Detective Leona Cantrell was an LAPD Metro officer in Predator 2, played by María Conchita Alonso. During the 1997 Los Angeles heat wave she worked the Alvarado squad under Lieutenant Mike Harrigan, took Jerry Lambert as partner, and rode the Metro into a massacre by the City Hunter. The hunter killed Jerry and the armed riders, then scanned Leona, found a second life in her abdomen, and released her under a rule against hunting the unborn. Paramedics carried her out in deep shock with fetal heart tones on the scanner, one of the few humans to meet that Yautja and live.
Biography
Before Predator 2
Leona Cantrell came up as a rookie in Los Angeles and stayed on Metro when other cops asked for safer desks. In Simon Hawke's Predator 2 novelization she was twenty-eight the summer of the hunt, married to Rick Cantrell, who owned a motorcycle dealership. They had met when she pulled him over on his Harley for speeding, wrote the ticket, and took his number anyway. By the heat-wave weeks she was already feeling sick on and off and blaming the weather, without knowing she was pregnant with their first child.
At the Alvarado Precinct she worked filing cabinets and case jackets as hard as she worked the street, a detective who kept her sidearm ready and her temper shorter than her patience for hot dogs. The squad treated her as one of Harrigan's own, not a token seat at the table. That same novelization puts a birthday night for her at Ray's, the Metro watering hole, with a banner that called her Babycakes and a money-tree of signed bills over the bar while she asked for club soda instead of whiskey.
Fighting The Gangs
In the 1997 heat wave Leona hit Colombian and Jamaican crime scenes with Harrigan and Danny Archuleta while news vans sold the drug war as the whole story. She held the barricade when Deputy Chief Phil Heinemann ordered Metro to wait for a federal team, then followed Harrigan into the loft after he ignored that hold. Inside, the Scorpios were already cut apart by something that left no bullet wounds, and Leona was the one who first said the bodies looked wrong for a gang hit.
She carried a SIG Sauer P226 with a laser sight on the street and emptied it when the fight turned real. The squad's war was supposed to be Colombian Scorpions against the Jamaican Voodoo Posse. The City Hunter was hunting both sides for sport and watching which cops still ran toward the gunfire. Leona stayed in that line with Harrigan and Danny while Special Agent Peter Keyes built a cover story around the bodies.
Partnered With Jerry Lambert
When Jerry Lambert transferred in from Rampart with a gunslinger reputation, the squadroom gossip put him next to Leona before Harrigan finished the welcome speech. She had heard how his last partners got shot and did not want a cowboy covering her back. In the novelization she listened to one of his war stories, then gripped him hard enough to make the point that cowboy moves with her would cost him more than pride. Harrigan and Danny watched it land and agreed the kid had made his first big mistake.
She still took him as partner once Harrigan made the assignment stick. Jerry brought surveillance skill and a need to prove himself in a precinct nobody requested unless they wanted a reputation. Leona brought the street sense of someone who already knew Metro Command was a war zone. Their working truce held through the Jamaican penthouse, Danny's funeral, and the pathologist's lab, even when she still looked at him like a risk she had not chosen.
Crime Scenes And The Lab
After the Colombian loft and the Jamaican slaughter at Ramon Vega's penthouse, Leona worked the rooms with a flashlight and a revolver while the federal team sealed evidence behind yellow tape. She saw skins, hanging bodies, and wounds that did not match knives or gunfire from either gang. When Danny went back into the rafters alone and did not come out, she stood with Harrigan at the grave and stopped treating the case as another drug massacre.
Leona and Jerry took the spear tip Danny had found to chief pathologist Irene Edwards. The metal sat outside the periodic table, and later wood from the penthouse carried slaughterhouse chemicals that pointed Metro toward the packing district. Harrigan called them from a phone booth and told them to ditch any federal tail, take the Metro Long Beach line, and meet him at Vernon Street. Leona left the lab knowing the killer was still hunting cops, and that Keyes wanted the same trail without sharing why.
Before the subway run she pressed Harrigan to watch his own back. Danny was already dead, the feds were lying about DEA covers, and the thing that had cut their partner was still in the city. She was not asking him to stand down. She was telling him the City Hunter had already marked the squad, and that Metro's habit of going alone would get more of them hung like Danny.
Subway Massacre
Leona and Jerry slipped out the back of the precinct, checked for tails, and went down into the Metro with the rush-hour crowd. Jerry complained that he never found a seat and that they should have taken a car. Ahead of them, cloaked, the City Hunter moved through the same press of bodies, reading heat signatures and fixing on the two Metro warriors as the next way to goad their lieutenant. Commuters felt a shove or a shimmer and clutched their wallets, then forgot it.
On the train they found a wolf pack with a sharpened screwdriver working a man with a briefcase, then watched half the car draw guns when the victim produced a revolver of his own. Leona and Jerry broke in with badges out, ordering weapons down. Before Miranda finished, the City Hunter tore open a corner of the roof and dropped into the carriage under tunnel light and sparks. Armed riders opened fire on a target they could not track, and the plasma cannon answered with pinpoint kills.
Jerry shoved Leona behind him, emptied his revolver at armor and helmet, and screamed for her to get the passengers out while he stayed to dance. She herded the survivors into the next car, slammed the emergency stop, and put them onto the tracks toward the next platform. When she came back for her partner she found Jerry hanging from the straps, blood-soaked, and then ran headlong into a solid shape she could not see. Clawed fingers closed on her throat and lifted her off the tunnel floor.
Spared By The City Hunter
The hunter's mask scanned her heart, lungs, and blood flow, then the soft blue glow of another life taking shape in her abdomen. She was gravid. The ethics of that hunt barred taking a pregnant female, and the City Hunter dropped her to the tunnel floor instead of finishing the trophy. In Hawke's novel it still judged that she would have made a fine prize, then turned back into the car to harvest the riders and Jerry. Leona lived because of a code, not mercy in any human sense, and the shock of that lift left her broken on the ground while the massacre continued a few yards away.
Aftermath
Harrigan reached the station through reporters and found Deputy Chief Heinemann begging for a statement while Keyes and the task force had already vanished. Paramedics brought Leona out on a gurney in deep shock but alive. A Mediscan unit picked up fetal heart tones, and they pushed for L.A. County at once. Harrigan had not known she was pregnant. He watched the van leave, then went into a subway car with a peeled roof and bodies hanging from the ceiling, still hunting the thing that had spared her and taken Jerry.
The film leaves Leona alive as of that night in 1997, carried away from the platform while Harrigan chased the City Hunter toward the slaughterhouse and the Lost Tribe ship. She does not return for the roof fight or the crater. Her survival sits next to Danny's and Jerry's deaths as the clearest proof that the hunter was choosing trophies by a code, not killing every cop who crossed its path. Years later, in the short story Drug War from Predator: If It Bleeds, Harrigan's Rio flashback lists her as Leon Cantrell, misspelled, beside Danny, Jerry, and Pilgrim. It is a callback to the old Metro squad, not a new chapter for her.
Leona In The Predator 2 Comic
Dark Horse published a two-issue Predator 2 adaptation in February and June 1991, written by Franz Henkel from the Thomas brothers' screenplay. Dan Barry drew the first issue. Mark Bright drew the second, including the Metro sequence. In the comic the hunter actively follows Leona and Jerry onto the train to goad Harrigan, a targeted hunt the film leaves more ambiguous. Jerry tells her to clear the passengers and pull the brake, then stays to fight. When she returns, the scan that shows the fetus is drawn as thermal panels with no dialogue, and the creature turns away. Harrigan later sees her on the stretcher with fetal heart tones, still alive, while he goes into the tunnel after Jerry.
Personality And Traits
Leona Cantrell was a working Metro detective first, the kind of cop who ran toward gunfire and still kept her head once she got there. At the Colombian loft and in Ramon Vega's penthouse she read the scene before the feds did, and she was the first to say the bodies looked wrong for a gang hit. She was blunt with superiors and partners alike, loyal to Harrigan without being his echo, and quick to tell him when his habit of going alone was getting the squad killed.
Her toughness had a dry edge. She met Jerry Lambert's gunslinger stories with a warning grip rather than a lecture, yet once the partnership stuck she trusted him enough to follow his order on the train and clear the passengers while he stayed to fight. In Simon Hawke's novelization she is also a newlywed who met her husband by writing him a speeding ticket, laughs through a birthday under a Babycakes banner, and orders club soda without yet knowing why. Under the cop's armor sits a survivor: she went back into the carriage for Jerry when she could have stayed on the tracks, and she lived through the City Hunter's grip in a shock that left her alive but broken on the tunnel floor.
Behind The Scenes
María Conchita Alonso played Leona for director Stephen Hopkins from a screenplay by Jim Thomas and John Thomas. Early drafts used the surname Williams before the character became Cantrell. A longer cut of the Keyes-bar scene originally celebrated her twenty-eighth birthday with Rick on screen; the finished film trims that to Harrigan and Jerry talking while the novelization keeps the party, the banner, and the husband. The pregnancy subplot was always meant to explain why the City Hunter let her live, and the subway scan is the clearest on-screen statement of that hunter code in the 1990 film. Alonso appears with Danny Glover, Rubén Blades, and Bill Paxton in unit publicity as the Metro squad Harrigan, Danny, Jerry, and Leona.

Conclusion
Leona Cantrell was the Alvarado detective who fought the 1997 gang war beside Harrigan and Danny, took Jerry Lambert as partner, and walked into a subway car the City Hunter had already chosen. She cleared the passengers, found Jerry hanging, and lived only because a thermal scan showed she was pregnant. The novelization fills in Rick, the birthday at Ray's, and the hunter's regret that she would have been a fine trophy. The Dark Horse comic draws that scan in silent panels, and If It Bleeds later names her in Harrigan's Rio flashback, misspelled, among the Metro dead and living the first hunt left behind.
