Elle was the replicant at the center of the anime series Blade Runner: Black Lotus, voiced by Jessica Henwick in English and Arisa Shida in Japanese. Built by Niander Wallace Jr. and given false memories and a lotus tattoo, she was released as prey in a secret hunt in the Nevada desert. She escaped with no memory, hunted the people who had taken part, and learned in the end that her own maker had planned it. Two Titan comic series followed her out of Los Angeles, first to a desert fracking town and then to the ruins of Las Vegas.
Biography
Elle's story ran across three works. The anime Blade Runner: Black Lotus covered her creation, the Doll Hunt and her campaign against the hunters in Los Angeles in 2032. The Titan comic Leaving L.A. followed her into the desert towns east of the city in the weeks after the series ended. A second comic, Las Vegas, took her to the irradiated ruins of the old casino city, where replicant kings and queens ruled. Her story moved in order through those three works, from the thirteen episodes of the anime to the four issues of each comic.
Made By Wallace Jr.
Elle was a new-model replicant made in secret by Niander Wallace Jr., the son of the head of the Wallace Corporation. The memory maker Dr. M built most of her memories and gave her more happy ones than an average human had, as a cushion against stress. Someone more skilled added scenes afterward, including a vacation at a swimming pool where a hooded man tattooed a black lotus on her back and called it a symbol of purity. That man was Wallace Jr., and the pool memory was the one scene in her mind that showed a real place.
Wallace Jr. had studied the old Tyrell archives for two years, and he designed Elle as a combat model with no serial number in her eye. Her purpose was hidden from her. He meant her to clear a path to control of the company by killing the people around his father, and he built a limit into her that stopped her from harming her own creator. His father, Niander Wallace Sr., meanwhile wanted obedient and disposable workers, and he used the Doll Hunt to test whether new replicants would stay submissive under extreme stress.
The Doll Hunt
The hunt took place in the Nevada desert, and the episode The Doll Hunt later showed it in full. The hunters were Senator Bannister, the journalist Hooper, Police Chief Earl Grant and his wife Josephine, who called their targets dolls. Elle ran beside another replicant named Miu, who gave her a coat in the cold. The two hid among the rocks and then stole a buggy with two other replicants, but the hunters chased it across the sand until it crashed, and most of the others in the group were shot dead around them.
Hooper stayed behind to test how much the replicants could take. He held out his knife and dared Elle to stab him, and she could not do it. He then killed Miu in front of her and kicked Elle while he filmed. Her eyes began to glow, and she took the knife and stabbed him to death. She escaped with his encrypted camera on a transport vehicle, lost her memory of the hunt, and woke in a truck headed for Los Angeles in October 2032, ten years after the Blackout.
Waking In Los Angeles
In the opening episode, City of Angels, Elle arrived in the city with no memory and only the camera. A street gang cornered her in an alley, and she beat several of the men with skills she did not remember learning. The address she had been looking for now held the junk shop of Doc Badger, who saw that she had lost her memory. He told her the device needed a key held by its owner and that his help would cost money she did not have, so she offered to deal with the gang in return.
She went after the Silver Lake gang alone, killed its leader and warned the survivors to leave the shop alone, and Badger gave her an old sword from his stock as payment. During the fight a memory surfaced of killing a man in the desert, and she kept hearing a man's voice asking her not to forget him. Badger then took her to the repairman Joseph, who disliked new gadgets but agreed to recover the camera's data. On his television she saw Senator Bannister meeting Wallace Sr. and recognized him at once.
The Boxing Club
Elle followed Bannister across the city to an unlicensed replicant boxing club, talked her way past the door staff and dealt with his guards. In his private box he asked whether they had met before, and she answered that they might have met in the desert. He realized who she was and told her she was a replicant built only the week before. She refused to believe him and attacked, and while two replicant boxers fought in the ring below, she broke his neck and threw him from the balcony.
The senator's bodyguard reported the killing, and the rookie officer Alani Davis saw a young woman with a lotus tattoo hurrying away from the club. Another officer chased her west on Walnut and lost her. Hiding in an alley, Elle remembered hunters shouting at replicants to run across the desert, and a moment later a stun shot knocked her down. The shot came from Joseph, who took her back to his apartment. At Wallace Tower, Wallace Sr. and his son learned of the senator's death during a game of go.
Joseph And The Test
Joseph checked her eye for the serial number carried by Nexus-8 replicants and found none. He then ran a Voight-Kampff test, asking about a mother who did not love her child and a kitten left beside a dumpster, and she described the pool memory and the man who had given her the tattoo. He ended the test and told her that she was a human with amnesia. While he was out, the decryption finished, and the recording showed Hooper filming Bannister and others as they shot at people fleeing across the desert.
One hunter on the recording explained that the targets were hardwired to submit to humans, and Elle understood that the prey had been replicants like her. She told Joseph that she would kill everyone involved and asked him to help her find them. He told her that replicants felt like humans and that her memories would never fade, and he agreed to help, although he advised her to walk away. With an ESPER machine he enhanced the frames until he had the faces of a police officer and a blonde woman.
The Grant Penthouse
Chief Earl Grant ordered the whole police force to hunt down the killer, whom the department named Black Lotus, and sent officers to raid Doc Badger's shop. They found only Joseph, while Badger printed the photographs upstairs. Elle reached the Grants' penthouse, got past the guards and held Josephine at gunpoint in the study. Josephine claimed she had only watched the hunt to please her husband and argued that Elle could not trust memories that were built or stolen, but under pressure she named the last guest as Dr. M.
Grant rushed home and attacked Elle, and in the struggle she stabbed him while his own gun killed Josephine. The blade runner Marlowe, whom Grant had secretly called in, arrived and fought her through the apartment. A gas explosion tore through the penthouse, and Elle escaped again. Davis had followed the chief home and saw the aftermath. With Bannister, Hooper and both Grants dead, only Dr. M remained of the people Elle had seen on the recording, and she set out to find out who he was.
The Truth About Her Memories
Elle tricked a receptionist into giving her the address of Dr. Murphy, the man the hunters called Dr. M, and broke into his laboratory at Victory and Sepulveda. He stunned her and strapped her into a memory pod, and with his assistant Goodman he extracted her memories to learn why his prototype had gone wrong. He confirmed that the desert memory was real. He also found scenes he had not made, including a perfectly sharp image of one place, and Goodman judged that the pool memory did not look artificial.
Elle broke free, and Dr. M shot Goodman in the shoulder while firing at her. With her blade at his throat, he told her that Wallace Sr. had organized the Doll Hunt and that the Wallace Corporation had supplied replicants to test obedient new models. She cut him down but spared Goodman, who told her that her memories were artificial but still hers. In a separate thread, Davis was interviewed by an oversight investigator, found to have delusional tendencies and placed on leave, and she resolved to find Black Lotus herself.
Wallace Tower
In the episode Free Will, Elle entered Wallace Tower hidden in a freight truck. She escaped a locked elevator and fought through the guards while Joseph fired on them through a sniper scope from outside. Security tracked her to the aviary, an indoor garden, where Marlowe was waiting because he had guessed she was behind the trouble. He beat and wounded her and told her that everyone had an expiration date, until a shot from Joseph hit him in the shoulder and let her get away toward the penthouse.
A hand scanner at the penthouse door identified her as Niander Wallace Jr., and Wallace Sr. shot her several times as she came in. He called her a defect, said the desert testing had gone better than he had hoped and told her that replicants only had the appearance of free will. Elle answered that they felt pain as much as any human and killed him with his own gun. As guards forced the doors, she jumped from the window, and Joseph caught her on his flying motorbike.
Joseph Confesses
Back at the apartment, Joseph told her about his last assignment as a blade runner, when he could not bring himself to retire a replicant singer named Selene and his partner Marlowe had her shot. Elle then returned to the pool memory and decided to find the hooded man. A memory machine borrowed from Doc Badger drew his face from her mind, and Joseph called the man, Niander Wallace Jr. The call revealed that Wallace Jr. had hired Joseph from the start, and he now ordered Joseph to retire her.
News broadcasts mourned Wallace Sr., and his son was named chief executive of the company. Joseph suggested that Goodman erase her bad memories so that she could leave the city. Goodman explained that replicant memories could be wiped only all at once and that her personality would remain. Elle feared losing the man in her memory but agreed once Joseph promised to be there when she woke. While she lay in the pod, Joseph confessed what he had hidden from her and then called Davis to take her into protective custody.
The Double
Before the police arrived, Water Lily, a newer replicant sent by Wallace Jr., cut through the laboratory guards and killed Goodman, who shut down the machine before he died. Elle woke to find a replicant with her own face calling herself the superior model. Water Lily explained that the old generation had to die before obedient new replicants could replace it, and the two fought through the laboratory until officers burst in. In an alley, Davis offered Elle protection if she would testify about Wallace, but Elle refused and ran.
Water Lily stabbed Davis before she could report the name behind the case, and Wallace Jr. recalled her to the old Tyrell building, certain that Elle would come to him. In the episode Artificial Souls, Marlowe found Joseph at his apartment, and their gunfight spread through the building to the roof, where Joseph shot him through a skylight. Elle found Joseph unconscious and woke him. Because the wipe had been stopped, she remembered everything, including his confession, and she refused to leave while Wallace Jr. was alive.
Facing Her Creator
In the final episode, Time to Die, Elle entered the old Tyrell Corporation pyramid and found Wallace Jr. waiting in its sanctum. He welcomed her as his angel of death and said she was everything he had wanted. Elle insisted that her memories belonged to her alone. When she tried to strike him, she found that she could not, because her design prevented her from hurting her creator. Water Lily then attacked, and the two copies fought across the sanctum until Elle defeated her double.
Wallace Jr. embraced Water Lily, praised her loyalty, then called her flawed and killed her with her own sword. He offered Elle a place at his side and her creator's love. She told him that she would be the last thing he ever saw and cut across his eyes with her sword, blinding him without breaking the limit on killing him. She then went to Joseph, who apologized for hurting her, and at his request she took the real trigger for his explosives from his case.
The Production Hall
Joseph had planned to destroy the hall where Wallace Jr. was growing his new replicants. Elle went with him into the green-lit chambers, but Joseph stayed behind to set off the blast and make sure she got clear, and he died in the explosion. Wallace Jr. survived, blinded but in charge of his father's company and its new models. Elle, who had lost the man who had first hidden her, left the ruins of the hall alone and went back to the city that had hunted her since her arrival.
Leaving Los Angeles
One month later she visited Joseph's apartment, where Doc Badger had found her sword and kept it for her. She took it and rode out of Los Angeles into the desert on Joseph's flying motorbike. The series closed on her departure, with the question of what she would do with her freedom left open. Her place in the wider chronology, between the original film and its sequel, is set out on the Blade Runner timeline, where the anime and both comics fall in 2032.
Bushwhacked In The Desert
The comic Blade Runner: Black Lotus: Leaving L.A. picked up just after the anime. Somewhere east of the city, an electrified snare knocked her spinner bike out from under her in a desert canyon. The bandits who set the trap had not seen a working spinner bike since the Blackout, and they planned to sell Elle to the Golden Garter, a club in a nearby town. When their leader decided to kill her instead, she beat all three of them and drove off in their truck.
Stranded In Fracktown
She drove the truck into Fracktown, a smoky industrial town in the desert, and stopped at the garage of the red-haired mechanic Junkett Jones. Junkett found that the bike's relay board was fried and recognized the machine as a type the police had used for crowd control during the Famine. Elle explained that a friend had built it for her shortly before he died. She had no money, so she traded the bandits' truck for the repair and was left waiting in a town she knew nothing about.
The fracking boss Emile Barnes soon arrived with his men and offered to buy the bike. Elle refused, and Barnes insisted that everything had a price until a group of workers stepped in and backed her up. Among them was Miguel Roman, who led a clean energy co-op outside town. He noticed that she was bleeding from a shoulder wound left by scavengers and offered to take her to his wife, a medic, and on the drive he warned her that Las Vegas had been off-limits since a dirty bomb hit it.
The Inland Empire Co-op
The Inland Empire Clean Energy Co-op stood on a mesa crowned with wind turbines and had kept running on wind and sun after the Blackout wrecked the grid. Elle told Miguel little about herself, only that her father had not been close to her, that she had no mother and that she had grown up quickly. In the medical dome his wife, Nyoko, cleaned and closed the wound, which had gone straight through the shoulder. The couple's young daughter, Kaja, soon took a liking to the guest.
While Elle washed in a guest hut, Kaja slipped in with a football and asked about the lotus tattoo on her back. Elle said her father had put it there and agreed to play, and the girl taught her the game in the days that followed. Unknown to them, the Wallace Corporation had recalled every replicant leased to the Fracktown plant, and its agent Mr. Menzes learned that Elle had been seen heading toward Las Vegas. A watcher on the rocks above the co-op was also following her games with Kaja.
The Raid On The Co-op
At the communal dinner, where Elle was amazed to be served a real potato, Miguel rose to toast her and was struck by a laser shot from a drone hidden outside. She grabbed a knife from the table and hurled it at the drone, destroying it. Moments later a rocket destroyed the lookout tower, and raiders on motorbikes and armed buggies poured in, setting the settlement on fire and taking captives with bolas, nets and catchpoles. When a raider caught her with a catchpole, she snapped it and knocked him out.
She disarmed several more raiders, including a masked man named Donny, and shot one with a seized laser pistol. Then Ivan Kozlov, the head of security at the plant, grabbed Kaja and held a gun to her head until Elle stood down. The raiders drove off with their hooded captives, Nyoko and Kaja among them, and Elle held her fire for fear of hitting Nyoko. She helped the wounded Miguel to the clinic. The co-op captured the drone pilot, Dixon, who revealed that the assassination had been Kozlov's idea.
The Heirloom Katana
Miguel took Elle to the house he had shared with Nyoko for more than ten years and asked what she would do about an angry dog that had wrapped its chain around a stake and was choking itself. Elle called the question meaningless. He then told her that he knew she was a replicant. Years earlier he had been a blade runner in the city, retiring Nexus models for good pay, until the killing wore on him and he decided to retire himself instead.
He gave her a katana, an heirloom from Nyoko's side of the family, and asked her to save his wife, his daughter and his friends. Junkett finished the bike and brought it out to the co-op, along with PKD-9, a nano-plastic explosive that stayed inert until a remote detonator set it off. Barnes demanded on video that the co-op disarm and gave it twelve hours. Miguel reasoned that this left six hours to strike first, and Elle rode out alone with the katana, the explosive and Dixon's security pass.
The Ride To The Fracktory
Elle raced the repaired bike through the canyons toward the plant at sunset. On the way she spotted a canyon filled with dead replicants, the bodies marked and discarded, and she knew at once that it was Kozlov's work. The sight hardened her purpose for the rest of the mission. She reached the fracking plant at dusk, climbed its wall and used Dixon's pass to open door 7B. Inside, she knocked out a worker, took his hooded jacket and studied a map that showed the route to the Golden Garter.
Inside The Fracktory
She slipped past a miner and knocked him out, then dropped from the ceiling onto two armored guards and knocked their heads together. In the old pleasure model quarters she found the captives eating synthetic food, struck down their guards with the katana and its scabbard, and Kaja ran to hug her. Nyoko recognized her great-grandfather's sword. Elle handed over the explosive and led the captives to a robot van at the loading dock, then went back when she found that Nyoko and Kaja had slipped away.
Nyoko had last-minute business to tend to, and before the two could leave, Kozlov and his armed guards cornered them. He had known that Elle was a replicant from the moment she arrived in the bandits' truck, and he compared her to the turncoat replicant that had cost him an eye off-world. Elle said she was tired of killing and accused him of dumping the bodies in the canyon. When she attacked, he used one of his own guards as a shield, and her blade killed the guard while he fled.
Escape From The Fracktory
Kozlov had already cancelled the pass, so Elle kicked door 7B open and reached the bike. Under fire from the guards she lifted off, and Nyoko jumped on with Kaja. When the girl fell, Elle dived and caught her in midair. Nyoko then asked her daughter to press the detonator, and the plant exploded as the three flew away. Barnes died in the blast. Kozlov crawled out of the rubble with half of his face burned away, exposing his implant, and vowed war on Elle and the co-op.
Preston's Betrayal
The freed captives had climbed out of the van to walk home, but they were gunned down in a canyon, and in Fracktown Kozlov blamed the explosion on the co-op and turned the crowd against it. A wounded co-op man, Preston, was brought to the medical center, where he told Nyoko that he had always loved her. He admitted that he had worked with Barnes and Kozlov to earn enough money to take her and Kaja back to Los Angeles, and when she refused him, he began to choke her.
Kaja ran for help, and Elle charged across the co-op with the katana and struck Preston down. Miguel had him taken to the brig for the co-op council to judge. Soon afterward Kozlov proposed a truce on video and asked Miguel to meet him alone at the Fracktown saloon at sunrise. Dixon warned that it was a trap, but Miguel believed open war would ruin the whole valley. Elle had already lost a friend who was just as reckless about doing the right thing, and she would not let it happen again.
Showdown With Kozlov
At dawn, gunmen took positions on the rooftops, but the truck that rolled into town carried Elle instead of Miguel. She told Kozlov that if he wanted revenge for Barnes and the plant, she was the one he wanted. Miguel arrived anyway with Nyoko, Kaja and Dixon, and Junkett flew in on the spinner bike. Miguel told the townspeople that Barnes and Kozlov had tried to have him killed and had taken his family hostage, and Dixon confirmed that Barnes had ordered the raid on the co-op.
Kozlov dismissed the dead pleasure models as disposable machines, and Elle vowed to make him pay for the replicants he had murdered, whom she called her sisters. She beat him in front of the town, and when he drew a knife, she disarmed him and held the blade to his throat. He confessed that the Wallace Corporation had recalled the replicant workers because he had tortured the pleasure models to death. Elle drove the knife into the ground beside him and let him live, and the townspeople turned on him.
The Ronin Leaves
Elle finally answered the chained dog question, saying she would set the dog loose even at the risk of being bitten. Miguel invited her to stay because she was family now, but she replied that her presence would never be safe for them. Nyoko pressed the katana back into her hands, saying it was hers now and that she recognized Elle as a ronin. Elle told the family that she still had answers to find in the desert and rode away while Kaja cried for her to come back.
At the Wallace Corporation, Menzes presented degraded footage salvaged from the plant's surveillance cameras. It showed that Elle had survived the explosion and had caused it. His employer, Mr. Wallace, ordered that her head be brought to him. The comic closed with the promise that she would return, which Titan fulfilled with a second series set in the city Miguel had warned her about. By then the company had sent a dedicated team after her, made up of people who each had a reason to want her found.
Memories In The Sand
In Blade Runner: Black Lotus: Las Vegas, the blinded Wallace Jr. sent a team called the Doll Squad after her. It included Kozlov, the mercenary Kate Marlow, who blamed Elle for the death of her brother, and Alani Davis, offered a repaired body and off-world passage. Elle, meanwhile, rode through the desert near the place where her life had begun, her rations gone. Her earliest real memories, of fear and then anger, returned so strongly there that she had to stop and hold her head.
That night she approached a scavengers' camp to steal food and learn more about where she had been made. One of the scavengers struck her from behind and dragged her into the firelight, not realizing that she was a replicant. Before it went further, mercenaries from Brekker Solutions, the company guarding a land train the gang had robbed, opened fire on the camp. Elle used the confusion to break away, reached her bike and rode through the night toward Las Vegas, which radiation kept most humans away from.
Ruins Of Las Vegas
At dawn she rode past the faded welcome sign into Las Vegas. She had never seen anything like it, and it reminded her of fairy tales she only partly remembered. Sand had drifted through the streets and against the abandoned hotels, and a pyramid, a sphinx and an obelisk gave the impression of an ancient civilization. At the center she found a terraced palace overgrown with plants, the only building that showed signs of life. She left the bike at the foot of the steps and climbed toward the entrance on foot.
Welcome To Paradise
At the top of the stairs stood two replicant queens, Cleopatra and Nefertiti, who welcomed her as a little sister and noted that only a replicant would enter Paradise of her own free will. They explained that Las Vegas had been the largest embarkation point for the off-world colonies and that Paradise had been its grandest pleasure palace, staffed by replicants playing Egyptians and Romans. After the dirty bomb, the surviving replicants were left free of human control, and the queens founded a kingdom in the intact casino.
They had allied with the replicants who played the Roman Empire under a truce called the Pax Vegas. Julius Caesar arrived with Caligula, Nero and his legionaries, found no serial number in Elle's eye and declared her human, ordering her taken to the arena. Elle defeated his guards within seconds and explained that she had been designed for combat, not for greeting tourists. She told the court that she had been made by Wallace and not by Tyrell, and her account persuaded both houses that she was one of them.
Princess Of Egypt
In Paradise, Elle was bathed and dressed in white linen and gold jewelry as befitted the rank of a princess meant to marry one of the three Roman kings. She was disturbed to learn that the women serving her were humans, and that the queens regarded them as slaves who should be grateful to be alive. Her own servant was a woman named Vanna. When Elle asked about her spinner bike, the queens told her she no longer needed it, because no one left Paradise once inside.
The queens warned her that not every replicant in the city accepted the two houses. They spoke of the Semita, radical replicants who worshipped the technology that had created them, lived in the old sewers and tunnels and hated replicants who imitated human culture. Meanwhile, the Doll Squad had been ambushed in the ruins by the Brekker mercenaries, who wanted the bounty for themselves. Kozlov was shot dead when he tried to surrender, and Davis was knocked unconscious and captured by a Roman patrol for the arena.
Games In The Colosseum
The queens led Elle to the Roman Colosseum, an arena built inside the old Sphere, where Caesar gave her the place of honor in the royal box. Human prisoners who had come to the city to steal were sent onto the sand with real weapons to face wild animals. Among them Elle recognized Davis, who had once offered to protect her in Los Angeles. When an animoid lion was released, she asked Caesar to stop the killing, and Cleopatra told her not to condemn replicants for copying human cruelty.
As the other prisoners died, Davis was left alone with a trident. Elle jumped from the royal box into the arena, still in her linen and gold, because she refused to watch people die in her name. She fought the animoid with her bare hands, broke its neck and helped Davis to her feet. Davis asked what she was doing in Las Vegas, and Elle answered that it was a long story. Caesar then ordered his guards to seize the traitor, and a large group of soldiers surrounded the two women.
Sentenced To Death
By saving a human in front of the crowd, Elle had embarrassed both Caesar and the queens who had sponsored her. Cleopatra accused her of disgracing them and declared that Princess Elle had betrayed the royal house of Las Vegas and that the penalty was death. Elle took a weapon from a soldier and disarmed several legionaries while Davis held others off with her trident. In the royal box, Caesar blamed the queens for bringing the runaway into Paradise and struck Cleopatra when she reminded him that the Romans were only guests.
Nefertiti stabbed Caesar in response, and Cleopatra raised the bloodied blade and declared the Pax Vegas over. Egyptians and Romans fought throughout the arena and the stands, the animal pens were opened, and an elephant, tigers, bears and a panther were released among the combatants. The fighting spread into the rest of the casino, which caught fire. Elle's single act of mercy in the arena had ended years of peace between the two houses of the city, and in the confusion no one was watching her.
Through The Old Sewers
During the fighting, Vanna appeared at an arena gate and led Elle and Davis into a service tunnel, saying she knew who had taken the bike. She told Davis that she was helping Elle because Elle was a better person than anyone she knew. The tunnels ran on top of the old sewer system and led to the underbelly, where the Semita ruled. Vanna warned that they had the bike and would not give it back easily, then returned to Paradise believing the Semita would kill her.
As the two walked on, Davis admitted that the Wallace Corporation had sent her in exchange for her mobility and off-world passage. Elle explained that Niander had made her believe she loved him, given her the tattoo, wiped her memory and released her into the Doll Hunt, then used her to kill the people standing between him and the company. It was the fullest account she ever gave of her own making, and she gave it to the officer who had been sent to bring her back.
A Fork In The Road
The tunnels divided beneath a sign marking an exit to the street. Davis asked why Elle had saved her and why she had not killed her in Los Angeles. Elle replied that she had seen enough brutality from humans and replicants alike, and that although she had been made to kill, no one had asked whether she wanted to. Her earliest memories were of cruelty, but she refused to believe killing was her only purpose. She agreed to let Davis go, then knocked her unconscious near the exit.
The surviving Doll Squad found Davis there. She told them that Roman replicants had captured her and that she had escaped, but she did not mention that she had seen Elle or that Elle had saved her life. She said only that she had heard talk of a newcomer who had arrived on a spinner bike. The team, reduced from seven members to four, considered that Elle might have died in the burning casino, and Menzes, Marlow, Tatsuo and Davis stayed in the ruins to keep searching.
Current Fate
Alone again, Elle went deeper into the tunnels to recover her bike and leave the city, suspecting that the Semita were less dangerous than the queens had claimed. An electrified net struck her and left her unable to move, and masked and hooded figures examined her and concluded that she could not be human. When she came round she demanded her bike back. They asked whether she was the rebel who had grown tired of the queens, and she made clear that she had no loyalty to them.
The Semita leader welcomed Elle to the underbelly as a friend, but she remained caught in the net and surrounded by armed members of the group. The Las Vegas series ended there, with an announcement that Black Lotus would return. At that point she was alive, held beneath a ruined city, hunted by a Wallace team still in the streets above, and estranged from the queens who had made her a princess. Wallace Jr. remained blind in Los Angeles and in control of the company that had made her.
Personality
Head writer Eugene Son described Elle as a blank slate, to the audience and to herself, an amnesiac in a world where memories could be made and copied. She spoke little and acted fast, and she treated violence as the answer to the people who had hurt her and other replicants. Mercy grew in her as the story went on. She spared Goodman, Kozlov and Davis, and the deaths of Miu and of the pleasure models she called her sisters shaped her sense of who deserved her anger.
Her identity was the question that drove her. She wanted to believe the memories that told her she was human, and the discovery that Wallace Jr. had written them did not make her accept his claim on her. She told him that her memories were hers alone. In the comics she spoke of herself as a free replicant without a master and answered Miguel's riddle by choosing to free the chained dog. She grew attached to the families she met but left each place once her own search called her onward.
Abilities And Combat Skills
As a new-model combat replicant, Elle was faster and stronger than the humans around her. She beat a street gang on her first night in the city with skills she did not remember learning, broke the neck of Bannister with a strength that Davis later identified as superhuman, and survived several gunshots from Wallace Sr. In the Las Vegas comic she killed an animoid lion with her bare hands and told the Roman court that she had been designed for combat. Her eyes glowed when her rage broke through.
She fought best with a blade and won her duels with Water Lily, a newer model, and with legionaries and plant guards. She also threw knives with enough accuracy to bring down a drone, used firearms and moved by stealth, dropping on guards from a ceiling and slipping through security with stolen passes. Her eye carried no serial number, which let her pass a Nexus-8 check and fool Caesar, and the hand scanner at Wallace Tower read her as Wallace Jr. One limit was built in, since she could not harm her creator.
Equipment
Her first weapon was the old sword that Doc Badger gave her for dealing with the gang, which she carried through the anime and which Badger kept for her after the production hall. In the comics she fought with the katana from Nyoko's family, which had belonged to Nyoko's great-grandfather and which was given to her a second time as a mark of her standing as a ronin. She also carried Hooper's encrypted camera, which held the recording of the Doll Hunt, until Joseph decrypted it for her.
Her vehicle was the flying motorbike that Joseph built, which he used to catch her when she jumped from Wallace Tower and which she rode out of Los Angeles. In the comics it was called a spinner bike, and Junkett identified it as a type the police had used for crowd control during the Famine. She also used the PKD-9 explosive and Dixon's pass at the fracking plant. In Las Vegas the queens dressed her in linen and gold, and the Semita took the bike before she could leave.
Relationships
Elle's relationships were shaped by the fact that almost everyone she met wanted something from her. Her creator wanted a weapon, the hunters wanted prey, and the police and later the Wallace Corporation wanted her captured or dead. A few people, chiefly Joseph in Los Angeles and the Roman family at the co-op, offered her shelter without asking for anything in return, and she protected them in turn. Others, such as Davis and Water Lily, began as enemies and ended in very different places.
Joseph
Joseph was her closest companion in the anime. A former blade runner haunted by the death of the replicant singer Selene, he hid her, tested her and told her she was human, and he enhanced the recording that led her to the hunters. He later confessed that Wallace Jr. had hired him to help her. He fought Marlowe to protect her, told her in the end that she had a soul and was more human than he was, and gave his life at the production hall so she could get away.
Niander Wallace Jr.
Her link to Niander Wallace Jr. defined her story. He designed her as a weapon against his father and the hunters, gave her the pool memory and the tattoo, and made her believe she loved him. He then sent Water Lily, a copy of her, and later the Doll Squad, after her. The limit he placed on her stopped her from killing him, so she blinded him instead. In Las Vegas, Davis argued that he had profited from Elle's killings and feared any public link to her.
Alani Davis
Alani Davis was the rookie officer who first saw Elle outside the boxing club and was the only police officer to argue that a replicant was responsible. She offered Elle protection in return for testimony and was stabbed by Water Lily for pursuing the case. In Las Vegas she joined the Doll Squad for a repaired body and off-world passage, but after Elle saved her in the arena and told her the truth, Davis kept Elle's survival from the rest of the team.
Marlowe
The blade runner Marlowe was Joseph's former partner and the most dangerous human Elle faced in Los Angeles. Chief Grant called him in privately, and he fought her through the Grant penthouse and wounded her in the Wallace Tower aviary, telling her that everyone had an expiration date. He believed replicants had no life and no soul. He died when Joseph shot him through a skylight, and in Las Vegas his sister Kate Marlow joined the Doll Squad to avenge him, blaming Elle for his death.
Doc Badger
Doc Badger ran the junk shop where Elle first found help. He sent away the gang leader and later Davis when they asked about her, armed her with an old sword, and introduced her to Joseph. His shop was raided by the police during the manhunt while he printed the photographs of the Grants upstairs, and he lent Joseph the memory machine that revealed Wallace Jr.'s face. After Joseph died, Badger found her sword and kept it at the apartment, where she collected it before riding out of the city.
Water Lily
Water Lily was a newer replicant built by Wallace Jr. with Elle's face. She called herself the superior model and believed the old generation had to die so that obedient replicants could replace it. She killed Goodman, stabbed Davis and fought Elle twice, first in the laboratory and then in the Tyrell sanctum, where Elle defeated her. Wallace Jr. then killed her with her own sword after calling her flawed, a fate that showed Elle how her creator treated the replicants who served him.
The Fracktown Family
In Fracktown she found a second family in Miguel Roman, his wife Nyoko Kojima and their daughter Kaja. Miguel, a former blade runner, knew what she was and trusted her anyway, Nyoko treated her wound and later gave her the family katana for good, and Kaja taught her football and helped her destroy the plant. The mechanic Junkett Jones repaired her bike and supplied the explosive. Elle refused their offer to stay because she believed her presence would put them in danger, and she rode away in tears.
Behind The Scenes
Much of what is known about Elle's creation comes from The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus by Roland Kelts, published by Titan in September 2022. The book collected concept art, storyboards and interviews with the people who made the series. It recorded how Elle was conceived as the first female lead in the franchise, how her look changed during design, how Jessica Henwick shaped her voice, and how Sola Digital Arts built and animated her. The comics, which continued her story after the anime, were produced separately by Titan with Alcon Publishing.
Creation And Writing
The anime was announced in November 2018 and made by Sola Digital Arts in Tokyo, with Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama directing. Joseph Chou initiated the project, and Shinichirō Watanabe served as creative producer. According to the art book, the original offer allowed the team two directions for a story, and both had a female lead. Kamiyama named Ghost in the Shell as an influence. Elle became the first female lead in a Blade Runner story, set between Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.
Head writer Eugene Son said the team wanted female writers to strengthen her point of view, and the credited writers included Alex de Campi, Brandon Auman, Margaret Dunlap and Kamiyama alongside him. Son described her as a blank slate to the audience and to herself. Kamiyama said that Elle was around twenty years old and that the team hoped viewers of that age would watch. The art book also noted that Miu was an Asian name and that many characters, Elle included, had Asian heritage.
Character Design
Early concept art in The Art of Blade Runner: Black Lotus gave Elle a grungier style, with pink and red hair, a fur-trimmed jacket, patterned tights and a katana with a charm. Later designs and the 3D model settled on dark braided hair, a bandage across the nose and a grey parka, the look she kept through most of the series. Storyboards in the book traced her martial arts and the recurring memory of the tattoo, and lighting director Manuel Alberto Rojas lit the desert road scenes.
The black lotus tattoo was drawn in concept art as a lotus with a skull-like center in a mecha science fiction style, and in the pool memory Wallace Jr. applied it with an airbrush-style tattoo gun. He described it as a symbol of purity marking a new beginning. The design sets of the series, including the glass-domed pool room and the pillared Tyrell sanctum where Elle confronted her maker, were developed in the same process and reproduced in the art book.
Jessica Henwick
Jessica Henwick voiced Elle in English, and Arisa Shida voiced her in Japanese. Henwick said in the art book that she connected with the character quickly and found the character artwork rich. She recorded in England while voice director Wes Gleason worked from Los Angeles and the directors followed from Japan, and the time difference kept some sessions running until five in the morning. She recalled that her father had quoted the Tears in Rain monologue from the original film to her.
Music producer Michael Hodges said the team wanted her voice soft and quite vulnerable at first so that it could change over the series, with strength in the fights and weakness in her low moments. Henwick also voiced Water Lily, who shared Elle's face model, and she joked about having to fight herself. Shida likewise voiced both roles in Japanese. The series ran for thirteen episodes on Adult Swim and Crunchyroll from 14 November 2021 to 6 February 2022, after a special aired the week before.
Motion Capture And Animation
Sola Digital Arts produced the series in full 3D computer animation, with motion capture used for the performances, as the credits of each episode show with their rigging and motion capture teams. The art book reproduced Elle's 3D character model next to her final concept designs, showing how the braided hair, parka and bandage were carried into the rig. Alcon Television Group and Williams Street were the production companies, and the episodes ran about twenty-two minutes each. Water Lily shared the face model of Elle, so the duels between the two were built around one shared design.
The Comics
Titan Comics continued Elle's story with Alcon Publishing. Nancy A. Collins wrote both comic series. Enid Balam drew Leaving L.A., published in four issues from August to November 2022 and collected in February 2023, and Jesús Hervás drew Las Vegas, published from 2025 to 2026. Kael Ngu painted the main cover of the first Las Vegas issue. The comics kept the anime's design for Elle, with her dark braided hair and katana, and dressed her in a dark top and a red scarf for the desert.
Conclusion
Elle began as a weapon designed by Niander Wallace Jr. and as prey in a hunt meant to test obedience, and she spent the anime turning that design against the people who had used her. She killed the hunters and the elder Wallace, blinded her maker and lost Joseph, then carried what she had learned into the desert. In the comics she rescued a family, refused to kill Kozlov and Davis, broke the peace of the replicant city and ended in the hands of the Semita, still searching for answers.
