Rain Carradine was a colonist from Jackson's Star, played by Cailee Spaeny in Alien: Romulus. She lived under Weyland-Yutani on LV-410 with her adoptive synthetic brother Andy. After the company doubled her labor hours in 2142, she joined Tyler Harrison's crew aboard the Corbelan IV to steal cryopods from Renaissance Station. Xenomorphs overran the station before they could leave. She survived with Andy, dumped the Offspring with the cargo hold, and set course for Yvaga III.
Biography
Earlier Life
Marie Raines Carradine was born on 18 February 2121 at Jackson's Star, a Weyland-Yutani mining colony on the ringed world LV-410 in the Alpheios System. Colony papers listed her serial number as FWC25583. Her parents, E Carradine and S Carradine, died of lung disease from the local air. Before he died, her father pulled a damaged synthetic off the scrap heap, named him Andy, and left the unit to look after her.
Andy was an older model with faults, so he settled into the role of a younger brother rather than a replacement father. Rain farmed under her first labor contract and kept taped photographs of friends on the apartment wall. Andy told pun-based jokes, and she put up with them even when other colonists treated him as company property.
The Company Contract
In 2142, Rain finished the 12,000 hours on her contract and took Andy to the company office to ask for a transfer to Yvaga III. Yvaga sat outside company control, and she had counted on cryosleep for the nine-year crossing. A clerk refused the request, citing a worker shortage, and doubled the obligation to 24,000 hours. The new assignment sent her into the mines, the same work that had wrecked her parents' lungs.
Outside the office, a group of kids knocked Andy down and left him on the ground. Rain pulled them off, used the reset pendant on her necklace to bring him back online, and checked his head before she got him on his feet. She walked him home through the colony streets. The doubled contract left her in the mines with no legal path off Jackson's Star.
Tyler And The Corbelan
Tyler Harrison, her former partner, called her after the office visit and asked her to bring Andy to a meeting. His sister Kay Harrison, his cousin Bjorn, and Bjorn's adoptive sister Navarro were in on the plan. A derelict station had drifted into orbit above the colony, and they meant to steal working hypersleep chambers for the nine-year trip to Yvaga. Rain did not want to break into company property or put Andy at risk. She went anyway, because Andy was the only one who could talk to the station computers.
Bjorn treated Andy as a threat from the start. A company android had killed his mother and two other workers while trying to save more than a dozen miners, and he expected Andy to fail the same way once they were on company property. Rain knew Yvaga would not take a synthetic, and she had not told Andy.
First Time Off-World
Navarro flew the mining hauler Corbelan IV off Jackson's Star with Rain and Andy in the cockpit. Neither of them had left the planet's atmosphere before. The hauler climbed through the cloud deck and then the ice rings of LV-410. Jackson's Star dropped out of sight under the smog, and Rain saw stars and open space in place of the brown colony sky.
The derelict was Renaissance, a research outpost split into the linked Romulus and Remus modules. They needed working hypersleep chambers and the fuel to run them for nine years. The hangar was dark and empty when they docked, and nobody met them.
Renaissance Station
Tyler, Bjorn, and Andy went after the pods while Rain, Navarro, and Kay waited on the Corbelan IV. While they waited, Kay was pregnant and wanted Tyler left out of it. On the station, Bjorn told Andy that Yvaga would not grant a synthetic residency, and Andy accepted staying on Jackson's Star if Rain made the crossing. The men found the chambers, then pulled fuel from a working cryonic room. Frozen Facehuggers thawed in that room and a lockdown sealed the door without the clearance to open it. Rain and Navarro crossed into the station. Rain found a wrecked science officer later identified as Rook, pulled a module from its head, and passed the chip through the door so Tyler could seat it in Andy. The upgrade gave Andy full access to Renaissance and repaired his faults, and it reset his orders to serve Weyland-Yutani.
The station had recovered the Big Chap Xenomorph from the wreck of the USCSS Nostromo after Alien (1979), then used that specimen for further work in the Romulus lab. By the time Rain's crew arrived, that Renaissance research had emptied both modules. The station crew was gone, and the lab systems kept running the company's experiments.
Facehuggers And Navarro
Active systems released a mass of Facehuggers, and one locked onto Navarro. Rain woke the damaged Rook for a way to get it off. Rook treated Navarro as lost, because he counted implantation as finished once a Facehugger locked on. Rain had Tyler freeze the tail with cryo fuel so the others could unwind it from Navarro's neck and pull the creature from her face. Navarro came around, but an embryo could already be inside her.
Andy, under the new chip, tried to stop Navarro from returning to the Corbelan IV. Bjorn forced her onto the hauler with Kay and left Rain, Andy, and Tyler on the station. A Chestburster killed Navarro at the controls, and the uncontrolled ship slammed into the Romulus hangar. The impact knocked Renaissance off its path and left the station less than an hour from the ice rings of LV-410. On the wrecked hauler, Bjorn found the newborn in a cocoon and hit it with a shock baton. Acid from the wound killed him, and Kay fled back toward the station alone.
Rook's Chip
Rain, Andy, and Tyler dropped the temperature in a Facehugger room and tried to cross to the hangar. Kay reached a door and wanted in. Andy refused, because the Scorched Xenomorph was stalking her on the other side, and opening the lock would have let it in with them. It dragged Kay out of sight. In the argument Rain let slip that Kay was pregnant. She struck Andy after he left Kay outside, then went with him and Tyler into the lab after the samples Rook wanted saved.
Those vials held Z-01, a compound Rook called Prometheus Fire, drawn from Xenomorph tissue and tied to the black goo pathogen. Rook treated the fluid as a way to let humans survive in conditions that would kill them, and he wanted the samples back at Jackson's Star. He locked the station computers and would not open the hangar or release the Corbelan IV until the compound was aboard.
The Hive
Andy armed Rain and Tyler with F44AA Pulse Rifles from station stores. They entered a corridor that the hive had coated in resin, and Tyler followed Kay's voice to a cocoon where she was badly hurt but alive. Andy offered Z-01 as a way to close the wounds. Rain stopped Tyler from injecting her. She wanted Kay in cryosleep and treated on Jackson's Star.
Andy stopped them from firing a kill shot, because acid blood in that corridor would have killed them as well. Rain fired warning shots, and they tried to back out, but the Romulus Xenomorphs hit them before they got clear. One wrecked Andy and left him on the floor. Tyler stayed in the corridor with his pulse rifle and held the adult Xenomorphs off so Rain could drag Kay to an elevator. Rain got Kay into the shaft before Tyler was killed covering that retreat.
Kay And The Elevator
Rain left the remaining Z-01 with injured Kay, sent her toward the Corbelan IV, and went back into the hive for Andy. She found him wrecked on the resin floor where the adult Xenomorphs had dropped him. She pulled Rook's chip out of his head and restored the directive her father had written, the one that put her first. Andy came back as the brother she knew, not as a company officer following Rook.
In the elevator, Kay injected Z-01 to close the wounds from the cocoon, the treatment Rain had blocked when Tyler reached for a vial in the hive. The injection stopped the worst of the bleeding before Rain and Andy reached her again, and they started up the shaft toward the hangar with Renaissance less than an hour from the ice rings.
Zero Gravity
Adult Xenomorphs closed on them in the shaft. Rain cut the gravity generators so the creatures drifted, then used the pulse rifle on the ones that came in range. Acid from the kills hung in the air as loose blobs, and she and Andy had to climb around it on the way up. Andy steadied her while she fired, then pulled her clear when a burst of blood drifted toward her suit.
Gravity came back on the climb, and Rain fell. An adult Xenomorph caught her in the shaft, and the elevator dropped past them. Andy came back down, killed it, and got her to the Corbelan IV as the Romulus module hit the rings. Rain let the station computer fly them clear of Renaissance, then cut that link and set the hauler on its own course. Rook tried again to put Andy back on the company objective and keep the Z-01 samples. Rain and Andy sealed the hatch, and Renaissance broke up in the ice field with Rook aboard.
The Offspring
Rain put Kay into a cryopod for the run to Yvaga. A medical alarm followed, and Kay delivered a small egg. Rain tried to get the egg out of the chamber. The Offspring came out of that shell as a grey infant, then grew within minutes into a tall human-Xenomorph-Engineer hybrid. Acid from the discarded egg burned through the deck into the cargo hold. The creature left the hold, killed Kay in the cryo bay, and wrecked Andy when he tried to stop it, while the hauler lost heat through the damaged hull.
Rain put on a pressure suit, tied herself to a cable, and went after the hybrid in the cargo compartment. She kicked its chrysalis so acid opened the hull, then reached the release gear and dumped the cargo hold into the rings. Debris crushed the Offspring and forced it into the ice. The blast threw Rain off the deck, but the tether held, and she pulled herself back to the ship.
Course For Yvaga III
Rain seated the damaged Andy in a cryopod and promised to repair him when they woke. She recorded a cryo log as the last survivor of the Corbelan and set the course for Yvaga III. The hauler had fuel and working chambers for the nine-year crossing. She entered stasis with Andy beside her.
Fede Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues later finished a script for an Alien: Romulus sequel. Álvarez is producing that film with Ridley Scott rather than directing it. They wrote the script so Rain and Andy would not be killed off at the start. Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are expected to return. Reports that Michael Fassbender's android David would appear remain unconfirmed, and the studio has not published a plot or a setting.
Merchandise
Hot Toys released Rain as Movie Masterpiece MMS793, a 1/6 figure about 26 cm tall with a Cailee Spaeny head sculpt and rolling eyeballs. The tailored kit copies her station clothes: a gray-green tee over a white tank, a sleeve on the left arm, a red wristband, a watch, dark gray pants, and white-and-red sneakers. The box also packs an F44AA-style rifle, the necklace with Andy's reset pendant, an opened reset device, a chip, an articulated Facehugger, and a diorama base with Xenomorph remains.
Funko added Pop! Movies #1614 Rain, a vinyl figure about 3.85 inches tall in a pressure suit with a weapon, sold in window-box packaging. NECA did not issue a Rain figure in its 7-inch line. Its Alien: Romulus accessory set instead shipped an F44AA Pulse Rifle with the 04 mark used on Rain's film weapon, plus Facehuggers, a Chestburster, a cryo-frame case, and a fossilized XX121 asteroid.
Trading Cards
Fede Álvarez posted Alien: Romulus trading-card images on his social accounts, starting with Pack #1 on 23 August 2024. The layout copied the 1979 Topps Alien cards: a red border, a yellow title bar, and a numbered circle in the corner. Later packs added Kay, Andy, and story stills from the station and the hauler. Topps and Upper Deck did not put out a shop set for the film, so the cards stayed as posted images rather than boxed packs.
Rain appeared on more than one card, including a portrait, a still with the F44AA Pulse Rifle, and a pressure-suit shot. Card 26, titled Helland in the Cargohold, shows her on a tether in the Corbelan cargo hold during the fight with the Offspring. Licensed Alien cards before that run came from Topps in 1979, Star Pics for Alien 3 in 1992, Inkworks for the late-1990s Alien Legacy and AvP sets, and Upper Deck from 2016 through 2021.
Rain In Games
Dead by Daylight added Rain on 16 August 2024, the same day Alien: Romulus opened, as a Legendary Outfit for Ellen Ripley. The outfit uses Spaeny's likeness, replaces Ripley's look as a whole, and cannot be mixed with other Ripley pieces. Behaviour sold it in the in-game store as part of the Alien: Romulus Collection.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 ships Rain's Jackson's Star Pack as separate DLC. The pack puts her Romulus outfit on a created marine, adds a pulse rifle with a cryo underbarrel that can freeze and shatter targets, and includes Romulus-themed decals. It does not add Rain as a playable character. The Romulus look also runs through the base game, in station environments and in menus and other interface art.
Behind The Scenes
Fede Álvarez directed Alien: Romulus from a screenplay he wrote with Rodo Sayagues. A photograph of Cailee Spaeny sat on their inspiration board during the writing, and she later won the part. Principal photography ran from 9 March 2023 into early July at Origo Studios in Budapest, on the same stages that had held Dune and Blade Runner 2049. Álvarez shot in chronological order so the cast met the practical creatures in story sequence.
Production designer Naaman Marshall built the colony interiors, station corridors, and Corbelan sets as walkable spaces. Costume designer Carlos Rosario dressed Rain in the brown colony jacket, then the gray station kit. Cinematographer Galo Olivares shot the film, and Amalgamated Dynamics supplied the Facehuggers and adult Xenomorphs as puppets and suits rather than as fully digital stand-ins. Wire work and a controlled water tank covered the zero-gravity elevator and cargo-hold beats. Álvarez based the sibling bond between Rain and Andy on Aliens, with Andy in the protective role that Newt and Ripley had shared.
Conclusion
Rain Carradine was the Jackson's Star colonist who got off Renaissance with Andy. She pulled the company chip out of him, dumped the Offspring with the Corbelan cargo hold, and went into hypersleep toward Yvaga III.
