Badlands Creatures: A Guide To Monsters Of Genna
The planet Genna from Predator: Badlands is a world populated by aggressive wildlife and creatures adapted to extreme environments. The creatures of the "Death Planet" provide hunting targets for any wandering Yautja, although no Predator has yet survived on the planet. Weyland-Yutani is seen researching many of the creatures, although they are interested in obtaining only the most powerful one. The following section lists several notable lifeforms native to Genna, based on their appearance.
Kalisk
The Kalisk is regarded as the apex predator of Genna. On Yautja Prime, it commands fear among the Yautja species and is positioned as a nearly unstoppable force. The hunter Dek attempts to bring down the Kalisk in order to prove his worth, but even after decapitating it he is ultimately defeated when the creature regenerates. The Weyland-Yutani Corporation is interested in the Kalisk as well, trying to aquire a specimen for research (classifying it as XX0522).
Bone Bison
The Bone Bison is presented as a massive, resilient creature that Dek must face during his trials on Genna. Although often categorized among the planet's herbivorous or heavy-fauna species, it remains a formidable adversary due to its large frame, dense skeletal structure, and charging power. The Bone Bisons mainly venture on the "razon glass" fields on Genna, keeping Predators with softer skin away from them. Dek kills one of the Bone Bisons and cooks its meat on a fire, a rare sight of the Yautja eating habits.
Vulture
The Vulture is one of the airborne creatures native to Genna. It is characterized by a broad wingspan and an elongated tail. The Vulture is shown to be intelligent enough to use the environment against its prey, dropping rocks into the "spine thrower" plant fields to incapacitate its prey. During the events of the story, Dek encounters one of these aggressive birds, though it is ultimately killed by his synthetic companion Thia with Dek's shuriken. This was initially stuck in one of the vulture's nests, but they were not interested in eating a synthetic.
Vine Creature
The Vine Creature represents a blend of predatory behavior and plant-like appearance. Though specific details are limited, the creature is understood to camouflage itself within vegetation and attack unsuspecting prey. While Dek is able to hack many of its vines with his plasma sword, new vines appear in their place, making the creature especially hard to kill. The best strategy in dealing with it seems to be just escaping to the jungle's edge, which Dek does. The Weyland-Yutani synthetics are seen fighting the creature, proving that Pulse Rifles are effective against it.
Pod Creature
The unnamed pod creature is similar to the vine creature, living in the forests of Genna and attacking with its giant tentacles. However, it is not a plant, but instead an octopus-like carnivore that moves around the trees using its muscular tentacles. It has a giant mouth with sharp teeth, and raises any prey to its mouth with its appendages. When Dek and Thia were about to be eaten, Bud used its armored skin to stop its teeth from closing, saving the duo. Dek then stabbed it in one of the flesh parts of its body, killing it.
Giant Worm
The Giant Worm is a subterranean predator implied to exist beneath the planet's surface, similar to the sandworms of Dune. These creatures may emerge unexpectedly, dragging prey underground or attacking from below. One of these giant worms is seen emerging on top of a mountain, but Dek does not encounter it later in the story. Similar giant worms appeared in the Aliens vs. Predator 2 video game, although only in skeletal forms deep underground. The Giant Worm hints that many of Genna's creatures are not even seen.
Bud
Bud is a juvenile native creature that appears in Predator: Badlands. It is eventually revealed to be the offspring of the Kalisk, despite its small size and initially nonthreatening behavior. Bud is very agile, being able to "roll around" while her armored skin gives protection, even against razor grass. She forms a strong bond with Dek and Thia, forming a "wolf pack" with them. Bud helps to fight the native creatures of Genna, Weyland-Yutani synths, and even other Yautja.
Spitter Eel
The Spitter is a snake-like eel creature living near the waterfalls of Genna. It is able to spit strong corrosive acid at its enemies, similar to the Spitter Xenomorphs from the Alien species. Dek is able to tame the spitter and use it as an organic shoulder cannon after losing all his Yautja weapons. The acid proves to be especially effective against the Weyland-Yutani synthetics, incapacitating their bodies in seconds. It is left unexplained how the creature remains so loyal to Dek, even willing to sacrifice itself for the Yautja.
Conclusion
Genna is a dangerous world filled with hostile wildlife, many of which are studied by Weyland-Yutani and hunted by the Yautja. Several notable creatures appear throughout Predator: Badlands, each adapted to the planet’s extreme conditions. The Kalisk stands as the most feared lifeform, while other species such as the Bone Bison, Vulture, Vine Creature, Pod Creature, Giant Worm, and Spitter present different threats across Genna’s landscapes. Bud, a young native creature later revealed as a Kalisk offspring, accompanies Dek and Thia as they navigate the planet.
