Pvt. Karri Lee: The Refugee Marine
Private Karri Lee was an Australian refugee and field technician in the Colonial Marines and one of the viewpoint characters of Aliens: Bishop. She enlisted to win citizenship for her mother and three younger brothers, and joined the company of Captain Marcel Apone only weeks before it hunted for the missing android Bishop. On the Patna she panicked in zero gravity, then recovered the data that led the Marines to the Chinese warship Xinjiang. There she saved Bishop from twin killer synthetics, fought through a Xenomorph outbreak, and dragged a wounded comrade to the escape pods.
Biography
Childhood In Australia
Karri Lee grew up in Australia during the occupation by the Three World Empire, which strip-mined the country while its people went hungry. Her father had taught English Literature at a university until the authorities closed it for harboring subversives. He then taught literacy and an honest version of history at a community center, where neighbors called him Professor Lee. Karri struggled with every school subject except reading, and she read by candlelight through the rolling blackouts. When she was not scrounging for food, she trained in a taekwondo dojang, building the fighting skill that later defined her. She and her father shared little except a fierce love of coffee.
On 5 January 2175, when Karri was sixteen, she walked with her father to a ration center in Cabramatta and found the crowd told there was no food. Riot police beat the protesters, fired tear gas, and finally opened fire as thousands fought back. Karri struck down an officer who was beating her father with a baton, then dragged him through the alleys after a bullet hit him. A brick fragment cut her forehead, leaving the scar she carried for life. Her father died in an abandoned house after making her promise to fight for her mother and brothers. She took his wedding ring and wore it from then on.
The day became known as the Bloody Fifth. After her father's death, her mother withdrew into grief and often forgot to look after the boys, so Karri fed the family herself. They ended up in a refugee camp, living in a converted shipping container, and later moved to a better camp in California. The Colonial Marines kept a recruiting office inside the camps, offering citizenship in return for service. Karri signed up knowing that one year of adequate service would earn her full United Americas citizenship and move her family to Camp Pendleton, and that a good decoration would speed it up.
Training And The Hardboiled
Karri trained aboard the Mont-Blanc, with thirteen weeks on the ground and thirteen in space. She excelled at hand-to-hand combat but failed her zero-gravity qualification, a weakness that followed her into service. Major Menadue was known to prey on recruits, so Karri recorded him and used the recording to force a pass from him. She also told him to stop his abuse. Her file showed passing grades, hints of service with Australian rebels, and repeated fights with other recruits. When the Il Conde stopped at Helene 215, Captain Apone was offered five rookies and chose Karri after looking her in the eye.
She joined the Hardboiled 8th company as a field technician, responsible for bypassing doors and control panels. Her fireteam partner was Corporal Sara Ransome, a tall and capable Marine to whom Karri felt drawn. The smart-gunner Juan Cortazar mocked her from the start and nicknamed her Cornbread after she loaded her plate at a meal. When he went too far in the mess hall, Karri pinned a tray of cornbread against his throat. Apone ended the brawl with a speech about the company as a tribe, and Karri gave him the answer he wanted, though she privately served only her family.
Ambush On The Patna
The company boarded the Patna, a Weyland-Yutani ship believed to hold Bishop. Company commandos in white armor ambushed the Marines in the hangar, and the artificial gravity failed in the middle of the firefight. Karri froze in zero gravity and her vital signs spiked into pure panic. Ransome came back for her and took a bullet near the collarbone. Karri lost her rifle and helmet, escaped a noose pole that dragged her off the deck, and killed a commando with her knife. The synthetic Haruki took over the care of Ransome while Karri went on alone.
Bloodied and carrying little more than her field technician kit, Karri reached a sub-command center and restored the ship's gravity, passing a laboratory full of Facehugger specimen tubes on the way. Apone took her along as his technician when the Marines pushed on toward the executive suites. The group included Cortazar, his shield-bearer Private Lance Johnson, the company representative Walter Schwartz, and a captured commando named Raby. Raby gave them the door code, and the Marines entered a luxurious office where a man they believed to be Michael Bishop was waiting behind his desk.
The man was a reprogrammed synthetic. It stabbed Johnson in the throat, killed the bound prisoner Raby, and pinned Apone against a wall while stabbing at him. Karri had no clear shot at its body, so she fired three rounds from her pistol into its knee and calf. The machine threw Apone into her, slamming her against the wall, and advanced on her before Schwartz shot it repeatedly in the head. Karri watched Cortazar weep over Johnson and wondered whether rescuing an android was worth such losses. A second prisoner, Macrae, then revealed that the Patna had met another ship weeks earlier.
The Telemetry
The other vessel had been hidden by displacement plating. Walter Schwartz gave the ship's computer design specifications for that plating so it could recalculate its scans and project where the vessel had gone. The projection needed several minutes, but the reactor was overloading. Apone let Karri stay at the console as long as she left with three minutes to spare, and Haruki later urged her to go. She refused, because without the telemetry the hunt for Bishop would end and her hopes for her brothers with it. Haruki went to engineering to eject the core by hand and was lost there, after asking her to pass his condolences for Johnson to Cortazar.
Karri escaped with the telemetry disc and handed it to Apone, who praised her work. She told him she had left at the three-minute mark as ordered, a lie that weighed on her. The other Marines shunned her afterwards, and Cortazar glared at her in the corridors. When Ransome woke in the infirmary, Karri visited her and confessed about her brothers, the camp, and her hope for a decoration. Ransome told her that not everything was an angle and asked how she had come to the Marines. Karri told her the story of the Bloody Fifth, and Ransome took her hand and called her a sister.
The Xinjiang Briefing
The telemetry pointed the Il Conde to the Bao Sau sector, where the Marines learned that Bishop was held aboard the Chinese warship Xinjiang. At the briefing Cortazar refused to board for the sake of an android. Karri stood up and delivered Haruki's last message, explaining that Johnson had once taught the synthetic to bluff at poker while they waited two days after a skiff crash on Devil's Peak. Ransome, now on crutches, backed her up. Karri was assigned to the second team with Cortazar, Corporal Colby, and Sergeant Max Hettrick, carried in by the pilot Tyrone Miller.
Aboard The Xinjiang
The Orthus Twins
Her team entered the Xinjiang through a hangar cleared by Miller, with Karri carrying the motion tracker. They found dead Chinese soldiers and acid holes from a loose Xenomorph. In a luxury suite Karri found a body that looked like Bishop, taller and broader than the model she knew. Twin blond synthetics known as Orthus burst in with shock sticks and daggers, moving in perfect unison. They downed Colby and Cortazar, and Karri wounded one of them before she was knocked down. Bishop woke and fought both twins with a katana while the Marines lay stunned.
Karri came round in time to shoot the head off Orthus One as it choked Bishop, ending the fight. Bishop thanked her for his life, and she thanked him for hers. When he confessed that a pain in his chest and a tremor in his hands made him think he was malfunctioning, she told him every Marine carried that feeling and welcomed him to the club. They freed another prisoner, the convict Robert Morse of Fiorina 161, and Karri radioed Miller that they had the package and would be out in ten minutes.
On the way out Bishop caught the scent of Michael Bishop and insisted on going after him. Karri reminded him of his promise to stand with the Marines and told him that many good Marines had died for him. She knew Apone would be furious if they found Bishop and then let him walk away, but she could not stop him. She gave him ten minutes to reach the right rear hangar and gripped his dog tags in her fist before letting him go. The Marines kept Morse instead, and Karri stopped him from taking a dead soldier's gun.
The Medic And The Xenomorph
As the team moved on, a young Vietnamese woman ran toward them with a Xenomorph behind her. Karri killed the creature with sustained fire from her pulse rifle, while Cortazar shielded the woman and took a spray of acid across his body. Sergeant Hettrick fled, and Colby was taken. The woman was Xuan Nguyen, a ship medic who spoke through a translator and treated Cortazar's burns. When Morse balked at carrying the wounded gunner, Karri pressed her rifle to his chest and forced him to do it.
While the group rested in an outer corridor, Xuan explained that her crew had been smugglers taking weapons to Linna 349, a world that Australian revolutionaries had set on fire. Karri feared that Cortazar would turn on the girl, and old memories of the occupation surged through her. Instead he told Xuan to keep that secret if they got out, and Karri agreed that she should claim to be a simple cargo medic. The moment left her grieving for Australia and her helplessness to change its fate. When gunfire broke out behind them, she sent Morse on with Cortazar and Xuan toward the escape pods.
Truce With Su Wong
Karri then met Commander Su Wong and her surviving soldiers, who blamed the Americans for the disaster. Wong pointed a gun at her, but Karri calmly answered through a translator that Wong's own people had brought the Xenomorphs down on themselves by experimenting on a Vietnamese crew. She proposed a truce until they reached the pods, warning that otherwise her ship would destroy them once they launched. Wong agreed and asked Karri to cover the withdrawal beside her. The two women traded surnames and backed down the corridor together, rifles raised, while the Chinese survivors boarded.
The Escape Pods
At the pods a Xenomorph struck as Cortazar rejoined Karri, shirtless and burned. Karri shot the leaping creature in the head and threw herself against him, and its dying acid breached the hull while its tail broke his leg. Cortazar told her to leave him, but she grabbed him by the hair and ordered him to his feet. With his arm across her shoulders they hobbled toward the pods, turning to fire at the shadows closing in while Wong covered them. Karri emptied her rifle, then her pistol, then fired another rifle until the creatures fell back.
When that rifle finally read zero, Karri drew a grenade and apologized in her mind to her father for not being strong enough. Bishop appeared beside her, lifted Cortazar with ease, and told her to follow. She threw the grenade and ran. A Xenomorph seized Wong from behind as Karri reached the pods, and a claw caught Karri's side at the hatch. Bishop drove his katana through the creature's throat and pulled her inside before launching the pod. Karri teased him for cutting it so close, then let herself rest with her hand on his knee and his hand over hers.
Decorations And Family
Back aboard the Il Conde, Apone confronted Karri with her vital signs from the Patna and wrote a letter of reprimand for her panic. He ordered her to work on her zero-gravity training in her own time. He then recommended her for the Purple Heart for the wound she took leaving the Xinjiang and, based on the reports of Bishop and Cortazar, for the Silver Star for rescuing Cortazar. He had also requested that her family be moved to a residence at Camp Pendleton. Karri broke down in tears, then straightened and declared herself a Marine.
At breakfast in the mess hall, Karri shared her Vegemite with Xuan and greeted her with red eyes and a rare smile. She whispered something to the newly promoted Sergeant Ransome, who touched her forehead to Karri's. Cortazar, now in a wheelchair with a drip in his arm, dumped a plate of cornbread in front of her to the laughter of the pilots. Karri swore at him and threw a hunk of it back. For the first time since joining the company, she had a place among the Marines.
Personality And Traits
Karri was hard, wary, and driven almost entirely by her promise to protect her family. She treated most situations as a calculation and assumed that everyone had an angle, which Ransome noticed and gently challenged. She carried deep anger at the occupiers of Australia and at the British commandos whose countrymen had helped crush the uprising. Under pressure she could freeze, as she did in zero gravity on the Patna, but she always recovered and kept fighting. She often twisted her father's ring on her index finger when old memories rose, and she kept her grief well hidden.
Her courage showed most clearly when she refused to leave others behind, from the Patna console to the wounded Cortazar in the Xinjiang corridor. She spoke bluntly in Australian slang and showed little respect for rank, Company men, or prisoners like Morse. She also had a dry sense of humor that broke tension at the worst moments. Although she distrusted synthetics at first, she came to accept Haruki's last wish and later took comfort from Bishop. By the end she no longer served only for her family but for the Marines of the Hardboiled company as well.
Skills And Equipment
Karri's best weapon was her body. About fifteen years of taekwondo made her the strongest hand-to-hand fighter among the recruits, and she killed and disabled commandos with kicks and a knife. As a field technician she bypassed doors and panels and worked ship computers on the Patna, which let her extract the telemetry from the Patna. She carried a pulse rifle and a service pistol, a field technician's kit at her belt, a grenade, and a translator. On the Xinjiang she also carried the team's motion tracker. Her lasting weakness was zero gravity, which she had failed in training on the Mont-Blanc.
Relationships
Sara Ransome
Corporal Sara Ransome was Karri's fireteam partner and the first person in the company to treat her with warmth. Karri was attracted to her and felt sick with worry after Ransome was shot saving her on the Patna. In the infirmary Ransome drew out Karri's story, told her not everything was an angle, and called her a sister. Ransome later backed her at the Xinjiang briefing and told Apone that she liked Karri and considered her a good Marine. By the end of the story Ransome had been promoted to sergeant, and the two women shared a quiet moment at breakfast, foreheads touching.
Juan Cortazar
Private First Class Juan Cortazar began as Karri's chief tormentor. He bullied her, nicknamed her Cornbread, and fought her in the mess hall, then blamed her and Haruki after Johnson died. Karri's delivery of Haruki's message about Johnson began to change his attitude, and on the Xinjiang they learned to trust each other. He shielded Xuan from acid, and Karri refused to leave him behind when his leg broke at the pods. Her rescue of him earned her the Silver Star recommendation, and by the end he teased her with cornbread as a friend rather than an enemy.
Marcel Apone
Captain Marcel Apone chose Karri from five rookies on gut instinct and never fully explained what he saw in her. He tested her loyalty in the mess hall, took her along as his technician on the Patna after the ambush, and praised her for the telemetry without knowing she had lied about leaving on time. Apone was strict, reprimanding her for panic in zero gravity, but generous in recognizing courage. His recommendations for the Purple Heart and Silver Star secured her family's future, and he told her he was glad to have her in his company.
Bishop
Karri first saw Bishop as a machine that was not worth the lives of human Marines. On the Xinjiang that view changed after she saved him from the Orthus twins and he fought to protect the Marines. She treated his confession of a strange pain with understanding and welcomed him to the club, yet she was angry when he left to hunt Michael Bishop. He returned in time to carry Cortazar and to kill the Xenomorph that held her at the pod door. In the pod she rested her hand on his leg, and Bishop placed his hand over hers, a moment she allowed herself to accept.
Behind The Scenes
Karri Lee was created by T. R. Napper for Aliens: Bishop, published by Titan Books on 5 December 2023. She was one of several new viewpoint characters, alongside Marcel Apone, Xuan Nguyen, and Su Wong, around the returning Bishop. Her chapters are headed Private Karri Lee and carry much of the novel's Marine action, from the Patna ambush to the escape from the Xinjiang. Her background ties the book to wider politics of occupation, refugees, and citizenship earned through military service.
Napper used Karri to give the novel a view of the Colonial Marines from the lowest rank, in contrast to the command view of Marcel Apone and the synthetic view of Bishop. Characters usually call her Karri in her own chapters and Lee or Private Lee in the chapters of other viewpoint characters. The book never states her exact age, though she was sixteen at the riots of 2175, which places her at around twenty during the story. Her chapters also introduce the Australian uprising against the Three World Empire, a conflict that shapes her anger, her loyalties, and her reaction to Xuan's smuggling.
Conclusion
Karri Lee began Aliens: Bishop as a frightened rookie who joined the Colonial Marines only to save her family and expected nothing from anyone else. She panicked, lied, and stood apart from her company, yet she also stayed behind for the telemetry, saved Bishop from the Orthus twins, and refused to leave Cortazar to die. By the time her family was promised a home at Camp Pendleton, she had found a second family in the Hardboiled 8th. Her story is one of the clearest pictures of why ordinary people joined the Marines and why they stayed.
