for the first time, he named the creatures as Kopats, native burrowers changed by whatever had fallen on the town.
Guarding The Knot In The Core
In the crowded core, Carter backed Toru against mine manager Kozak and his armed guards, and he pulled brawling miners and guards apart during a fight over supplies. When security men raised their weapons with children in the crowd, he stepped forward to shield Jin Hua and the young ones. He carried seven-year-old Bai Yun on his back. When a ventilation shaft broke open and creatures poured in, Toru ordered him to get her family to safety. A flicker of hurt crossed his face, but he obeyed and ran back to the core.
Opening The Engineer Temple
Toru led the survivors to the door she and Carter had found, and only Carter had a chance of opening it. He traced the silvery liquid in the carved symbols until the door folded away, and he told the group to enter as penitents in a sacred place. Lena had never heard him use such words. Inside, he guided the column through glowing tunnels past murals of black creatures. When creatures attacked in the catacombs, he swung Bai Yun clear and threw a seismic charge with synthetic accuracy. Jin Hua and Da Shi were lost in the dark, and Carter, leaking fluid from a wound, forced Toru back to the next door.
The Hall Of The Giants
In a vast hall of Eitr channels and stacked jars, Carter pushed the Combine archaeologists Hewitt and Antonijevic onward past the finds. When Hewitt grabbed ampoules of black liquid, Carter caught him in a chokehold so Toru could take them back. A towering pale Engineer then woke in the shadows. Carter released Hewitt and pulled Lena back as Hewitt walked toward the giant and spoke in an unknown language. Toru threw an ampoule at it and set off the charges, and Carter waited for her before helping her over the rubble as the light in the hall died. Hewitt did not make it out.
The Failsafe Phrase
In the tunnels beyond, Carter fired his pistol at a pursuing builder creature to help Toru. After the group split, he spotted the SOS rhythm on Lena's personal data transmitter and showed Toru that her daughter was alive. When the builders closed in again, Toru's hip failed, and Carter dropped back to her side as his nature required. Toru spoke the failsafe phrase for the first time and ordered him to protect Lena and Bai Yun first. He acknowledged the command and sped after them, leaving her behind to slow the giants.
Toru's Last Stand On The Dropship
Aboard the Jackals' dropship, Carter took a place beside Bai Yun with a face that looked more complex than a synth's should, and Toru promised herself she would apologize to him at Pylos. Then the mutated archaeologist Antonijevic turned on them in the cargo bay. Carter angled his body between the creature and Lena and Bai Yun, as ordered. He met Toru's eyes, and she believed he had already calculated her plan. He did not stop her when she opened the bay door, grabbed the mutation, and fell with it into the clouds of Shānmén. She trusted that her daughter, granddaughter, and lover would reach Pylos.
Personality And Traits
Carter was calm, logical, and kind in manner. He reported a seismic slip as calmly as if he were serving dinner while perched above an open shaft. He never questioned Toru on leadership, Pinar on Eitr, or Jin Hua on communications, except when a human was in danger. He spent hours staring at a moving star map of the middle heavens beside his cot. He had downloaded rugby rules to understand Toru, teased her for holding back science at the alien door, and gave a human-like shrug after a brawl.
Toru kept reminding herself that Carter acted from logic rather than feeling, yet his loyalty often looked like love. He volunteered for the most dangerous tasks, from the antenna climb to carrying both rock drills on patrol, and he would not leave her side without a direct order. At the temple door he spoke with a reverence that unsettled Lena. After the catacomb losses, Toru beat on his chest and blamed him for protecting her instead of her family, because his programming put her first. By the end she wanted to apologize to him.
Relationships
Toru McClintock-Riley owned Carter, and the two were lovers. After his arrival she gave up the miners and engineers she used to take to bed. She hid her trust in him from other miners, who mocked such pairings, and laced her fingers with his only when she thought no one was watching. In private she held his warm hand in the dark, and in her last thoughts she counted him among her loved ones. Her daughter Lena Waipapa-Riley respected him, though she still remembered him as a cheap gag gift from her aunts.
Bai Yun found Carter soothing and walked with her hand in his, or rode on his back through the catacombs. Jin Hua saw him as the one best prepared to handle the child's fear because he did not feel it, and she did not mind her mother's relationship with him. Nathan Bennetts-Riley felt scruffy beside him and saw him as his aunt's indulgence. Pinar and Carter were often deep in conversation on the surface. After Toru's death, Carter, Lena, and Bai Yun stayed close together and kept to their quarters.
Last Known Status
Carter survived the events of Inferno's Fall. In the epilogue, the synthetic Mae Hendricks watched him, Lena, and Bai Yun grieve together aboard the Jackals' ship. Carter fetched food and brought it back to the others. Mae wanted to probe his program to learn whether his feelings were real, but she remembered her father's caution and left them alone. The humans then entered cryosleep for the crossing to Pylos station. Carter does not appear in Alien: Seventh Circle, the next novel about Mae and the Jackals.
Behind The Scenes
Philippa Ballantine wrote Carter for Alien: Inferno's Fall, from a story she developed with Clara Fei-Fei Carija, and Titan Books published the novel. Carija had consulted on Aliens: Phalanx and Alien: Into Charybdis before co-writing the story. The authors thanked editor Steve Saffel for believing their Antipodean partnership could work and for supporting female and trans authors writing female characters. Ballantine was a New Zealand-born fantasy writer whose earlier work included the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences series with her husband, Tee Morris.
Conclusion
Carter was a discarded pleasure synthetic that Toru's sisters rebuilt as a joke gift, and he became the Knot's most dependable worker and Toru's lover. On Shānmén he led the Shaft Two rescue, fell with Toru onto the alien door, helped seal Shaft One, opened the Engineer temple, and fought through the catacombs. Toru's failsafe phrase sent him to protect Lena and Bai Yun, and he guarded them in the dropship as she gave her life for them. He last appeared grieving with them on the voyage to Pylos.
