Rory Declan McKenna was the twelve-year-old son of Army Ranger Quinn McKenna in The Predator, played by Jacob Tremblay. He lived in Georgia with his mother, Emily McKenna, after his parents separated, and he was on the autism spectrum. When a mailed bio-mask and wrist gauntlet arrived at the house, Rory opened them, learned the alien symbols, and wore the gear on Halloween. The larger Upgrade Predator tried to take him because that mind was the trait the hunters wanted, and Quinn, evolutionary biologist Casey Brackett, and the military patients called the Loonies fought to get him back.
Biography
Early Life
In the novelization, Rory was twelve and lived with Emily in a Georgia house where she painted, while Quinn was usually away on Army assignments after their separation. He attended Lawrence A. Gordon Middle School, where a temporary sign advertised a Halloween Haunt for parents and students. At lunch he walked the science lab during Chess Club, watched five games at once, and held winning lines for both sides of every board even though the other players almost never asked him to join. Teachers sometimes looked at him as if he were a puzzle missing a piece, while Rory felt complete and simply different from the neurotypical classmates around him.
Doctors had placed him on the autism spectrum, though people around him still used the older Asperger's label. Emily once told him that neurotypical people were like cavemen and that children like him were the future of humanity, an idea he liked even knowing a teacher would not. Bullies Derek and E.J. pulled a fire alarm, knowing loud noise hit him harder than other children, and while Mr. Moore led the Chess Club into the corridor they found him curled under a lab table with his hands over his ears, kicked him while calling him an "Ass Burger," and tipped every chess set. When the alarm stopped, Rory put every piece back on every board exactly as it had been, because restoring order calmed him.
In the novelization he remembered a baseball game where his first hit ended in laughter after his oversized helmet fell and he stopped to pick it up instead of running the bases, because he had been told the helmet must stay on. Quinn elbowed a father who mocked him from the stands. When Emily left a note on the fridge and the house was empty, Rory spent hours in the basement among recycled parts and unfinished projects, and he saw a therapist named Michael Rosenn for help with social cues.
The Package From Mexico
Unpaid fees on Quinn's post office box dumped a consulate parcel from Mexico onto the foyer floor while Emily was out. A postal worker asked whether Quinn lived there, and Rory answered with his father's military occupational specialty, MOS 11B3VW3, then explained that his father killed people so the mailman could deliver the mail. Inside the box were the bio-mask and wrist gauntlet Quinn had taken from the crashed Fugitive Predator. Rory carried them to the basement. The helmet did not fit his head, and he treated the glowing symbols on the gauntlet remote as a puzzle rather than gear he was forbidden to touch.
A small trapezoid remote slid out of the gauntlet, and Rory copied its red glyphs onto a school folder while he worked out the command sequence. When he reversed a sequence, holograms of a spacecraft and star maps poured from the helmet, narrowing from Earth to a damaged ship in Mexico. That sync later put his school tag, Rory Declan McKenna, Grade 6, Gordon Middle School, onto the Fugitive's recovered mask at Project Stargazer, which is why the hunter tracked the McKenna house. Emily brought home pirate and Frankenstein Halloween costumes, and Rory refused both.
Halloween Night
On Halloween, Rory went trick-or-treating in the Fugitive's helmet and gauntlet from the basement rather than either costume Emily had bought and he had refused. Heat signatures filled the eyepieces as he walked the neighborhood, and for a short stretch the bullies who usually hunted him left him alone because they could not see his face. A man on a porch threw a rotten apple at the mask, the helmet treated the impact as an attack, and a side cannon burned the doorway and the thrower. Rory dumped the helmet in the bushes and ran for the school field, which is where Quinn caught up with him after the Loonies reached town.
Quinn reached Emily's house with Casey and the Loonies and learned that Rory had gone out in the alien helmet. Police radio traffic placed a boy with a metal cast moving east on Woodruff, and Quinn caught up with his son near the school field as two alien animals closed in. Rory's first word when he saw his father was simply Dad, and for a moment the Halloween chaos narrowed to that reunion before the hunt resumed.
The Hounds
Two Predator hounds reached the field ahead of the Fugitive. Casey picked Rory up and carried him while Quinn and the Loonies fired, and Nebraska Williams shot one hound in the head hard enough to leave it brain-damaged and oddly loyal afterward. Casey took a tissue sample and guessed that the hunters' dreadlocks worked like sensory receptors. Rory stayed close to his father while the group argued over whether to keep running or return the stolen gear.
At Gordon Middle School
The Fugitive was waiting on the roof of the Loonies' recreational vehicle, and the Upgrade was close behind it. Rory ran into Gordon Middle School, and the jungle hunter followed, scanned Quinn, and went for a black remote that had fallen from the boy's hand, the device the Upgrade later called the Kujhad. Quinn grabbed Rory and ran. The Upgrade killed the Fugitive in the street outside the school before they got clear of the building.
In the novelization, Quinn saw the Fugitive hanging in the lobby with a metal noose around its neck and its feet off the floor, until the Upgrade yanked the cord through the neck and the head hit the tiles, then came for the boy. In a quiet stretch after the school fight, Rory told Quinn he was sorry he had never grown up the way his father wanted, and Quinn answered that he had never grown up the way he wanted either. When Rory asked whether they were going to be killed, Quinn told him no and kept him moving.
Traeger And The Crash Site
Inside the Loonies' motor home, Casey argued that the hunters were upgrading themselves with DNA taken from the strongest species they met, and that Rory's autism, which let him read alien tools, might be the next step in human evolution rather than a disorder. A helicopter took Quinn, Casey, Nebraska, and Rory from a field after the school. CIA agent Will Traeger wanted the remote, beat Quinn in a pen by a barn for leverage, and left Rory with a cryptographer while he pressed for the crashed ship's location. Rory drew a map to that wreck from what the gauntlet had shown him. Traeger took the boy to the crash site with a translator unit, calling the device the fruit of a long government effort to understand hunter speech since 1987.
At the wreck Traeger pushed Rory to open systems the adults could not read, while Quinn and the Loonies fought their way in to take him back. Rory recognized his father's diversion for what it was and said out loud that Dad was coming to save him. When Traeger claimed Quinn would walk into sensors like a fool, Rory understood the reverse, that the tripwires were bait. After the rescue he warned Quinn that Traeger was lying about letting them leave with the ship.
Kidnapped By The Upgrade
Through the translator the Upgrade announced that it had come to destroy the vessel, named McKenna its prize, and offered the humans a time advantage. In the novelization Quinn heard that naming while he was inside the crashed pod, before a five-minute head start. The survivors fled into the Georgia woods together while Lynch's explosives, gunfire, and the brain-damaged hound failed to stop the hybrid hunter. Baxley, Coyle, Lynch, Nettles, and later Nebraska died during that chase, and Traeger killed himself with a stolen shoulder cannon. Quinn stepped in front of the Upgrade and offered himself in Rory's place. The hunter threw him aside and carried Rory off, because the prize had never been the father.
Casey said aloud what the hunt had proven: the Upgrade wanted McKenna as the next step in the evolutionary chain, meaning the son, not the Ranger. Rory's autism was the trait the hunters valued, the same reading of the spectrum Casey had offered in the motor home when she linked his grasp of alien technology to human evolution. Inside the rising ship Rory tracked its systems while Quinn, Nebraska, and Nettles climbed the hull outside. The kidnapping was not random harvest. It was a deliberate grab for a mind the Upgrade treated as genetic material worth taking off-world.
Rescue And The Woods
From inside the craft Rory shouted that a force field was coming online, warning Quinn and Nebraska before the shield killed Nettles and before Nebraska fell into a turbine that brought the ship down. In the novelization Rory slid off the rising shield and lived, and Quinn shot the consoles until the craft skipped across the water and threw the Upgrade out.
After the crash Rory worked the systems he could read while Quinn fought the Upgrade on the ground and Casey attacked from above with the Fugitive's gauntlet. Rory triggered the ship's shield again and cut the Upgrade's forearm off against the hull, a wound that left the hunter's weapons in human hands. In the film Quinn finished the fight with a charge from that severed arm and pistol shots to the head. In the novelization Casey wore the first hunter's gauntlet, the bolt-skulled hound brought back a bomb cuff, and Quinn loaded that charge onto a projectile from the severed arm before two pistol rounds through the left eye finished the Upgrade. Rory walked out of the water with his father and Casey.
At dawn the three survivors buried small objects that had belonged to each of the dead Loonies, including Nettles's foil unicorn, so the men who had fought for Rory would not be forgotten only by the people who had stood with him. Quinn told his son those were the ones no one else would remember. Rory had gone from a basement puzzle to the center of a hunter war in a single Halloween night, and he left the woods alive because he could operate the same technology that had marked him as prey.
Aftermath And The Predator Killer
Later, Quinn and Rory stood in a government lab while technicians opened cargo recovered from the Fugitive's ship. A pod that had jettisoned before the Upgrade destroyed the vessel held a fail-safe gift the first hunter had meant for humankind. Rory read a message from the pod through a nearby bio-mask and said the device would be called the Predator Killer. When the suit locked onto a lab worker's hand and built itself around the man, Quinn said he would be the one to operate it, with Rory watching beside him.
Rory received a desk in that facility afterward and helped adults who could not parse hunter language as quickly as he could. Casey was not with them for the pod opening. In later lore recordings, Sean Keyes described how Stargazer tried to turn itself around with that same recovered technology, and how the rebuilt OWLF later found the Predator Killer gauntlet in deep storage. For Rory the lab was the place where the Halloween nightmare became ongoing work with the same symbols he had first copied onto a school folder.
Personality And Traits
Rory was smart and needed order. He could hold several chess games in his head, recite Quinn's military codes from memory, and learn an alien interface in one night. When bullies knocked the chess boards over at school, he put every piece back. Loud noise overwhelmed him, and he got on better with clear systems than with social cues he could not read.
He was close to Emily and missed Quinn when the Ranger was away. Quinn never treated Rory's autism as something to hide, and when the Upgrade came for the boy he offered himself instead. Casey saw Rory's grasp of hunter tech as evolution rather than damage, and the Upgrade made the same call when it chose him over the armed adults in the woods. Rory was scared during the hunt, but he kept giving useful facts about force fields, Traeger's lies, and the Predator Killer.
Behind The Scenes
Jacob Tremblay played Rory McKenna in The Predator, directed by Shane Black from a script Black wrote with Fred Dekker and released by 20th Century Fox in September 2018. Tremblay was a child actor with prior lead roles, and the part made Rory one of the first children to stand at the center of a Predator film rather than at the edge of a hunt. The novelization by Christopher Golden and Mark Morris, published by Titan Books, expands his school day, the baseball memory, the basement decode, and Emily's household in ways the film only sketches.
Production notes and later coverage mentioned that Tremblay kept a prop box cutter from the shoot as a memento. Casting placed him opposite Boyd Holbrook as Quinn and Yvonne Strahovski as Emily, with Olivia Munn as Casey Brackett. The finished film keeps Rory's autism and his value to the Upgrade as open dialogue, including Casey's line that the hunter wanted the son as the next step in the evolutionary chain.

Conclusion
Rory McKenna was the autistic middle-schooler who opened a hunter's mailed mask and gauntlet, wore them on Halloween, and became the Upgrade Predator's chosen prize because that mind was the trait the hunters wanted. He survived the hounds, Traeger's farm, and the crash-site woods with Quinn, Casey, and the Loonies, then helped cut the Upgrade down with the ship's own shield. Afterward he stood with his father when the Predator Killer suit woke in a Stargazer lab and kept working with the same alien language that had first pulled the hunt to his door.
