Sir Peter Weyland founded Weyland Corp and was played by Guy Pearce in Prometheus and in the prologue of Alien: Covenant. Born in Mumbai on 1 October 1990, he built the synthetic David, gave the 2023 TED talk, and hid aboard the USCSS Prometheus. An Engineer killed him on LV-223 at Christmas 2093, when he was 103 years old and had come to ask for more life.
Biography
Early Life
The 2012 Weyland Industries timeline, released with Prometheus, puts his birth in Mumbai on 1 October 1990. It names his parents only by their work: an Oxford-educated Professor of Comparative Mythology and a self-taught engineer. On 1 October 2004 he turned fourteen, and days later he patented a synthetic trachea, his twelfth patent. Weyland Corp was incorporated on 11 October 2012.
On 27 March 2015 an orbital array of solar panels, tilted to hold a permanent summer angle, made him his first billion. On 2 February 2016 a localized synthetic atmosphere over the polar ice was presented as the end of global warming. He was knighted on 17 July 2016, at 26. Alan Dean Foster's Alien: Covenant novelization records the title. On 10 December 2017 he received the Nobel Peace Prize for that polar work. Nine days later the company revived NASA's Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter with technology from NASA's cancelled Project Prometheus, a nuclear-electric rocket program, and the probe found simple life in the ocean of Europa.
TED Talk
In 2022 the health division identified a genetic sequence covering 98 percent of cancers and fielded a cure. On 4 February 2023 he received a Nobel in medicine for that work. On 28 February he ended three years out of public view and spoke at TED. The talk used the myth of Prometheus, the titan punished for stealing fire, and the claim that people had taken that place. He left the audience with "We are the gods now." The piece went out as a short film ahead of Prometheus. The company note issued with the talk called him the maker of the first convincing humanoid robotic system, and it placed his nanotechnology past the limits doctors would accept and his gene therapy past the Vatican.
Creating David
The 2012 Weyland Industries timeline dates the android to the years after the TED talk. On 5 August 2023 the company patented a method and apparatus for cybernetic individuals, for use in laboratories and industry. On 7 January 2025 Weyland manufactured the first advanced prototype and called him David, a name the timeline says he had reserved for a human son. On 22 March 2026 the firm patented a compound meant to copy the look and texture of human skin. On 1 January 2028 he adjusted that prototype so David could meet people, and the timeline records that first meeting as a success.
On 12 December 2029 he won a long patent case against the Japanese firm Yutani Corporation and kept the David patents. The National Science Foundation lifted restrictions on selling the androids on 11 May 2035, and that June the third generation was used inside the company to test whether people would accept them. David 4, on 1 April 2042, was the first model offered for sale. On 26 February 2062 only 7 percent of humans could recognize a sixth-generation David as a machine, and on 6 July 2068 Weyland deployed thousands of seventh-generation units with an emotional encoding that copied most human feelings while they carried out their work. The synthetic who stayed awake on Prometheus was the eighth of that line.
The prologue of Alien: Covenant, and Foster's novelization, shows David waking in a white room with Weyland. David named a Steinway and a marble copy of Michelangelo's David, finished in the summer of 1504, and took that name. Weyland called himself David's father, and when David would not accept that, Weyland called him a creation. David played the entry of the gods into Valhalla from Wagner's Das Rheingold, then asked who had made Weyland. Weyland answered that the two of them would find their creators.
Developing New Technologies
The same timeline dates the machines behind the long crossings to the years after David. On 20 May 2028 the San Francisco labs found that a body's life processes could be stopped and started again, and on 27 July 2030 Weyland patented a chamber to do it, the hypersleep unit used on the long crossings. On 20 May 2032 company scientists described an inverse relationship between speed and the flow of time, which made faster-than-light travel possible. On 17 January 2034 the firm introduced the Heliades, the first exploration ship built to use that drive.
The atmospheric processor, patented on 9 August 2029, was the machine behind his line that if a world had no air, the company would make it. Terraforming began on Luna on 10 August 2031. On 14 May 2039 company astronomers logged a ringed planet and several moons just outside Zeta 2 Reticuli, including LV-426, and expected a voyage there within the century. On 28 May 2039 the processor put a breathable atmosphere on GJ 667Cc. A powered cargo exoskeleton, patented in 2056, became the P-5000 power loader, and the MedPod, an automated surgical station, was patented on 2 September 2061. The company unveiled the USCSS Prometheus on 9 July 2072 as a larger Heliades-class ship, with a first flight in the summer of 2073. On 1 January 2073 classified findings fixed the coordinates for a deep-space voyage that again used the name Project Prometheus. The public timeline did not name that destination.
The Star Map
In 2089, archaeologists Elizabeth Shaw and Charlie Holloway opened a cave on the Isle of Skye and found a painted star pattern that matched marks left by several early human cultures. They took the pattern as an invitation from the beings who had made mankind, not as a warning. Weyland paid for a ship to follow it. The USCSS Prometheus left Earth with scientists, a security team, corporate officers, and David, who stayed awake for the two-year crossing and studied the languages he would need on the moon. Weyland went into hypersleep in secret. The crew did not know he was aboard.
Prometheus Mission Briefing
Prometheus reached LV-223 at Christmas 2093. Meredith Vickers presented herself as the company officer in charge. A hologram of Weyland then played for the waking scientists. He stood with a cane in a pale suit, and the glass behind him showed a terraformed landscape of domes and towers. The recording presented him as dead, and it gave the voyage as a search for the beings who made mankind. Shaw and Holloway laid out the maps from the Isle of Skye that had brought the ship there.
Waking From Hypersleep
He had stayed in hypersleep through the first descent to LV-223. The crew learned he was aboard only after a mutated Fifield reached the hangar and was killed with fire and gunfire. Before that fight, David had put a drop of the black fluid from the urns into Holloway's drink, Vickers had burned Holloway at the airlock, and Shaw had cut a Trilobite out of herself in the surgical booth of Vickers's module.
He was 103 years old when he woke, and he met them from a wheelchair, in a white gown, in the medical bay. Vickers was his daughter. Shaw told him Holloway was dead, that the Engineers were not what the cave maps had promised, and that the ship should leave. Weyland would not go. He asked what Holloway would do this close to an answer, and whether Shaw had lost her faith. He told her she had convinced him that if these beings had made humanity, they could save him from death. David had found a last living Engineer in a buried ship under the mound, and a navigation display on that ship that marked Earth.
Meeting The Engineer
David led Weyland, Shaw, the medical officer Ford, and the mercenary Jackson onto that buried Engineer ship and woke the last Engineer. David opened the contact. A deleted scene keeps the talk going. At Weyland's request, David told the Engineer they had come because the Engineers had asked, and the Engineer asked why they had come. Shaw broke in, as she does in the released film. Weyland then had David say that he wanted to live forever, and Weyland himself said that his company had made David from nothing and that he and the Engineer were gods who do not die. The Engineer attacked after that.
Death
The Engineer killed him on that deck, and the blow tore the scalp open across the white hair. Ford and the mercenary Jackson died in the same attack, and the Engineer tore David's head from his body before Shaw got off the deck. He was 103 years old, and more life was what he had asked for in that room. With Weyland dead, the Engineer set the Juggernaut on course for Earth with a hold of the black fluid.
Captain Janek stayed on the bridge with Chance and Ravel and rammed Prometheus into the Juggernaut as it lifted for Earth. Weyland's body stayed on that Engineer ship. Vickers ejected in the lifeboat module and was crushed when the wrecked Juggernaut rolled across the ground. She had not been in the room where her father died. Shaw recovered David's severed head after that crash and left LV-223 on another Engineer ship. With Prometheus lost, other firms could bid for the company he had founded.
Personality
Weyland spoke as if the next step in human history were his to take. At the TED talk in 2023 he told the room, "We are the gods now," after a public life that had included Weyland Corp, a knighthood, and a Nobel Peace Prize. He then spent company money on the machines that made a crossing like Prometheus possible, paid for the ship, and followed a cave painting from the Isle of Skye. The voyage was his way of asking where humanity came from, and he meant to ask the makers in person.
He called himself David's father and did not treat him as an equal. In the prologue of Alien: Covenant, when David refused that, Weyland called him a creation and had him choose his own name. The hologram aboard Prometheus called David the closest thing to a son Weyland would ever have. David was also the synthetic left awake for the two-year crossing, to study languages and to be there when Weyland woke.
He would not treat his own death as the end of the question. The hologram recorded on 22 June 2091 presented him as long dead, and the crew did not learn he was in hypersleep aboard Prometheus until he woke, at 103 years old. On the deck of the buried ship he asked the Engineer for more life. Decades earlier he had told a TED audience that people had taken the place of the gods.
Later Mentions
Years after LV-223, in Foster's novelization, David judged that Weyland had been a great man who wanted obedience and more life, and that he had received neither. He treated the Engineers as the same kind of maker, wanting compliance from what they made, not an equal, and he gave both judgments to the Covenant synthetic Walter. Walter held that he and David had been made to serve. The prologue is the only scene in that novel in which Weyland himself appears.
In Alien: Covenant Origins, Walter's arrival on the Covenant was delayed because Peter Weyland was gone and Yutani had never built synthetics. Representative Mithun gave that reason to Katherine Daniels while the crew waited for the synthetic. Kajsa, the other representative, treated the merged name as a tribute to a man known across the planet. Hideo Yutani preferred to stay quiet, and he did not treat a family name as a form of honor.
After Prometheus was lost, other firms bid for Weyland Corp. The Chinese firm Jutou Combine pushed hardest, and it did not stop after the sale. Hideo Yutani won. What changed hands was Peter's scientific work, his property, the factories, the people, control of human colonization, and the David patents. The Yutani tower in Greater Tokyo was built one floor and seven meters taller than Weyland Tower at the Docks in London.
Relation To Charles Bishop Weyland
Prometheus names Peter Weyland, played by Guy Pearce, as the man who founded Weyland Corp. Alien vs. Predator names a different founder, Charles Bishop Weyland, who died on the Bouvetoya stairs in October 2004 when Scar killed him. Peter turned fourteen that same month, and he lived until an Engineer killed him on LV-223 at Christmas 2093. A May 2012 Empire interview recorded that Ridley Scott had not seen either AvP film, because he could not take that step. A May 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter recorded that he thought Alien vs. Predator a daft idea and that it had brought the creature down, so Prometheus started again as a prequel.
The 2012 timeline names Peter's parents only as an Oxford-educated professor of comparative mythology and a self-taught engineer, and it names neither of them. Fans call Charles that engineer, and Peter's father, so both founders can share one Weyland family line. They are matching the timeline's October 2004 patent to Charles's death that same month. No film, novel, or game states the relationship. Ian Whyte played both Scar and the Engineer, so the same performer killed both founders on screen.
Behind The Scenes
Concept art for the crossing showed him asleep in a medical cradle, strapped in, with lines running to the monitors. A cryosleep dream was written and then cut. In that dream David, in a jumpsuit and sunglasses, found a younger Weyland on a yacht and was ordered not to wake him until the thing he came for had been found. Guy Pearce described the cut scene in interviews around the release. The finished film leaves him in hypersleep until the crew has a living Engineer to take him to.
Pearce played both ages. Ridley Scott wanted a younger actor under the old-age makeup so the hunger would show through, and Pearce spent about five hours in the chair. The production put the age near a hundred. A sketch for the part was labeled "Rutger or Max," for Rutger Hauer and Max von Sydow. Scott described the role as a mix of Thomas Edison, Bill Gates, and Steve Jobs, and he pointed Pearce at Rupert Murdoch and Richard Branson as men who had built large companies. Pearce described a man with the money to act on ideas other people only discussed, who would not stop until he could ask the makers for more life.
Jon Spaihts's drafts left Weyland off the ship. Shaw and Holloway visited him on an orbital colony and then at offices on a terraformed Mars, and the vessel in those drafts was the Magellan. A hidden squad of company soldiers went aboard in his place. Damon Lindelof moved him onto the ship and made the voyage a search for more life. A working forename, Arthur, was dropped. The terraformed landscape from the Mars visit stayed in the film only as the view through the glass behind the hologram. Luke Scott directed the TED short that Ridley Scott and Lindelof staged for the campaign.
