Film Overview

Released in 2022, Avatar: The Way Of Water took place more than a decade after the first film. Jake Sully had fully integrated into Na'vi life and started a family with Neytiri. Their children included Neteyam, Lo'ak, Tuktirey, and Kiri, along with the human boy Spider who had grown up among the Na'vi. When the RDA returned to Pandora with a much larger colonization effort, Jake became a primary target due to his role in the earlier conflict. This forced the Sully family to leave the Omaticaya and search for safety elsewhere.

Plot Summary

The story began with the return of the RDA to Pandora. Massive landing craft scorched large areas of forest as humans established permanent settlements. Among the returning forces was a recombined version of Colonel Miles Quaritch, created using Na'vi avatar technology combined with human memories. Quaritch's mission focused on tracking down Jake Sully and eliminating him.

After several confrontations placed the Omaticaya at risk, Jake decided to leave the forest. He believed his presence endangered the clan, so he relocated his family to the eastern seas of Pandora. There, they encountered the Metkayina, a reef-dwelling Na'vi clan adapted to ocean life. Tonowari and Ronal, the leaders of the Metkayina, agreed to give the Sullys temporary refuge.

The Sully children struggled to adapt to the new environment. The Metkayina had different physical traits suited for swimming, including broader tails and stronger lung capacity. The Sully family had to learn new skills, including riding ilu, diving, and navigating coral reef territory. Lo'ak formed a connection with an outcast tulkun named Payakan, while Kiri displayed unusual abilities linked to Eywa.

Meanwhile, Quaritch tracked the Sullys by interrogating villages along the coast. He formed alliances with human whalers hunting tulkun for valuable brain enzymes. These operations introduced new conflicts between the Na'vi and human exploitation of Pandora's oceans. The destruction of a tulkun herd intensified the stakes and pushed the Metkayina toward confrontation.

The climax centered on a large-scale battle near the whaling vessel SeaDragon. The Sullys, the Metkayina, and Payakan attacked the ship to rescue captured family members. The battle unfolded across the ocean surface and inside the sinking vessel. Neteyam was killed during the rescue, marking one of the most emotional moments in the film.

In the final confrontation, Jake fought Quaritch as the ship sank. Neytiri threatened Spider to force Quaritch to release Kiri. Quaritch retreated after being defeated, but Spider ultimately saved him from drowning. The Sully family mourned Neteyam and chose to remain with the Metkayina. The ending emphasized that the Sullys had found a new home among the reef people.

Pandora's Oceans And New Na'vi Clans

The Way Of Water expanded Pandora by introducing ocean environments and new Na'vi clans adapted to marine ecosystems. The Metkayina lived in reef structures, relied on aquatic mounts, and followed traditions centered on the sea. Their lifestyle differed significantly from the forest-dwelling Omaticaya. These differences helped establish greater diversity among Na'vi clans and reinforced the idea that Pandora supported many unique Na'vi societies.

The Tulkun

One of the most significant additions to Avatar lore in The Way Of Water was the introduction of the tulkun, large, highly intelligent marine mammals that lived in the oceans of Pandora. The tulkun possessed advanced cognitive abilities, complex communication methods, and social structures comparable to or exceeding those of the Na'vi. They migrated seasonally across Pandora's oceans and returned to the reef territories where the Metkayina clan resided. The Metkayina treated the tulkun as spiritual equals rather than animals, and the relationship between the two species was based on mutual respect and cooperation.

Avatar Timeline Placement

Avatar: The Way Of Water took place more than a decade after the events of Avatar (2009), with most sources placing the story around 2168. By this point, Jake Sully had fully integrated into Na'vi society and formed a family with Neytiri, raising their children Neteyam, Lo'ak, Tuktirey, and adopted daughter Kiri. The RDA returned to Pandora in force after their defeat in 2154, establishing new industrial bases and beginning large-scale colonization efforts rather than limited mining operations. The third film, Avatar: Fire and Ash took place immediately after The Way Of Water.

Production

Avatar: The Way Of Water was directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau through Lightstorm Entertainment, in collaboration with 20th Century Studios. Development began shortly after the release of Avatar, but the sequel was delayed for several years while new performance capture and rendering technologies were developed. Principal performance capture filming took place between 2017 and 2020, with much of the work conducted on specially designed stages that allowed actors to perform in large water tanks. The production introduced underwater performance capture, requiring actors to hold their breath for extended periods while wearing motion-capture suits. Live-action reference photography and additional filming were conducted in New Zealand, with Weta FX handling a large portion of the digital environment and character work. The long production schedule allowed multiple Avatar sequels to be filmed concurrently, with portions of Avatar 3 completed during the same performance capture period.

Release And Reception

Avatar: The Way Of Water premiered in London on December 6, 2022, and was released worldwide on December 16, 2022, in standard, 3D, IMAX, and high frame rate formats. The film performed strongly at the global box office, eventually earning over $2.3 billion worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing films of all time. It saw particularly strong performance in international markets and premium large-format screenings.

The film received generally positive reviews, with critics praising the visual effects, underwater sequences, and worldbuilding, while some commentary focused on its runtime and familiar story structure. At the 95th Academy Awards, Avatar: The Way Of Water received multiple nominations including Best Picture, Best Visual Effects, Best Production Design, and Best Sound. The film won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, continuing the franchise's recognition for technical achievements.

Legacy

Avatar: The Way Of Water expanded the setting of Pandora beyond the forest regions introduced in the first film. The film introduced the Metkayina reef clan, new marine ecosystems, and the tulkun species, adding additional cultural and environmental depth to the Avatar universe. The story shifted the focus toward the Sully children, establishing the next generation of central characters for future sequels. The return of the RDA as a colonization force, including the creation of Recombinant soldiers and new coastal bases, broadened the conflict beyond resource extraction. The film directly established plot threads for Avatar 3 and later sequels, including the ongoing pursuit of Jake Sully and the growing role of Kiri.
