When the expedition reached the site, they discovered that a tunnel had already been opened beneath the ice, leading them into a vast buried pyramid with architecture linked to several ancient civilizations. Inside, the team unknowingly triggered mechanisms that awakened dormant systems and prepared the structure for a Predator hunt.
Three Young Blood Predators, Scar, Celtic, and Chopper, arrived at the pyramid to complete a ritual that required them to battle Xenomorphs. Before descending, they had surveyed the interior on the Antarctica temple holographic maps projected from their gauntlets. A captive Alien Queen was used to produce eggs, and several members of the human expedition became hosts after facehuggers were released into the chamber. When chestbursters emerged, the Xenomorphs quickly matured and spread through the pyramid, killing humans and clashing with the Predators. The hunting ritual soon collapsed into chaos as the Xenomorphs began to overwhelm both species and escape containment.
Lex eventually formed an uneasy alliance with Scar after realizing that the humans were not the primary targets of the hunt. Together they fought their way through the pyramid and attempted to stop the Xenomorph outbreak before it could reach the surface. Although Scar succeeded in killing several Xenomorphs, including the formidable Grid, he was mortally wounded in the process. Lex and Scar managed to chain the Alien Queen and drag her into the water at the surface, sending her into the depths beneath the ice. After the battle ended, the Elder Predator honored Lex for fighting beside Scar, but the final scene revealed that a chestburster had emerged from Scar's body, foreshadowing the birth of the Predalien.

A prologue scene only included in the Unrated Edition of the movie includes a scene on Bouvetoya in the year 1904.

Alien vs. Predator was directed by Paul W. S. Anderson and shot primarily at Barrandov Studios in Prague, where the pyramid interiors were built as large physical sets. Amalgamated Dynamics supplied the creature suits. Ian Whyte played Scar, Celtic, and Chopper. Tom Woodruff Jr. performed inside Alien suits, including Grid.
Lance Henriksen was cast as Charles Bishop Weyland as a deliberate echo of Bishop from Aliens and Alien 3. Computer-generated imagery filled in leaps, falls, and creature movement the foam-latex suits could not hold. The film was the first theatrical live-action crossover between the two series.
Novelization
HarperEntertainment published Marc Cerasini's Alien vs. Predator novelization on 29 June 2004, weeks before the film opened. Cerasini worked from earlier drafts, so the book opens in northern Cambodia in 2000 BC with a hunter named Funan watching a Predator fight Aliens at a forbidden pyramid, then expands the 1904 Bouvetoya whaling camp so Karl Johanssen finds an Alien in the mess before a Predator hits it. Five hunters wake from fluid tanks on the mothership, kneel before a warrior-god effigy, and leave their plasmacasters aboard. The film cut that count to three Young Bloods. Charles Bishop Weyland is in his forties in the book, not Lance Henriksen's age, and carries a golf club that doubles as a cane when his health fails.
Scar bloods himself with a dead Warrior's finger instead of a Facehugger, then kills a Predalien chestburster the moment it bursts from another hunter during the escape. Grid rides the Queen up the ice tunnel and reaches the surface before the self-destruct blast tears him apart. Lex wears a fuller mesoskeleton suit with a helmet, and Scar burns a thunderbolt into her forehead, the same mark given to Machiko Noguchi in the comics, rather than the Xenomorph brand on her cheek. When the Queen is chained to the iron separator, the ice does not break at once. She recovers and almost kills Lex before the vat finally goes through.
Legacy
Alien vs. Predator was the first theatrical live-action crossover between the two series, after years of Dark Horse comics. Lex walked out of the Bouvetoya pyramid with Scar's mark. A Predalien chestburster then burst from Scar and set up Requiem.
