Predator: Fire and Stone: Plot, Characters & Lore Overview
Predator: Fire and Stone is a four-issue Dark Horse miniseries written by Joshua Williamson and drawn by Christopher Mooneyham, with colors by Dan Brown, letters by Nate Piekos, and covers by Lucas Graciano. The series reached shops in October 2014 as part of the Fire and Stone event that also included Aliens and Prometheus titles. On the mercenary hull Perses, security chief Galgo Helder wakes to a cloaked stowaway after the fight over the Geryon armada, then is forced back to LV-223 when the hunter later called Ahab demands a greater quarry. The arc continues Galgo's escape from Alien vs. Predator: Fire and Stone and stands among Dark Horse Predator comics as the hunter's side of that crossover season.
Plot Summary
Issue 1
Stowaway On The Perses
On 23 January 2219, in the Zeta 2 Reticuli system, Galgo Helder hauled Higgins out of cryo aboard the mercenary hull Perses while Piper was already awake and moving. Galgo told them they were going hunting after the fight that had torn through the Geryon armada, and he refused to jump for home until a fuzzy sensor contact on his own ship was cleared. He armed the three of them with scavenged gear from the Engineer wreck on LV-223, including a sparking staff and a curved Engineer cannon he treated as their meal ticket for the company.
Through the hunter's thermal sight the three men glowed as bright targets in the corridors, and Galgo split them so Piper would walk the main corridor while he and Higgins tried to flank the guest. Piper joked about past bounties and a redhead in his dreams, then followed the tracker beep into a stretch of ship where the signal put him almost on top of the contact. The hunt for a stowaway on the Perses had already begun before Galgo finished explaining why they were not yet light-years from the moon.
Piper And The Cloak
Piper struck a shimmering outline in the corridor and called the kill before he had it, while Galgo and Higgins argued over the radio about whether the thing was one of the monsters from LV-223. The cloaked hunter cut Piper, threw a smart disc that shattered the staff in his hands, and left him naming the attacker as something that used stealth rather than animal instinct. Galgo recognized the pattern from a hunter he had already blasted during the armada fight, but he would not stop long enough to give Higgins a clean answer.
Piper refused to run and stood in the smoke calling for a face-to-face fight while red targeting lasers settled on his chest. The plasma bolt that answered him tore through his torso and dropped him on the grating, and the cloaked arm that followed recovered the disc from the wall. By the time Galgo reached the cargo levels, Piper was already dead and the stowaway still owned the ship.
Bait In The Cargo Bay
Galgo locked Higgins behind a cargo hatch as bait and opened the bay doors once his tracker showed the guest in the same compartment. He expected the decompression to take the hunter with the old man, closed the doors again, and walked away calling himself too pretty to die in the middle of nowhere. The tracker beeped again at bay door four, and the masked hunter dropped into view on the beams above him with spear and claws ready.
The fight that followed smashed Galgo's stolen gear, put a net over him, and left the unmasked hunter standing over him after Galgo cracked the bio-mask. Galgo offered to drop the passenger anywhere rather than share the Perses, then watched a device between them spark and open a projection he did not understand at first. The hunter had not boarded to steal a ride home. He had boarded to force a witness toward a larger hunt.
The Last Great Hunt
The hologram that filled the hold showed a massive Engineer wrapped in a red field, the same giant species Galgo had already seen tied to the wreck on LV-223. The hunter stood beside him with a skull trophy on his armor and treated the image as the true target of the voyage, not the mercenary crew. Galgo swore under his breath as the pursuit took on the name it would carry to the end, the last great hunt.
The voyage up to that point left the Perses still in the Zeta 2 Reticuli system with Piper and Higgins gone and Galgo alive only because the hunter still needed a pilot. The stowaway who had killed his men had shown him the quarry that mattered more than Earth leave or company salvage, a giant of the race known in Space Jockey lore. Galgo understood that the hunter could have killed him in the hold and chose a guide instead, and he spent the rest of the trip working out how to stay useful enough to live. The next jump would not be toward home.
Issue 2
Hunt On UE-753
A flashback opened on day four of a hunt around 2107 on UE-753 in the Kaus Borealis system, where four-armed tribal warriors carried axes across cracked ground under twin suns. The cloaked hunter cut one of them open in the canyon and finished the kill among the rocks while the prey's companions still searched the plain. Those early trophies belonged to the same Yautja who later rode the Perses, long before Galgo ever saw him.
The sequence framed the hunter as a veteran of worlds that had nothing to do with Weyland-Yutani salvage runs or the Geryon armada. Four-armed prey, cave walls, and later Engineer visions all belonged to one career that had already stretched more than a century before 2219, and the warriors of UE-753 joined the long roll of other species that Yautja hunt. That flashback explained why a single Engineer mattered more to him than a ship full of humans, because every trophy he had taken since those twin suns had pointed him toward the same giant quarry. Galgo knew none of this history when the hunter boarded, which left him guessing at motives rooted in a century of hunts.
Cave Of The Giants
Deeper in the same hunt the Predator carried a severed head into a cave mouth and faced a blue mural of towering giant figures above rows of smaller stick bodies. He spoke in his own tongue at the wall and reached toward the light as if the painting confirmed a quarry his people already knew how to name. The giants on the stone matched the Engineer shape he would later force Galgo to see in hologram form.
That mural turned the later LV-223 chase into the latest step of an old obsession rather than a random boarding. The hunter had been collecting proof and trophies toward the same species for decades before the Geryon ever reached the moon, and the painted giants matched the pale Space Jockeys whose derelict ship lay on LV-223. He studied the wall the way an elder studies a map, reading the scale of the figures against the small bodies beneath them and judging how dangerous the real thing would be. When he finally held Galgo's ship, he already knew which direction the last great hunt had to face.
Return To LV-223
Back in 2219, Galgo realized the hunter could not fly the Perses alone and tried to bargain with that weakness, then found himself pointed back toward the moon he wanted to leave forever. On 30 January 2219 the ship closed on LV-223, and Galgo called the return a damn stupid mistake while the Predator waited in the bay with spear and shoulder cannon ready. He lowered the ramp into jungle steam and told the hunter he was not going outside with him, and when the unmasked Predator grabbed him and shoved him toward the hatch anyway, Galgo called him one stone-cold mother for pulling such a stunt.
The moon that had already cost him friends and cargo was again under his landing lights, this time because a Yautja had made him the pilot of someone else's hunt. Galgo still talked as if the Engineer gun and company payout mattered more than the blue giant the hunter wanted, and he tested the Predator's patience with every complaint. The hunter answered with his grip and his shoulder cannon rather than words, and Galgo learned quickly that bargaining had stopped working once the ramp touched ground. The surface of LV-223 did not care which of them was in charge.
Swarm On The Moon
In the jungle Galgo warned that the last time he had been on the moon the place had been full of monsters hungry for blood, and he wanted his gun back before a swarm closed in. Adult Xenomorphs and horned local beasts poured out of the trees, and he and the hunter ran together while Galgo cursed and the Predator answered in clicks. They stopped long enough to kill a charging animal with spear and linked pull, then stood over the carcass while Galgo regretted ever coming back.
The run through the jungle ended with three women survivors in the same woods, with one of them telling Galgo that now that he had returned he was going to die there. The hunter had his guide on the surface, the moon still held Engineers somewhere ahead, and Galgo's only ship was the leash that bound them. Galgo greeted the moon as home sweet home with the bitterness of a man who had sworn never to set foot on it again, and the survivors made clear they had not forgotten how he left them. Whatever the Predator wanted from the Engineers, Galgo now had to answer for the Geryon in front of the people he had abandoned.
Issue 3
Reunion Under The Leash
A flashback to 6 November 2216 showed Galgo delaying on a melting hull in the Wolf 424 system while Captain Angela Foster held the Geryon for sixty seconds, a reminder of how long he had been cutting corners around her orders. Back on 30 January 2219, the hunter on LV-223 hit Galgo with a red energy line from his gauntlet and bound the two of them together while Galgo shouted for Angela to run. She refused to leave him to die, turned her own people back toward camp, and faced the leash that now tied Galgo to the Predator.
Galgo told her the leash worked both ways and forbade the hunter from killing her, then admitted he needed her patience while he still owed the Predator a hunt. He summarized the armada disaster as kill or be killed after Francis and Elden's fight, claimed Higgins and Piper were already dead, and refused to simply fly the survivors out on the Perses. Angela had already seen Engineers on the moon, and Galgo named the hunter a Predator with eyes only for that species.
Campfire On LV-223
That night Galgo and the unmasked hunter shared a fire at a cave mouth while Angela's camp waited elsewhere. Galgo asked what had torn the Predator's face compared with the hunters he had seen on the Geryon, then filled the silence with a boast about saving families from pirates on a dying cruise ship. He pointed at a deep scar on the hunter's leg and invited a trade of stories, while the Predator's targeting laser stayed on him the whole time.
The campfire did not make them friends, but it locked Galgo into the role of translator and partner for the Engineer chase. He warmed his hands over the flames and said the fire was just like when he was a kid, then complained that they had nothing to roast, while the hunter watched him across the flare that had lit it. Angela had already told him she was done with his messes, and by morning she kicked him awake and sent him on with the hunter alone. Galgo's answer was that if they were going to draw out an Engineer, they needed bait.
Horned Bait
Galgo and the hunter worked the forests for large horned animals, and Galgo drove a spear through one beast's skull while the Predator stayed linked to him by the red line. The hunter later handed over the scavenged Engineer gun so Galgo could serve as armed backup rather than helpless bait, and Galgo admitted he had never been so glad to hold a weapon. Thermal sight picked up more fauna in the trees as they pushed toward the ground where an Engineer might answer the noise of a hunt.
Using local animals as lure was Galgo's plan for drawing the blue giant without walking blind into its camp, and it borrowed from the way Predators fought giant beasts on other worlds. The Predator accepted the method because it still put him closer to the quarry he had chased across systems, and he let Galgo carry a real weapon for the first time since the cargo bay. Each carcass they left behind spread blood and noise across the forest, and both of them understood that an Engineer drawn by that trail would not arrive alone or unarmed. By the time the plain opened, both of them were committed to a fight neither could fly away from.
Engineer On The Plain
On the open ground the Engineer finally stood in the open in ribbed black gear, towering over Galgo while the Predator crouched with spear and skull trophy ready. Galgo was caught between them on the dusty plain under a pale sun, too small to decide the fight and too involved to leave it. The hunter roared, Galgo swore, and the Engineer's black stare closed the distance the hologram had promised back on the Perses.
That standoff set up one of the defining Predator vs. Engineer fights in the comics, with the hunter finally face to face with the species he had studied for decades. Decades of hunts on other worlds had led the scarred Yautja to this plain, and Galgo's bad luck had put a human with an Engineer gun in the same place. Galgo had no stake in the duel beyond surviving it, yet the leash and the stolen weapon made him part of the fight whether he wanted it or not. The bait had worked.
Issue 4
Engineer Against Ahab
On 31 January 2219 the Engineer seized the hunter by his dreadlocks among the trees of LV-223 and wrenched him off balance while Ahab screamed. The giant hammered the Predator with blows that cracked against his armor, and sparks burst from the hunter's wrist gauntlet as he struggled to break free of a creature far stronger than any prey he had faced. When the leash finally came free, Galgo raised the Engineer weapon and put a blast into the giant's chest, then decided he wanted no part of the finish and ran into the trees. The Engineer fled deeper into the forest with orange fire still on his armor while the hunter followed.
Galgo wandered the woods calling himself a stupid fool for coming back, kicking stones and cursing the empty path. He had opened the fight and then tried to walk away from the same moon that had already stranded Angela's people, telling himself the hunter was on his own. The beating Ahab had taken in the trees showed how badly the Predator had misjudged the strength of his quarry, and Galgo knew a wounded hunter might not win the second round. The Predator and the Engineer did not wait for him to grow a conscience.
Spear And Self Destruct
Inside a metallic structure the hunter engaged his cloak, threw a combistick through the Engineer's chest, and drove the fight onto grated walkways slick with green blood. The Engineer tore the spear free and pressed the wounded Predator hard enough that Galgo heard the beeping of a hunter's self-destruct and ran back into the fight. He finished the giant with another blast, propped up the injured Predator, and recognized the countdown for what it was.
They cleared the blast radius before the charge cooked off, and the explosion that followed wrecked more than the Engineer. Galgo looked back at the fireball and realized his beautiful baby, the Perses, was gone with it, leaving him shipwrecked on the moon he had tried to escape. Angela found him afterward and told him he had damned himself too when that only chance off the rock went up.
Ahab's Whale
From the wreckage the hunter rose with an Engineer skull in his hand, and Galgo's narration named him Ahab at last, the man who had finally got his whale. Angela told Galgo to shut up while he joked that they were too small for the hunter to bother killing next, and the Predator walked away into the haze with his trophy. Decades of hunts across UE-753, other systems, and the Geryon boarding had ended in that one skull.
Galgo admitted he had run again and only returned because he could not leave Angela to the Engineer if the Predator fell. She still blamed him for the lost ship, and he agreed he deserved the stranding after the messes he had made since the salvage run began. The hunter Galgo named after the captain of the whaling story became the hunter later known as Ahab the Engineer hunter, and the skull he carried away was the trophy that defined him. Ahab had his prize. The humans had each other and a moon full of remaining threats.
Survivors On LV-223
By 12 February 2219, Ahab was still on LV-223 long enough to put a plasma bolt into an adult Xenomorph that pressed Angela's remaining crew. Galgo stayed with her people because she needed every gun she could get, and he joked about his charming personality while she talked about killing more of the creatures every day. He asked about Russell's notebook and a signal in the mountain, and she set that aside for simple survival.
Galgo knew he was of no further use to Ahab once the Engineer was dead, and he watched the hunter's new lease on life from the human side of the camp. The Predator still stalked the moon with his trophy and his plasma caster, culling the creatures that threatened the camp, while the survivors scavenged what they could and counted the days. The miniseries left them walking the moon under a low sun with no Perses waiting in orbit, and the story of that stranding continued in Alien vs. Predator: Fire and Stone and the rest of the event. The last great hunt was over for the Predator. The stranding had only started for Galgo.
Key Characters
- Galgo Helder was security chief and pilot of the Perses. He woke Higgins and Piper to clear a stowaway, used Higgins as bait, flew Ahab back to LV-223, lost the ship in the Engineer fight, and remained with Angela's survivors.
- Ahab was the scarred Yautja hunter who boarded the Perses after the Geryon fight, killed Piper, forced Galgo to LV-223, and took an Engineer skull after decades of related hunts.
- Angela Foster was the Geryon captain stranded on LV-223 with other survivors. She refused to abandon Galgo under the leash, broke with him overnight, and later held what remained of her crew together after the Perses was destroyed.
- Piper and Higgins were Galgo's men on the Perses. Piper died to the cloaked hunter in the corridors. Higgins was ejected as bait when Galgo opened the cargo bay.
- The Engineer on LV-223 was the quarry Ahab had chased since at least the UE-753 mural years. Galgo wounded him, Ahab speared him, and Galgo's last blast plus the hunter's self-destruct ended that giant and the Perses together.
Editions
Dark Horse Comics published Predator: Fire and Stone as four issues from October 2014 into January 2015, with issue #1 on sale around 22 October 2014 under editor Brendan Wright and publisher Mike Richardson. Joshua Williamson wrote the miniseries, Christopher Mooneyham drew it, Dan Brown colored it, and Nate Piekos lettered it, with Lucas Graciano on the main covers and Alex Maleev with Dave Stewart on at least one variant. Each floppy carried the Fire and Stone event branding that also covered the related Aliens, Prometheus, and Alien vs. Predator miniseries from the same season. The story opens after Galgo detaches the Perses from the Geryon armada fight and closes with him stranded beside Angela's survivors on LV-223.
Collected editions later gathered the Fire and Stone comics across the event line, and the Predator issues remain the Galgo and Ahab chapter of that crossover rather than a retelling of the AvP book. Credits inside issue #1 list the creative team above and place chapter one on the Perses in January 2219 before the return to the moon. Later issues add the UE-753 flashbacks and the dated LV-223 surface days through mid-February 2219.
Behind The Scenes
Dark Horse scheduled Predator: Fire and Stone as the hunter-focused branch of the 2014 Fire and Stone event, separate from Chris Roberson's Aliens: Fire and Stone and from Christopher Sebela's Alien vs. Predator: Fire and Stone. Williamson and Mooneyham inherited Galgo Helder and the stowaway beat that Sebela's AvP issues had already set up when the Perses cut free of the armada. Brendan Wright edited the Predator floppies, and Lucas Graciano's issue #1 cover put Galgo in the foreground with the hunter rising behind him under the dripping Predator logo.
The series is also where the scarred Engineer-obsessed hunter receives the name Ahab in Galgo's narration, a label later comics and profiles continued to use for that character. Flashbacks dated around 2107 on UE-753 and later systems fill in decades of hunts before the 2219 boarding, which is why the Engineer kill reads as the end of a long career chapter rather than a one-off trophy. Readers who come from the AvP Fire and Stone issues meet the same Galgo and the same moon, then stay with the hunter's leash instead of Elden and Francis.
Conclusion
Predator: Fire and Stone is Joshua Williamson and Christopher Mooneyham's 2014 Dark Horse miniseries about Galgo Helder and the hunter Ahab after the Geryon armada fight. It covers the Perses stowaway, the forced return to LV-223, Angela Foster's survivors, and the Engineer kill that costs Galgo his ship. The comic ends with Ahab holding his whale and Galgo left among the humans who still have to live on that moon.
