The Exploder is a volatile Runner Xenomorph caste in Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2, new for the sequel rather than a return from the first game. Cold Iron Studios lists it as a Volatile Runner with a Suicide Pressure Unit role, a pustule-covered caste that detonates next to a squad instead of fighting as a frontline Warrior. Threat level is Medium (situational). The blast is the danger, and the same blast can wipe other Xenomorphs if a fireteam times the shot.

Appearance

The Exploder keeps a four-legged Runner silhouette: low to the floor, long segmented tail with a scythe blade, elongated dome tucked under the mass on its back. That back and the shoulders swell into a translucent yellow-green sac, tight and veined, lit from inside. Promotional shots put it in hive resin and in Weyland-Yutani industrial bays, often mid-lunge with the sac bouncing over a darker, near-black hide. Max Pfeifer at Cold Iron noted bodies that look ready to split from the first frame. That mass sits lower than the Warden's wide crest and knuckle stance, and the Exploder closes faster.

Combat Role

Cold Iron framed the job as suicide pressure, not a claw fight that happens to pop. The Exploder detonates when it gets next to Colonial Marines, a larger blast than a Burster's death pop, forcing a dodge, a move, or a retreat from a held choke. A skilled fireteam can turn that into a weapon by triggering the blast inside a pack. Brock Robin at Cold Iron added a fire rule: thermal weapons kill it faster, but a burning Exploder dies with a larger blast and can wipe the fireteam if the timing is wrong. Leave it alive in a hallway and the line has to break before the sac arrives.

Behind The Scenes

IGN showed the Exploder in May 2026 as part of its First coverage, alongside the Siren and the Warden among the Fireteam 2 Xenomorph types. The same reveal named the player unit Fireteam Chimaera and called the Exploder an obvious extension of the Burster. Max Pfeifer listed it as his favorite new Xenomorph for that morph: take the Burster and make it its own caste. Cold Iron also brought back the Drone and the Crusher from the first Fireteam Elite, so the sequel's swarm now has the old ambusher and charger plus this living bomb in the same roster.

Similarities To The Burster

A Burster Xenomorph from Aliens Fireteam Elite with glowing cysts on its head

The Burster in the first Fireteam Elite ran like a Runner, fast and aggressive, usually in groups. It cut with claws, and the cysts on its head burst into an acid cloud when it died. Cold Iron built the Exploder from that caste and pushed the volatile part onto the whole body. The Exploder's skin is darker than the Burster's moss-green hide, closer to black under the yellow-green sac. The burst payload is larger than the Burster's head cysts, so the blast covers more of the room. The Exploder still has the Runner gait, but it detonates when it reaches a squad, not only when it dies, and it hunts as a pressure unit rather than a claw fighter that happens to pop.

Similarities To The Boiler

A Boiler Xenomorph from Aliens Colonial Marines covered in pale glowing pustules

The Boiler in Aliens: Colonial Marines was the earlier suicide Xenomorph: slow, wrapped in pale glowing boils, and it exploded as soon as it reached a human. Boilers also read as blind, a point still unsettled in Xenomorph vision. The Exploder shares the swollen, ready-to-burst look and the close-range detonation. The Exploder is a Runner that closes fast, then the sac does the Boiler's job.

Conclusion

The Exploder is Fireteam Elite 2's volatile Runner: a Burster morphed into its own caste, with a larger burst payload, closer to a Boiler in the blast, faster in the approach, and dangerous to both Marines and the hive if the shot lands late. It joined the rest of the new roster on August 25, 2026.
