The DSMO Marion was the Kelland Mining Company orbital freighter in Alien: Out of the Shadows by Tim Lebbon. Its registration was HGY-64678, and distress traffic expanded the initials to Deep Space Mining Orbital Marion. The ship hung over LV-178 in support of a remote trimonite dig, took catastrophic damage when the dropship Delilah hit its docking level, and later broke up in the planet's atmosphere after a Xenomorph outbreak. Ellen Ripley came aboard from her shuttle during that crisis, about thirty-seven years after the Nostromo.

Ownership And Role

The Marion's crew worked for the Kelland Mining Company. Kelland was owned by Prospectia, a subdivision of San Rei Corporation, which sat under Weyland-Yutani. Company money still paid science officers on ships like the Marion even when the day-to-day operator was Kelland.

The hull was built for massive deep-ore work and large-core harvesting rather than for trimonite extrusion, with huge holds and four extendable towing decks stacked beneath the engine room. On the LV-178 contract the ship still mined trimonite, the hardest material known in the book, and had a little more than three tons of it aboard when the crisis began. Surface shifts ran about fifty days at a time under an environmental dome on the planet.

Layout And Systems

Key spaces included an accommodations hub, a recreation block with Baxter's bar, a bridge several levels up, sick bay, an engine room, Hold 2 for mining gear and ground transports, and a nose bio-pod nicknamed Heaven for food growth. Four docking bays sat in a protruding level under the nose, with Bays One and Two on the port side and Bays Three and Four to starboard.

Sick bay held Weyland-Yutani surgical hardware, including a med pod that had cost Kelland almost a tenth of the Marion itself. That unit could repair major trauma and run a limited memory-alteration protocol. After the Delilah impact the ship lost two lateral dampers and three of seven starboard sub-thrusters, vented decks five and six, and lost a reliable long-range antenna, which forced the survivors onto a repeating high-frequency distress loop.

Samson And Delilah

The Marion's surface ferry craft were the dropships Samson and Delilah, each rated for twenty passengers plus a pilot. When the mine went silent, both ships climbed for orbit, and the radio traffic made clear that neither was clean. Vic Jones reported from Samson that parasites had sealed onto faces and that only he and miner Sticky were still untouched among the six people aboard, while Gemma Keech was already losing the fight inside Delilah's cabin.

Delilah Collision

Delilah ploughed into the Marion's port docking arm and destroyed Bays One and Two. Captain Lucy Jordan and security officer Cornell died at the docking level in the impact. The collision knocked the freighter out of geostationary orbit into a decaying path over LV-178, while Samson's automatic docking put the infected ship into Bay Three as a sealed quarantine pen. Delilah's fuel cell did not rupture, and the snagged wreckage was later cut free, but the dropship itself was finished as a craft.

Decaying Orbit And Outbreak

Inside the sealed Samson, the four infected hosts chestbursted and grew into adult Xenomorphs that sat almost motionless for about seventy-seven days while the remaining Marion crew patched hull breaches and waited for a rescue that never came. Chief engineer Chris "Hoop" Hooper took command after Jordan's death. By the time Ripley arrived, about eleven weeks after the crash, eight people were left and Hoop figured they had less than fifteen days before atmospheric burn.

Narcissus And Ash

The Marion's distress loop was picked up by the Narcissus, still carrying Ripley and Jonesy about thirty-seven years after the Nostromo. Ash, running as code inside the shuttle computer, diverted the Narcissus to LV-178 and burned remaining fuel to reach the Marion in seventy-seven days. The shuttle circled once and docked at the last intact arm, Bay Four.

Ash later moved into the Marion's systems and, briefly, into surface mine controls. He treated Special Order 937 as unfinished business and ultimately forced a manual Narcissus release by sabotaging automatic undocking.

Mine Run And Final Breakup

With Marion's own fuel cells damaged and dangerous, the only spare cells sat in the mine, and the only ship that could reach them was the sealed Samson. The survivors forced the Bay Three quarantine open, fought the adult Xenomorphs, and left one loose inside the Marion while Lachance flew the Samson down through LV-178's storms. After the mine run and Hoop's Level 4 fuel-cell detonation, the freighter was shoved deeper into the atmosphere, and that leftover adult killed Lachance before Sneddon chased it into Hold 2 and blew a charge-thumper crate that took her, the adult, and her emerging Chestburster with it.

In the final hours the Marion skimmed upper air with hull heating and structural failure. Hoop carried Ripley back to the Narcissus, put her in the tube with Jonesy after a limited memory wipe in the med pod, and launched the shuttle by hand from the Marion. He then rode decompression into the Samson with a bottle of bourbon and recorded a last distress call as the last survivor of Deep Space Mining Orbital Marion while the freighter broke up over the planet.

Continuity Notes

The Marion exists to fill the decades when Ripley was supposed to be asleep between Alien and Aliens. The limited memory wipe and Ash's final sabotage leave her able to wake on Gateway Station without a conscious record of the Marion days, which is how the film opening still works. The freighter itself does not return in later stories. What carries forward onto LV-178 is the buried mine, the non-terrestrial ship, and the dog-form dead that Sea of Sorrows reopens under New Galveston.
