Shoko Kawakami was the onna-oyabun, the female boss, of the Kawakami-gumi crime family in Kejime, a story in the second issue of Marvel's Predator: Black, White & Blood. She was a yakuza leader rather than a samurai, with a mechanical arm and a mask over her lower face. Years earlier she had offered her arm to the clan so that she could stay after giving birth to her son, Akito, outside marriage. The Yautja later put her in a jungle arena on Yautja Prime, where she killed the young hunters sent against her before she understood that the fight was their initiation, and afterwards she was sent home.

Biography

Earlier Life

A clan member holding a long sword over the tattooed arm Shoko Kawakami laid across a table in front of the Kawakami-gumi council in Predator: Black, White & Blood #2

Shoko was the daughter of the oyabun who led the Kawakami-gumi, and she had a son outside marriage. Her father called the birth a disgrace. The clan offered her exile instead, with a warning that there would be no second chance after this one. Shoko refused to leave because the clan was her home, and she vowed to bring only honor to the family for the rest of her life. She laid her tattooed arm across a low table while a clan member in a black suit stood over it with a long sword. The council accepted the sacrifice and declared her one of them.

Shoko raised her son Akito inside the clan and trained him herself. In one lesson she taught him archery in front of a snow-capped mountain, standing close behind him in a training robe. Her mechanical hand steadied the bow while her other hand guided his draw, and she told him to pull the string back gently. Akito held the arrow level with his cheek and watched the shot while his mother watched over his shoulder. Memories of these lessons later returned to Shoko in the middle of the hunt.

Arrival On Yautja Prime

Shoko next appeared in an arena on Yautja Prime. The arena floor was a dense jungle surrounded by tall stone stands, and the stands were packed with Yautja spectators. A glass cube rose above the trees with a large hourglass on top of it. Its panels showed Shoko's masked face beside the masks of the Yautja who were hunting her, and the sand ran down while the contest went on. She wore a pale hooded jacket, dark trousers, and boots, and she carried a long sword in her mechanical hand. She was ready to kill every one of the hunters if it gave her a second chance to do right by her son.

Early in the hunt, Shoko stood on a rock ledge above the jungle with a dead hunter lying at her feet. Green blood was splashed across the stone and her jacket, and a smaller pool of red blood spread beside her boots. In her right hand she held up the severed head of a Yautja by its hair, with green blood running from it. Her left arm, which held the sword, was mechanical from the shoulder down. The crowd watched from the stands while the jungle below hid the surviving hunters.

The Kejime Arena Hunt

The hunters sent against Shoko were Young Blood Predators, and they attacked her one after another in the jungle. One of them closed on her with extended wristblades while she dodged with her sword drawn and green blood sprayed between them. Shoko judged her enemies intelligent and highly skilled, and she knew that they had the advantage of fighting on their own ground. She believed that she should have died in the arena. She went on fighting through the trees, and the Young Blood attacks did not stop.

The fight also moved into the air above the jungle canopy. A Young Blood flew over the treetops on a Yautja jetpack, and Shoko chased it on a pair of red-glowing thrusters of her own, holding her sword in front of her. Where her thrusters came from was never explained, and the story did not show whether the Yautja had made them. The chase took both of them high over the jungle before the fight returned to the ground and the trees of the arena.

The Young Blood Fight

Rain fell on the arena during the last stage of the hunt. Shoko cut a Young Blood across the leg as it rushed her, while another young hunter crouched in the trees behind it and a third dropped toward her with its wristblades. She brought the wounded hunter to its knees and stood behind it with her blade across its body as the hourglass ran low. Throughout the fight she thought about Akito. She realized that she had placed unfair expectations on her son because of the unfair expectations she had placed on herself, and that she had not seen it at the time.

When she saw the unmasked face of one of the hunters up close, Shoko wondered why the Yautja would let their younglings take part in such a brutal form of entertainment. She then understood that they had never been hunting her for entertainment. The contest was a ritual, and the children she had been fighting were being initiated. Shoko looked at the green blood on her hand and accepted that she had killed them. She decided that she had no honor and had broken the promise she made to her father before the Kawakami-gumi council.

The Journey Home

The hourglass emptied, and a horn sounded over the arena. The horn marked the end of the initiation and the death of the last youngling. Shoko had survived, and her reward was a one-way trip home. Unlike the younglings she had killed, she had been given a second chance, and she resolved that atonement for her sins would be the legacy she left behind, starting with her son Akito. The story closed on Shoko lying on an operating table aboard a spacecraft, with robotic arms working over her body and a planet visible through the window beside her.

Conclusion

Shoko Kawakami was the onna-oyabun of the Kawakami-gumi, who gave up her arm to stay in her father's clan after having a son outside marriage. Taken to an arena on Yautja Prime, she fought her way through Young Blood hunters with her sword and her thrusters. Only at the end did she realize that the hunters were younglings undergoing an initiation and that she had killed them. She survived the ritual and was sent home on a one-way trip, determined to make amends, starting with her son Akito.
