Empress Xenomorph: The Planet-Ruling Queen of Queens

The Empress Xenomorph was one of the rarest and most powerful types of Xenomorph in the expanded Alien universe. Also known as a Queen of Queens, the Empress stood above ordinary Alien Queens but below the Xenomorph Queen Mother in the hive hierarchy. Instead of ruling a single colony, an Empress could dominate multiple Queens and several connected hives. She represented a later stage of Xenomorph monarch evolution, growing larger, stronger, and more dominant as her hive expanded. Here is a full overview of the Empress Xenomorph, including her biology, creation, role in the hive, and War Empress variant.

The Empress Xenomorph

The Empress Xenomorph as a Queen of Queens

The Empress first appeared in expanded Alien media, including Aliens versus Predator 2 and Aliens versus Predator: Extinction. She was described as an evolved form of a Queen and one of the highest Xenomorph monarch castes, beside the Matriarch. While ordinary Queens controlled individual hives, an Empress ruled over lesser Queens and their colonies. This made her one of the most important reproductive and command organisms in the species. Although the Empress never appeared in the Alien films, she became one of the most powerful Xenomorph variants in game and roleplaying lore.

Empress Xenomorph Biology

The Empress resembled a larger and more developed version of a standard Queen. She possessed four arms, a long bladed tail, a reinforced biomechanical exoskeleton, and a massive ovipositor for laying eggs. Her most distinctive feature was her double-layered crest, which included a glossy upper layer and a wider, duller lower layer beneath it. Her smaller secondary arms were usually more developed than those of ordinary Queens. Some descriptions placed Empresses at Tyrannosaurus rex proportions, with certain individuals reaching roughly 20 feet tall and 40 feet long. This made the Empress one of the largest known Xenomorph ranks.

The Empress' Role in the Hive

The Empress served as the supreme authority over multiple Queens. A normal Queen ruled a single hive, but an Empress could dominate several Queens and the colonies attached to them. This allowed the species to expand faster because multiple egg-laying monarchs could operate under one higher ruler. Lesser Queens that would normally fight each other could instead become subordinate to the Empress. In this role, the Empress acted as the central ruler of a larger hive network rather than a single nest. Her death could destabilize several colonies at once. Unlike the rare Xenomorph King, which was typically portrayed as a hybridized monarch, the Empress functioned as a natural extension of the traditional Xenomorph hive structure.

How an Empress Was Created

Expanded Alien lore suggested that an ordinary Queen could become an Empress as her hive continued growing. As the hive expanded, the Queen grew larger, tougher, and more dominant. If the colony absorbed other hives or allowed multiple Queens to exist, one monarch could rise above the others and become the Empress. The Empress then ruled the lesser Queens instead of destroying them. This made the Empress an intermediary stage between a standard Queen and a Queen Mother. In some interpretations, a sufficiently old and powerful Empress could eventually evolve even further into a Queen Mother.

The Empress Of LV-1201

One of the best-known Empresses was the individual from LV-1201 in the video game Aliens vs. Predator 2. She ruled the ancient Zeta Hive, a massive colony believed to have existed for at least 500 years before human settlers arrived on the planet during the 2220s. In 2231, Weyland-Yutani scientist Dr. Eisenberg led Operation Savior deep into the hive and successfully captured the Empress after threatening her with a flamethrower and stunning her during the assault. The creature was loaded onto a transport truck while hordes of Xenomorphs relentlessly pursued the extraction team through the hive complex. Eisenberg attempted to evacuate the Empress aboard a stolen Cheyenne dropship from the USS Verloc, but a Warrior Xenomorph disabled the landing bay hydraulics, causing the dropship to crash before takeoff. The Warrior then freed the Empress and dragged Eisenberg back into the hive, allowing the gigantic monarch to reclaim control of the Zeta Hive once again.

Empresses and the Queen Mother

The Red Queen Mother from Aliens Genocide

The Empress ranked below the Queen Mother. While an Empress ruled several Queens and hives, the Queen Mother represented the supreme monarch of the species. The Queen Mother possessed far greater psychic influence and could control Xenomorphs across enormous distances. However, the Empress still remained far above a standard Queen. She functioned as the bridge between a single-hive ruler and the species-level authority of the Queen Mother. In Aliens: Genocide two distinct Alien Queens battled for the dominance of Xenomorph Prime, a Black Queen and a Red Queen. These queens can be considered to be Empresses as well.

Conclusion

The Empress Xenomorph represented one of the highest levels of Alien hive evolution. Larger and tougher than ordinary Queens, she ruled multiple colonies and dominated lesser monarchs beneath her. Her double-layered crest, immense body, and ability to control several hives made her one of the most powerful Xenomorph variants in expanded Alien lore. Although she has not appeared in the Alien films, the Empress remains to be one of the most powerful Xenomorph monarchs ever described.
