Thia: Profile Of The Cut-In-Half Weyland-Yutani Android

By | Published November 02, 2025

Thia is a female research synthetic created and employed by Weyland-Yutani and featured in Predator: Badlands. The film introduces Thia as a damaged yet determined survivor who forms an unlikely alliance with a Yautja warrior named Dek. Thia was cut in half by a creature called the Kalisk after a failed corporate expedition on Genna, the "Death Planet". Played by Elle Fanning, Thia continues the synthetic archetype that has been part of every Alien movie (except the AvP movies).

A Weyland-Yutani Research Android

Thia the Weyland-Yutani android

Thia was created as part of Weyland-Yutani’s next generation of research synthetics. Designed to resemble a young human woman, she was developed for scientific and exploratory missions on remote worlds. However, she was not the only instance of this particular model, as at least 1 other (Tessa) was created. Her personality was programmed with curiosity, confidence, and a degree of independence unusual for a corporate synthetic. For most of her existence, Thia operated within controlled laboratory environments, serving as both researcher and experimental subject.

Damaged By Kalisk

Thia cut in half and raised by Dek

During a Weyland-Yutani expedition to the planet Genna, Thia’s team encountered a predatory alien creature known as the Kalisk (designated as XX0522). The attack destroyed the crew and left Thia gravely damaged, her body torn in half, and only her upper section remaining functional. Severely compromised but still conscious, Thia became the sole survivor of the incident. Thia could still move around (although slowly) with her two arms, and could potentially be repaired later.

Join Up With Dek

Dek has strapped Thia to his back

Following the destruction of her team, Thia encountered a Yautja warrior named Dek, who was also hunting the Kalisk. Dek was banished from Yautja Prime due to his small size and other weaknesses, and with the help of his brother Kwei, ended up on Genna. Despite the natural hostility between humans and Predators, the two formed an uneasy alliance based on mutual survival. Dek provided the physical strength and combat skill that Thia lacked, while Thia offered strategic insight and knowledge of the creature’s biology. Dek was visually impaired (possibly blind in one eye), and Thia's awareness and special vision helped him fight the creatures on Genna.

Thia's Sister Tessa

Tessa, Thia's android sister

Thia was not the only synthetic of her kind. Her twin sister, Tessa, was developed in the same program and shared similar physical and psychological templates. Unlike Thia, Tessa remained under the direct control of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, continuing to serve its research and retrieval missions. Tessa was also gravely injured in an attack (possibly also from the Kalisk), but was fully repaired in a Weyland-Yutani facility. She then leads a team of combat androids against Dek and Thia, becoming another antagonist.

Behind The Scenes

Thea is played by Elle Fanning

The role of Thia is portrayed by actress Elle Fanning, who also plays her twin sister Tessa in the film. The creative team conceived Thia as a next-generation synthetic developed by Weyland‑Yutani Corporation, linking the story to the earlier android characters of the franchise. In early concept work, Thia was envisioned as fully intact, but the decision was made to present her physically damaged, relying on her ally Dek. Fanning has spoken about being attracted to the character because of its difference from her previous work and the opportunity to inhabit both sisters with their contrasting paths. The production intentionally used visual cues, such as corporate logos and synthetic design, to tie this story into the wider mythos of both the Alien and Predator universes.

Similar Androids

Bishop cut in half in Aliens

Thia’s design and behavior draw comparisons to earlier Weyland-Yutani synthetics such as Bishop from Aliens. Bishop was also not a combat android, but focused on supporting humans in research and medical issues. In the same way, Bishop was cut in half by an Alien creature, although his injuries were more severe. The act of carrying a piece of an android (usually a head) is common in Alien lore. This happened with David in Prometheus, Davis from Alien: Rogue Incursion, and with Viola from the Alien: Echo novel. Like in Badlands, the damaged android was able to provide support for the non-synthetic protagonist, giving advice and hacking computer systems.

Conclusion

Thia is a Weyland-Yutani research synthetic who becomes stranded on the planet Genna after a failed corporate mission. Severely damaged by the creature Kalisk, she survives with only her upper body intact. During her struggle to stay functional, she encounters Dek, a banished Yautja warrior, and the two form an uneasy alliance to hunt the creature that destroyed her team. Thia’s twin sister Tessa remains loyal to Weyland-Yutani and later leads a group of androids against them. Played by Elle Fanning, Thia’s story connects to the long line of Weyland-Yutani synthetics seen throughout the Alien and Predator universe.
