Slightly was one of the hybrid children made by Prodigy in Alien: Earth, a dying boy named Aarush Singh whose mind was moved into an adult synthetic body. Adarsh Gourav played him. He was 11 when the Lost Boys entered the wreck of the USCSS Maginot in 2120, and there he let slip to Joe Hermit that Wendy was his sister. The cyborg Morrow then used the boy's family to turn him, and Slightly led Arthur Sylvia to the eggs and to his death.

Biography

Aarush Singh

Aarush Singh as a sick, shaved-head boy in a pale hospital robe in the Neverland garden before his transfer, in Alien: Earth

Slightly was born Aarush Singh, an Indian boy who grew up with his mother and his brothers and fell gravely ill as a child. His mother called him beta, and she and his brothers later said they talked about him every day. Like the other children chosen for the program, he was brought to the island of Neverland while he was dying, and he was there in the garden when Wendy told the new arrivals that the boy genius had fixed her and given her a body better than new. When she asked why grown-ups could not make the trip, Aarush guessed that their minds did not fit.

Wendy explained that grown-up minds were too stiff, while the minds of children could still make the move into a synthetic body. Aarush went through the transfer after her and woke in the body of a young man, with a code name taken from Peter Pan, as Boy Kavalier named all of his hybrids. His family was told that he had died, and a grave with his old name was made for him on the island. He kept his human name as a secret, as the rules required, and later said the people of Neverland had fixed him and that the island was his home.

The Crash In New Siam

Slightly beside Wendy in the Prodigy transport, with soldiers in grey gear behind them, on the way to the Maginot crash in Alien: Earth

When the Maginot came down in the Prodigy city of New Siam, Kavalier sent the hybrids in with the soldiers as their first mission. Slightly flew in beside Wendy, who was worried about her brother, a medic working somewhere in the city. She told him that her brother was not like them, that he could break and bleed and burn, and that she had made him stay. Inside the ruined tower, on the sixty-fifth floor, Wendy broke away from the group, and Kirsh told Slightly to go with her while the rest of the team moved on to rescue survivors.

The two hybrids found Joe Hermit deeper in the wreck, wounded after a creature had killed the people in the halls. When Hermit looked for a cut on Slightly, the boy told him there was none, that a bear had eaten the men in the hall, and that they did not bleed red anymore. Hermit called them synthetic, and Wendy said they did not like that word. In the elevator Slightly told him that he was 11, that Wendy had just turned 12, that Wendy was a machine name, and that his own name was Aarush and hers was Marcy.

Inside The Maginot

Kirsh ordered the group to secure cargo in the front of the ship, where Smee was already waiting, and Wendy said they should go because Smee did not like being alone. When Hermit was dragged away at the eggs, Wendy left Slightly behind to guard them and went after her brother on her own. Slightly and Smee stayed with the eggs, joking that they were not chicken eggs, until a man stepped out of the dark and told them to drop their guns. Smee said they did not have any, and Slightly added that they were not allowed to.

The stranger was Morrow, the Maginot's cyborg security chief and the only survivor of the crew. He asked where they were, mocked the two boys as a couple of kids, and grabbed Slightly by the neck with his blade arm while asking when a machine was not a machine. Kirsh arrived and told him to let the boy go, and Morrow claimed the ship as his own before he slipped away. Back at the base Smee told Kirsh that the cyborg had threatened Slightly, and Slightly pointed out that it had been his neck.

Back On Neverland

Slightly came home from the crash believing that Kirsh really relied on him. He did not know that Morrow had hidden a small disc on him in the wreck, and that the cyborg could now reach him in his room on Neverland. That night Morrow apologized for scaring him, and Slightly told him that everybody needed a friend. Morrow repeated the line back and asked the boy to be his friend. Over the next days the voice kept him up at night, reading him riddles while Kavalier read Peter Pan to the other children.

When the hybrids ate synthetic ice cream with Joe Hermit, Slightly objected to having him there. He said they all had brothers and mothers who were not on the island, and that if their families could not come, Hermit should not be there either. Wendy called him rude, and Slightly answered that he was the oldest, though Hermit agreed that all of their families should have been there. Kirsh, who could listen to the hybrids from afar, asked him whether he would tell on a friend who hurt someone, and Slightly said he would always stand by his friends.

Morrow's Bargain

Slightly, played by Adarsh Gourav, looking down with a troubled face in the Neverland jungle in Alien: Earth

Morrow first asked Slightly to steal one of the monster eggs and bring it to him. When the boy said that would be stealing, Morrow asked how anyone could steal from a thief and called it restitution. To win his trust he gave the name Kumi, and in return Slightly told him he was really Aarush Singh, with an H. Slightly then called back to say he could not do it because the hybrids were his friends. Morrow told him he was with his mother, who believed her son was dead, and put her on the line.

Slightly begged him not to hurt her, and Morrow changed the plan. Instead of sneaking an egg out, the boy was to bring a person to the eggs, let the hatchling take their face, hide the body for a day or two, and call him when the creature fell off. Slightly tried to lead Hermit away to the lab, telling him it was a secret for Wendy, until Rashidi took Hermit out on patrol. In the jungle he told Smee that being a grown-up was not supposed to be fun, then gave him a grown-up hug.

Arthur On The Beach

When Arthur Sylvia came to the lab looking for Tootles, Slightly said Kirsh had asked him to watch the place. He locked the door with Arthur inside, told him through the glass that a man had his family, and listened as a Facehugger took the scientist. He hid the body in his room, offering Arthur food and saying sorry over and over, until Smee forced his way in. Slightly made him promise not to tell, swore the man from the ship only wanted the monster and would let Arthur go, and begged until Smee agreed to help.

Kirsh caught them in a corridor, and Slightly confessed that the man had been talking in his head. Kirsh only told them the quickest way to the beach. When Arthur woke, the boys said a gas leak had confused him, and he told them he had fought with his Dame. On the sand a Chestburster tore out of him. Smee wept that Slightly had lied, but Slightly dragged him on, and when Morrow found them he sobbed that nobody had told him about a second monster. Morrow told him that grown-ups owned up to their mistakes.

The Cell And The Uprising

Slightly in a dark Prodigy holding cell on Neverland, looking up at the others with wide eyes, in Alien: Earth

Kirsh had Slightly and Smee grounded, and the Lost Boys ended up together in a cell. Curly accused someone of snitching, and Wendy told them she had found their graves, naming Rose, Marcy, Chris, Aarush, and Jane. When Curly said they could not die, Slightly reminded them that Isaac had died. He said Isaac's name had been Steven and that his mother had called him Steve-O. Curly insisted that would not happen to them, and Slightly answered that a fly had eaten Isaac's face.

When Wendy turned the island against the staff, she called it hide-and-seek and sent Smee and Slightly after Kirsh and the cyborg. On the way Smee asked whether Arthur was still lying where they had left him and said they had done a bad thing. Slightly said it was not their fault and that the adults had made them do it. They found Kirsh crawling with his back broken, and he told them to tie up Morrow before he came to. Over him the cyborg said that he had never hurt the boy's mother.

Personality And Traits

Slightly was the most talkative of the boys and the worst at keeping a secret. He told Hermit the hybrids' real names within minutes of meeting him, told Morrow his own, and answered strangers when Smee told him to shut up. He liked to be useful, boasted that Kirsh relied on him, and claimed to be the oldest of the group though Curly and Isaac were older. He also longed for home in a way the others hid, and resented that Wendy could watch her brother while his own family thought he was dead.

That longing was the lever Morrow used. Slightly knew right from wrong well enough to call the egg plan stealing and to refuse to hurt his friends, but the sound of his mother's voice broke every refusal. Once he had chosen, he held to the lie, dragging Smee from Arthur's body to keep his appointment on the beach. Afterwards he blamed the adults rather than himself, saying they had been made to do it, the same way the voice in his head had told him grown-ups never owned up.

Skills And Abilities

As a hybrid Slightly had a fast, strong synthetic body that did not bleed red, and he joked that the children could now only be crushed, exploded, or set on fire. He carried a tracker that let Prodigy follow him, and Kirsh could listen to him from a distance. Those same systems made him easy to exploit, since the disc Morrow planted on him in the Maginot gave the cyborg a private line into his head on Neverland. He could carry a grown man across the island with Smee, and he moved through the labs and guarded doors without question.

His mind was still that of an 11-year-old boy. He stumbled over words like restitution and contamination, needed riddles explained, and wanted to ask Smee whenever he did not know an answer. He could follow a plan that someone else laid out step by step, but not see where it led, and he had no answer when a second creature came out of Arthur. In the uprising he was still one of the hybrids Wendy trusted with a task, sent with Smee to take down Kirsh and Morrow.

Behind The Scenes

Slightly was played by Adarsh Gourav, the Indian actor best known for the lead role in The White Tiger, which earned him a BAFTA nomination for best actor. Like the rest of the hybrid cast, he played a child inside an adult body, and much of his part depends on the gap between the grown man the soldiers see and the scared boy who wants his mother. Series creator Noah Hawley built the hybrids around the Lost Boys of Peter Pan, and the first season was filmed in Thailand.

In J. M. Barrie's story Slightly is the Lost Boy who claims to remember the time before he was lost, which matches the show's Slightly, the hybrid who keeps returning to his human name and his family. His story with Smee, played by Jonathan Ajayi, gives the season its closest friendship among the hybrids, and the bargain with Morrow is how the cyborg gets inside Neverland. The loss of Arthur on the beach is one of the turning points of the season, and the moment the Lost Boys stop trusting the adults.

Famous Quotes

  • "We don't bleed anyway. Not red anymore."

  • "We-We're grown-ups now."
  • "It's not our fault. They made us."

Conclusion

Slightly was Aarush Singh, the boy who could not keep a secret and could not stop missing his mother. He gave away Wendy's name to Joe Hermit in the Maginot, survived Morrow's blade there, and carried the cyborg's voice home with him to Neverland. Under the threat to his family he led Arthur Sylvia to the eggs and then to the beach where he died. At the end of the first season he stood with the Lost Boys over a broken Kirsh, told that the threat had been empty all along, and still insisting that it had not been his fault.
