Rook was the science officer synthetic on Renaissance Station in Alien: Romulus, a Weyland-Yutani unit with the same face as Ash. He held the Xenomorph from the Nostromo wreck for a compound called Z-01. Big Chap tore him in half during the outbreak on the station. He was wired into a lab console when Rain Carradine's crew boarded, and he tried to send the sample to Jackson's Star before the station broke up in the rings of LV-410.
Biography
The Nostromo Specimen
In 2142, twenty years after the Nostromo, Rook was in the Remus lab in Marvel's Alien: Romulus prequel when a recovery ship brought a cocoon in from the wreck near LV-426. Scientist Mattos stood with him in the sealed lab. Rook treated the outer shell as inert resin and had the cocoon cut open. The mass inside held hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon, and oxygen, and a probe on the shell drew a hot reaction.
Mattos thought the creature had killed seven of the Nostromo crew. Rook corrected the count. Six were dead, and one had escaped. That survivor was Ellen Ripley, who blew the organism out of the Narcissus in Alien. Security officers Hyla and Adrian Kopecky wanted the cocoon destroyed. Hyla had lost an eye as a Colonial Marine on LV-147, clearing local life off a mineral moon before terraforming, and she did not trust a synthetic to keep the specimen on the station. Rook and the Remus science team locked it on a cryogenic rig that held the internal temperature below freezing. When the arm jerked, he called it a muscle spasm. The rig was holding the creature, and he treated the lab as under control.
Remus Experiments
Days later Rook logged a DNA harvest and had Mother record it. He called the organism a mix of human tissue and a parasite, the creature designated XX121. From that DNA he grew an egg and then the second stage, cloned Facehuggers. Samples from those Facehuggers held the part of the creature that let it grow so fast, and he tied the work to the search that had occupied Peter Weyland. Mattos wanted the specimen for the weapons division. Rook refused the weapons use and aimed the work at a treatment for humans.
The Bioweapons Division ordered the parasitoids moved to the Romulus module and took half of his stock. They left him no more than five people on Remus and sent everyone else to the Romulus lab. A human superior cut off his objection. Rook worked for them, and the division would not wait. He called the fluid inside XX121 a possible cure and tried to hold the research together on Remus after the stock was split.
The Station Outbreak
Hyla and Adrian waited until the scientists were busy, entered Remus, and broke the cryochamber open with an axe. Big Chap came off the rig at once and killed Adrian. Rook found the body on the table and went back to the console. Compound Z-01 was at 75 percent, and he called the Romulus lab to start Phase 01 trials while the creature was loose. In that lab a technician injected a rat. Big Chap crossed to Romulus, smashed the parasitoid cases the division had taken, and the cloned Facehuggers took the staff in the module, including Mattos.
The Station Seal
Rook gave Hyla a tracker keyed to the Xenomorph's body heat and took the creature's path as a move toward the young parasitoids. He warned her off a shot. The creature's acid blood could open the hull, and Renaissance could stand a few seconds of vacuum only if she killed it where the emergency seals could close. Processing was at 96 percent while they hunted. Hyla shot Big Chap down with her F44AA pulse rifle, and the acid burned through the decks. Mother reported Z-01 at 100 percent. Rook called the batch perfect, named it Prometheus fire, and triggered the seal-station protocol.
Decompression pulled Hyla and the rest of the human crew into space. Big Chap had torn Rook open, and white fluid leaked from the wound as he crawled through the breach to save the compound. The rat from the Phase 01 injection was alive on a lab monitor when the station locked. Renaissance was left sealed, full of corpses and Facehugger cases, until scavengers from Jackson's Star docked.
The Scavenger Crew
Rain, Andy, and Tyler Harrison found Rook bisected and cabled into a console in a lab that looked like a chemical spill. Rain pulled the module from his head so Andy could open a locked door on the Corbelan IV run for cryo fuel. The chip did more than raise Andy's clearance. It rewrote the ND-255's mind and started repairing his motors. When they woke Rook, his priority was Z-01, and every other order was cancelled.
His order was to leave Navarro and run, or to kill her if they would not leave her. The Facehugger on her face was implanting Plagiarus Praepotens, a seed that would combine with her DNA and grow into an XX121 Xenomorph. The blood was sulfuric and hydrofluoric acid, and the body had been on Renaissance for 170 days. He put the odds at 60 to 40 that the implantation was finished. Tyler froze the tail with cryo fuel, and the others pulled the Facehugger off. Rook would not let Navarro back onto the hauler.
The New Directive
After the Corbelan crashed into the Romulus hangar, Rook spoke to Andy through the new chip. He called the ND-255 a model the company had used widely in colonization, and he introduced himself as science officer Rook. Andy's written order was to do what was best for Rain. The upgrade replaced that line. Rook's order was to finish the mission, and Andy asked what was required of him. Rook asked Mother whether compound Z-01 was intact, and the new order sent Andy, Rain, and Tyler toward the Romulus lab to collect it.
Prometheus Fire
In Romulus Beta Lab, which needed A-1 clearance, Rook had Andy give Rain and Tyler the case for the compound. The colonies were failing under heat, new diseases, and mine fumes, and he treated humans as too fragile for space. The fluid came from parasitoids he had grown from Xenomorph DNA. Processed in the lab, he called it Prometheus fire, the compound Peter Weyland had died trying to find, and the gift he meant to bring back for humanity. It carried the part of the genome that let a Xenomorph speed or slow its metabolism, and it rewrote a host through the blood. His plan was to detect the vials on the hauler, open the docking bay, and set the autopilot for Jackson's Star.
The Closed Door
He would not open the last door for Rain and Andy. Adult Xenomorphs were outside, and he would not risk the compound. He could not lie about their chances, and he offered them his sympathies, the same words Ash had used on the Nostromo. On the hauler he tried to take the Corbelan through Kay Harrison's console so he could fly the sample out. When Rain and Andy reached the ship, a message was on its way to headquarters. A company ship would need six months to reach Jackson's Star and collect the sample. Rain cut the channel.
Death
The channel closed on Rook while he called Rain and Andy insignificant in the larger plan. Renaissance struck the rings of LV-410 and broke up with him aboard. The impact destroyed the station, the hive, and Rook. The retrieval he had described, a company ship at Jackson's Star in six months, never reached him. The hauler was not on the autopilot he had set, and the Z-01 sample left with Rain.
Kay had injected a dose of that sample in the elevator. The compound Rook had finished on Remus rewrote the pregnancy on the flight out. In the cryo bay she delivered a small egg, and the Offspring grew out of that shell and killed her. Rain opened the cargo hold and dumped the creature into the rings of LV-410. She set the Corbelan on a course for Yvaga III, with Andy in a cryopod beside her. Rook had gone down with the station.
Personality And Traits
The module he carried replaced a personal directive with a company one. On Andy, that meant doing what was best for Weyland-Yutani, not what Rain's father had written. Rook counted a Facehugger that had locked on as a finished implantation, and he left Navarro off the ship rather than risk the sample. He would not open a door if an adult Xenomorph could come through it. He presented Z-01 as a cure for colonies that were failing.
Similar Androids
Rook wore Ash's face, the science officer Parker wrecked in the Nostromo mess after the attack on Ripley. That head went on talking once the body was opened, and Ash was the one who could not lie to Ripley about her chances. Rook used those words again on Renaissance when he left Rain and Andy at a closed door. Both units put the company's specimen ahead of the people on the ship. Aliens had identified that older Hyperdyne face as a 120-A/2, and Alien: Romulus does not give Rook a separate model number.
Rook and Thia had a few similarities. Both were Weyland-Yutani science synthetics, and both were cut in half and remained functional. Thia was a research synthetic in Predator: Badlands, played by Elle Fanning. The Kalisk cut her in half on Genna during a company expedition, and she remained functional from the waist up. Dek carried that half on his back while they crossed the planet. Her twin, Tessa, stayed with the company mission. Rook remained with the Z-01 sample until Renaissance broke up in the rings. Thia left the company order and went with Dek.
Behind The Scenes
The script started with a woman science officer, written as a half-body makeup on an actress. Fede Álvarez changed the part to the same model as Ash, and Ridley Scott agreed that face had not come back in a later film. Ian Holm had died in 2020. The estate gave permission to use the likeness. Legacy Effects, supervised by Shane Mahan, built a bisected animatronic.
No mold of Holm from Alien survived, so the shop used a head cast from The Hobbit, when he was much older, for the spacing of the features. Sculptors Andy Bergholtz and Jason Matthews made clay portraits, and Scott Patton rebuilt the head digitally from a scan of those portraits. The body was a life cast of Legacy artist Lindsay MacGowan, resculpted with the damage. One arm was a puppet a performer could wear, and the other was a mechanical arm.
Daniel Betts performed the dialogue, and Legacy played that recording into the animatronic on set. A program called Speecher shifted Betts's voice toward Holm's Ash lines from the 1979 film. Metaphysic then added eye and mouth movement with a machine-learning pass. Álvarez described the theatrical version as short on time in post, with some shots showing the CG too clearly. For the home release he sent the companies back to finish the face, and that version used more of the puppet.

Conclusion
Rook was the Weyland-Yutani science officer who turned the Nostromo Xenomorph into compound Z-01 on Renaissance Station. Big Chap tore him in half, he sealed the station with the sample aboard, and the rings of LV-410 destroyed Renaissance while he was trying to send that compound to Jackson's Star.
