Predator vs. Spider-Man: Marvel Comic Overview

Predator vs. Spider-Man comic cover

Predator vs. Spider-Man was a Marvel crossover comic that brought a rogue Yautja hunt into New York City. The story followed Spider-Man during a brutal heat wave and blackout as he investigated a string of murders committed by Skinner Predator, a dishonorable Yautja who killed civilians and wore human skin as trophies. The conflict grew into a three-way hunt when Kraven the Hunter and a Yautja hunting party also came after Skinner.

Comic Overview

Predator vs. Spider-Man was part of Marvel's licensed Predator crossover line, following earlier encounters such as Predator versus Wolverine and Predator vs. Black Panther. Instead of using a traditional honorable hunter, the comic centered on a Bad Blood Predator who had abandoned the Yautja code. That choice let the story place Spider-Man's responsibility to protect ordinary people against one of the most brutal Yautja shown in Marvel's Predator continuity.

The series also became important to the larger crossover storyline because it changed Kraven's future. By defeating Skinner and surviving the Yautja hunting party, Kraven earned the Predators' respect and eventually joined them. That alliance later helped set up the Predator King's invasion of Earth in Predator Kills the Marvel Universe.

Plot Summary

The story began in New York City during a severe heat wave and blackout. Spider-Man discovered victims who had been skinned, mutilated, and displayed in ways that resembled Predator trophy-taking. Peter Parker tried to warn the city through the Daily Bugle, while J. Jonah Jameson framed the murders as the work of a killer called "the Skinner." Detective LaPearl also investigated the case and became suspicious of Peter because he repeatedly appeared near the crime scenes.

Skinner continued hunting through warehouses, subway tunnels, and the dark underground spaces beneath the city. He killed without honor, taking civilians and animals rather than seeking worthy prey. His lair was filled with remains from his victims, showing that he had treated New York as a private hunting ground. Mary Jane Watson was drawn into the danger after becoming trapped during the blackout and moving through the tunnels where Skinner hunted.

Spider-Man's investigation eventually revealed that similar killings had happened around the world during periods of extreme heat. When Peter uploaded evidence of the murders, it triggered a system watching for Predator activity. A Yautja hunting party arrived on Earth to kill Skinner for hunting without honor, acting in the role of Enforcer Predators who punished one of their own. Their arrival turned the conflict into a hunt between Spider-Man, Skinner, Kraven, and the Predators trying to restore honor.

Kraven the Hunter entered the story because he saw Skinner as the ultimate prey. He studied the crime scenes, tracked the Predator through the city, and deliberately kept New York in darkness to control the hunt. Skinner later tried to steal the Yautja hunting party's ship and escape Earth, but Kraven intercepted him before he could leave. Their battle ended with Kraven killing Skinner and claiming his severed head as a trophy.

Skinner's death triggered one final crisis. His wrist gauntlet activated a self-destruct countdown that threatened to devastate part of New York. Kraven cut off Skinner's arm, and Spider-Man took the device, wrapped it in webbing, and carried it away before dropping it into the East River. The bomb detonated underwater, sparing the city from the blast. Afterward, the surviving Yautja recognized Kraven's skill and spared him.

Key Characters

  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man - The New York hero who investigated Skinner's killings and stopped the final self-destruct blast.
  • Skinner Predator - A dishonorable Bad Blood Yautja who hunted civilians beneath New York City.
  • Kraven the Hunter - The human hunter who tracked and killed Skinner, earning the respect of the Yautja.
  • Mary Jane Watson - Peter Parker's partner, who was caught in Skinner's hunting ground during the blackout.
  • J. Jonah Jameson - The Daily Bugle publisher who reported on the killings during the crisis.
  • Detective LaPearl - A police detective investigating the murders and Peter Parker's connection to the crime scenes.
  • Yautja hunting party - Enforcer-style Predators who came to Earth to execute Skinner for violating the honor code.

Timeline And Canon

Predator vs. Spider-Man belonged to Marvel's non-canon Predator crossover continuity rather than the main Predator film timeline. It followed the same broad line as Predator versus Wolverine and Predator vs. Black Panther. Within that continuity, it was important because Kraven's victory over Skinner led to his alliance with the Predators, which later helped make the Great Hunt against Earth's heroes possible.

Legacy

The comic gave Marvel's Predator crossover line one of its darkest Yautja antagonists. Skinner was not an honorable warrior testing himself against a worthy opponent, but a rogue killer whose actions forced Spider-Man and other Predators into the same conflict. The story also turned Kraven into a bridge between Earth's hunters and the Yautja, making his role in later crossover events much more important than a single Spider-Man villain appearance.
