Appearance
Amengi were large insectoid beings with thick necks, armored carapaces, and oversized yellow eyes. Their heads were elongated and hard-shelled, close enough to a skull trophy that later Yautja would wear Amengi faces as helmets. Compared with the lean, mandibled hunters they enslaved, the Amengi looked alien in a different register: less jungle predator, more armored conqueror. That insectoid silhouette also matches the discarded first Predator suit design from 1987, which Expanded lore later folded back into the Amengi story.
Conquest Of Yautja Prime
After exhausting their own homeworld, the Amengi conquered other planets and eventually took Yautja Prime. The Hish of that era were still a tribal warrior people without the starships and plasma tech later hunters take for granted. Under Amengi occupation they worked as laborers and fought as prizefighters for insectoid entertainment. The rule lasted for centuries and left the Predator race devastated, trapped on their own world under a species that treated them as tools.
Kaail's Rebellion
The Amengi grew soft on luxury while the Hish grew harder under the whip. Among those captives rose Kaail, a pale-skinned albino warrior later remembered as the Alpha Predator and the first true Yautja. He led a rebellion that smashed Amengi control on Yautja Prime. Many Amengi were killed. Survivors were enslaved in turn. The Hish took Amengi ships and weapons, renamed themselves Yautja, and left their homeworld ready to hunt across the stars.

Kaail celebrated victory by wearing the enemy. An Amengi head became his helmet. Amengi bones covered his torso, arms, and legs. That look fixed Amengi biology into Yautja myth: later hunters still chase skulls and bone trophies, and some armor styles echo the Amengi purge. On Yautja Prime, statues and clan memory kept the insectoid oppressors visible long after their empire fell.
NECA And Hunting Grounds
The Amengi surface mainly through Kaail's NECA figure and the matching Predator: Hunting Grounds class. The figure leans into Amengi trophies: oversized insectoid mask, bone weapons, and armor built from conquered remains. Hunting Grounds kept the Alpha's Amengi-facing look while adding game-ready tech so the class could fight other Predators and fireteams on even terms. The Amengi remain the silent half of that design: their heads and bones on the hunter who beat them.
The Van Damme Suit
Before Stan Winston's hunter, Predator tested a bulky insectoid costume on Jean-Claude Van Damme. Van Damme was not happy in the part. The suit was uncomfortable, and he wanted a more active role than standing inside a heavy insectoid shell. Director John McTiernan also rejected the design as unintimidating, and Van Damme left soon after. The redesign that followed created the mandibled Jungle Hunter. Years later, NECA and Hunting Grounds lore reused that insectoid look as Amengi biology worn by Kaail, closing the loop between a discarded movie suit and a species that once owned the Predators.
