Ursa was a Norse shieldmaiden in Predator: Killer of Killers, voiced by Lindsay LaVanchy. In 841 she led her son Anders and their clan against the Krivich chieftain Zoran, who had forced her to kill her father Einar when she was a child. She reached Zoran in his fortress above Lake Ladoga, and Anders cut him down. A Yautja hunter her warriors called Grendel then killed the rest of the clan. Ursa killed that hunter under the ice, and Anders died of his wounds in her arms. Hunters put her in suspended animation after that kill. She woke in an arena with John Torres and Kenji, and she stayed on the Grendel King's world so the two men could leave.

Biography

Einar And Zoran

Young Ursa kneels beside her father Einar as the hall burns behind them

Ursa was a child in Ladoga when the Krivich chieftain Zoran defeated her father, Einar, earl of that shore. Zoran would not take the victory and spare the girl. He forced a choice on her: he would kill the child, or the child would kill Einar. Einar tried to take the death himself and have his daughter spared. She could not swing the blade while he was on the ground in front of her.

Einar marked Ursa's face with his blood, the same mark his own father had put on him, and he bound her to avenge him. She killed her father under that order. The blood she wore in 841 was that mark. She treated Zoran's death as the only way to finish what the killing in Ladoga had started in her, and that aim lasted until the year she took a clan east to his fortress.

The Krivich Raid

Ursa with blood on her face, Anders and a clansman behind her

In 841 Ursa took her son Anders and the clan east to destroy the Krivich. The men on the ship talked about gold and about getting home. She would not let Anders join that talk. She made him name the reason they had come, the enemy who was alive, and she wanted him in the killing that night with a spear of his own. Before the landing she set one order for the whole clan: forget plunder, and kill the Krivich. If she fell, Anders was to finish the vengeance for her.

Ursa's warriors cleared a Krivich settlement and brought her the last man they had found. He called her Sea Queen and reported that every house had been searched and every fighter killed. She wanted Zoran, not that last spearman. He placed the chieftain in a great fortress many leagues to the east, high above Lake Ladoga, and he threatened to haunt Anders if they killed an unarmed prisoner. Ursa ordered a quick death for him anyway. She meant to reach the fortress before winter, and that night she made Anders hear how Einar had died.

Zoran's Fortress

Ursa forces a blood-covered shield through the door of Zoran's fortress

Ursa took the clan at Zoran's gate with her shield up. She chose the front door, with Anders beside her, and they fought through his warriors inside the fortress. When she reached the chieftain she named herself Stormbringer Shieldmaiden and Valkyrie of the Northern Seas, Ursa, daughter of Einar. She named Einar as the earl of Ladoga, so Zoran would know which child had come back for him.

Zoran did not know Ursa until she gave her father's name, and then he knew her as the child from Ladoga. He mocked her as a washerwoman and treated the girl who had failed to fight him as a coward. He was insulting Einar when Anders cut his head off. Ursa had carried the shield through the front door for that recognition, and the man she had crossed the sea to kill was dead in his own hall. His warriors were over the body when Grendel hit the survivors, before Ursa and Anders had left the room.

Grendel In The Hall

Ursa clings to Grendel's back and strikes him with her shield as his green blood spills

An older warrior named the attacker Grendel as he came through the fighters Ursa had just led against Zoran. He killed her clan one by one. Anders was badly wounded in that attack. Ursa got onto the hunter's back with her shield while green blood poured across his chest, and she struck him from above as the hall broke apart around them.

The fight carried Ursa and Grendel out of the fortress and down to the frozen shore of Lake Ladoga, where broken longships lay in the ice. She took him under that ice, where he could fight underwater, because the open hall had favored his size and the blast from his arm. The cold water hid her from his heat sight, and she held the shield between her body and the next blast from that weapon.

Under The Ice

Ursa drives an anchor chain and Grendel's shock blast into him under the ice

Under the ice Ursa fought Grendel with an anchor chain and her shield, among the wrecked ships in Lake Ladoga. He was a large Yautja, and in the hall his weight and his arm-blast had cut down the people who came with her. She did not try to beat that strength in a grapple. She got the chain onto him and met the next blast with the shield.

The shock from Grendel's arm drove him back onto an anchor in the wreck. Ursa had caught that blast on the shield, and the chain she had put on him held him against the iron. The point went through his head and out through his mouth. She killed him there, in the dark water, with his own weapon and the wreck under Lake Ladoga. She left the body under the ice and climbed toward the snow, where Anders lay with the wounds from the hall.

Anders In The Snow

Ursa kneels in the snow beside Anders below Zoran's fortress

Ursa found Anders on the snow below Zoran's fortress, breathing, with Grendel's wounds on him. He had taken Zoran's head in the hall before the hunter hurt him. He asked if she had killed the monster. She held him and called his name, and he died in her arms on the ice, her shield on the snow beside them and the broken ships along the shore.

On the ship Ursa had made Anders treat the voyage as revenge rather than gold, and she had ordered him to avenge her if she died in the fight. He killed Zoran in the fortress and then died from the wounds Grendel gave him in the hall, while Ursa was under the ice with the hunter. She knelt with him at Lake Ladoga until he was gone. The warriors who had rowed east with them were dead in the fortress and on the shore, and no one was left to take either of them home.

The Arena

Ursa, wearing an explosive collar, swings a long axe in the Grendel King's arena

After Lake Ladoga, hunters abducted Ursa and put her in suspended animation because she had killed one of their own. She woke with an explosive collar on her neck and no armor, in a cell with two men who did not speak Old Norse. John Torres tried English, then a little Japanese. Kenji spoke Japanese. She answered in her own tongue, and none of the three could build a plan the others could follow. Torres pointed them at a Yautja ship he thought he could fly. She did not take that as a reason to trust him.

Handlers marched Ursa, Torres, and Kenji onto the floor of a desert arena on Yautja Prime and presented them to the Grendel King. A translated order required them to fight to the death, and the winner was to face him. The collars could take their heads off from the stands. She was given a long axe, and she attacked the two men before they could turn that order into an alliance. Torres fired a flintlock and knocked the axe out of her hands. A giant beast was loosed into the pit and swallowed Torres. She and Kenji killed the creature from the outside, and Torres cut his way out of its belly.

The Grendel King

Ursa clings to the Grendel King's back during the fight on his world

Ursa got onto a hoverbike with Torres and Kenji when the collars began to arm. Torres shut the charges down. The Grendel King smashed the bike with a thrown bone ax, and the three of them ran for his ship. Ursa and Kenji fought the warlord on the ground and wounded him while Torres worked the controls. Torres blasted the Grendel King clear with the engines long enough for the others to get aboard.

The Grendel King threw a spear that severed Kenji's right arm, and soldiers hooked the ship with a harpoon launcher. Ursa told Torres and Kenji not to avenge her. She rode her shield down the cable and destroyed the launcher so the hull could leave without her. The warlord took her on the ground and sent a hunting party after the stolen ship.

Back To Stasis

Ursa with her eyes closed inside a stasis pod

The Grendel King put Ursa back into suspended animation once he had her on the ground. She lay in a pod with her eyes closed, in the grey clothes from the arena, the braided knot of her hair against the glass. Hunters had stored her after Lake Ladoga, and that first storage ended when she woke beside Torres and Kenji. This second storage followed the failed escape, after she had killed Grendel and then fought the warlord.

The hall around that pod held other captives who had killed hunters, humans and other species in the same rows. Ursa was placed near Naru, Mike Harrigan, and Dutch Schaefer. Each of those three had killed a hunter in a different century, and the pods set them beside her with no language between them. She remained in the pod while the hunting party went after the ship Torres and Kenji had taken.

Personality And Traits

Ursa by firelight, her father's blood running down one side of her face

Ursa lived by an order to pass vengeance on. Einar marked her face with his blood and bound her to avenge him, and she killed her father because he required it. She gave Anders the same command on the voyage to the Krivich: if she fell, he was to avenge her. Anders killed Zoran, then died of the wounds Grendel gave him, and the duty she had put on her son ended with him.

She did not lay that duty on Torres and Kenji. At the harpoon she told them not to avenge her, and she went down the cable so their ship could leave. The command had run from Einar to her, and from her to Anders, and she refused to pass it on again. Ursa stayed on the Grendel King's world, and she left Torres and Kenji with no command to avenge her.

Behind The Scenes

Lindsay LaVanchy voiced Ursa in Predator: Killer of Killers. Cherami Leigh voiced her as a child in the Ladoga flashback. Damien Haas voiced Anders, Doug Cockle voiced Einar, and Andrew Morgado voiced Zoran. Dan Trachtenberg and Joshua Wassung directed the film. Micho Robert Rutare wrote the screenplay from a story he shared with Trachtenberg, based on characters created by Jim Thomas and John Thomas. Ursa's chapter is called The Shield, and her lines in that chapter are in Old Norse.

The Third Floor, Wassung's studio, animated the film in Unreal Engine as its first full-length feature. 20th Century Animation, Lawrence Gordon Productions, Davis Entertainment, and Toberoff Entertainment produced it, and Benjamin Wallfisch wrote the score. 20th Century Studios confirmed the animated film and LaVanchy's casting in April 2025. It began streaming on Hulu in the United States on 6 June 2025, and on Disney+ outside that market, with a running time of 85 minutes.
