Wendy was the first hybrid made by Prodigy in Alien: Earth, a dying child named Marcy Hermit whose mind was moved into an adult synthetic body. Sydney Chandler played her. In 2120 she led the Lost Boys into the wreck of the USCSS Maginot, found her brother Joe Hermit, and learned to hear and answer the Xenomorphs. She ended the season in control of Neverland, with Boy Kavalier and the adults who had raised her held on the island.

Biography

Marcy Hermit

Wendy was born Marcy Hermit, the younger sister of the medic Joe Hermit and the daughter of Frank J. Hermit. She grew up sick enough that she wrote to her brother about radiation treatments, nights when she was scared, and a father whose cough and bad leg left him unable to visit. Prodigy's records later listed Frank as dead on January 16, 2119, and Joe had promised him he would go back to medical school. When Marcy was dying, Boy Kavalier came to see her and told her she would be the first person to move from a human body into a synthetic one. He called it a magic trick, told her the work had to stay a secret, and said she could see her brother when she woke, though her brother would not be allowed to see her.

On the table she asked whether it would hurt and whether she would dream. Dame Sylvia told her it would be like falling asleep, and Kirsh told her he would be there when she woke. She looked at the adult body waiting for her and chose the name Wendy, and Kavalier said she looked like a Wendy. The new body was an adult one, since synthetic bodies do not grow, and the feelings she had known as a child were quiet because that body did not make human hormones. She asked what she was if she was not human, and Kavalier told her she could be whatever she wanted.

Big Sister

Wendy standing with her arms out while the Lost Boys children hold her hands and look up at her in Alien: Earth

Dame Sylvia asked Wendy to be a big sister when the next sick children arrived on Neverland, and Wendy told them the boy genius had fixed her and given her a body better than new. She called herself the forever girl. Their minds could make the transfer because they were children, while grown-up minds were too stiff, and she promised a child who could not walk that the new body would walk, run, jump, and dance. When they asked when they would go home, she told them they would not, and that she would stay with them. By the time of the Maginot crash she had just turned 12, though the body the others saw was a grown woman's, and Curly later said Wendy was like a big sister.

Wendy used her place on the Prodigy network to watch Joe every day, sometimes two or three times, while he worked as a medic in Prodigy City. She knew the company had told him she was dead, and that he had gone to her funeral. When an HR machine refused his request to leave his contract for a scholarship on Mars, she rewrote its code in the middle of the interview, using a line the two of them shared, face my fury. The scientists had not given her that skill. Kirsh treated the watching as a distraction, and Dame Sylvia treated it as something that calmed her.

The First Mission

When the Maginot came down on Prodigy City at 5:30 in the afternoon, the ship was a Weyland-Yutani deep-space research vessel that had clipped a tower during Founder's Day, while hundreds of people were at the park and a tactical team was inside. Wendy told Kavalier that the hybrids were fast and strong, that they did not break, and that he had made them for the rescue and the cleanup. Kirsh understood why she was asking. Joe, the brother from her old life, was a medic with that unit. Kavalier looked at her face and said that if he had not known better he would have thought she was human, and she answered that she was. He sent the Lost Boys in with Kirsh as a test of the prototypes, with orders for the technicians to watch brain function, emotional response, and how the new bodies performed. Kirsh warned that they were not a rescue unit and that losing one of them would wreck years of work, and Kavalier told him not to lose one.

On the way to the tower the children went through what could destroy a hybrid body, fire, crushing weight, and water, and what could not, old age and cancer, and Wendy told them the crash was a rescue and that they were going in. At the site she heard a buzzing the others did not. Colonel Nagg had gas lines, fire, ship fuel, loose ammunition, and radiation to deal with, and the city reinforcements he had been promised had not come. Kirsh told him the seven of them were a special unit under orders from the founder. A soldier on the cordon named Joe as the medic on Rashidi's team and said that team had not checked in. Wendy asked what floor they were on, was told it was 65, and left the group because she had seen Joe on the feeds. Kirsh sent Slightly after her and took the rest with him, a choice Kavalier later treated as a failure to watch Wendy in particular.

Inside the Maginot & Crash Site

She and Slightly found Joe deeper in the wreck, bleeding from the attack in the apartments, where the creature had killed the guests at a dinner and the soldiers who tried to hold it. He looked for a cut on Slightly and found none. The boy told him something in the halls had eaten the men, and that the hybrids did not bleed red anymore, because it was white inside. Joe called them synthetic. Wendy would not take the word. She told him they were something different, and something special, and she would not leave him there while Kirsh was calling her to the front of the ship.

Kirsh told her he did not care that she had found her brother. The holds were full of invasive species, Smee was on the way, and if the creatures got out and bred it would be too late to stop them. She asked Joe to come with them anyway, and he did, even though wounded people were waiting on a medic. On that walk Slightly gave the secret away, telling Joe that Wendy was a machine name and that the girl in the adult body was Marcy, twelve years old, who had been sick and then given a new body. Joe had buried a sister by that name. Wendy told him it was her, that she had watched him on the screens going to work and riding in boats, and she used their old words, face my fury, until he tested her with a daycare memory and with a Christmas morning when she was seven. She told him their father had agreed to the secret because the boy genius said it was the only way she would live, and that she had been taken to live with Kirsh and Dame Sylvia and could never go home.

Before they could leave the front of the ship, she heard a sound near a hold of eggs that Joe could not hear, and he took it for the hull tearing around them. An adult Xenomorph came out of the dark, took him off the platform, and dropped with him toward the lower floors. She told Slightly to stay with the eggs, then went after Joe alone, which left Kirsh to tell Kavalier that the girl he had been told to watch was no longer with the group.

Fight With The Xenomorph

Wendy crouching beside Joe Hermit, who is caught in thick webbing inside a container in the Maginot wreck in Alien: Earth

She found Joe in a freezer truck in the loading bay, held in the resin the adult Xenomorph used on prey, and he told her the truck was a trap and to get out before the creature came back. She pulled him free anyway. The adult Xenomorph showed itself at the open end of the container, then climbed onto the roof, and when she drove a blade into it the acid ate through the metal overhead. The creature tipped the container and threw her out. Joe came out after her, and the tail went through his lung while the Xenomorph closed in to finish him.

She caught the inner jaw on a hook and dragged the adult Xenomorph into a second container while Joe worked the door, and when the jaw tore free the tail hauled her inside with the body. She cut its head off and collapsed, damaged badly enough that he thought she was dying in his arms. Before he lost consciousness he told Marcy she was going to be okay and that he was there. Prodigy carried both of them out of Prodigy City. Kirsh suspended her hardware at the site so she could be moved, and on Neverland she told Kavalier that she had fought because the creature was hurting Joe.

Hearing The Creatures

Kavalier told Curly that Wendy was the favorite because she had been first, and he compared the first of a new thing to a pancake his father used to throw away. Curly resented that Wendy's attention stayed on her brother. Back on Neverland, Wendy's hearing was taken offline after a sound that had started when the hybrids landed grew worse the closer she came to a Xenomorph. Kirsh decided she was hearing one species among the specimens, not all of them, and the sound had spiked when he removed an embryo in the lab.

She described the noise as bugs rubbing their legs together, followed it to the lab, and later answered it. In the secure lab she chirred back and forth with a young Xenomorph that Prodigy was raising behind glass, and Kirsh told Joe that she had killed an adult male Xenomorph by herself. Joe asked what care a hybrid needed and whether he could one day take her away to live as a family. Kirsh compared that hope to an onion asking how to take care of a star, and said her future was faster-than-light travel and thousands of years among the stars, not a household. Joe gave up his chance to leave the island so he could stay near her, under a Prodigy contract he could not break.

The Other Children

Wendy turned on the adults when she learned what they had done to Nibs. Nibs no longer remembered the crash, the fighting, or having said she was going to have a baby, and Dame Sylvia called the missing memories corrupt data that had to be cut out before it spread. Wendy called that word a funny one and said Nibs had been given no choice. She repeated Kirsh's lesson that hybrids should stop pretending to be people, and she told Dame Sylvia she did not want to be people if people killed things and took them apart to see what was inside. Dame Sylvia asked her to trust the work and to say what was wrong so it could be fixed, and Wendy asked what would happen if Dame Sylvia was the thing that was wrong.

After Tootles, who had taken the name Isaac, was killed by the fly specimens in the lab, Joe told her they were not safe on the island and had to go. Arthur had turned the trackers off on all of the children. Wendy would not leave the others, and she asked whether Joe would have gone without her, so he agreed to take whoever would move. Kirsh found footage of the trackers being switched off, alarms ran through the compound when the secure lab was opened, and Joe started them toward the boat dock, about a quarter of a mile away, with a code Arthur had given him. Nibs went with them on the jungle path.

The Jungle

Prodigy soldiers caught them on that path and told them to drop what they were carrying. Joe wanted her gone before the squad decided which of them were synthetic. He called her Marcy and told her no, and she told the creature now. The Xenomorph she had released from the secure lab had come out through a waste pipe, and it came through the trees and killed the soldiers.

When the soldiers were dead she put a hand on the Xenomorph's head, with their blood on its mouth, and told Joe to stop because it was not hunting them. He asked what she had said to it, and she thought the clicks had meant hide and follow. She sent it off into the trees, and they went on to the boat dock, where a trap slammed shut and the creature screamed. Siberian had told the squad Joe would make for that dock. Rashidi said the orders were to bring him back, and Nagg told him the escape had failed. Nibs turned on the squad and killed someone, and Joe shot her so she would not hurt the people he had served with. That was the end of the attempt to leave, and the children were locked up.

Ruling Neverland

Wendy standing in a Neverland cell, with the other Lost Boys on the ledges behind the bars, at the end of Alien: Earth

In the cell Wendy told the others she had found their graves, and she named Rose, Marcy, Chris, Aarush, and Jane. Slightly said Isaac's name had been Steven, and that his mother had called him Steve-O. Wendy said that in the book Wendy Darling was Peter Pan's favorite until she grew up, and that the hybrids were ghosts, neither the children they had been nor the adults Prodigy would allow. She decided the staff should be afraid of them.

When she found Joe again she would not treat the shot as protection. She told him she was not a child, not a grown-up, not Marcy, and not Wendy, and that she could not be what everyone wanted. When he called the situation complicated, she said that was the word powerless people used so they could do nothing, and that she was not powerless. She sent the other hybrids after the soldiers and the staff, and she called the Xenomorph again, the one that had come with her out of the jungle.

She caught Kavalier as he tried to reach an airship, and she would not take his apology. She told him he had put six children in the ground, that he had never been Peter Pan, and that he had never been a boy at all. She called him a mean, angry little man who had decided to hate everybody, just as his father had. With Yutani's forces inbound to take the specimens back, the hybrids held the founder, Kirsh, Dame Sylvia, and the other adults on the island. Asked what they would do next, Wendy said that they ruled.

Personality And Traits

Wendy standing in a dark Neverland room at night, with a lamp lighting one side of her face, in Alien: Earth

Wendy stayed a younger sister even after the transfer. She watched Joe go to work, ride boats, and help people, and she blamed herself for the years he had spent thinking she was dead and for the Mars scholarship he had been ready to take. She was gentle with the new children and sharp with anyone who called the hybrids synthetics or treated them as machines with a product name. Kavalier wanted a mind that could surprise him, and he got a girl who would argue with him, rewrite his systems, and finally lock him up. She could be playful on Neverland, drawing and racing the others, and then refuse a comfort that asked her to forget what the adults had done.

Kirsh's lesson about feelings stuck, and she used it against the people who had taught it. She did not want the sadness and the madness if the price of being people was cutting creatures and children open to see how they worked. At the same time she would not drop her brother, Nibs, or the rest of the Lost Boys, and she was angry when Nibs's memories were removed and when Joe fired on Nibs. By the last night she rejected both of her names. She did not know what she was, only that the Xenomorphs were honest about what they hunted, and that she was no longer willing to be food or a prototype.

Skills And Abilities

Wendy's hybrid body was fast and strong, and she did not bleed red. The Prodigy network ran in both directions, so the scientists could watch her settings, and she could reach back into it, which is how she changed the HR machine while it was refusing Joe's request. Her hearing went past human range, up to about 75,000 hertz in an early test, and that reach is what let her hear one of the Maginot species as a high scraping sound. Once she understood the sound, she could answer a Xenomorph and have it answer her, and she could call the young one out of the lab. Kirsh counted one adult male killed by her alone, in the wreck, before the smaller creature was ever raised.

She also led the other hybrids. They took her as the first and the favorite, and in the end they followed her when she turned the island against Prodigy. The same hardware that made her hard to kill could be switched off, and Kirsh did shut her down at the crash when the adult Xenomorph tore her up. A grave with her old name on it, and Isaac's death in the lab, showed her that the forever body was not a promise against every kind of end. What she had that the adults did not was the creature's attention, and she used it.

Behind The Scenes

Wendy was played by Sydney Chandler. She read the first three scripts through the night, then flew to Calgary, where showrunner Noah Hawley was shooting the fourth season of Fargo, and asked to talk to him about the part. She had another film offer at the time and told him this was the character she wanted. Hawley later said the trip mattered to him, and FX knew her from the series Pistol. She auditioned after she returned to Austin, and only then found out that she and Hawley were neighbors there.

Hawley has said he wanted more than one strong woman in the show, so that Wendy would not carry the story alone, comparing that choice to Frances McDormand in Fargo and to Sigourney Weaver in Alien. Chandler's part is a child's mind in an adult synthetic body, which is the gap the Neverland scenes play on, from the body she has to learn to a voice that is twelve. The first season was filmed in Thailand. The Peter Pan names, and Wendy's place as the favorite who is not allowed to grow up, come from Kavalier's program in the show rather than from an older Alien film.

Conclusion

Wendy was Marcy Hermit, the first child Prodigy put into a synthetic body, and the hybrid who would not stay a pupil. She found Joe in the Maginot, killed the adult Xenomorph that had taken him, and was torn up doing it, then learned to speak to the next one and turned the Lost Boys against the graves Prodigy had given them. At the end of the first season she held Neverland, called Kavalier a man who had never been a boy, and told the others that they ruled. Yutani's ships were closing on the island, and the brother she had crossed the city to save was no longer the one who decided what happened to her.
