The Bulwark was a Combat Automaton in Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, new for the sequel rather than a return from the first game. Cold Iron Studios listed it as a Heavy Crawler with an Armored Disruptor role and a High threat level. The in-game brief called it a heavily armored ground crawler with hard-to-hit weak points. It was a crab-like machine, not a Xenomorph and not a standing Synth.
Appearance
Four hydraulic legs held a low, wide chassis, each foot a flat circular pad. Two heavy arms rose over the body, and a single red vertical sensor sat in the center where a face would be. Dark metal covered the frame, with yellow markings on the joints. In the yards the machine sat about chest-high to a Colonial Marine and much wider. Cold Iron called that layout a crawler-class chassis, and the plates on the legs worked as a moving shield while it walked in.
Combat Role
The Bulwark lunged to close the gap, then hit with several attacks that could knock a Marine down. Weak points sat deep in the armor, so fire into the plates did little. Marines kept their distance and shut it down with an EMP. It was weak to electrical hits, which made a Hunter with an Arc Bolt a clean answer, and a Marauder heavy gun stopped a lunge faster than rifle fire. A red targeting fan often preceded the lunge, and Cold Iron rated the threat as High because one Marine on the floor broke a held line. That knockdown was the problem, not a pin like the Harbinger or an acid lock like the Warden.
Spider And Huntsman
The Spider was the base crab. It was fast, hunted in groups, and tried to surround a Marine. The eye was the fast kill, and one behind the squad was the danger. The Huntsman was the same chassis made tougher. It preferred walls and ceilings, and it fired riot-control explosives from mid range to flatten a target. Both were weak to electrical hits, same as the Bulwark. The eye was the weak point on the small ones.
Role In The Story
In 2207, Fireteam Chimaera fought Combat Automatons on LV-558, where the crabs guarded Dr. Pearce. Those machines were tracked as their own class, separate from humanoid Synthetics and from Xenomorphs. The Xbox list asked for 1,000 Combat Automaton kills, the same count as Synthetics and pathogen creatures. The first Fireteam Elite had no crawler machines. Its company opposition was standing Security Synths under SN/TH/YA on LV-895. IGN showed the Bulwark in May 2026 as one of nine enemy types, labeled Automaton, Heavy Crawler, Armored Disruptor, High.
Similar Machines
The closest earlier match was the TecSek, a Montcalm-Delacroix combat machine from Aliens vs. Predator: Deadliest of the Species. TecSeks used an Alien body, twin shoulder cannons, and long claws, and they could take Xenomorph acid. The company AI Toy sent them after Caryn Delacroix and Big Mama. The Bulwark was a crab chassis with a sensor slit, not an Alien skull, but both were company machines that did not walk like a person. The first game's Security Synths stayed upright with rifles.
Conclusion
The Bulwark was Fireteam Elite 2's high-threat Combat Automaton: a large crab crawler that lunged, knocked Marines down, and shut down under EMP. Spider and Huntsman shared the smaller chassis. It arrived with the rest of the new roster on August 25, 2026.
