Machiko Noguchi: The Woman Who Became A Yautja

Machiko Noguchi was a Japanese human from the Aliens vs. Predator expanded universe. She was the administrator of the Prosperity Wells colony on Ryushi before the settlement was destroyed during a violent clash between Yautja, humans, and Xenomorphs. After fighting beside the Predator known as Broken Tusk, Machiko was marked as Blooded and later joined a Yautja clan led by Top-Knot. Her story made her one of the most important human characters in Aliens vs. Predator lore and one of the clearest examples of a human and Yautja team-up.

Who Was Machiko Noguchi?

Machiko Noguchi from Aliens vs. Predator

Machiko Noguchi was an employee of the Chigusa Corporation and the colony administrator of Prosperity Wells. She was sent to Ryushi as a replacement for Hiroki Shimura and initially struggled to connect with the ranchers under her authority. Her corporate background, reserved personality, and strict attitude made her unpopular among many of the colonists. However, the Ryushi disaster forced Machiko to become much more than a manager. She survived a Xenomorph outbreak, fought rogue young Predators, and eventually earned the respect of the veteran Yautja warrior Dachande, better known as Broken Tusk. Although she was actually human, she is one of the first instances of a Female Yautja hunter from the lore.

Early Life and Family

Machiko Noguchi before joining Predator culture

Machiko was born in Japan to Akira Noguchi and Keiko Noguchi. Her early life was shaped by tragedy after her father was disgraced and fired for embezzlement. Akira later committed suicide, and Machiko discovered his body. This event helped explain her cold and guarded personality as an adult. Her mother later remarried and distanced herself from the Noguchi name, leaving Machiko even more isolated. By the time she arrived on Ryushi, Machiko had built her identity around work, discipline, and corporate achievement. She was intelligent, capable, and ambitious, but she lacked close personal ties.

Administrator Of Prosperity Wells

Machiko Noguchi during the Ryushi incident

On Ryushi, Machiko oversaw Prosperity Wells, a ranching colony tied to the Chigusa Corporation, one of the mega-corporations rivaling Weyland-Yutani. The colony raised rhynths, large herd animals whose export was important to the company. Although Machiko held official authority, many workers still trusted Hiroki Shimura more than her. Hiroki helped her understand the colony and encouraged her to soften her corporate attitude. Machiko slowly began earning the colonists' trust before the entire settlement was thrown into chaos. The disaster began when Yautja arrived on Ryushi for a hunt involving Xenomorphs. The young hunters lost control of the situation, and the Xenomorph infestation spread into the colony. Machiko soon discovered that the situation was not a normal workplace emergency, but a three-sided battle between colonists, Aliens, and Predators.

The Ryushi Incident

During the Ryushi incident, Machiko proved that she was more than a corporate administrator. She armed herself, protected survivors, and took direct action against both the Xenomorphs and the hostile young Predators. The crisis destroyed Prosperity Wells and killed many of the colonists, including people Machiko had only recently started to understand. One of the central figures in the incident was Dachande, the veteran Yautja leader also called Broken Tusk. He had been injured and captured by the humans, but he was not the reckless killer Machiko first assumed him to be. Unlike the young Predators under his command, Dachande followed the Yautja honor code. Machiko eventually recognized that he was disciplined, experienced, and willing to fight the Xenomorph threat directly.

Alliance With Broken Tusk

Dachande with Machiko Noguchi

Machiko and Broken Tusk became unlikely allies as the Ryushi situation collapsed. Machiko helped Dachande fight Xenomorphs despite the danger, while Dachande came to respect her courage and skill. He named her Da'dtou-di, meaning "small knife", a Yautja name that reflected both her size and her deadly potential. Their alliance reached its most important moment during the final escape from the Xenomorph hive. Machiko and Dachande faced a Xenomorph Queen, escaped in a pod, and survived the destruction of the colony. Dachande was mortally wounded, but before dying, he marked Machiko's forehead with his clan symbol. This act made her Blooded in Yautja terms and marked her as a worthy hunter.

Becoming Blooded

Machiko's Blooded mark was one of the most important moments in Aliens vs. Predator lore. The Blooded status usually belonged to Blooded Yautja who had survived a worthy hunt, especially against dangerous prey such as Xenomorphs. For a human to receive that mark from a respected Predator was extremely unusual. It meant that Broken Tusk judged Machiko by her actions rather than by her species. After the incident, the colony was gone, Chigusa treated the disaster as a loss, and Machiko stayed behind on Ryushi. She lived alone for a time, accompanied by a dog named Creep and a rhynth named Milo. Rather than fully returning to corporate life, she waited for the Yautja to return.

Joining Top-Knot's Clan

Two years after the Ryushi incident, Machiko encountered another Yautja hunting party in Aliens vs. Predator: War. She saved one of the Un-Blooded hunters and presented herself to the clan leader Top-Knot. Top-Knot recognized the mark given to her by Broken Tusk and accepted her into his clan. Machiko then entered the Yautja ranks and became one of the rare humans to live and hunt among Predators. Life among the Yautja was harsh. Machiko received her own armor, living space, and weapons, but many clan members still treated her as an outsider. She was physically smaller than the Predators, unfamiliar with many of their customs, and constantly judged by her most recent performance. Even after proving herself against Xenomorphs, she struggled to gain lasting respect from the clan.

Life Among The Predators

Machiko's time with Top-Knot's clan showed the brutal side of Yautja culture. The hunters valued strength, discipline, trophies, and reputation. A single mistake could erase previous victories, and status had to be defended again and again. Machiko learned that being marked by Broken Tusk did not make her fully accepted. She remained useful and respected in limited ways, such as helping to prepare food. Her most personal rival in the clan was Shorty, a Predator who repeatedly mocked and challenged her. Shorty treated Machiko as an inferior outsider and tried to use her status to reinforce his own.

Betrayal Of The Clan

Machiko's loyalty to the clan broke when she learned that Top-Knot's hunters had begun killing humans on the planet Bunda. Although she had tried to live by Yautja laws, the hunt against humans forced her to confront her true identity. She realized that she still belonged with humanity, not with a clan that would treat innocent people as prey. Machiko betrayed the Predators, freed a captured Xenomorph Queen, and helped human survivors (remnants of a Colonial Marine team from Aliens: Berserker) escape. During this conflict, Machiko finally faced Shorty in a lethal fight. Machiko used her training, intelligence, and wristblades to kill him.

Return To Human Life

After leaving Top-Knot's clan, Machiko eventually settled on Bellatrix 2. She tried to return to a quieter existence and worked as a safari guide. However, normal life no longer fit her easily. She had survived Xenomorphs, fought beside Predators, joined a Yautja clan, and lived by a code that few humans could understand. Like many warriors in the Alien and Predator universe, she found peace difficult after the hunt.

A Detour To The Hunter's Planet

Aliens vs. Predator: Hunter's Planet was a non-canon 1994 novel that continued Machiko Noguchi's story after the events on Ryushi. Bored and isolated after leaving the Yautja, Machiko accepted a job from billionaire Livermore Evanston to deal with Xenomorph outbreaks on his private hunting world, a planet filled with genetically engineered creatures for wealthy clients to hunt. After arriving, Machiko discovered that Evanston was secretly creating cybernetic Xenomorphs through illegal experiments. The situation spiraled into chaos when the synthetic Aliens broke free and began slaughtering humans and Predators alike. During the conflict, Machiko reunited with several Yautja hunters, including her old rival Shorty (who was now alive, because War did not happen), and once again became involved in a brutal battle between humans, Predators, and Xenomorphs.

Three World War

Machiko returned in Aliens vs. Predator: Three World War, where the Colonial Marines sought her help against a rogue group of Predators known as Killers. These Predators did not follow the normal hunting code and used Xenomorphs as hunting dogs, making them similar to Bad Blood Predators. Machiko understood the danger because Yautja stories had described such clans as dishonorable killers who hunted for slaughter rather than worthy challenge. Machiko helped the Marines contact a traditional Yautja clan and served as a bridge between humans and Predators. She translated, advised the Marines, and warned them not to provoke the hunters unnecessarily. Her experience made her valuable because she understood both human military thinking and Yautja honor culture. However, the war also forced her to choose between the two worlds once again.

Losing The Blooded Mark

Unblooding ritual of Machiko Noguchi

Near the end of Three World War, Machiko chose survival and human loyalty over a final glorious death beside the Predators. A Yautja Hunting Captain removed the Blooded mark from her forehead through a reversal of the Predator blooding ritual. This moment symbolically ended her place among the hunters. Machiko accepted the loss because she had already realized that she could not fully become Yautja. The removal of the mark did not erase what Machiko had done, and she was left alive by the Predators.

Weapons and Equipment

Before joining the Yautja, Machiko used human weapons, including a powerful revolver and firearms taken during the Ryushi crisis. After becoming part of Top-Knot's clan, she received customized Predator armor and a bio-mask made for her human body. She also used classic Predator technology, including wristblades and a plasma caster. Machiko's equipment reflected her hybrid status. She was not a Predator by species, but she could use Yautja tools effectively. Her smaller size meant she could not rely on brute force the same way many Predators did. Instead, she survived through training, timing, firearms experience, and the ability to read both human and Yautja behavior.

Notable Victims

Machiko killed several important enemies across her appearances. Her most notable victims included the Un-Blooded Predator Oc'djy, the Xenomorph Queen on Ryushi, the Predator Freckles, and her longtime rival Shorty. She was also involved in conflicts against the Killer Predators and their controlled Xenomorphs. These victories made her one of the deadliest humans in the Aliens vs. Predator timeline.

Personality and Traits

Machiko was disciplined, guarded, and often emotionally distant. At first, those traits made her seem like a cold corporate official. Over time, they helped her survive situations that would have killed most humans. She was physically fit, trained in combat, and able to make hard decisions under pressure. Her greatest conflict was identity. Among humans, she often felt isolated and misunderstood. Among Predators, she was respected by some but never fully accepted.

Conclusion

Machiko Noguchi was one of the most memorable human Predator characters in Aliens vs. Predator lore. She began as a corporate administrator on Ryushi, survived the destruction of Prosperity Wells, and earned the respect of Broken Tusk. Her time among Top-Knot's clan turned her into a trained Predator hunter, but it also showed that she could never fully belong among the Yautja. By choosing humanity after living among the hunters, Machiko became a unique bridge between two warrior cultures and one of the franchise's most compelling survivors.
