Isobel Selwyn was the wife of Alexander Selwyn and the mother of Cleo Selwyn in Titan Comics' Blade Runner 2019 and Blade Runner 2039, set in the world of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. Born Isobel Calhoun, the human fashion model died of cancer in 2018, and Eldon Tyrell gave Selwyn a Nexus-7 in her image. That copy fled Los Angeles with Cleo rather than let the Tyrell Corporation take the child, and died covering their escape. A later Nexus-7 carried her memories, raised Cleo on Arcadia, killed Selwyn, and left Earth again in 2039 after Aahna "Ash" Ashina traded Selwyn's research to keep Niander Wallace away from them.

Biography

Escape From Los Angeles

The human Isobel came from a wealthy San Francisco family, worked as a couture model, and rarely traveled into Los Angeles once she married Selwyn. Among the household staff she preferred the chauffeur Arkady. After cancer killed her in 2018, Tyrell delivered a Nexus-7 replacement that looked and spoke like her, and Cleo was told only that her mother had come home from a short illness. By November 2019 that first copy had learned the price of her own creation. Selwyn had agreed to give Tyrell custody of Cleo forever, because the girl carried a rare FOXO3 mutation the company wanted for replicant longevity.

Rather than let Tyrell take the child, Isobel vanished with Cleo and Arkady after the birthday party of young Lydia Tyrell. Late for a meeting at a door marked 575, she beat off three strangers who tried to seize Cleo, then followed a fixer named Malak into the tunnels under the city. There the Lung prepared them for a run south with an escort called the Bones, and Isobel cut and dyed her hair blonde and dressed Cleo in plain clothes. She told the girl they were going somewhere warm and dry, and that she did not belong in the clouds anymore.

El Santuario

The Bones took mother and daughter across the southern border, and a boatman called the Heart rowed them to El Santuario, an island beach where fugitive replicants lived without weapons. On the sand Isobel played with Cleo as if the danger had ended, and the child still believed she was with her real mother. The sanctuary's leader kept private letters between Eldon Tyrell and Alexander Selwyn that spelled out the bargain for Cleo's FOXO3 gene. Experiments planned for the girl would have killed her. When Ash arrived to take Cleo home, those letters changed the case from a missing-persons job into a rescue.

Isobel had already called a chop-shop surgeon known as the Skin about removing a birthmark, saying she was on her way home, a phrase that pointed Ash toward the underground network that had sheltered them. At El Santuario she waited while Ash read the proof of Selwyn's deal, then stood with the unarmed replicants of the beach as a Tyrell transport came down in the rain. Selwyn himself stepped out with armed soldiers behind him. The sanctuary that had welcomed her was about to be wiped out for a child Tyrell intended to use up.

The Stand At El Santuario

Tyrell soldiers cut down the unarmed replicants who tried to protect Cleo, and Isobel was wounded while shielding the girl. She stayed behind with a borrowed pistol and laid down covering fire so Ash could get Cleo into a spinner and off the beach. The first Nexus-7 did not survive that fight. Her last act as a mother was to buy the child a few minutes of flight while Selwyn's men overran the sand.

Ash flew Cleo back toward Los Angeles with hours left before her own spine implant shut down, and she refused to hand the girl to the police or to Tyrell. The death of the first Isobel left Cleo without the only mother she remembered, and it left Selwyn free to order another copy. That later model would carry the same face and the same store of memories, including the choice to put Cleo ahead of the man who had paid for her.

The Second Replicant

Between 2019 and 2026 Selwyn had another Nexus-7 built to look like Isobel and loaded with her predecessor's memories, intending the new copy to follow Ash to Cleo. The second Isobel took work with the Heidecker-Vostro mining company and hired the blade runner Hythe to hunt the missing pair through the colonies. On Ramanuja she met Ash again and claimed to be the same woman who had died at El Santuario. When Ash spotted teenage Cleo boarding a transport for Arcadia, Hythe drew a gun and revealed the deception.

Cleo's friend Padraic tackled Hythe and was shot dead for it, and Cleo ran into Isobel's arms calling her mama. Isobel then shot Hythe before the hunter could fire on Ash, and she told Ash that she carried the earlier Isobel's memories even though Selwyn had built her to be loyal to him. Those memories made her an ally. Ash held Cleo on the landing pad, told her to go to Arcadia with Isobel, and sent them on. Mother and daughter delayed that trip long enough to follow Ash back to Earth and face Selwyn themselves.

Confronting Alexander Selwyn

At the Santa Barbara estate Selwyn shut down the spinal brace his people had designed, leaving Ash helpless on the sand, and Cleo stepped from a spinner with Isobel to ask whether he had promised her to Tyrell for experiments. He admitted it, saying Tyrell had promised to save the world and give him back his wife, and he asked them to be a family again. Cleo hugged him and then went to the injured Ash. Isobel embraced Selwyn, told him he had loved her too much, and snapped his neck.

One of the remaining Hythe copies killed another and bargained for the house and to be forgotten, handing over the brace control so Ash could walk again. The second Isobel had done what the first died trying to finish on the Baja sand. She had taken Cleo out of Selwyn's reach for good and ended the man who treated both wife and daughter as replaceable parts of a deal with Tyrell. The Santa Barbara estate that had held an artificial lion for a four-year-old became the place where that bargain finally broke.

Raising Cleo On Arcadia

Isobel, Cleo, and Ash shared a last meal of noodles at a street counter in the rain, and mother and daughter confirmed they would go to Arcadia and offered to take Ash with them. Ash declined, saying she belonged on Earth among fugitive Nexus-8s. Isobel then raised Cleo on Arcadia through the rest of the girl's childhood, and she stayed in the same home after Cleo married, had a son, and found work as a schoolteacher. For nearly two decades the second replicant lived as the mother Cleo had always known.

That quiet life ended when Wallace tracked Isobel to Arcadia in 2039. She disappeared without telling Cleo where she was going, believing that leading Wallace's people away was the only way to keep the family safe. She chose Earth as the last place anyone would search for a colony refugee, and she went to a residence owned by the original Isobel's relatives in San Francisco. Adult Cleo followed her back, booked a hotel under the Calhoun alias, and pulled Ash into the search that Wallace had already started.

Return In 2039

Blade runners Luv and Rash tracked Isobel to the San Francisco house, and when she heard their spinner she hid. Ash and the farmer Mack arrived soon after, Mack was shot, and Isobel hijacked the spinner, fired on the blade runners, and crashed into the house to pull Ash out. Mack died covering the escape. Isobel then took Ash to Mack's farm, where Cleo was recovering, and explained why she had vanished from Arcadia.

She told Ash that Wallace would never stop hunting her, and she rejected the idea that another colony would keep them safe for long. Under questioning by Ash, Freysa Sadeghpour, Isobel and Cleo, Rash revealed that Wallace believed he was close to replicant fertility and that Isobel was the missing piece. When Rash later broke free and seized Isobel, she demanded to join them instead of serving Wallace, then released Isobel and attacked Luv when the other blade runner ordered her taken away.

Final Fate

Ash traded Selwyn's research to Wallace in exchange for his promise to leave Isobel and Cleo alone, then found them in a crowded Los Angeles street and told Cleo it was done and that they had to get out of the city. Isobel warned that Wallace might still send men after them. Rash promised to protect the pair, wanting off the planet herself. Cleo hugged Ash goodbye in the rain, and Isobel left Earth for the colonies with Cleo and Rash, alive so long as Wallace kept his word.

The second Nexus-7 had outlived the husband who ordered her, the blade runner sent to retrieve her, and the corporate hunt that followed her from Arcadia to San Francisco. She remained the mother Cleo chose to follow twice, once off-world as a child and again as an adult after Wallace forced her into the open. Her fate after that departure depends on a bargain Ash made and Wallace can break.

Personality And Traits

Across three bodies Isobel put Cleo ahead of every other loyalty she was given. The human preferred quiet home life and a trusted chauffeur over Los Angeles society. The first Nexus-7 cut her hair, took a pistol from the Lung, and died on a beach so a blade runner she barely knew could fly the child away. The second copy smiled for Selwyn's plan until the moment Cleo was in danger, then shot Hythe, broke Selwyn's neck, and later abandoned Arcadia rather than let Wallace reach the family through her.

She spoke softly to Cleo even while changing their clothes for a run underground, and she still called the girl baby when they reunited on Ramanuja years later. With Ash she was blunt about risk, saying she would never be safe and that Wallace would not rest until he had her. The same face that Selwyn treated as a replaceable product kept choosing the daughter over the man who paid for each new model.

Relationships

Cleo Selwyn

Cleo knew two Isobels and loved both as her mother, never treating the copies as less than the woman who had tucked her in. The first Nexus-7 raised her after the real Isobel's death, fled Los Angeles with her, and stayed behind at El Santuario so Ash could get her away. The later copy found her on Ramanuja, killed Hythe, snapped Selwyn's neck, and raised her on Arcadia through childhood and into marriage. When that Isobel vanished in 2039, Cleo left her husband and son to follow her back to Earth, then left with her again once Ash had bought them time.

Ash Ashina

Ash first hunted Isobel as a missing wife on a paid case, then learned the Nexus-7 had fled to keep Cleo from Tyrell. The first Isobel died covering Ash's escape from El Santuario, a debt Ash repaid by taking Cleo off-world. The second Isobel shot Hythe beside her on Ramanuja, later crashed a stolen spinner to pull Ash out of San Francisco, and trusted Ash's bargain with Wallace enough to leave Earth on the strength of it. Ash met both copies as adversaries turned allies, and she said goodbye to the surviving one in the same rainy city where the case had started.

Alexander Selwyn

Alexander Selwyn was Isobel's husband, a Canaan Corporation billionaire who accepted a Nexus-7 replacement for his dead wife and traded his daughter's future for the right to keep ordering new copies. He hired Ash to find the first Isobel, led Tyrell soldiers onto El Santuario, and later sent Hythe after the second copy. When Cleo asked him to his face whether he had promised her to Tyrell, he admitted it and asked to be a family again. Isobel answered that plea by breaking his neck on the Santa Barbara sand.

Behind The Scenes

Isobel was created for Titan Comics by writers Michael Green, a co-writer of the Blade Runner 2049 screenplay, and Mike Johnson, with artist Andrés Guinaldo. Marco Lesko handled colors, and she first appeared in Blade Runner 2019 #1 in July 2019 as the missing mother at the center of Ash's case. The comics present three Isobels in story order: the human who dies of cancer before the series opens, the Nexus-7 who flees with Cleo and dies at El Santuario, and the later Nexus-7 who carries those memories into 2026 and 2039. This page covers all three under one entry as successive lives of the same mother.

Johnson later co-wrote Blade Runner 2039 with Mellow Brown, bringing the surviving Isobel back as the quarry Wallace and Luv hunt across Arcadia and San Francisco. Guinaldo's design kept the short blonde hair of the disguised first copy, then aged the second into the white-haired woman who reunites with adult Cleo. Cover artists including Stanley "Artgerm" Lau showed her as a neon-lit Nexus-7 with a blaster on variant covers. Published with Alcon Publishing, the two twelve-issue series carried her from a fashion model's death through two replicant lives and a final departure for the colonies.
