Xenoborg: The Star-Trek-Like Xenomorph Super-Soldier
The Xenoborg was one of the strangest Xenomorph types in the Alien and Predator expanded universe. It was a cybernetically enhanced Alien created as a living weapon, combining the durability and savagery of a Xenomorph with mechanical armor, targeting systems, and heavy weapons. The Xenoborg appeared most memorably as a rare but dangerous enemy in Aliens versus Predator 1999, where it served as a slow, heavily armed experimental defense unit. Here is a full overview of the Xenoborg, including its design, weapons, weaknesses, history aboard the Odobenus space station, and other appearances.
The Xenoborg
The Xenoborg was a fusion of organic Xenomorph tissue and cybernetic technology. Unlike a normal Drone Xenomorph or Warrior Xenomorph, it was not meant to act as a stealthy hive predator. It functioned more like a walking weapons platform, with mechanical components fixed onto its body and a laser targeting system built into its head. The result was an experimental super-soldier that could kill enemies quickly once fully activated. However, the added machinery also made the creature slower and less graceful than a natural Alien. With its cybernetic implants, slow mechanical movement, and laser-heavy combat role, the Xenoborg looked almost like a Xenomorph version of the Borg from Star Trek.

Xenoborg Biology And Cybernetics
Xenoborgs were not pure androids like android Xenomorphs such as Norbert or Jeri. They were still partly living Xenomorphs, but their bodies were reinforced and controlled through mechanical systems. The standard game version retained the recognizable Alien shape, including a long tail, dark biomechanical body, and predatory stance. The difference was the large quantity of metal, targeting hardware, and weapon mounts added to the creature. This made the Xenoborg resistant to ordinary small-arms fire and forced opponents to rely on heavy weapons or direct dismemberment.
Weapons And Combat Role
The Xenoborg's main strength was its built-in laser weaponry. In Aliens versus Predator, the creature used powerful laser cannons and a visible laser targeting system to lock onto enemies. This made it closer to an automated sentry than a normal Xenomorph hunter. Once active, it could kill a Marine or Predator very quickly if they stayed in its line of fire. The Xenoborg was especially dangerous in enclosed corridors, where its slow movement mattered less and its lasers could cover a narrow approach.
Weaknesses
The Xenoborg's biggest weakness was the same cybernetic bulk that made it so durable. Normal Xenomorphs were fast, agile, and able to attack from walls, ceilings, and vents. Xenoborgs were much slower because their bodies were weighed down by heavy metals and mounted hardware. They also needed a start-up period before they became fully combat-ready, giving prepared enemies a chance to react. In battle, they were best handled with explosives, heavy Colonial Marine weapons such as the M83 SADAR, or powerful Yautja weapons such as Yautja speargun.
Xenoborg Deployments
The best-known Xenoborgs were developed aboard the USS Odobenus space station above LV-426 around 2189. Weyland-Yutani activated at least three prototype units during a Xenomorph outbreak aboard the station, using them as automated defense weapons. Their programming caused them to attack anything in sight, making them dangerous to survivors as well as intruders. Similar Xenoborgs later guarded a Colonial Marine controlled Xenomorph habitat facility until a Predator raid destroyed them while hunting the Xenomorph Queen. These appearances established the Xenoborg as a slow but deadly security weapon rather than a normal roaming Xenomorph.
Other Robotic Xenomorphs
The Xenoborg was not the only attempt to create a robotic or cybernetic Xenomorph. Several similar experiments appeared throughout the Alien expanded universe. One of the most famous was Norbert from Aliens: Harvest, an intelligent android Xenomorph created by Dr. Stan Mayakovsky. Unlike the heavily armed Xenoborg, Norbert was capable of speech, independent thought, and even friendship with humans. Other robotic or synthetic Alien variants included Jeri from Aliens: Stronghold, the heavily armored TecSeks from Aliens vs. Predator: Deadliest of the Species, and the cybernetic Xenomorphs from Hunter's Planet. Together, these creations showed humanity's repeated attempts to control or imitate the Alien species through robotics, cybernetics, and synthetic engineering.
Conclusion
The Xenoborg was a flawed but memorable attempt to turn the Xenomorph into a controlled super-soldier. It kept the Alien's organic menace, but added targeting systems, heavy armor, and powerful weapons. The result was not a perfect predator, since the mechanical additions made it slow and dependent on activation time. Still, once online, the Xenoborg was one of the most dangerous experimental weapons in the early Aliens versus Predator games. Its later relatives in Hunter's Planet showed the same lesson on a larger scale: Xenomorphs could be modified, armored, and briefly controlled, but they were never truly safe weapons for humans to command.
